How would you show a intersection line showing the intersection of a surface and a level plane or level surface?

I am trying to constrain a point on a sketch to the intersection of an axis with my sketch plane... and I'm having some trouble. I can't select the axis when I select the "Project Cut Edges" and the "Project Geometry" is of no use because the axis is not normal to my sketch plane.
I'm trying to cut holes normal to my sketch plane on a curved surface using points projected from an overhead sketch.
Any program to convert 3D solids to a mid plane surfaces? We need our models in this form to do FEA work on them. I wanted to ask this question before I took on the task of trying to create one myself.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm designing a part, and am having trouble creating a plane tangent to a curved surface. One option for creating a plane says "Tangent to Surface through Point", which in theory I should be able to use, but I can't figure out how to actually place a point there before in order to create a surface at the point.
Basically I am trying to cut a circle into the curved right side of the part
I've attached the part file for reference.
When I tried to make a sketch plane on one of the surfaces of the revolved feature, it only had the option to edit the original sketch or the feature even though the sketch that I'm trying to create is on a different plane. There is one surface that allows me to add a sketch plane.

I'd like to use the bend modifier to transform a square plane into a sphere with a diameter equal to the side length of the original plane (to reproduce the approach for UV mapping a sphere described here).
I've been able to bend a vertical, square plane into something very close to a sphere using two bend modifiers (the first bending the x axis by 180 degrees with a direction of 0 degrees and the second bending the y axis by 360 degrees with a direction of 90 degrees). It's necessary to move the center of the second bend modifier to obtain a sphere.
However, there are two problems with the result: the diameter of the sphere is not equal to the side length of the initial plane and it's difficult to position the center of the second bend modifier such that the sphere doesn't have holes at its poles.
The first problem occurs because (as far as I can tell) the bend modifier assigns its gizmo an initial scaling such that the object to which the bend modifier is being applyed is bent but not stretched. This is reasonable default behaviour and applying an FFD 2x2x2 modifier after the first bend modifier allows the (now bent) plane to be scaled such that the height of the sphere that ultimately results equals the side length of the initial plane. However, when the second bend modifier is applied, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to precisely position its center such that the sphere's width equals its height (the next step would be to weld the vertices at the two poles). This is also the cause of the second problem since positioning the bend modifier's center correctly would also remove the holes at the poles.I've attached a max file (in a zip file) for reference (also see the left-to-right sequence in the image below):
- Plane001 is the initial square plane
- Plane002 is after the first bend modifier has been applied
- Plane003 is after adjustments have been made with the FFD modifier
- Plane004 is after the second bend modifier has been applied
- Plane005 is after the center of the second bend modifier has been adjusted.

I want to project a text on a sketch onto a conical surface. The error message is that the chosen surface wasn't tangential to the profile plane. I found no way to rotate the plane.
How do I project my profile onto the conical surface or How do I make the profile plane tangential to the conical surface?
I'm working on a complex closed object shape originally made from a plane and want to do Boolean to it.
So when a plane get Boolean-ed with a sphere, it just turns to plane with a hole. Different when a standard box get Boolean-ed with a sphere, it turns into a box with a 1/2 sphere hole.
My question is, is it possible to turns a plane into solid 3D objects like box, sphere,etc..? So it's able to get Boolean-ed correctly?
I add a picture of simpler analogy
p.s. the box and the box-ed plane is an editable poly
I want to draw a line from the center of this sphere to where the sphere and TIN interesct

I figured out a work around if the surface is flat, but I haven't figured out a work around for a curved surface.
How do I create work axis where work plane intersects curved surface?
Or put another way: How do I project intersection of work plane and curved surface onto the work plane in a 2D sketch?
I need to be able to draw a 2D sketch on the work plane, but get a perfectly matching projected line onto the work plane, from the curved surface, at the intersection of the curved surface and the work plane.
The attached jpg shows the intersection in question. I circled it.
I have a link starting from P1.Is there a way to check if the link is intersecting EG or not?

My corridor surface randomly bounces from top links to bottom links through the intersections even though I specified top links only and my corridor is modelling correctly.
Previously I just deleted the surface and recreated it with no errors but it doesn't seem to work now. This happens with both manually created intersections and ones created with the intersection tool.
I have 2 roads crossing, and I have created the 2 corridors, and an intersection object created. I split the 2 corridor regions and put the intersection in, and then closed back in the regions to the start of the intersection object (region). Now - how do I make that all one corridor object that reacts to either of my profiles, and is only one corridor surface? - the corridor surface ignores my region boundaries Or at least 3 objects that interact with each other properly. Image 1 highlights the start/end of the corridor regions, and image 2 shows how the surfaces look - why doesn't the corridor surface start and end where the regions do?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use AutoCAD to render some small parts. I am used to using Inventor Studio, but AutoCad's rendering tools have taken some getting used. to. I have everything figured out, with the exception of the ground plane for shadows and/or reflections.
I originally wanted a ground plane for a shadow to be projected on. However, I had no luck with that, so I modeled a large box under the part. Using that, I am able to get a shadow, or reflection, BUT, the edges of the box are showing in the background. The easy fix is to make the box larger, however, I need the reflective surface and background to be white so that it can be printed on paper without seeing the rendered edges.
How can I set a ground plane, or model a plane, for shadows or reflections, AND made it true white so that the edges cannot be seen?
What distinction is between “intersection” and “apparent intersection” in snaps,. I’m not sure what difference is between the “intersection” and “apparent intersection” in snaps.

I am trying to create an intersection design using the Intersection Tools in C3D 2012. I followed the steps in the tutorials, created a corridor on the major road, splitted the regions, created the intersection and added it to the major road corridor, and connect the regions with the intersection portion.
I used the same assembly throughout the design just for simplicity, however, i notice that there are gaps of curb between the curb return section and the through section (as outline in red rectangles).
I am trying to create a mass surface that is being cut by a topo plane. What I am trying to achieve or show is a height setback set from the existing topo to a height of 35'. I've tried to cutting or joining the two geometries but this will not work. There is no way to snap t the intersection of were the mass and the Topo surface meet. Is there a way to change a Topo surface into a mass? Any other way to achive this instead of massing and topo surfaces?

Instead of wrapping to the sphere, however, the image is mirrored on both sides of the sphere and extremely distorted. I knew wrapping 2D geometry to a sphere was not strictly possible, but is there no way to pull it off with an image?
If not, would something like this be possible in 3DS max?

I'm trying to project an inset of the border onto the curved surface and use the shell command to create a hollow funnel with an overhanging lip. I have projected the inset successfully, but cannot select the resulting smaller face, just the whole original face.
A similar problem that I tried while attempting to figure this out was shelling a sphere. 2d sketch -> 3d sketch project onto surface, and try applying shell to the resulting "face". However I can only select the whole face when trying to shell.
