GIMP :: When Try To Smudge A Layer It Does Not Work

View 5 RepliesFor the projects I'm working on, I use the same template beneath the different layer groups of each different project. When I move a "color" layer into the group, however, it doesn't show up like it's supposed to. It behaves as if the 'color' layer is a blank layer, and has no effect. Is there any way to get this to work or?...
ALSO: I can't open images by URL.
I was wondering if anyone knew what is wrong with my smudge tool. When I go to use it and apply it to my image, it takes a while to show the affect. Everything else in my photoshop works fine. Oh yeah, I use PS CS if that makes any difference.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI find myself creating new layers and making them slightly transparent all the time. But when I do this using Gimp it does not work right? This is what I am doing:
Add new layer
use transparency/opaque slider to change the setting
what happens is that the new layer stays solid until it goes below 50% on the slider and then it disappears, above 50% and it is back. It is like the 50% mark is an on/off switch for the layer.
I am not quite sure what happened, but now my smudge brush (I have CS version) will not smudge, it only colors. I'm not quite sure how to fix it short of reinstalling photoshop again, and I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI created a smudged brush stroke using several stokes with the same paint brush on one layer. I would like to change the color of the smudge but the bucket fill keeps filling each stroke. Is there a way to make all of those strokes one image now? So I can bucket fill with one click?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to use the smudge tool in gimp (2.6.2). I click on it and I try to smudge the image. But gimp seems to ignore the tool. So I decided to play with the Opacity, Rate and even the scale. No luck.
So then I thought, ok maybe the changes are to small for me to see. So I decided to zoom all the way in and try the smudge tool. No change at all.
The odd thing is it is a single layer image. I just tried an experiment, I opened the photo I wanted to smudge with clicked on the tool and tried blending the area. Then I closed it, it didn't ask me if i wanted to save the "changes" I just made.
The smudge tool does not have an circular with an line across it saying I cant use it. Here is the image I am trying to fix up .
There's a smudge of chocolate or something right above my head (the kid on the left). The yellow/red marks are from when my brother tried to scratch it off with his fingernail and exposed the background. How do I get this to look presentable?
View 5 Replies View Relatedthere's a way to setup a keyboard shortcut to adjust pressure and rate for airbrush and smudge tools? I swear I've been up and down the whole shortcuts list... and perhaps I'm just missing something...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a GIF image that I need to add something to, but I don't want to add it to every single individual layer. Is there a way to add it over or behind the entire GIF so that it remains static while the GIF's frames cycle - like a watermark or something?
Or if not, is there maybe a script-fu that copies and merges a selected layer over every other individual layer automatically, without messing them up?
I know I'll probably have to just end up manually adding it to each layer, (so many layers...).
How do I make the edges of the top layer blend in with the bottom layer so you cannot tell that there is a line??? I want to make it look like a heart but I don't know how to smoothen the edges to make it look like it is part of the bottom layer so when I merge the layers there is no goofy lines looking like someone cropped another fire picture out...

I have two similar images where the subject has moved between the images. I have them in the same file as two separate layers and am using the subtract layer mode to identify where they differ, (roughly!).
I want to be able to use the subtract layer as a completely new layer so that I can make edits to it. The only way I have found to do this at the moment is to 'copy visible', but this still brings other elements that I don't want from where the layers overlap.
Why can't I align a single layer that is inside a layer group? The align tool would always select the top most layer group as the 'boundary' for alignment, thus automatically selecting the whole layers inside of it and align them as a group.
Is this a bug or just GIMP's weakness? It definitely reduces the layer group's usefulness.
Long time gimp user, but for basic tasks only. Now I would like to get my hands dirty a little more. I'm trying to setup a workflow that involves CAD, Inkscape and GIMP. Basically I did some architectural drawing in CAD, used Inkscape to clean up and convert DXG into SVG, so that I can use paths into GIMP. I did a script that for every path creates a new transparent layer with a layer mask using the path, so I can add fills and textures quickly. Now to the problem: say I want to add a texture from another image, i paste the image into the appropriate layer, then I want to transform the texture a bit (scale, rotate and perspective). the result is that the layer mask is transformed, too. I tried to disable the mask during transform, but didn't work.
Is there a way to workaround this? maybe some layer mode instead of layer mask?
I just downloaded GIMP 2.8 (on Windows 7) and was using the layer groups to organize a project I'm doing. I noticed that whenever I put the layers into the layer group, nothing I do to them actually affects the image (for example if I change the opacity of the layer, it doesn't actually change). If I drag them out of the layer group they function perfectly; sometimes if I edit them and then drag them into the group they also work fine.
As I was writing this post I tested dragging a layer set to "dodge" into the group and it didn't work. It kept the dodge setting, but it looked as if it was on normal; however, I drug another layer set on dodge into the group and it worked fine.
Is this feature just broken on Windows, or does it not work like I thought (where you can drag them in and edit them individually, or edit them all by editing the layer group itself)?
I have the latest gimp.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow would you take a layer mask, and make it its own layer? If you try copying and pasting a layer mask, you can only dock it to another layer.
View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to erase on one layer and have the other layer showing through. I believe I have Gimp 2.6. But I am not sure.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn order to make a copy of a layer. I know I make a copy of the layer, but then I'm having issues taking the layer, and reversing it horizontally so that I can create a new layer using the previous copied layer. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, and I've been experimenting with it. I'm now able to create really nice and curvy looking hills, but still just not able to copy it, and reverse it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to know if there is a way I can transform a layer by manipulating the layer itself.
For instance, I can select Layer-->Transform-->ArbitraryRotation, and then use the mouse directly on the layer, giving me a "realtime" vies of the rotation.
