Illustrator :: How Can A Pattern Be Fixated In Shape
Apr 8, 2013
How can a pattern be fixated in a shape? I have a large pattern which I want to use in a shape. Pattern only partial visible, that's ok. When I move the shape around the way the filling looks changes because the pattern doesn't move.

when I create a pattern using the new pattern maker and I apply it to say a rectangle, how can I make sure that the pattern is centred? For example I have a chevron pattern that I want to fill a rectangle, but I want to make sure that the chevron pattern is dead centre.

I have this object that has a pattern around it with spikes:
I want to take this pattern from this shape and wrap it around this ellipse:
Obviously I know that the pattern will be too short and won't fit around the full ellipipse, but wondering if there is an easy to way to accomplish this (ie a built in function)?

I played with the feature a bit and understand how to create the patterns. Problem is when I go to fill in my 12x12 space there are seams. I have chosen different sizes in the pattern window but all show up with seams when I fill the larger space. Am I doing something wrong or is the largest size you can create with this tool seamlessly only 9x9?

I love the new Pattern Maker in CS6, but I keep running into a problem:
When I create a pattern that is NOT tiled in Grid (i.e. Brick), it usually works without any problem. But once I save and re-open the file, opening the pattern in PM again will show this message:
A clipping mask was created around the pattern tile bounds to preserve legacy pattern appearance. For best results, release the clipping mask when changing the tile size or editing art that overlaps the tile edge. I would then find that, instead of a single motif layed out in a Brick tile, I would have one complete motif in the center and four quartered motifs on the corners of one clipping box. This is tiled in a Grid pattern to emulate a Brick appearance.
So long story short, what's supposed to be a Brick tile turns into a Grid tile that's faking a Brick tile.
Is there a way to keep the simple Brick tiles?

this is not a hard one, but it is hard for me to figure out. i would like to find out how to fill a shape with some patterns exactly like how it looks in the below picture. As you can see, the filled pattern pictures(those small hearts) are not overlayed and the sizes are random. And the edge of the shape(that's the big heart) is just smooth. how to do it?

I'm coming from Fireworks.
A technique I use often in my ui work is to combine a texture with a gradient that fades the gradients color and the pattern to transparent.
In Fireworks, this can be done on a single layer with no mask. The transparency of the gradient affects the pattern.
This is not the case in Photoshop. I am wondering how I can accomplish the same thing in Photoshop, while keeping everything vector.

I'm using CS3 on a Mac.
I outlined my text and subtracted it (and the tree image) from the black background. When I did this both appear thinner - particularly the tree.
If I then take the original version and the new subtracted version, and view them both overlayed one on top of the other in wire frame (outline) mode, there is no difference in the actual lines.
It seems to be a problem with the way illustrator previews the images. This wouldn't concern me, but when I export the file as a jpeg, the lines also appear thinner in the export.
I can create a manual solution by offsetting the path before subtracting, but this isn't ideal.

What does it mean when Illustrator v.15.1.0 ceases to contract a shape using offset paths and will only expand a shape? Seems like only yesterday I could render both ways. Wait a minute, it was only yesterday! Why would it suddenly stop funtioning?

Is there a way to unfold a coil shape to get the flat pattern? When I try to unfold the attached part I get an error message (see attached error_msg.jpg). We have been using AutoPOL to unfold these kind of shapes (which works fine). But since we have a very old version which we really need to upgrade, I was wondering if nowadays Inventor could handle coil unfolds.
If this will not work with the current IV2013 release, will this then be implemented in a future release? Are there any alternatives or should I just go for the AutoPOL upgrade?

i'm using illustrator cs5. making a pattern containing a pattern. i have some illustrations that i've put a simple polka dot pattern behind. in order for illustrator to accept it as pattern, i've been expanding the polka dot part before dragging it over to the swatches panel. however, when i do this it slows everything down tremendously and usually makes the system crash.

I'm trying to repurpose some artwork and am running into an issue. In the image below, I simply want to delete the bottom right corner of the blue box so that the orange background is visible along the right edge of the curved shape and the blue box is visible along the left edge of the curved shape. But I cannot figure out how to do this. I've tried all the Pathfinder choices and none work. How can I do this? CS6, Windows 7.

