AutoCAD Inventor :: Sketch To Create A Break Out View In One Type Of Drawing
Sep 9, 2013
I use the same sketch to create a break out view in one type of drawing. I may be blind, but I can't seem to find a way to save that sketch and reuse it when I want to create a break out view.

is there any way using iLogic or other method to automatically control the size of the 'break' in a drawing view? I have built a model which uses iLogic to control virtually everything, however the large variations in the length of the product mean that there are some interesting results when it comes to the broken drawing views updating.
it would be nice to locate the break at the absolute center of the view and then size it as a percentage of the view size along one axis or perhaps according to some other length based rule.

Using Inv 2013 and VB 2010. I am trying to reference a sketch within a drawing view, but I am having a hard time figuring out which view number and sketch number to use. I thought I had it figured out, but apparently I was wrong.
For example, see the 2 attached pics, Drawing A and Drawing B. For Drawing A I had the sketch reference set as
Dim oSheet1_View As DrawingView = oDrawDoc.Sheets(1).DrawingViews(3) Dim oSketch As DrawingSketch oSketch = oSheet1_View.Sketches.Item(1)
Drawing View 3, as it was the 3rd Drawing View in the list, and Sketch #1 within that Drawing View. I thought this was how it worked, because it worked with my code and it hid the sketch. However, moving on to Drawing B, I used the same code, and it does not reference that sketch at all. It did nothing to it. Even though the Flange_Holes sketch is in the same position. 3rd View down the list, 1st sketch.
So how does Inventor reference these views and sketches? Is it in order of creation? Is there a way to reference it by the what the sketch is named instead of trying to decipher the number it's assigned? I have a lot of drawings already made, and I'm not positive the views were taken and created in the same exact order each time.

I can "Get Model Sketch" to make it appear visible in a drawing view. But I can find no way to use these "edges" or "lines" or "entities" or whatever they are, later in a drawing view sketch. No way to project them from Model Sketch to Drawing View sketch. I can attach leaders and dimensions to these Model Sketch entitites but I can find no way to use them in a sketch owned by the drawing view. Am I missing something?

I have a VB program that auto updates the size of a door and frame assembly, and in turn, updates the shop drawings to reflect this change. I have a view on my shop drawing that I have drawn a sketch in. I start the sketch, add my dimensions, and I use 'Project Geometry' to project the edges of the actual part around the sketch to constrain my sketch and keep it in place. The problem is, as the program runs, and the door/frame changes height, the sketch loses it's dimensional references to the projected geometry. When I go back and reopen the drawing after running the program, all the dimensions that went to the projected geometry are gone.
Is there another way to anchor a sketch to a drawing view part instead of dimensioning to projected geometries? This doesn't seem to be working, and I've tried it every which way I can think of. Oddly enough, I have another sketch in a different view that is set up the same way, and it never misses a beat.

Any time I click on "Create 2D sketch" when editing a part in place in an assembly, the view moves to an isometric view. It happens as soon as I click on the button. Is there any way to stop this happening?
This does not happen when I'm editing a part (.ipt) on its own. I'm aware of the "Look at sketch plane on sketch creation" issue: this is not the same thing since it happens as soon as I click on the button, i.e. before I actually create the sketch.
I want the view to remain as it was before I click the button, to keep the things I'm looking at in view.

I'd like to add a sketch to my drawing - a sketch that is independent of any other views. Is it possible to make this sketch have a scale associated with it instead of being 1:1?
Right now I am just overriding all of my dimensions.

I started with a Left side view of a part and created a sectioned view right down the middle so you can see the insides from another view. the part is pretty big so i used a Break to shorten it to fit the page. I also placed a smaller and separate isometric view of the same part and want this view to inherit the same break. How can I do this? If I go into the display options of the iso view, all the cut inheritance options are grayed out and can't be clicked. I've seen this done before, but i'm sure i missed a step somewhere.

I have made an exploded view and placed it an a drawing. I would like to view inside one of the bodies to show where the exploded internals sit, however when I do a break out of the body the trail lines from the exploded internals also get sectioned. Is there a way to control the sectional properties of a trail line?