Is there any way to do this with something like the "Scale Layer" function, so I could transform a layer directly, while seeing in realtime the difference the scaling makes?
I'm putting some images together and when I put one layer on top of the other, the bottom image bleeds thru. The top layer shows 100% opacity but still see thru it.
I've been working at removing the white background from the image and replacing it with an alpha channel. What can I do to make the top image solid?
I can't seem to copy a part of a layer into another layer. When I do that, the pasted layer becomes invisible. The pasted layer seems to be visible only when it's on its own layer.
Please see attached xcf.
I did was put a levels adjustment, and a little patch layer abover the BG, but the BG wont accept any changes, cloning etc. i'm lost --any help appreciated.
the patch is just a small piece of the bg, so the rest of the bg should accept work.
I've tried selecting all different layers, and all eyeballs are on.
Whenever I try to use layer properties it doesn't do anything.
View 4 Replies View RelatedCan't seem to get "Layer > Rename layer ..." to activate with Actions, whether I try "Insert Menu Item" or "Record Action".I have created and used many actions over the years in Photoshop, and almost all of them seem to work fine in Photoshop CS6, except this one.In CS5.x the command was listed as "Layer Properties...", which brought up the DIALOG.
In CS 6.x that command has been removed from the LAYER PALETTE MENU. Instead, the COMMAND has been renamed "Rename Layer..." in the MAIN MENU, and it no longer brings up a DIALOG. Editing is now done directly in the LAYER NAME TEXT FIELD and it was clear that the old ACTION can't work as-is.
SO, I deleted it and rebuilt it as folllows:
I created a NEW ACTION From the ACTION PALETTE's MENU I selectedThe ALERT POPUP came upFrom the MAIN MENU I selectedThe ALERT POPUP updated to show "Layer:Rename Layer".I clicked OK, but nothing showed up under the new ACTION in the ACTIONS PALETTE ...I thought perhaps there was a bug with the command in CS6, so I tried the RECORD ACTION process instead.
with the ART LAYER visible and selected I clicked RECORD I selected and again. This time the ART LAYER activated properly .I changed the LAYER NAME and hit RETURN.In the ACTIONS PALETTE, the SET CURRENT LAYER ACTION was automatically added.I know I don't want "123" to be the LAYER NAME, but I thought I could manually edit the ACTION by adding a DIALOG BOX control.I clicked STOP to try out the KEY COMMANDI manually changed the LAYER NAME back to and hit RETURN to set it.I ran the ACTION by typing CMD-SHFT-F9As expected it dutifully edited the LAYER NAME Now I wanted to intercept the renaming step, so I ticked the DIALOG BOX option in the ACTION thinking it would give me some method of keying in a name during PLAYBACK.The first few times I ran the ACTION SCRIPT, it brought up the LAYER STYLE dialog. What?I thought something might be amiss with my FUNCTION KEYS, so I checked my KEYBOARD settings in SYSTEM PREFERENCES.This option was originally ON.so I UNCHECKED it OFF and closed SYSTEM PREFS.Back in PS it didn't seem to make a difference, so I thought maybe I needed to RESTART to activate this level of SYSTEM PREFERENCE.I RESTARTED, double-checked that the FUNCTION KEY OPTION was UNCHECKED, and tried the ACTION again. Now the ACTION didn't run at all, so I knew the FUNCTION KEY OPTION was supposed to remain CHECKED.I RECHECKED it, RESTARTED, and returned to PHOTOSHOP.When I ran the ACTION this time, the LAYER STYLE dialog DID NOT come up. The LAYER was simply renamed "123" with no way to edit it during PLAYBACK. What?
In the end, I played with inserting a STOP or CONDITIONAL, I tried PLAYBACK OPTIONS, I inserted other random COMMANDS and played with reordering them. Everything works perfectly, but I simply can't seem to gain control over editing the LAYER NAME itself with an ACTION. I assume the root of the problem is that there is no longer a DIALOG BOX that controls the LAYER NAME, and therefore there's no moment in PLAYBACK that can give me DIALOG BOX control over the name.
I'm using Photoshop 14.1.1 on a Mac with OS 10.8.4.
When I have a string of text in the clipboard and try to paste it as a suffix to a layer name, the paste command is not working at all. It works on CS6, though.
I am a relative novice at CS6. I am using the software to paint, not retouch photographs. I cannot make the B and E layer style work. The other styles work and I suspect there is something basic about this one that I am missing.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have 3 layers.
The first is at the top. It's a radial gradient which is set to the layer blending mode "Color".
The second is in the middle. It is a black and white difference cloud layer that is set to overlay.
At the bottom is my third layer. It is supposed to be a bunch of stars. By stars, I mean a noise filter applied to a black canvas.
The problem is that if I "blend visible" or "blend down", it looks nothing like what it showed me when i turned on the visibility on on all of the layers. It also looks completely different when i zoom in.
I'm using CS2 for Win. I've got an important file that will not accept layer styles. The layers appear to be "styled" on the layer stack, but nothing previews or shows up on the actual layer. I've created new layers; they don't take styles either. Other files in the system - including new ones - work okay; it's just this one that has the problem.
It could be contaminated; I accidentally saved it as a PDF with layers, and then back to a TIF. It's an 8-bit file; I've tried saving it as a PSD.
I've got a little problem with Smudge tool. you may notice hard edged corners around smudge tool strokes this only appears then you use image sampled brush with scattering for a smudge tool bug also disappear if you set the strength of smudge effect to 100% or if you use default round brush. bug appears only in Adobe Photoshop CS6, in previous version everything was Ok.
i run Ps under Windows 7 version of Photoshop is 13.0.1 x64
