GIMP :: Image With Layers - How To Cut Out Middle Of Canvas

Mar 16, 2013

I have an image with many layers. I want to cut a vertical strip out of the middle of one of the layers because I want to narrow the transparent gap between the left side of that layer and the right side. That is, my image has stuff on the left side and stuff on the right and a gap in the middle through which shows the pattern in the layers below, and I want to narrow that middle gap. I want to do the same thing as cutting a vertical strip down the middle of that top layer with scissors so I can scrunch the sides together, so less of the patterns on the layers behind shows through.

Is there any way to do this? It doesn't work when I simply select the area I want to cut and click "cut" or "clear" - those commands don't get rid of the canvas in that section, just the contents, which are transparent anyway.

I'm trying to avoid resizing the canvas and then laboriously reconstructing the layer with all the finicky alignment issues, because that seems unnecessarily time-consuming, when all I need to do is remove a gap in a blank section. I tried using guides to guillotine the image, but that, too, is turning out to be time-consuming in terms of reassembling the image. I know I must be missing something obvious - how does one simply remove a selection of the canvas (and not of the image itself) with the selection tool?

GIMP :: Unable To Edit Layers Outside The Canvas

Jun 9, 2013

why are we not able to edit layers outside the canvas?

I often create images were the canvas size is fixed (e.g. display resolution). I then add layers to it that are often larger than the canvas. I would now want to select the superfluous parts of the just added images (e.g. to make them transparent), but I can't select parts of the layers that are not on canvas!

I also can not see any layer content that is off-canvas. A workflow I'd prefer would be copy everything somewhere (not necessarily inside the canvas) and then align it layer by layer, which is hard when one can not see the content of the off-canvas layers.

GIMP :: Canvas Not Refreshing When Layers Shown Or Hidden?

Mar 31, 2013

When hiding or showing a layer the main canvas is not refreshing.

If I hide the layer window then the canvas is refreshed.

So in order to hide a layer I click the eye icon, click in the canvas panel, hit Tab to refresh the canvas, and tab again to shop the layer window again.

I'm pretty sure this is not by design but I'm not sure whether there's a setting I've accidentally activated, or if it's a bug in Gimp or if it's a problem with the graphics set up on my machine (not having any other problems).

I'm using Gimp v 2.8.4 On fedora 17/Gnome 3

I've tried purging gimp from my system and reinstalling with out success!

GIMP :: Closed In Middle Of Saving Image - XCF Is Corrupt

This is the third or fourth time it's done this to me. I'd include the file but this is the first time I've posted here and I don't know how

Photoshop :: Decrease Canvas Size By Removing The Middle?

Feb 28, 2009

Is it possible to reduce canvas size by removing a set width or height to be removed from the center of the image? Here is an example situation. I have a graphic that I use for rounded corner effects in a website. For border and shading reasons, I am using images that span the whole width of the element, not using individual corner images. So, my image would look something like this:

:.__________.: (bottom.gif, let's call it)

I've had to create a number of these images in varying widths, based on whatever element it is to accent. What I'd like to do is have my base PSD image be, say, 1000 pixels wide, and when I need to create a graphic that is 200px wide, I would just remove 800px of width from canvas, but from the center, and have the sides collapse in together.

GIMP :: How To Fit Canvas To Image

Feb 6, 2013

basically what I did was I wanted a certain part of an image and I used the eraser tool along with adding the alpha channel so I can get rid of everything in the image but a cropped version of it (basically erasing around what I want to keep). How do I fit the canvas to this oddly shaped image now?

You can say I want to create an icon but when I save it as a .png or .jpg, I get this white background replacing the alpha channel when I just want the cropped image itself. I tried going about using the free select tool, going around the image and then using the "Fit Canvas to Selection" option but that just takes way too long.

GIMP :: Pasting Image Larger Than Canvas?

Jan 9, 2013

In GIMP 2.8, when I copy a large image and paste it into a small canvas, the edges of the image exceeding the canvas are lost.

In Paint.Net 3.5, when you paste a large image into a small canvas, a dialog box displays

The image being pasted is larger than the canvas size. What do you want to do?

1) Expand Canvas to fit the image being pasted.

2) Keep canvas size.

3) Cancel Paste

This would be a great default feature for GIMP.

GIMP :: Resizing Image Resizes Canvas?

Oct 2, 2011

I have a canvas and it's 2048x2048 the image is 2041x2041 but there's this ugly gap on the sides and if I use the zealous crop tool it changes the canvas to 2041x2041. This aint what I want.

I want the image to be 2048 with the canvas so, I do image resize, thinkin oh this will work.

but nah, if I image resize it changes the whole canvas, I just want the image to change, and besides that if the canvas is 2048 the image resize tool will say the Image is 2048 even though the image it's self is 2041. So I guess what I'm sayin is there's a bug or something which makes the image resize tool resize the canvas instead.

