Illustrator :: Colouring Paths Of Same Object Differently?
Nov 7, 2012
I hope I'm using the right terminology here... imagine a square drawn by Pen tool. A square with a stroke and fill. What I would like to do is to "none" colour two opposite sides (strokes) of the square while keeping the fill color inside. What is the best way (or any way for that matter) of doing this?

I am having some trouble with a file in Illustrator CS6. Within a layer, when I add a fill to an object, the fill doesn't block out the object paths beneath. For instance, say I have a square object overlapping a circle object in Layer 1. The square object is above the circle in the layer. When I add a fill to the square, the circle stroke still shows through the square even though the overlapped part should be blocked out by the fill. The square is set to normal visibility, and I have made sure that there are no duplicate paths that would account for what I am seeing. (I.e., it's not a case where there's a second identical circle path that is on top of the square, so that it remains visible in spite of the fill.)
Other details:
- I'm mainly working with a white fill, but the problem is the same with fills of any color
- When there's a fill color in the circle path as well, the circle's fill color *is* blocked out—just not its stroke.
- I have restarted Illustrator and restarted my computer and these have not changed anything.
- There are other layers within the same document where the normal layering rules work.
- I tried copy/pasting some of the problem objects into a new document, and in the new document, the fill works properly.
- If I move the problem objects to another layer, then the fill works as it should. But as I'm dealing with a number of paths, it doesn't make sense to create a layer for each to solve the problem.
I can't tell if it's a matter of working in too large or complex a file.

I have a .pdf output from a program I use at work. The .pdf can be opened in illustrator (IL) and I have about a bezillion of objects which are mostly all paths (0.5 stroke and no fill of course).
Due to the large number of objects, IL crashes after a while.
Is there a way to transform/join the paths from one row into one object? I tried rasterize, but the problem is that I can't change the color of the according row afterwards - and I need to be able to change the color later.
Stuff I tried that didn't work"
- Object>Paths>clean up
- Object>Paths>simplify

After doing a live trace and expand on an object I now need to separate one object into two. I tried using both the scissors and the knife tool and neither tool work. When I select two anchor points on opposite side of each other to split the object it just adds a line in the middle with the object as a whole still in tact.

.... so as to be able to apply a fill over the whole object??
This might sound more obvious than it actually is in this case so i'll explain. My partners artwork contains a lot of linework and unfortunately, i can't get the degree of accuracy i need with a continous path. Therefore, the problem i have is joining lots of paths (some of which have endpoints joining midway through other paths) to make a single object with the strokes preserved, so i can apply a fill to the overall object or to individual sections.
I've tried unite, join and all the other commands that i'm aware of but all give undesired effects. I've tried using a compund path but all that does is make them act as one but still doesn't do what i need with regards to filling the object.
A simplified example of what i need to achieve is this...... create a square using 4 seperate paths and then a cross through the middle using more seperate paths to create a 4 box square. I need to be able to make this one object so i can fill each individual square a different colour if need be?

I'm having problems getting what I want on Illustrator CS6. This is the shape that I'm working on: [URL]
I got two paths, one for the inner outline, one for the outer. I want this to be one object, looking just like that, where red is the fill, and black is the outline. Simple as that. [URL] - this is what i want.
So, the inner "circle" is not filled with anything, beacause my object is this "frame" outside. But since I have two seperate paths, I'm filling the outer path with colour, and I get:
[URL] the outer filling is red, the outside is transparent, which is good, but the inside is red because the inner path has no filling.
Right, so next I fill the inner path with white and it looks almost good: [URL]
But the inside is not transparent, it's an "illusion" and everything will be great on a white background, but that's not the case.
I want to convert these to paths into one object to behave exactly like I showed in the first image. Red is the fill, black is the outline. And I plan to use gradient mesh heavily on that shape, so that has to work to.
Bad quality, just doing some quick previews on Photoshop.

Example simple dotted pattern. Is it possible to create swatch so that color can be easily changed afterwards.
Like I can create pattern brush, so that colour is changeable with any colour in my palette.

Trying to work with gradient mesh colouring the nodes and every few nodes I colour the selection stops working and i cant select the mesh. Doesn't matter if which selection tool I use or even the gradient mesh tool its still the same issue. I can see the mesh lines and when i click with any tool on the mesh lines will show up in black but i cant select it to see the nodes. The only way that i've found around this is to save the work, close the file and reopen it. It's starting to be a pain as im having to do this every couple minutes.
I've done all CS6 updates and still getting the same issues so now im stumped.

