I find myself creating new layers and making them slightly transparent all the time. But when I do this using Gimp it does not work right? This is what I am doing:
Add new layer
use transparency/opaque slider to change the setting
what happens is that the new layer stays solid until it goes below 50% on the slider and then it disappears, above 50% and it is back. It is like the 50% mark is an on/off switch for the layer.
I loaded one PNG pic.
I added an alpha channel to make it a transparency.
I used the select by color tool.
I clicked white & removed.
I saved. I switched to eraser - but it is acting like I'm trying to erase something off the transparency layer and won't erase anything.
I have the correct layer selected in the layers window.
I'd like to achieve an effect similar to the one shown here:

What I need to do...
1.) Take screenshots of various pages of code (did this)
2.) Use masks (or maybe not) to apply some sort of texture behind each screenshot
3.) Use a perspective effect to rotate each page of code to varying extents
4.) Use masks and transparency (or maybe not?) to paste the pages on top of each other in layers
I should be looking up and combining to get there, and with other specifics.
Regarding (1), do I want to capture screenshots of black text on a white background? Or, the reverse? Regarding (2) and (4), are these right?
For the projects I'm working on, I use the same template beneath the different layer groups of each different project. When I move a "color" layer into the group, however, it doesn't show up like it's supposed to. It behaves as if the 'color' layer is a blank layer, and has no effect. Is there any way to get this to work or?...
ALSO: I can't open images by URL.

I have spent hours on it trying to edit the original layer below the alpha transparency or adding layers, getting nowhere.
When I try to smudge a layer it does not work. What am I doing wrong?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do something that I could previously do with other image software. I want to 'paint' the transparency of a layer using the alpha channel. So when I paint black on the alpha channel it makes that part of the layer completely transparent, and white makes it completely opaque (and grey shades are in between). From what I understood of the help, this should be possible by just creating an alpha channel and painting in it. But when I try and then click back to display the RGB channel to look at the changes I've made, nothing actually changes. Whatever I seem to do to the alpha channel it doesn't actually affect the layer's transpancy at all.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have always flattened everything out of CDR whenever there is any transparencies involved, this works fine, you just have to deal with large bitmaps. Now in recent discussions some respected contributors have touted using the X3 pdf setting with Compatibility set to Ver9. That works, transparencies print without the yellow box ....fine... but.
I design with CMYK colours ( I know.. BIG discussion that has been addressed many times) and use RGB images (because they are usually client supplied or our Stock site only supplies RGB).
My problem is in my PDF settings I have everything set to export as Native which works well on the Roland using Max Impact and even if I set compatibility to PDF Ver 9 transparency will still have the yellow box.
To get transparencies to work without flattening, everything has to be exported as CMYK and as you know RGB blue goes purple when you do this and the RGB images just don't look as good.Is there a way to get transparency to work in a PDF with exporting everything as Native and using PDF Ver 9?
this thread confirms that Autodesk broke the surface transparency functionality in 2013. I imagine by the lack of response to the original thread that this is either a little used or not well published feature....

With a new HP T 7100 Plotter I can not plot bigger sizes than A0 with transparencies. Installed is the HP-GL2 and the PS Plotterdriver. I can plot from AutoCAD normal plans till a sizeformat of A0 with trasnsparencies, but with oversizes there is no plot. Plans without Transparencies can be plottet and I can plot from other programs all plans even with Transparencies. As a landscape architect I want to use the transparency on bigger plans.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm working with Photoshop CS6 Extended and in the last two days have started to have problems with some files.One of the main layers gets a strange pattern over the top of it and at closer inspection relised that the pattern was infact transparent, allowing you to see through to the background layer.

I was just wondering what the practical difference was between the Opacity of a layer and the transparency of a layer. They seem to have the same effect, but I reckon that Adobe wouldn't have seperated them for no good reason.

In CorelPHOTO-PAINT, there is a tool called the "Interactive Object Transparency Tool." This tool was simple: you'd select an object (layer) and click a start point, you then would move your cursor in the desired direction, clicking once again to complete the function. The further away the second (or end) point was, the more gradual the transformation to transparency.
I know CS2 has a Gradient Tool, but that involves colors, and I want to gradually and directionally decrease the opacity on a layer without involving color.

Kind of drilling a hole to transparency through all the layers underneath. I see that you can do similar things with adjustment layers but I couldn’t make one for transparency. Even better would be to be able to specify which underneath layers this layer will affect.

Sometimes I make a fresh transparency blank of gimp. Then I import a jpg. I expect the transparency to appear as I erase. Sometimes it erases and there is white; sometimes I erase and it's transparent. ? Isn't it supposed to be transparent?

Whenever Flickr converts a PNG-24 file to a JPG, the transparent background of the multilevel PNG gets converted to black. I do not want this. I want PNG-24 file to retain its transparency and have a background color set for handling JPG conversion.
I heard this can be done by creating a 100 percent transparent white layer, setting it as the background layer, and flattening the image.
How do I do this with Photoshop CS3?