So how would I go about resizing my image to fit the 2048 canvas?

Photoshop :: Canvas Size Will Constrain Image Rather Than Cropping Canvas

Feb 23, 2012

I just got CS5.1 at my job. This must be a preference, but when I adjust the Canvas size, it will constrain the image, rather than cropping the canvas. The Anchor in the Canvas Size menu appears outlined (highlighted?) which indicates that this is something in preferences that I can adjust.

Revit :: Walls With Core Faces In The Middle Of Layers

Sep 23, 2013

Is it possible to design a wall where the core boundary lines fall in the middle of a wall layer?

Case in point is a complex wall with an 8" foundation wall that follows a building line along its exterior face.  Above that is 3'-6" of stone veneer/airspace/sheathing/6" stud/drywall.  Above that is EIFS/sheathing/6" stud/drywall.

The design calls for an insulation gap between the slab and the foundation and for the top of the wall to be 6" above the first floor level.  The 6" metal stud thus overhangs the top of the foundation wall by 1" on the interior side.

Ideally the floor would be flush and core would simply follow the studs but the building lines (controlled by the grid) control the placement of the foundation wall and no part of the upper wall lines up with the foundation wall.  Even worse the exterior finish falls 1/2" inside the exterior of the wall below and there should be no line drawn there.

GIMP :: Making Image Into Layers?

Mar 12, 2013

I'm having some issues using either GIMP or PS to do this, so I figured I'd ask here. when it comes to image editing and tasks like this, but I'm currently being asked to do something for a job.

I need to take a single image which is a restaurant floor layout, then make it so all of the tables on the image are a different layer so that they can be moved around/customized accordingly.

As far as I can tell, this would involve creating layers, copying the tables from the main image, pasting them all on top as their own layer, and then sliding them around from there.

Is there any easy way to do this, or am I completely off-base?

GIMP :: How To Separate Layers In Image

Jun 4, 2012

I have some very old GB postage stamps which can be identified by their plate numbers. The plate number, which is engraved in the design of the stamp, has an effect on the stamp's value. Unfortunately on a number of stamps the cancellation mark obliterates the plate number. I would like to be able, in a digital image, to lift the image of the cancellation mark to reveal the design underneath.

I have tried using Adobe and Corel imaging software without luck.

GIMP :: How To Drag Layers From One Image To Another In 2.8 (2013)

Dec 7, 2013

I'm using Gimp 2.8.2 on Linux. I've configured the UI to single-windowmode and have opened multiple images, each with a tabbed display.

It is my understanding that I should be able to grab a layer from oneimage and drag-and-drop it onto the tab of another image in order toappend a copy of that layer in the new image. I have not been able to dothis. I'm grabbing a layer from the layers dialog and dragging it to the tab-thumbnail, but the layer is not copied to the new image.

A couple of comments for the UI designers:

* I find the [X] icons on the image tabs to be a real problem getting accidentally selected and dismissing the image when attempting to quickly select another tab. I would prefer another tab dismissal method such as right-click-menu close.

* Some user control over the tabs would be good. For example, I would like to see the the vertical height of of the tabs be smaller and have the option of displaying file names and/or icons.

GIMP :: Layers Hiding The Copied Image

Nov 23, 2011

I have an image that I resized and that resulted in a gray checker board pattern above and below the original photo. I tried to add another photos above by copying and pasting it but get nothing I can see.

I tried merging visible layers but that did nothing (obviously since the copied photo is not visible).

Specifically I open the second photo, Select > All, Edit > Copy, went to the first image Edit > Paste resulting in a outline box of about the right size but without anything in it. I dragged this to the place I wanted it but I cannot get it to become visible. When I anchored the layer the outline box went away.

I have two layers but the second layer appears to be exactly like the first one.

I have not changed the size nor made anything transparent.

GIMP :: Aligning Layers - Part Of Image Disappears

Jun 25, 2013

I'm a Gimp newbie, using 2.8.4. I have a png image that's 530 pixels wide. I'm trying to merge it with a white background layer that is 960 pixels wide. I need to align the image to the right side of the background layer. This is what I did:

- opened my image
- created background layer (960 px wide)
- made background layer the bottom layer
- clicked on Alignment tool
- clicked the hand cursor on the image (530 px wide)
- made the background layer the active layer
- set "Relative to:" Active layer
- clicked on the right alignment arrow

The image did move to where I wanted it, but most of the image from the right edge disappeared, so all I've got is a small portion of the left side of the image in the middle of my background layer. Then I did the following:

- merged visible layers with Expand as necessary

That action merged the layers, but all I have is a small part of my image near the center of the background.
