AutoDesk Smoke :: 2012 Sp4 Backburner Fails To Launch
Sep 16, 2013
Static network, static IP address on fixed machine. Stable install been used every day for over 2 years. Come in this morning and backburner server fails to launch. Network functional as usual, checked all the usual culprits and no joy. Reinstalling SP4 now to see if that repairs links.
if you download and install with only WI-FI on. you get one MAC adress... then if you connect your macbookpro with a Thunderbolt->Ethernet adapter, you want this to be first in the list for fastest connection. Then Smoke will not export (backburner fails)
If you remove the adapter so that Wi-fi is the only one. Well then everything works...
I have been running PR5 for a while and everything has been stable. Today Smoke locked up and I had to force quit. After the force quit I have been unable to start Backburner. If I try to export I get this message:
Cannot connect to Backburner Manager. localhost:Backburner: Connection Refused.
If I open Smoke Prefs and try to toggle the Backburner Manager box I get the following:
Backburner Configuration: Unable to switch to localhost. Connection Refused
I have tried re-starting Backburner in the Service Monitor and each time it will turn green for 10-20 seconds and then turn red. I have also double checked that the Manager Hostname in Smoke Setup is set to localhost. I have checked my Network settings and only Airport is active, using DHCP and IPv6 is set to off. I have uninstalled PR5 and installed PR6 but still have had no luck.
Oddly if I type sudo nano/usr/discreet/backburner/Network/backburner.xml into terminal I get "command not found". Similarly if I type ping hostname I get "cannot resolve hostname: Unknown Host"
I just imported a bunch of 4k clips via the gateway using the backburner. Is it normal that it took about 2 minutes per frame to render? I had 36 clips, 53 000 frames in total, and it took about 8 hours to get them all in (with store local copy and proxies turned on).

I started a new project and for some reason I can no longer send footage to backburner to crate proxies.
After dragging my AVC-Intra clips onto the folder in media hub I get a quick message in the bottom left corner that basically says that smoke cannot connect to backburner on port 0.
I can ping localhost and also backburner via the terminal with no issues, its just that Smoke cannot "see it". No jobs show up in the backburner manager.

I'm trying to see why one of my test machines won't export (never shows any submitted jobs under the jobs tab.) Through several other posts, oftentimes the user is asked to check the back burner web page. (localhost/backburner.) I must be doing something wrong, but I'm unable to access anything this way. I've tried all possible names for my localhost. ie. comp name, ip address, etc. I just get a 404 not found error.
Every time I try to connect to adobe.com I always arrive on the Autodesk Tool with Backburner and WiretapCentral page.
I can used each browser I own it still the same. I try to flush cookies everywhere and it's the same.
It looks like the page adobe.com (YES) is redirect to a local page from Autodesk.(only [URL])
I try to do the same in an other user account on my mac, and it is the same.
So I look in the activity monitor to locate if an Autodesk thing is on. I isolate BackburnerManager and BackburnerServer, on. (Smoke is off)I tried to hard quit them but I couldn't
I am trying to enter use the URL... and I am prompted by an Password Protection.
1.) crosshair 2.) clear swipe areas 3.) Desktop Tools (like the Idea where you placed the "hacked" ones) 4.) beiing able to kill the tabs at the bottom and the apple bar at the top 5.) TRIM MODE like AVID (no ones really knows how handy this thing is when you have 16or more audio tracks at a feature film) 6.) Give us a snapshot of an image that we can grade a little bit better. (or show me where it is ;-)) 7.) Easy subtitle option (STL Import or whatever - change all the 700 Titles in one go... 8.) The ability to conform to PARTIAL FileNames (would make relinking of fals imported D5 Material from Meda Composer wayyyy easier - since AVID keeps the names but adds a zillion of useless characters at the end) 8.a) straight forward force relink option. 9.) simple blur functions in text editor 10.) direct output for H.264 for blu ray that we can use directly in Encore (or do we have that?)
Today I was messing around with import. Tried to pull in 100GB of footage and found it took nearly 1hr 45 mins over USB3. I know the slow speed was down to the rubbish hard drive I was pulling from but it would have been really useful to know that it was going to take 1hr 45mins. I could've gone to the pub!
We get a time estimate on backburner importing? I also wanted to check that smac 2013 isn't throttled anywhere on import speeds? I know that smoke all the way up to 2010 vsn was throttled so that you would never get import as fast as your disks could go.
All the footage is available, but backburner starts rendering and the stops just before 100%. So I have a bunch of clips on idle, and there are most of the time only 2 frames missing.... why is that? Can I consider the job done and delete it out of the backburner?

