GIMP :: Not Erase Something Off The Transparency Layer
Jan 28, 2014I loaded one PNG pic.
I added an alpha channel to make it a transparency.
I used the select by color tool.
I clicked white & removed.
I saved. I switched to eraser - but it is acting like I'm trying to erase something off the transparency layer and won't erase anything.
I have the correct layer selected in the layers window.

Mar 22, 2012I loaded up GIMP today to find that the yellow dashed layer boundaries aren't showing within any of my drawings. The 'Show Layer Boundary' option in the 'View' menu is selected - I have even tried un-selecting, and re-selecting it again, but still does not show.
I really don't want to reinstall GIMP because I will lose my custom window configurations.
GIMP :: Showing Masks As Overlay And Command To See Layer Underneath Current One?
May 20, 20121. Is there a "show quick mask" feature for showing masks?
I know Gimp has a "*Show quick mask*" feature which shows what you have(and haven't) selected by displaying a red overlay over your image,allowing you to add to or subtract from a selection by using the paintbrush, but I haven't found a similar feature for showing masks.
Photoshop has this feature (it's called 'reveal mask' I think) and it basically just shows a red overlay of your mask on your image so that,similar to the quick mask feature in Gimp, you can see where you have and haven't masked through.
(I don't own Photoshop so I'm not sure if the red overlay shows the opacity with which you've masked through or whether or not you can edit the mask when it's being shown as a red overlay.)
2. Is there a command for showing the layer underneath the current layer I'm working on?
This is another feature that I've seen Photoshop has that is useful for blending multiple exposures (and lots of things, really).
Basically it's just a keyboard shortcut for showing the layer underneath your current when you hold down a certain keyboard command (it's not something you toggle since it's meant for quickly viewing what's on the layer underneath your current one).
I know I can press space bar to show or hide the layer I'm currently working on, but I can't do that unless I focus into the layers dialogue first. It'd be nice if I could activate that functionality from anywhere,regardless of whether I'm focused on the layers dialogue.
Do either of these features exist in Gimp?
Photoshop :: Cant Erase The Hue Layer
Mar 15, 2006I have been erasing the hue layers when i do specific pictures when i want the backround to be a different hue than the foreground. And i would select the hue layer, and just use the erase tool and it would remove that specific hue in that area... Well now i will not do that anymore. I must have checked some box on accident or somthing. when i select the eraser tool and the hue layer, it shows the eraser circle on the picture, but it will not erase anything...

May 1, 2011I have a GIF image that I need to add something to, but I don't want to add it to every single individual layer. Is there a way to add it over or behind the entire GIF so that it remains static while the GIF's frames cycle - like a watermark or something?

I know I'll probably have to just end up manually adding it to each layer, (so many layers...).

GIMP :: Copy Result Of Subtract Layer Mode To New Layer
Apr 16, 2013I have two similar images where the subject has moved between the images. I have them in the same file as two separate layers and am using the subtract layer mode to identify where they differ, (roughly!).
I want to be able to use the subtract layer as a completely new layer so that I can make edits to it. The only way I have found to do this at the moment is to 'copy visible', but this still brings other elements that I don't want from where the layers overlap.

Sep 30, 2013I am having trouble in Photoshop CS6 trying to erase outer edges on a pasted video layer I have a short animated video I am working on but when I paste an animated video from file I cannot erase the outer edges because every time I try to do this it converts the pasted video to a smart object and then when I only gives the option to rasterize the pasted video layer, after it is rasterized it becomes a static image which dosent have any animation at all. Is there any way I can erase the edges around the video layer without this happening?

GIMP :: Align Single Layer In A Layer Group?
Jun 7, 2013Why can't I align a single layer that is inside a layer group? The align tool would always select the top most layer group as the 'boundary' for alignment, thus automatically selecting the whole layers inside of it and align them as a group.
Is this a bug or just GIMP's weakness? It definitely reduces the layer group's usefulness.
GIMP :: Transform A Layer Without Moving Its Layer Mask?
Dec 14, 2012Long time gimp user, but for basic tasks only. Now I would like to get my hands dirty a little more. I'm trying to setup a workflow that involves CAD, Inkscape and GIMP. Basically I did some architectural drawing in CAD, used Inkscape to clean up and convert DXG into SVG, so that I can use paths into GIMP. I did a script that for every path creates a new transparent layer with a layer mask using the path, so I can add fills and textures quickly. Now to the problem: say I want to add a texture from another image, i paste the image into the appropriate layer, then I want to transform the texture a bit (scale, rotate and perspective). the result is that the layer mask is transformed, too. I tried to disable the mask during transform, but didn't work.
Is there a way to workaround this? maybe some layer mode instead of layer mask?
GIMP :: Layer Groups And Layer Modes / Opacity?
May 14, 2012I just downloaded GIMP 2.8 (on Windows 7) and was using the layer groups to organize a project I'm doing. I noticed that whenever I put the layers into the layer group, nothing I do to them actually affects the image (for example if I change the opacity of the layer, it doesn't actually change). If I drag them out of the layer group they function perfectly; sometimes if I edit them and then drag them into the group they also work fine.
As I was writing this post I tested dragging a layer set to "dodge" into the group and it didn't work. It kept the dodge setting, but it looked as if it was on normal; however, I drug another layer set on dodge into the group and it worked fine.
Is this feature just broken on Windows, or does it not work like I thought (where you can drag them in and edit them individually, or edit them all by editing the layer group itself)?
