GIMP :: Fuzzy Edges Around Brush / Ink Tools
Jun 16, 2013I make cartoons, and the brush tool and ink tool are my favorites (They have a really nice effect). The problem with these is that whenever I try to color Using the fill tool, there is a light, fuzzy uncolored edge around the brush tool or ink tool's lines. It looks pretty ugly, especially up close.
How do I prevent the fuzzy edges on these tools?

Dec 6, 2008Is there any way to get an application of a brush with Wet Edges to absorb seemlessly into a previously applied area of the brush with Wet Edges? As far as I can see, if you paint a bit, say in Pattern mode, stop painting, and then start to apply the brush again, the paint visibly overlaps the previously applied colour. This makes it impossible to easily create brushed watercolour washes without keeping your brush in contact with the paper (in my case a digital tablet) all the time; if you lift it off for a second, it applies a new coat of paint (or pattern) over whatever is there already. What I'd like is to be able to get a wet edges brush to meld seamlessly into a previously applied area of paint (or pattern).
Is this possible to achieve, please?
GIMP :: Set Brush Size For Paint Brush And Eraser Separately?
Jul 5, 2012I'm using a tablet with gimp and I want to be able to set the brush size for the paint brush and also for the eraser, separately. What happens now is that I'll set the paintbrush size to 10px, paint for a little while, turn the pen over to erase and the eraser will now be at 10px. So I'll adjust the eraser size to something like 50px, erase, turn over, and now the paintbrush is at 50px. Grrrrrrr... I tried creating new brushes for both the paintbrush and the eraser, but there's no brush size option. This is my first time using gimp so I'm probably missing something.

p.s. I'm in CS2, unfortunately, so the bristle brush isn't an options

May 12, 2012In GIMP 2.8, I've been having a great deal of trouble getting good edges around elements that must be overlaid onto new items.
Such items seem to need (a) a progressive blur around the edges and inward to its center, and (b) a decreasing opacity from the edges and inward toward the center.
I cannot figure out how to satisfactorily achieve this. I use this all the time, but now in 2.8 I cannot. (The only "solution" I can think of is using a fuzzy brush around the entire perimeter, but that does not blur it, and, of course, it takes forever....there's no point in even having a matte if you're going to do it manually!)

Aug 24, 2006I just want a brush for PSCS that I can run across an image to look like someone, or something, was biting the edge.
It doesn't have to be fancy or super "real" looking. Just better looking then using a round eraser and chopping it up. Or a "leaf" brush or some other thing.
I also have another question. It's probably quick to answer so I'll just ask it here too. When layering photos over the top of each other; what is the best way to do gradient transparencies around one image, so the image below shows through and looks nice?
I try using just the eraser with a dropped down opacity, but there is no smoothness to the transparency. I tried erasing with a feathered selection, but that was erasing the main part of the "top" image along with the edges.
Whatever technique it is, it would have to be useable on a round image, or square, or utterly hacked up shape. Simply so it has a smooth transparency to the image below.
I can do this easy with a transparent gradient, IF the bottom was just a solid color.

Solution :Here is what I did in GIMP (how to do it in PS):
Open the image
Add another layer underneath the first.
- sample the green and paint the new layer with it
Select the original and do "Alpha to Selection"
"Merge Visible Layers"
Add Layer Mask -> Selection
Apply Layer Mask
Save as PNG
- Important: In GIMP there is a checkbox option to save transparent colors. Make sure it is checked!Reimport into the SketchUp material and it should work (did for me).I want to remove all white edges , i'm okay with black edges.

Mar 29, 2011What I am trying to do is, I have an image. I would like to fade the image edges into the background which is colored black. So in essence, I want the image to meld into the background which is black. How is this done. I tried so many things and I cant seem to get it right.
Every time I get close, to getting it right, my image fades somewhat using the gradient tool and a new opaque white layer but I get white and silver boxes on the edges of my image?

Jul 17, 2012I have an image I want to cut the white space out of and make it transparent. I can use the magic wand tool to highlight everything I want to remove, but when I hit delete on my keyboard nothing happens.
It's originally a JPG image with a white background that I am pasting into GIMP.
I attempted to magic wand what I wanted to keep and then to copy/paste it to a new document, but the image is too intense to highlight it, it is much easier to just highlight the whitespace surrounding it.

Looks good except that the edges of the image are also being blended. Blended with what? The edge? I don't get it.

