Illustrator :: Linear Conversion From ArcGIS To AI
Jan 6, 2014
I compile all of my data in Arc and get my data referenced and looking good. Once all of the data I need is in place and ready to be exported, I export the map out to an AI file. This has worked fine and still does. I am new to AI and have great Arc Knowledge. Here's where my issue begins:
- Once I bring in the map to AI, the roads look horrible and nothing like they did in Arc. I exported it at the small scale (county) and the linework looks horrible. Roads that were straight in Arc are all zig-zagged and did not convert over smoothly. This would not be an issue if there were only a couple of them, However, I am dealing with thousands of unsmoothed roads. The smooth tool works, however, one line at a time and then it leaves loose connections. So this tool is not really an option for me.
- My next attempt at smoothing out the lines in the masses, was to select the area in question, then Object>Simplify>Smooth. This works on some, but did not produce the output I was looking for. It smoothed out all of the selected roads, but instead of keeping them all together and just smoothing out, It moved some of the longer roads and long story short, the roads became inaccurate and did not shown what was really on the earths surface.
- is the scale of exporting out of Arc. At the small Scale, the map is rough, nasty and needs some smoothing. However, when exporting on the larger scale, the roads turn out fine, just as they are displayed in Arc. I have been messing around with this idea since it produces the output I am looking for, however, scales and whatnot are all out of wack creating more than wanting distortion as well as gridding out my map to export, then reassembling it. I could do that, but this map will need to be accurate and an error in this that could mess up the coordinate system.
There are multiple ways to smooth out data in Arc, however, the data looks fine in arc, it only has conversion errors when brought into AI.
Experienced this error with linears and scales? I am going to locate a new road shapefile and see if it will come out better in AI, but if there is a workaround.I have tried other files that I have, and some are better than others, however, all have large areas that will need to be smoothed.

What's the difference between linear and bi-linear when using gradients? they seem to do the same thing to me (or I don't notice a difference)

Suppose I have an object filled with a linear gradient. This object is the only selected. I just would like to change the angle of the gradient to 25 degrees. So I think I could do:
var doc = app.activeDocument
alert(doc.selection[0].fillColor.angle) // the result is the exact angle of the gradient fill of the selected object. Suppose 12 degrees.
//now the try to change:
doc.selection[0].fillColor.angle = 25.0
No errors are found by the Extended Script Toolkit..BUT...it does not change anything. As Illustrator reference manual does not say this property is read only, I think I could write.

I have to repeat a circle an even number of times across a 597" linear space. The circles need to be approx 24" apart, but evenly spaced. How can I do this without having to manually calculate the spacing and the # of circles required?

Almost every time I add a linear gradient to an object I want to change the angle from 0 to 90 degrees.
Is there a script that I could use for this, so that I could assign a keyboard shortcut and press that instead of clicking the box & typing 90 all the time? (i.e. select an object, run a script & it would apply the standard black to white linear gradient at 90 degrees instead of 0.)

Any reliable process to use data from Civil 3D objects in ArcGIS 9.3? AutoDesk is not my real strength (ESRI ArcGIS is), so I'm trying to learn what the best possible workflow is from AutoDesk Civil 3D users. We've used one solution using Safe Software's FME, but am looking for something that's a little more 'direct' from AutoDesk or ESRI (i.e.: no third-party software/data formats, if possible; read data directly from the source instead of interim processing steps with interim files to create/manage/track, if possible)

I want to create a site layout that would consist of multiple buildings. I have the AutoCAD drawing of each building and the location and orentation of each building in ArcGIS. Is there a way to import the data from ArcGIS into AutoCAD for my use?
Also if this isnt the correct location for this could administrator move it for me?

I was furnished with a .shp file (and a number of associated files (5 total I think) that I can't remember-not in office now). The file is supposed to be a pipeline alignment in Pennsylvania South NAD83, the data imports the polyline with correct dimensions but the coordinates end up being about N-14,613,757 E-1,984,420 and should be about N-334,435 E-1,413,375.
As an aside, we are using Carlson Civil Suite in MAP. My intuition is telling me the problem has to do with setting up the initial geographic system in a new drawing. I am going to try the import with plain MAP.