Is there anyway to break a sketched pattern without deleting all the elements? CATIA has this feature where you can pattern something, then break the relationship of this pattern so you can edit the components as individuals. It seems the only option in Inventor is to delete the pattern or suppress individual components. I just want to pattern a line equally spaced 20 times then trim those lines to a bisecting one. Its annoying to have to draw and constrain all the lines to create a pattern

How do I duplicate the 2D line work from a part level sketch into a drawing level (overlay) sketch?
I started a simple 2D piping system diagram sketch by opening a new part file and using a sketch to stick draw the system schematic including some annotations. Then I opened a new drawing file and made a base view of the part file to bring a view of the original sketch into the drawing.
I realize now that it would have been much easier to have created the schematic directly in a 2D sketch at the drawing level, which would have made editing the annotations much easier at the drawing level, and there is really no need for the part file to exist. I have no intention of creating a 3D model or "real" part in the .ipt file, was just using it as a jumping off point to sketch.
I was thinking that I could correct my error in judgment by just copying the sketch and pasting it into a new sketch on the drawing, but it doesn't want to work that way. I have tried copying both the whole sketch at the browser level, and the entire sketch contents (all of the lines and annotations) from the opened part sketch, but when I attempt to paste either of those into the drawing, paste does not seem to be an option. I'd rather not have to draw the whole thing again, as in typical fashion, my once simple sketch has grown in proportion and complexity from its simple beginning.

is there any way to control which areas of my part or assembly that I want to use the View Break on? Currently I'm not aware of any options. It wants to break through the entire assembly or part view.
Basically I have a coworker who designs his electrical harnesses in Inventor. Some of the wiring branches off the main harness are longer than others and he would like to break only that specific branch of wiring, not the entire horizontal or vertical area of the view.

I have a part that when I adjust its length additional fabs are needed. Now in my idw for this part I want to secure the break lines on the part at a exact distance from the end / each other to display these fabs. Is there a way to parameterize or set the break lines so they adapt to the change in length and move accordingly?

I have a parametric assembly and some of the parts in this assembly require a "Break". When the part dramatically reduces in size the part view disappears as the part is now located in the "Break". Delete the "Break", re apply the "Break".
I would like to be able to constrain a Break to the part, either a sketch on the view or maybe from Workplanes in the part.

I have a view of an assembly where I used a break out to break through a part. I want to make a section of this, and have that view respect that the part was broken and show it as broken in the new view.
The section view shows the full part 100% unbroken. In the edit view, the only option for cut inheritance is "break". All others are greyed out.
Why I want to do this: I am unable to break it in the section view because there is no option to break through a single part a specified distance. I cannot break an area "from point" or "to sketch" because they don't let you choose a single part for the effect, and the parts completely included in the break out this way are not going to show up in the parts list, so you cannot adjust their section participation, therefore I also cannot just break an area and then choose what parts don't get the effect.

When creating a break out view on a top level assembly that includes frame generator components, the break out function does not break these parts out. I know it is working because the non-frame generator parts are disappearing and being broken out as you would expect but the frame generated parts seem to be immune to the command. is this a common fault or something wrong with my particular model?

I'd like to be able to create break-out views, somewhat like in the picture below.
Is this possible directly in Inventor? That is, without having to carve out elaborate geometry in the parts and assign red color to the jagged edges.
I can achieve some of what I want in a drawing (Break-out in a view, then making an isometric projected view from that first view with the break-out), but it's still not exactly what I want.

does Inventor offers any option to break geometry lines in drawing behind the text (e.g. notes and dimensions)? I tried this in IV 2009 as well as in IV 2011, but the result is the same in both version, shown on first image. The text is sometimes difficult to read when it is crossed with geometry lines.

I need an urgent solution to my issue.I have created section view from a sketch (a line constrained to the projection of a work plane) from my derived part to my drawing using the "Get model sketches ". When i update the iassembly and update the the view using model state the view tries to update but throws an error see attached document. When i delete the section line and create a section line manually ie. by creating a normal sketch in the drawing the same model gets updated without any error.