I'm trying to cover a section of letters that have been outlines with a red box over a serif for a homework project. HOWEVER. Everytime I do this, it looks like I have it all lined up and when I make another point, the points move on its own to be off and not cover the object Say I complete the box and try to cover the object by just dragging and dropping, it will avoid that area and move it off to one side or the other but never align with the actual object I'm trying to cover for a smooth and even coverage. Trying to get the red box to cover the black serif and it won't do it.

I'm new to Adobe Illustrator (CS5) and, as the topic says, have an very basic question: how to hide a shape behind another shape? (say a star shape behind a rectangle)
I've looked up on tutorials and such and from what I've seen, the layers order containing each of the objects decides how the occlusion should occur, however I've tried doing that but with no luck, am I missing something here?

I am trying to create a pattern swatch for this shape, but it doesn't seem to be possible to find the edge of this pattern. Take a look at the image I inserted, the colored boxes are the shape that will be repeated.
The next picture is an example of how the shape is repeated (in a clipping mask):
Here is an example ai file from my dropbox: [URL] ....
I want to be able to apply this pattern to many different shapes very quickly, so a pattern swatch would be super useful. Either way, I would really like to know the answer to this puzzle.

I am using Illustrator CS3 on a Mac 10.5.8.
I am trying to create a compound shape from a compound shape I have prepared.
The first part works okay. I can combine the hexagon-compound-shape I have created from multiple hexagon shapes.
I then want to cut away the edges on a part of the compound shape (using a box of 4 rectangles), which is supposed to give me a rectangle with only the lines from the compund-shape inside this rectangle (image 1).
But when I cut away the box around my hexagon-compound-shape (using the Pathfinder window), the hexagon-compound shape inside behaves strangely, with only some of the lines showing and other lines missing (image 2).
I would like the rectangles to simply just cut away the lines that the rectangles are covering, and leave behind the lines in my hexagon-compound-shape, as they appeared in image 1, and not having hexagon-compound-shape changing which lines appear and disappear.

Having trouble saving a pattern in 64bit Illustrator? Seems to work fine in 32bit but only saves the original symbol (1 time) in 64. Follow the same procedure in each case, drag symbol (or place own symbol) to library then to document, make pattern (all works fine) but then "save a copy" in 64 only saves the original symbol not the pattern(in my case).... 32bit saves the pattern.

So I have been hired to map a pattern onto a picture of a bag so it looks like the pattern is on that bag. I have the whole adobe creative cloud so I have all the programs I could possibly use but I don't know how to make the bag look like it has a pattern on it. I know to to creat a geometrical shape, revolve it, and map a symbol onto it and I know to to make a symbol but what I'm trying to figure out is just to have a plain image and map a pattern on that.

I have some 3D sand in a bottle and I'm trying to map a sand symbol to it, but it's coming up way to large. Illustrator will not let me duplicate the image when I try apply it through 3D extrude & bevel - map art option. It doesn't seem like this should be a difficult task. Basically, my sand picture is 1000px x 1000px. I saved it as a jpeg, then imported it into my swatch gallery in illustrator (pretty sure that's the correct way). When I try to apply it to my sand using "map art" I have the option to "scale to fit" which distorts the image horribly. I want it to be a 1:1 ratio, if that makes sense, only smaller and duplicated 10x or whatever to cover the whole object. It's not a seamless picture that I'm mapping, so if there's a filter that I can apply that would make it less noticable. I'll attach a screenshot of the sand to show you what I'm talking about. The top layer of sand looks almost perfect, but the bottom one looks terrible because I had to stretch symbol to cover the whole object. If you can tell from the image, each grain of sand is stretched horizontally by like 10 so it doesn't even look like sand.

I wanted to save a pattern swatch and not the whole swatch library so I deleted all the swatches until it was just the one pattern swatch. I saved it as an .ase and then opened it in another document. I noticed however that when I open the pattern in the other document it shows the default swatch library and no pattern swatch. When I save the swatch as an ai. it opens the default library as well as the pattern swatch. Is there a way to save just the pattern swatch?
