Illustrator :: How To Retrace Part Of Object
Jan 16, 2013
How you retrace part an object, and in this case, part of a letter. Look at my attempt below, to show what I'm trying to do...
What is the best way to go about it? Pen Tool (Tediuos...), Copy letter and cut off at certain point?

still getting used to manipulating (esp distorting) objects. I haven't been able to figure out how to distort just a portion of an obect.
I have an object (a compound shape) with many anchor points, an object made from a scanned ink drawing. It's a helmet with two intricate pieces that come down on either side. I need to make these hanging parts shorter while the rest of the object remains unchanged, so I want to basically select these parts of the object via the direct selection tool and resize them vertically, but all of the distortion tools I can find effect the entire object.
I tried to separate these parts of the object, distort, then re-attach them to the main object, but then I loose the compound shape and all the "holes" on the inside of the object become filled and don't come back even when I re-compond the shape. Also, this seems like an impractical work around to a simple problem.

I have a figure as below:
You can see that the red circles intersect the blue one twice each. One of these intersects (the lower one) should be below the blue circle while the other should be above the blue circle. How can I make this happen? Can I use the shape builder tool somehow?

I am trying to color a part of an object in specific form. (see the picture below) So, I have a restangular and a circle in different color. What I am trying to achieve is only the part of the circle that is over the restangular to be visible (example with photoshop- restangular on layer 1, circle on another layer above it, alt+click to create a clipping mask and it will produce the effect im looking for). However, when creating clipping mask here (from object-clipping mask-make) it seems that either the circle or the restangular will disappear. Are there other ways to achieve this, or I'm looking into the wrong one?

I would like to layer them in such a way that the orage circle below is put in front of the green circle. Essentially, I need to select only the part of the orange circle and bring it to the front while leaving the other part of the circle alone. Can this be done in Illustrator?
In summary, this is what I am trying to accomplish: Green over blueBlue over yellowYellow over orangeOrange over Green
Also, is there a way to use a tool inside of illustrator to arrange the locations so they are all 100% perfectly alligned and meeting in the middle without "eyeballing" it?

I have some black and white line drawings that I made in Elements 9 just using the pencil tool. (Plain white background with black lines.)
Since I made them all using the pencil tool, it made all the lines sort of "blocky" and jagged at the line thickness I chose. And now I just recently figured out that I could have been using the paint brush the whole time and the lines would have been nice and smooth (as opposed to the jagged ones from the pencil).
Because I don't want to completely re-draw the diagrams from the beginning, anyway to make those pencil lines just change to smooth paint brush lines? Or am I going to just have to start over and/or trace the old lines in a new layer?
Elements isn't really for drawing things, but it's all I have to work with right now.

I have simple a 3D bottle shape created from about 16 points and I am trying to map a gif image on to it usning CS5. No matter what I have done (work from a new document, etc.) I always get the error message. I also receive this error when I attempt to map a jpg image on to the same shape. I have attempted this on three different Windows 7 machines running CS5 with the same result. When I try it with CS6 the program closes with a catastrophic error and no message. I do not receive this error using the default symbols. The gif and jpg images are imported and imbedded into the document and then moved to the symbols library.

I am having some trouble with a file in Illustrator CS6. Within a layer, when I add a fill to an object, the fill doesn't block out the object paths beneath. For instance, say I have a square object overlapping a circle object in Layer 1. The square object is above the circle in the layer. When I add a fill to the square, the circle stroke still shows through the square even though the overlapped part should be blocked out by the fill. The square is set to normal visibility, and I have made sure that there are no duplicate paths that would account for what I am seeing. (I.e., it's not a case where there's a second identical circle path that is on top of the square, so that it remains visible in spite of the fill.)
Other details:
- I'm mainly working with a white fill, but the problem is the same with fills of any color
- When there's a fill color in the circle path as well, the circle's fill color *is* blocked out—just not its stroke.
- I have restarted Illustrator and restarted my computer and these have not changed anything.
- There are other layers within the same document where the normal layering rules work.
- I tried copy/pasting some of the problem objects into a new document, and in the new document, the fill works properly.
- If I move the problem objects to another layer, then the fill works as it should. But as I'm dealing with a number of paths, it doesn't make sense to create a layer for each to solve the problem.
I can't tell if it's a matter of working in too large or complex a file.

replaced the head on the attached photo and would like to use this for an employee presentation. How I can make it look a little more real? The employees are going to know that it was photoshopped, but still would like to make it better if possible. I still feel the head is a little too bright.