We use Acad map 3d 2012 & civil 3d 2012. We also use Arcgis10.2 and have not seen this problem until one of our contractors (using map 3d 2013) sent us his drawings. When we bring in the map 2013 drawing Arcgis does not recognize the projection assigned to the drawing and our data ends up thousands of kilometres off in the distance. Am I missing something...it always works fine for 2012 drawings.

i want to export DGW-data (or in general AutoCAD-data) from AutoCAD Map 3d 2011 and import them into ArcGIS 10.As I suppose, ArcGIS could recognize only DWG or shp.
The most important information for me are the styles (color, linetype ....). The feature class Line is not the main problem, but when i want to export points or polygons it is difficult. AutoCAD seperate points or polygons in fill colors und edge colors and only the edge color are able to import in ArcGIS. Another fact is that ArcGIS seperate a Point into featureclass Line (the edge) und Polygon and the spatial information failes (that works with ArcToolbox feature "CAD to Geodatabase", all not my problem )
To summarize there are any problems with the transformation of styes.
Wenn I export SDF-layer as Shapefile its a good way to transform spatial information (coordinate system) und the data of attributtables, but my problem are the colors und styles.
how i can transport all (point, line, polygon) styles from AutoCAD Map 3D 2011 to ArcGIS 2011?

Is there anyway to convert 0/0/0/100 Black to PMS Black by replacing the cmyk swatch with the PMS swatch? I have a bunch of Illy packaging files that are using CMYK black that need to be changed to Pantone Black C and the only way it seems that I can do it is by selecting same fill and/or stroke. I tried using recolor artwork, but cant get that to work with cmyk black either.

We have had a few instances where we get a file (PDF) from a client and then take it into Adobe Illustrator to add bleed and make a few marking on it for the cutter and then when we re pdf the document, a logo or element drops off the file and then my staff do not pick it up and end up printing the file and it is costing me huge money in waste. We can Rasterize the image in Photoshop before we make changes but then it is not practical to make the changes we need as nothing is vector anymore. Can we automate the solution (If there is one) with Switch?

The standard unit conversion calculator (from Google) says that the 668 pixel = 17.7 cm. But this values are varying in the Adobe Illustration, i.e., 668 pixel = 23.56 cm.

Any workaround for text along path conversion from freehand to illustrator?The problem is text along path in freehand which is slightly moved along path.The result after conversion to illustrator is an invissible (exept a red+ where the text should be)text. Sometimes you can't even correct the problemtext so you had to place hundreds/thousends of text (streetmaps) again after conversion.
Exporting the Freehand file as illustrator 7 gives a much better result for the text part. (the art works is in this case seperated into lines and fills)The message I get opening the illustrator file in CS3 is that legacy text should be updated, clicking the update button and text is looking way better and there is less text to replace.Opening the Feehand file in CS3 doesn't give me this method.

After Copy/Paste form PS cmyk object/picture into AI i noticed that it looses original colors making color conversion CMYK->RGB->CMYK (with AI defined cmyk profile).WHY?
Didn't find any preference in AI (or PS) about that.

I am after a script or some direction for a script to convert a large number of text objects. I'd like to be able to convert from metres to yards and vice versa. All the text objects would be on the same layer and only contain integers and symbols such as (25) -23.
If the conversion could select all the text on one layer, and then convert and copy to a new layer it would be useful but this can be done manually if needed. Is this possible? I am not familiar with scripting really but can learn what i need to get this script going.

When a mixed RGB/CMYK PDF is opened in Illustrator CS6, Illustrator forces a conversion to one color space or the other. See this screenshot: [URL]
I assume this is a limitation of Illustrator and there's no way to keep both color spaces. Under that assumption, Is it possible to choose the profiles used for the conversion from RGB to CMYK? Can Illustrator be made to use the RGB and CMYK profiles defined in its Color Settings to make this conversion?

In the ACR forum, there was a recent discussion about linear segments for the shadows. These are official for sRGB and ProPhotoRGB but are not part of the aRGB specification, but a slope of less than 32 is allowed in the shadows for raw converters and is used by ACR for all three of these spaces.
Does Photoshop currently implement a linear segment for these color spaces and does it make that much difference in practical photography?

I have tried to create a linear fill and it looks fine in Xara Designer, but after exporting the image as a jpeg, the gradation does not look smooth at all, it looks rather terrible. It does not look as smooth and as seemless as work I have seen which was created using software such as Photoshop. Am I doing something wrong?

I have the kind of bull/goat face in this edited out as a separate layer for adjusting, what I would like to do with it at the moment is apply a left to right brightness gradient on it to make it gradually change from light to dark so that it blends in with the background a bit better.

I have a problem regarding linear dimensions on 3D blocks.
I create a set of 3D blocks and add linear dimensions to these in paperspace. When I want to edit a block the line origin of the linear dimension loses its original set point and I have to spend a lot of time changing the annotations in paperspace.
Am I using the wrong type of annotative dimensions or have I chosen the wrong angle to add dimensions to my blocks altogether?

Creating User Parameters, can we use trigonometric functions? and can we add these to linear (mm) parameters?
Can we add the Values irrespective of Units i.e. Inch/ Deg/ Unitless
Example: d0 (In) = d1 (In) +d3[ul] + (sin(Variable_Angle))
In value = In Value + ul Value + deg Value
