Illustrator :: Exporting Just Shape Of Image (without Canvas)
May 26, 2012
How can I export just the shapes of my image (without the canvas) so that I can place my image over the background of my website without the image still being on the canvas?
I just got CS5.1 at my job. This must be a preference, but when I adjust the Canvas size, it will constrain the image, rather than cropping the canvas. The Anchor in the Canvas Size menu appears outlined (highlighted?) which indicates that this is something in preferences that I can adjust.
So, I'm developing a game currently and have been drawing some character portraits (busts if you will) in Illustrator CC (v17.0.0 32-bit). After finishing each portrait, I need to export them into a .png file that I can then use with MSPaint.
My troubles are that I always run into one or more of the following problems each time I export an image:
If I save the image at 72ppi, the exported images are the correct size but, they have jagged edges, which just aren't acceptable for my project. If I save the image at say 300ppi, the exported images are blown up and are too big but, they have smooth edges, which, while I want smooth edges, I cannot work with the increase size of the images.Sometimes exporting the images causes a new line around the smooth edges (I think I've heard this effect called a Halo or something along those lines), which is also unacceptable because I need a transparent background. Also, if I resize the blown up image manually, it causes develops the third problem.
What I'm after basically is to be able to export the image on my artboard into a .png file, have export at the same width and height it does when I export it at 72ppi, while keeping the edges smooth like they are when exporting it at 300ppi.
As a side note, I currently don't have a suscription/access to photoshop and don't have a way this month to gain access and though there are freeware programs that do a lot of what Photoshop is capable of, I can't seem to figure them out. I've mentioned this just in-case potential solutions require photoshop
Not sure if this should go under Photoshop or Illustrator, but whenever I export an image to Photoshop it gets flattened and I can't do anything with it. I've checked and double checked that Write Layers, Max Editability etc is ticked but then I get a box saying "some containers in AI have been flattened".
In AICS6 I have a compound path made of two half-circle looking shapes. They have to be separate because they are puzzle pieces. Inside of this I am placing an AI illustration that is a group of over 100 shapes. The problem is this: Once inside the compound path it is impossible to adjust the position of either the placed image or the path container. Let's say I want to move the path around the image. If I use the direct seletion tool it will only select part of the path. This happens even if I group the two parts of the path. It then wants to deform the half-circles rather than move them. If I select both halves of the compound path and try moving it with the keyboard arrows nothing moves.
If I select both with the white arrow and then switch to the black arrow the result is the same. OK, dead end. The other option is to move the image and keep the path container stationary. When I select the image with the direct seletion tool, however, it only selects one of the hundreds of vector shapes making up the image. Even if they are grouped, it will only pick the one part. This is really amazing because it works so easily in InDesign, but you can't make the kind of picture boxes in ID that I need nor the type of clipping paths I want in Photoshop. It is best done in AI, but as is often the case there is a critical feature missing that is found in another part of the so-called "suite" to do something that shoud be simple. I'm hoping that's just it: that I'm missing something really simple. don't tell me to raster the vector image. I know that would work, but that is not a solution. That is a concession. If that is the only way, however, I'll do it.
I'm trying to export an image map from Illustrator CS6. However I can't get it to save the HTML.
I've setup my hotspots etc. However when I do "Save for Web", there is no option to save "Images & HTML". It only gives me the option of "Image Only".
The only way I've been able to get the HTML is to click on "Preview" from the "Save for Web" screen, and then copy and paste the image map code from there.
I've also tested it with slices, and same thing. There just seems to be no way to get it to generate a HTML file.
Is there some other way I'm supposed to get it to create the HTML?
I am trying to get more familiar with Illustrator in meanwhile. Still have difficulties with some tasks.
I ve got designed a shape in illustrator which has to be need filled with image like a background. Imagine we have a circle and what I need is to fill only circle with costum picture, how to do that?
I can't seem to export more than 1 shape file in PSP X6. When I open a new 200x200 pixel vector file and use the pen tool to create a shape it will not save internally by PSP x6 under any name but "New Path" no matter what name I give the file or the vector layer name.
Whenever I export a second shape I get a pop-up window titled "Export Shape Library" that asks for a name for my new shape. When I enter a unique file name for my new shape I get another pop-up window titled "Duplicate shape names" with a listing of the supposed duplicate file(s). The only name showing though is "New Path". I have never named any of my shapes "New Path" nor named any of my vector layers "new Path" yet I always get this Duplicate shape names pop-up window containing "New Path" as the offending name to resolve.
Whenever I try to use the one shape I did save as "MyShape.PspShape" is shows up as "New Path" in the Preset Shapes listing. I accessed my only saved shape by selecting Preset shape tool/Preset shape then selecting the Shape list(from the tool options palette) and then select the Category "Preset Shapes" from the drop down. It shows up with the name "New Path".
Is there some setting I'm missing so "New Path" will not be the only name saved internally by PSP X6?