After doing these caches, my system goes into a weird cycle where the mouse pointer goes invisible for 2-3 seconds, about every 15 seconds or so. Both within Smoke, and even in the Mac OS - the only thing that fixes it is a system reboot. Big PITA when cache-ing from lots of different sources drives, so lots of cache-batches.
How to be able to EJECT a drive from Smoke without quitting the app, and even then, I still have to FORCE EJECT more often than not. I've quit and restarted this project dozens of times to change out source media USB3 drives. Wasn't so bad when you could daisy chain FW drives, but I can only connect one USB3 drive at a time on my 2011 MacPro. --- SmokeUser since 2012 MacPro w/ K3 32 GB RAM CalDigit HdPro2 RAID
I'm on PR5 and up until today backburner has been working fine. For some reason its stopped. here is the error message from the file I'm trying export:
tddetedit2 2687747392 transcoderMediaProvider.C:312 11/08/12:13:57:26.290 Cannot get type of clip IFFFS-20:/stonefs/YEC_2012/workspace/_Export_121108_133458_1/H_16777343_S_1352399698_U_44950/hires: Library _Export_121108_133458_1 not found
Backburner doesn't seem to work properly for me in the release version. I cannot export file sequences as backburner sticks on waiting. I can however export Quicktimes fine.
After archiving out of 2012 SP3 and then un-unarchiving into 2012 SAP2 SP3, could i edit clips (with history)? For example, action-rendered clips, flame fx-rendered clips, etc.

having problems when generating managed media through the Mediahub from H264 into Apple ProRess 4:2:2 (HQ).
I tried different options but that happens that it never finishes rendering the files, and the Jobs tab shows the system updates the files randomly with a "busy" status while all of the others show "waiting". However nothing happens.
I entered the managed folder from the Store and have nothing but a couple of 1 frame clips.
I know we are a little behind the times, but when upgrading to Ex1, will all of the existing projects still be usable? Or do we need to "Wipe 'em All"?
I'm looking to import a model with materials. Is 3DS the only file format that will carry this along? That would suck for me cause my animator does not use Autodesk software. I have an obj with the material jpegs but can't seem to find find the proper wrap mode that makes it all come together. Maybe FBX is a better option.

Any time the gateway scans a directory, which has a clip that has stereo audio, Smoke hangs. Is this a bug? Specifically the file was a Canon 7D file which had audio recorded with it. The crash does not happen when we try a file without audio or a file whose audio has been converted to mono. The file was directly from the camera. Same thing happens when it is a Prores HQ file with Stereo audio.
I have recently upgraded to Smoke 2012 sp2 and have a small issue regarding the reordering of my clips in the source area.
On 2011 when you placed clips in the source area in a specific order and saved it to the library and when you recalled it from the library it would put the clips back in exactly the same place you left them. Now in 2012 when you do that it re-orders them in some sort of chronological order.
Is there a setting that I'm not aware of that will stop doing that as I place them in a specific structure which makes sense to me and is easy to find and understand on large builds, now I'm having to sift through the clips and waste time finding what I did last and checking through versions to find the latest one.
I just installed my Smoke2013 SP2 yesterday, and today I want to restore my project. From Mr. Grant Kay tutorial, I saw there's restore button once he double click the restore folder. But I can't see that Restore button.
I have a clip that play perfectly fine in my timeline. When I export it, either as a Quicktime or image sequence, the playback stutters every few seconds; basically it double prints a frame every few seconds or something. It's extremely annoying and preventing me from a client delivery in the morning.
I'm attempting to get Smoke 2012 SP1 running on Mac OS X 10.7.2. After installation, I cannot get the application to launch -- instead I get a "DlVideo Error: No video list" error and then exit.
Hardware specs are attached, in short 2 x 6 core Mac Pro, 24GB RAM, Quadro FX 4800 and Kona 3G. This is built on a clean install of 10.7.2 using the Apple video driver for the 4800. The display is an Eizo ColorEdge CG303W, attached to the 4800.
I would like to install the 4.1.28 CUDA drivers to enable the Mercury playback engine (as this machine will probably also run Premiere Pro), however I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible until I can get Smoke running.
A Euphonix MC Transport and MC Color will be added to the station, however they are not currently attached.
My workstation name is bc118-s001. I'm using an external license server (macnv3), which is running properly.
Storage is currently set to the local disk, which I know is sub-optimal. Ultimately the storage volume will be a fiber-attached TerraBlock 24D, however I'm upgrading that device from 4.6.4 to 5 before I put the unit into production, and would rather not store any data on it before the upgrade.
I've attached the application and shell logs for your reference. The following lines are only the errors from the app.log:

I notice that the monitor refresh rate is not being detected properly, however the OS seems to detect it properly.
