Revit :: Create Mass Surface That Is Being Cut By Topo Plane
Nov 16, 2011
I am trying to create a mass surface that is being cut by a topo plane. What I am trying to achieve or show is a height setback set from the existing topo to a height of 35'. I've tried to cutting or joining the two geometries but this will not work. There is no way to snap t the intersection of were the mass and the Topo surface meet. Is there a way to change a Topo surface into a mass? Any other way to achive this instead of massing and topo surfaces?

I received from our client a dwg file. i follow the steps in creating a topo surface file from a dwg within revit. However, revt include also the zero Z-elevation points within the file. And so it igave me a very weird result of the toposurface.
Know any good procedure in preparing a dwg file before importing/linking to revit or rather excluding all zero Z-elevation points.

For some reason I cannot generate a topo surface using the attached autocad file.
The levels are on a layer called LEVELS. The points next to the levels are on layer "0".
Some of the levels are negative ... ie: below sea level.
No topo surface gets generated and no error message appears.

I am wondering why my site will not render the grass on my topo surface? (it just renders grey...)I have checked my materials, view/element properties, and visibility/graphics.

I am trying to create a localized existing surface from a very large topo. I promoted the existing surface shortcut into my drawing, then created a cropped surface to be put in a new drawing. After creating the cropped surface the new file shows that a surface has been created, however, the surface contains no data. I am using c3d 2012.

How to create a work plane that is perpendicular to a surface? I'm trying to do this so that I can "split" the object into two separate entities where the plane is.

I am trying to create a sloped wall by creating a mass in-place. First I draw a line on a surface at a pre-determined level that I've set up in elevation. Then I offset this line in the vertical plane. My next step is to offset this second line so that it is not directly above the original line, but offset in the horizontal plane. How do I change from a vertical to a horizontal offset? I’ve tried different work planes, but they all offset vertically.

I need to create a sloped roof. I want to base this roof upon a beam system created using a sloped work plane rather than offset from a level. I now understand that (for some reason) Revit will not create floors or roofs using work planes, but only on levels, and I know that I can create a flat roof on a level and apply slope arrows and adjust the offset height, etc. etc. but that is very imprecise (lots of micro adjustments) and a lot of steps.
Isn't there any way to create a floor or roof using a work plane as the level?
The attached image shows a roof I created "by face" from a box mass element I set on the plane - unfortunately now I cannot edit the outline to get it to fint my non-rectangular roof.

I keep running into a situation where I would like to be able to create an edge or a work axis at the intersection of a work plane and the surface of the part. I figured out a work around if the surface is flat, but I haven't figured out a work around for a curved surface.
How do I create work axis where work plane intersects curved surface?
Or put another way: How do I project intersection of work plane and curved surface onto the work plane in a 2D sketch?
I need to be able to draw a 2D sketch on the work plane, but get a perfectly matching projected line onto the work plane, from the curved surface, at the intersection of the curved surface and the work plane.
The attached jpg shows the intersection in question. I circled it.

When I select all of my building pads and topo and move them vertically up or down by the SAME amount, the cut and fill volumes change. Apparently the cut/fill is being calculated relative to something that is NOT THE GRADED SURFACE. Maybe the Level line? I don't know. The volumes shouldn't change at all when I move both the topo and pads together! How can I trust these numbers?

I'm using Revit 2012.
know of a way to modify both Contour Lines (Topo) and the actual building in the same file?
i.e. without linking the file "topo" to the file "building"?

I'm designing a part, and am having trouble creating a plane tangent to a curved surface. One option for creating a plane says "Tangent to Surface through Point", which in theory I should be able to use, but I can't figure out how to actually place a point there before in order to create a surface at the point.
Basically I am trying to cut a circle into the curved right side of the part
I've attached the part file for reference.

Is there any method to create sweep or shaped object in mass (should be in dimension) using Revit 2012.
The creation of sweep/revolve/blend is not available in Mass of Revit 2012.
Because the method of mass is difference comparing to Revit 2008 with Revit 2012.

I am trying to use AutoCAD to render some small parts. I am used to using Inventor Studio, but AutoCad's rendering tools have taken some getting used. to. I have everything figured out, with the exception of the ground plane for shadows and/or reflections.
I originally wanted a ground plane for a shadow to be projected on. However, I had no luck with that, so I modeled a large box under the part. Using that, I am able to get a shadow, or reflection, BUT, the edges of the box are showing in the background. The easy fix is to make the box larger, however, I need the reflective surface and background to be white so that it can be printed on paper without seeing the rendered edges.
How can I set a ground plane, or model a plane, for shadows or reflections, AND made it true white so that the edges cannot be seen?

Is there a method to add a work plane to a curved surface ? I need a construction plane adding to a curved surface to allow a sketch to to added to this plane, not sure if this is possible but the problem I have is adding a series of sketches to a curved surface to then extrude-cut for window openings.

I have a relatively simple mass modeled in Rhino that I imported to a Revit Mass Family (via .sat file). I then placed walls, roofs, structure on the face of this mass. However I would like to be able adjust this mass, either in Rhino or Revit and the walls and structure adjust accordingly. Now however, if I reload the mass into my Revit family, and then reload the family to my model, and then attempt to Update to Face, the error "Faces defining this Element cannot be reacquired." and my only option is to delete the offending wall/roof etc.
Is this just a limitation in Revit/Rhino, or am I totally doing it wrong?

I'm following a "Simple Mass Creation" exercise in a Revit book, which says to create a cube, a sphere, and a pyramid. It doesn't say how, though, it just goes on to the next step of dividing the masses into floors. After much research and trial and error, I figured out the cube and sphere, but how the heck do you create a pyramid? At first I was thinking of a blend, from a square to a point, but that's not an option. Then I tried to use void shapes to remove parts of a cube...and I'm getting an error message because my voids are overlapping and there's no solid to cut. There MUST be a faster and less complicated way to create such a basic form.

I have a colleague who has counciled me that sometimes it makes sense to create mass-elements for complicated gabled roof elements. Since I am pretty darn new to Revit, I am bringing in some old 2D dwg information (plans and elevations) and I'm trying to use this information to generate an in-place mass that is my roof. I'm essentially extruding gabled roof information from this geometry. So far so good. But when I try to rotate this information I find the program unwilling to do this. I have a suspicion this has something to do with the fact this in-place mass is either being hosted by the intitial horiontal working plane, or it is "pinned" to something I don't want it to be pinned to.

Is there any way to change the appearance of a mass imported into Revit? I simply want to change the dark grey that shows in the rendered view and/or the white that shows up in the shaded view so I can control how background buildings (imported through google earth/sketch up) look in my drawings.
I do not want to rebuild the masses with walls, ceilings, etc, because they are just background site elements. I have tried to do this through object styles. I have tried to do this through "Override by Element" and "Override by Category". I am importing the files as in-place masses and there is no way to edit materials because "Materials" doesn't even show up as one of the element properties.
