GIMP :: Phantom Line Around The Edge Of Transparency
Aug 15, 2011
It's just supposed to be a plain black logo, which I've extracted from an image and smoothed/sharpened the edges (they were very rough even before the extraction process). But somehow I've introduced this faint ghost line about 1mm in from the edges of the logo, and I can't get rid of them even if I draw over the entire logo with jet black.
The ghost line becomes most apparent when I anchor the transparency to a white background. Here is zoomed segment of the logo demonstrating the issue:
There is none of this effect on my original full size transparency. It must happen during during the smooth process. Process I used:
- Alpha to selection
- Shrink by a few mm
- invert
- gaussian blur
- colour->curves-> and resharpen smoothed/blurred edges using the 'alpha' graph

Whenever two shapes are stacked directly over top of one another there seems to be a phantom line at the edge of the top shape. At first i thought it was a way to indicate to the user that there are two shapes stack agansit one another. but when I export the graphic as an image, the phantom line is included. This is also the case when using a clipping mask. (image example below)
A few work around that I've used are exporting the file with Art Optimized (Super Sampling) selected in the Anti Aliasing setting. Also, manually creating a sort of ink trap around the bottom shape so that it doesn't reach the edge of the shape above it. Sometimes this becomes a painstaking task when dealing with complicated objects.
As a designer who works with screen printing i'm weary about sending the production file to the printer because of the possibility that they will not understand this glitch/setting and i'll end up with phtanom lines around objects when printed.

I have a phantom line showing up when I plot this particular drawing. When I plot this drawing, do a preview or plot to a pdf, I'm getting a phantom diagonal line going across the drawing. There is no object there in model space or paper space!!! I havn't left on any hidden/locked layers etc. I'm not doing anything I don't normally do with drawings like this. It's just a topographic map of a residence with a surface. I've purged, audited, recovered, even started a new drawing and inserted the componets and nothing fixes this. I feel like throwing my computer out the window and applying at Wal-mart.

Since switching to 2007 our company logo, a png image, plots with a line down the right side the image. It does not show up in plot preview or when plotting to pdf or dwf. I have set image frame to 0 and 2 with no change.

After filling the inside of a line drawing, (cartoon "shape"), I'm left with the checkerboard pattern that indicates transparency. I'd just like to get rid of that checkerboard pattern so I can view my drawing the way it really looks! Can this be done in GIMP?

Using Autocad 2000LT and trying to locate as many 1.5" diameter circles as I can within a 21" diameter circle keeping all the circle .500" apart from any other circle and .500" away from the outer edge. Am using the array function. Trying to bring the first circle up to the line thats .500" in from the 21" outside diameter.
First when I zoom the 1.5" circle looks like a series of lines, not a smooth round circle. First how do I smooth out the appearance of the circle. Second, what commands do I use to move the edge of the circle to just tough the line so that when I measure from the outside dia to the far edge of the small circle I get 2".

Is it possible to do transparency all around the edge of an object. say you had drawn a circle can you make the edge all around transparent or say make just the middle transparent?
I often find that I would love to fade out in more than one direction.

I when i import it in muse...i see also that edge design has a white background ( instead of the transparency that i like to want..)

i used the "magic wand" tool to take out the white backgrounds behind a few polaroid images i'm using on my friend's website and there seems to still be a white line still. it's very thin and almost unnoticeable, but you can see it as you scroll through. check out his site and go to the "life" section and you'll see what i mean on the polaroids as you scroll.
my possible reasons behind this are:
1) somehow the "drop shadow" effect creates the white line?
2) in my code i used borders and on the polaroids i set it to no border, and somehow this make there still be a white box around it?

I have a linked table (linked to an Excel spreadsheet) in my drawing. I would like to set the transparency of the lines in the table in ACA to about 80% - BUT I want the text in the table to stay at 0% transparent. Is there a way to do this? I get the whole table, text and all, at 80% when I try.

Sometimes I make a fresh transparency blank of gimp. Then I import a jpg. I expect the transparency to appear as I erase. Sometimes it erases and there is white; sometimes I erase and it's transparent. ? Isn't it supposed to be transparent?

The edges of this fabric are semi transparent. The grey colour to the area where the arrow points is caused by the photo's original background. Now I'm wondering is it possible to recreate the transparency so that the colours from a new background will show through. I've tried colour to alpha but that makes most of the image transparent.
The rest of the image is mostly black and greys with a splash of red. I would post the entire image but it's copyrighted - DA stock model - so I don't want to break the rules.

How is it possible, to take the brightness of every pixel from the background, and transfer that to the upper layers transparency. (The upper layer is for example all blue). As I said before, I know that this works. I tried everything out and asked Google a lot of times, but I just can´t figure it out.
What I can remember doing there was just take the blue layer and transfer it to another picture. I was wondering because i didn´t do anything special.

My Gimp version……2.6.8.
Until recently Gimp has either supported transparency of .png image files or automatically added an alpha channel to the image. This I don't know. I do a lot of rendering and have always been able to take a .png or convert any image type to a .png, create a path, and delete everything outside of the path and end up with a transparent background.
But something has changed where I must now manually add an alpha channel to a .png image in order to end up with a “transparent background”. what changed in Gimp that I can no longer just erase or delete a selected area of a png resulting in a transparent area?