So I have a multi-part solid of a symmetrical object, meaning that some of the pieces on each side are going to be identical (just mirrored). Some objects I would like to keep separate during the "make components" function because of the bends on them.
But for some of the solids, the ones that are identical on each side of the model, I do not want to create a part file for each identical solid. I want inventor to make one .ipt and put it in the assembly file twice (one on each side.)
The work-around is to only make one of the solids into a part then open the assembly, re-insert the part, then re-constrain it.

In the recent past I've been putting textboxes (General Notes) on drawings, and using part-parameters in these textboxes to display the values stored in these parameters (see attached picture). Is there a way to automatically put a link to these parameters into the notes through the API / VBA so that these values update when the part changes? With the property obj_GeneralNote.Text it's only possible to add plain text.

I have been using GIMp to do some basic things but have recent got a but stuck on how to best replicate part of a subject/object in an image. for example
I have an image of a corner of a building with the wall on the left and right, and sky at the top of the image. I would like to extend one of the walls out to extend the width of the image and also replicate the sky.
The walls are on a slight angle so I can not simply do a retangle block and copy/paste, also when I do this on the sky, the gradients of the paste dont match up nicely.

I have the words Kuhns Creations here, it is going to be the logo for my website. In the end the letters will all be the light blue color that "Kuhns" is right now, I'm just using the different colors to explain my problem. I want the pink part of the "C" to be in front of the "K", but I want the black part of the "C" to be behind the "K", giving the illusion that the "C" is passing through the "K" (this will only be visible cause of the drop shadows on both letters, since they wil both be the same color) Is there a way to do this?
I got this effect in Photoshop, but I need to do it with vectors because the size of the image that has to be uploaded to my website is so small that you lose all detail if its a bitmap (52 pixels x 103 pixels) In addition to the effect explained above I am trying to get a bevel effect. In Photoshop it works and is easy to do but in illustrator the settings are all different and anything I enter looks totally different.
The settings that I'm using in Photoshop are: Style: inner bevel, technique: smooth, depth: 1%, direction: up, size 10 px, soften 0 px, angle:,120 degrees, altitude: 30 degrees, highlight mode: screen, Opacity: 75%, shadow mode: multiply, Opacity:75%. How do I get this same effect in illustrator?

Is there a way to assign just specific vertices to a bone by selecting a separate part of an object? Like for example, I have a model of a gun which I'm trying to rig now and this gun has two barrels, one obove the other, and each of this barrel needs to be assign to a different bone. Those bones are there, but the problem is that certain parts (vertices) of second barrel are assigned as well to the second bone, which is incorrect. How do I select only part (an element) of an object and assign it to the bone?

This code works with no errors but does not change the text size. A user can over ride the text size (Font size) so I'm hoping it is possible thru code.
Dim oSketch As Inventor.Sketch
Set oSketch = oPartDoc.ComponentDefinition.Sketches("Sketch1")
Dim oText As Inventor.TextBox
Set oText = oSketch.TextBoxes.AddByRectangle(pnt1, pnt2)
oText.Style.FontSize = 0.1

I've attempted using the make pattern function in order to create a fill pattern that way, but it's just not working out for me.

If I drag an effect from the target circle of one object to anther in the layer's panel it replaces the effect along with all appearance. But I want just to add the effect. For example, a layer has a drop shadow and a path, round corners. I want to move the drop shadow from the layer to the path so that the path now has the round corners and the drop shadow. To do this I have to open the shadow effect of the layer wright down its parameters, then create a shadow effect for the path with the same parameters which is a lot of work.

I have a logo someone else created. When I bring it in to Illustrator (CC) parts of it are red. And inside the red there are white parts. I want the white parts gone... so that the background will show through (i.e., not the red). I have done this in the past by using "Minus Front" in the pathfinder. But it's not working. This is something I converted from a PNG.