Feb 13, 2013Just did a beginning drawing and placed it too close to an edge. Tried figuring out how to move it away from the edges. When I select it with one of the select tools, and then use the move tool, it moves the whole canvas (right word?). I did not want to move the canvas, just the object on the canvas, or layer, or background, whatever it is called.
Perhaps there is no way to move this. If that is the case, then how to I make the background bigger, and keep the object where it is so I can draw around the object?

Dec 29, 2011I have made a couple pretty nice text images, for friends, and myself. Many times this text image will have a border and consequently a transparency along a corner of the image because they are not always perfectly rectangle.
The problem is the images keep saving with a fine white line at the corner's of my image. How can I make this sharper so it doesn't have this white edge that stands out from the image?

Aug 4, 2012Is there a stock filter or one that can be added to GIMP that sort of rounds the edges of sharp parts of an image?
I'm looking for a filter or effect that can round the sharp edges of a bitmap image of a font, to give it that 'Xerox Machine' effect where a sharp font looses it's sharp corners and gets a rounded effect from being copied over and over.
I already tried the 'Gaussian Blur' filter, but that just creates soft edges and not the rounded corners that I'm looking for. The effect that I'm looking for is not fuzzy or blurred, but is more of a 'rounded corners' effect... it can be seen in the attached image that is below.

GIMP :: How To Fade Edges Of Oval Slowly To White
Mar 30, 2012I've been using gimp for awhile now and have had great success using itto retouch about a zillion scans of old family photographs. but other than then few things I need in order to do that (paintbrush, clone tool, rotate tool and crop) I am still largely ignorant of how to use gimp. (There's just so much functionality in there, and I'm sure that I don't even have any use for about 90% of it.)
Anyway, a relative just sent me an old old family photo that some nitwit,perhaps a generation or two ago, did some seriously violence to with a pair of scissors. To salvage this one and to make it look presentable I really need to be able to take the scan I have of it and crop it into a oval shape.(Yes, it is a portrait.)
So anyway, how do I do this? It isn't obviously. I already did manage to figure out how to make a selection of the exact size and shape (and location)of oval that I want, and I _did_ make a selection like that... at least I_thought_ that I did... but then when I did crop-to-selection I ended up with the picture cropped to a rectangular shape, where the rectangle in question is, quite apparently, the rectangle which only and exactly contained the oval that I had selected earlier.
I'm sort-of guessing that what I really want is gonna end up being another one of these things that ends up involving multiple layers... yes? I mean of course, what I _really_ want to end up with is an image that _is_ in fact a rectangle, but everything outside of my selected oval has to end up being painted total white (255).
This is a strictly B&W image, BTW... just like all really old family photographs everywhere. How to fade the edges of the oval slowly to white.

Apr 15, 2011I am trying to create a puzzle from an image but I am having some trouble with the edges of each puzzle piece. Basically in short what I am doing is this.
1) I load my image in gimp (image layer).
2) Create new white layer (puzzle layer).
3) Use Filters -> Render -> Pattern -> Jigsaw...
4) From the Jigsaw windows I select; Bevel width; 0, Highlight; 0, Jigsaw style; curved.
5) I then select the white area from the puzzle later, copy this area from the image layer, and paste this on a new layer (piece layer).
6) I duplicate the piece layer (duplicate layer).
7) Paint the piece in white in duplicate layer.
8) In duplicate later I select Filters -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur
9) In piece layer I select Filters -> Map -> Bump Map
10) I select the duplicate layer as layer.
My problem is that the edges look really bad. Is there any way how I can make them look better? That is, not so much crippled?My aim is to have each puzzle piece in a different layer since I have to save them in different files. I checked several tutorials on how to create puzzles but all give me similar results.

Jun 27, 2011Basically whilst using a tablet to draw the outline, i want to fill in the space with a colour. however, this leaves a pixellated edge around the fill, resulting in the piece looking far from perfect. how can i get around this without having to hand fill each individual pixel? is there any way to turn the sensitivity on my tablet off on the tool so that i just draw thick black lines instead of ones that get lighter around the edges?

Feb 7, 2006I try to anti-alias or matte the edges of a shape in order to make a transparent gif/png of it without having pixelated 'hard edges'. The current situation is that I have a selection of some shape in GIMP. Below the layer with the shape in it, I stroke the selection of my shape with a lighter colour by using a fuzzy paintbrush. This gives me some sort of anti-alising effect, but it isn't any close to the matte option in the 'export for web' dialog of Photoshop. Because I really do like GIMP, I am curious if there is a better way to get anti-aliased shapes using Gimp?