In each program I have used from Corel Photo-Paint 11, Paint Shop Pro 5 and 7, to Gimp 2.6.11 the end result is exactly the same.
I select the background Invert the selection to pull it out of the original Paste the remaining image with transparent background or make an alpha channel The background needing to be transparent stays transparent.
The moment I save the image as a PNG, close the image, reopen it, check if the Mask/ Alpha channel data remains in tact, and it does, the transparency is completely removed and the background turns to white. This happens on every one of the programs and I am just at my wits end.
There must be something, an order of operations, a color scheme, a presetup step that -everyone- knows but me, that is preventing this from having a transparent background.

I've to select an area ant turn the background transparent. Previously this was simple: select foreground, invert so background selected, toggle the transparency to 0% and hey presto, transparent background. Now when I do that it goes white.
I have tried using transparency - add alpha channel, and nothing happens: the menu stays there. Is that a glitch in y version of Gimp? and how can I now isolate the background and turn int transparent?

Is there any command within Photoshop to tell it to open all windows within the main window (or bring all open windows to the main window)? If you have dual monitors, then often a new window (say the save jpg quality dialog box, or the layers window, etc) will open in the other screen - that is, the screen in which you do not have Photoshop currently open.
This is not too much of a hassle, unless you have disconnected one of the monitors and the window opens up in that phantom monitor. Then you have no way to get to it. I usually resolve this by reconnecting the monitor.
But in this case that hasn't worked. When I choose "Image -> Canvas Size" the window opens somewhere, but I can't find it. I've moved my external monitor into every position possible relative to my primary screen (through Windows display settings) and I can't find the canvas size window anywhere. Code:

I have a situatuion where I have some parts in an assembly that have been set to BOM Structure Phantom, (I didn't use Reference due tho the display issues with Reference parts in the idw. ie, portions not showing as hidden when they should) I need all parts that are set as Phantom to display in a different color in the idw. How I can assign the Phantom parts to a different layer? These are existing parts of the install and need to be displayed differently. Seems like Phantom would work best, if I could control the color of the display in the idw. I cannot do this line by line, since there will be many parts all the time!

I've just recently caught up to 2.8 (From 2.4 something or other believe it or not ) and amongst a couple of things I have to say I don't like is the fact that previously when setting a path, if I wanted it to be either perfectly horizontal or vertical I could see by the steps in the path preview line whether it was or not.
With the new version, initially at least, that's no longer the case. As I tend to work with straight lines a lot of the time it's proving to be a bit of a pain. Is there any way to set the path preview line to show the steps again to indicate a straight line.

making a alpha channel transparency; Funny thing is. I made it work once a few days ago. I went to bed and forgot to write down how i did it (Tried everything, almost)
In the link right here [URL] n i have 4 files; Q3a_arrow_gimp_ver4.tga (TGA that works as i want it, you'll notice ALL the alpha channels have a black layer channel in the channels tab, how do i recreate that?) Q3a_arrow_methodtry.tga (tried to recreate with THIS tutorial [URL] with no success P.S. i tried loooads of tutorials but this recreation seems rather close to the working .TGA i need) Q3a_arrow.ai (sourcematerial all vector from Adobe Illustrator) Q3a_arrow.png (picture with transparency intact if needed for comparison)
So; Now... What i did to make the working picture was making a .PNG - drag it into gimp.. I recall doing some Alpha and or masking or selection thing with it, then rendered it for .TGA since Illustrator does not support the kind of .TGA i needed. Worked flawlessly in the engine where i use a function called alphafunc GE128 (blend with black as invisible layer and white as solid)

I loaded one PNG pic.
I added an alpha channel to make it a transparency.
I used the select by color tool.
I clicked white & removed.
I saved. I switched to eraser - but it is acting like I'm trying to erase something off the transparency layer and won't erase anything.
I have the correct layer selected in the layers window.

I'm sure 'variable transparency' is not the right way of putting this.
I have an image which has some text in white. However because of the aliasing the text is not 100% white against the background (black). Rather; the edges are shades of white.
I want to convert the image so that the text is transparent. If the text was 100% white it would be simple. Colors.. Colors To Alpha. However that doesn't work as it doesn't deal with the shades of white around the edges of the text.
I want the shades of white to be transparent with the same degree of opacity as they white. So the white in the image is 100% transparent and a pixel which is say light grey to be 90% transparent. (The end image is going to be used as a webkit mask; showing the background behind the masked element).
I don't know where to start with this. I know PNGs support 8 bit transparency so it should in theory be possible.

I have a PNG of sprites similar to this:
[URL].........
I want to change the background color to a transparent one. I've tried using Color to Alpha but that makes the sprites themselves partially transparent which is not what I want. My second attempt was to use the fuzzy select tool to select all of the white bits and remove them. This doesn't really work either because on a non white background each of the sprites has a few whitish pixels around it's edge. So what I really want is a combination of the two, i.e. all of the white pixels are made completely transparent, and the whitish pixels on the edge of each sprite are made partially transparent, but the sprites themselves remain opaque.

*) Open the image "Ok.png" - you'll see there's a small green triangle on the right.
*) Mark and delete a bit of the triangle.
*) Save the image (I checked the 3rd (gamma), the 5th (resolution) and the 6th (time) checkbox).
When I now open the saved image in a different viewer (I use the picasa viewer because this viewer shows the transparent areas nicely), the image is still transparent.
*) Delete the rest of the small green triangle on the right.
*) Save the image.
When you now open it in a different viewer, then suddenly the background isn't transparent anymore. (It's then like the 2nd attached pic - Fail.png)