I want to join two paths to create a shape that I can fill but at the same time retain one of the original paths (the red one in the image below). I can copy the path I want to retain but surely there is a more elegant solution. See below for for an illustration:

I'm playing with the 3D tools in Photoshop CS5 Extended for a friend. He provided an .obj file of a tool part and it opens just fine as a complex, shaded object.
Question: Is there a way to generate simple outlines of the object and export those outlines as paths to Illustrator?

Ok. I have a problem with colors not matching between Illustrator CS5 documents. I am often emailed documents with pantone colors selected in them. Later, sometimes I need to create another document using those same pantone colors. The problem is, these two documents print the pantone colors differently. In fact, on my screen the file colors look different side-by-side. I figured it was a color settings or color profile issue, so I went in and checked both files. Everything was the same (Working CMYK: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2, Settings North America General Purpose 2, CMYK Preserve Numbers (Ignore Linked Profiles)) . When I paste pantone samples from one document into the other, they match what's in each other's documents, but the two documents themselves don't look the same and don't print the same.
What color setting could I be overlooking to cause this difference? I don't particularly care if they match on-screen, but it's the fact that they actually print different colors from the same pantone swatch that is the trouble. A blue pantone from one file will print purple from a different file.

So i have this piece and i need to be able to colour different sections of the stroke around the whole piece with different colours. Also, i need to be able to change the width uniformly on sections between anchor points. I DO NOT want to use live paint as it takes away the sections of stroke i have tapered off already, however, the effect you get when using the live paint selection tool is exactly what i need
Is there a way of doing this at all?? It seems that i should be able to do it but i'm not able to find the right button, option or combination of both.......

I need to divide a shape, say ellipse or similar, into 1 or 2 parts and then color the parts different colors and stroke the borders of each part. I don't want to cut the shape up, just keep it as a multi-colored object.I've tried scissors and similar tools but they cut and this is not what I want.

I have some 2 coluor artwork consisting of 2 x pantone colours purple and grey.
Within the artwork is a stripe pattern swatch consisting of the same colours. On screen the colours are fine and I've checked all the colour settings and these are fine too.
Why however when i print the artwork does the pattern print in a different colour?

When I place a Photoshop eps into a PSD file the image doesn't come over with a transparent background. I do have an active clipping path, it shows up transparent when placed in Illustrator and InDesign. Am I mistaking in thinking that the image would be clipped when placed?
I am using CC, but this problem has been in both CS6 and CS4.

Wouldn't it be handy to be able to colour guide lines individually? I notice there are some lines called smart lines but I can't find out how to show those. Apparantly they automatically appear when you draw but I haven't seen them yet (I'm using CS2 on Windows XP Professional - I've read that CS3 doesn't seem to want to show them).

The RSS logo is, as we all know orange and has a nice gradient in it. Now, what I'm trying (and failing) to do, is to colour it so that I can get it to match any colour of my choosing. I've tried looking into "Match colour...", "Photo filter" and "Colour overlay" but to no aveil. I'm obviously barking up the wrong tree.

I want to do is colour in my scanned black-and-white images, but I have no idea where to start.
Basically, I'm drawing black-and-white comic strips, then scanning them in with the aim of colouring them on Photoshop. But first off, my scanner isn't great and it has left shadows that I don't want.
Secondly, it would be a brilliant help if Photoshop could somehow "recognise" which areas were black and which were white, so that all the black bits were the same colour black and all the white was really white rather than off-white in places. This would also help when it comes to filling in the colour, because I could then click "fill colour" (or whatever the appropriate command is) and it wouldn't just fill in a tiny pixel because it's a slightly different shade of white to the pixels next to it.

I want to make colouring book pictures for my students from photographs of themselves (want to see kids get excited about something - give them a picture of themselves to colour in). Right now I am using the cartoon filter, desaturating the image and then painstakingly selecting by colour, each greyscaled set of pixels and then cutting them so that in effect, the image becomes a traced black and white image. I am wondering if there is an easier way to do this - I have tried using the threshold and levels filters - but I find that it makes the image too pop-arty, like those Che Guevara type T-shirt graphics. Ideally I want to literally make the image look like colouring book picture or a stamp. Is there an easier way to do that without having to pick and delete the greyscaled parts of the image?

I trace a lot of line drawings in my work to add regions of color or to create a layered watercolor effect.
In previous versions on Illustrator (I currently use CS6 but I think CS5 worked the way I liked) I could set the opacity to whatever I wanted and new pencil or pen objects would be trasparent as I drew them. Now my paths are opaque no matter what my setting in the transparency menu and it's impossible to see what I'm tracing.
I used to be very productive drawing blobs of color and overlaying quickly for a nice watercolor effect, but now I have to draw a blob, select it and set it's opacity, then draw my next blob and do the same thing. Very time consuming and not good for quick evaluation of whether or not my image is looking good.