I've tried deleting all the files I've created in PSP X6 with the extension ".PspShape " and then restarted PSP X6 and I still am stuck with the "New Path" problem when I export a shape. The one shape I can export is saved on my hard drive with the unique name I gave it but PSP X6 still identifies the shape as being "New Path".
I have to convert my ACAD drawing to shape files for a GIS user. I have figured out how create a polygon, point or line and add object data with the tables. I have my ACAD drawing setup to the requested coordinate system but when I send them the shape files they are telling me that they get a error in ArchGIS stating "an extent that is not consistent with the associated spatial reference information". I am using Civil 3D 2012.
I would like to know how to export a hatch shape as a shape file so that it can be used in ArcGIS. I am running C3D 2013 with Map 3D and ArcMap10. I have tried the Output as SDF and the map3d export and I haven't been able to get either to work. I don't have a problem exporting lines, points or polygons.
I am rarely new to map 3d. What I would like to do is to export 3 dem surface in any kind of format, so that I could open it in 3d max.
I know how to generate Contours, but when I export them to dwg and later open in autocad architecture there are missing info on z coordinate - so everything is flat.
Is there some way to make .3ds file or .dwg file so that would really look like a 3d terrain in ACAD architecture or 3d max?
I outlined my text and subtracted it (and the tree image) from the black background. When I did this both appear thinner - particularly the tree.
If I then take the original version and the new subtracted version, and view them both overlayed one on top of the other in wire frame (outline) mode, there is no difference in the actual lines.
It seems to be a problem with the way illustrator previews the images. This wouldn't concern me, but when I export the file as a jpeg, the lines also appear thinner in the export.
I can create a manual solution by offsetting the path before subtracting, but this isn't ideal.
What does it mean when Illustrator v.15.1.0 ceases to contract a shape using offset paths and will only expand a shape? Seems like only yesterday I could render both ways. Wait a minute, it was only yesterday! Why would it suddenly stop funtioning?
I'm trying to repurpose some artwork and am running into an issue. In the image below, I simply want to delete the bottom right corner of the blue box so that the orange background is visible along the right edge of the curved shape and the blue box is visible along the left edge of the curved shape. But I cannot figure out how to do this. I've tried all the Pathfinder choices and none work. How can I do this? CS6, Windows 7.
I'm trying to cover a section of letters that have been outlines with a red box over a serif for a homework project. HOWEVER. Everytime I do this, it looks like I have it all lined up and when I make another point, the points move on its own to be off and not cover the object Say I complete the box and try to cover the object by just dragging and dropping, it will avoid that area and move it off to one side or the other but never align with the actual object I'm trying to cover for a smooth and even coverage. Trying to get the red box to cover the black serif and it won't do it.
basically what I did was I wanted a certain part of an image and I used the eraser tool along with adding the alpha channel so I can get rid of everything in the image but a cropped version of it (basically erasing around what I want to keep). How do I fit the canvas to this oddly shaped image now?
You can say I want to create an icon but when I save it as a .png or .jpg, I get this white background replacing the alpha channel when I just want the cropped image itself. I tried going about using the free select tool, going around the image and then using the "Fit Canvas to Selection" option but that just takes way too long.
In PS i can Magic wand selection shape from one layer, drop to sub layer and copy that selected shape from that sub layer. How do I do this in illistrator, and moreover, from multiple layer at the same time.
For instance, in PS = Import an image of gold - select a text phrse with wand - drop to gold - copy paste = gold text.
I'm new to Adobe Illustrator (CS5) and, as the topic says, have an very basic question: how to hide a shape behind another shape? (say a star shape behind a rectangle)
I've looked up on tutorials and such and from what I've seen, the layers order containing each of the objects decides how the occlusion should occur, however I've tried doing that but with no luck, am I missing something here?
I have both Photoshop CS6 and CS4 and they both are not opening the image. when I open RAW format files, they open up okay IN Camera Raw but when I am done in there and open them in PS the file displays for a millisecond on the canvass and then a black screen of hate pops up. I tried unistalling PS CS6 and that didn't work. I also tried reinstalling my newest AMD driver for my Radoen 6870 2G card but that didn't work. I then proceeded to update to Win7-Service Pack 1 update and that didn't do anything either.
JPEGS also do not display in PS as well. I am not sure but I think I might have to downgrade my disply driver to get this to work. My system specs are displayed below.

Image canvas flickers on windows 8 cannot do any editing already tried the following method what else I can do Have intel i3 processor with latest raphics drivers installed.
When I attempt to drag the image onto the "other" canvas (that has text) my red background on the "other" canvas goes black. I'm assuming it has something to do with the layering of the image I am trying to drag...but I can't seem to figure it out.
I'm using Gimp 2.8 on Fedora 17 i686. I have noticed that when I cancel out of set image canvas size and return to set image canvas size I have no preview image. I was wondering if this is a problem with Gimp
If I paste an image which is larger than the canvas size, a part of the pasted image will be outside the canvas. How can I resize the canvas so it will reveal only the image outside the canvas but no extra white space is shown.
By using the built in "Resize canvas" function, there is a lot of trial and error involved.
