AutoCAD 2010 :: Create A Reference Axis?
Jul 10, 2013
I wanted to create a reference axis, which should look like the one in the following picture (B):
how I can create such an reference axis? Is there a tool for it or is it usually created manually?

I have just recently got Inventor after using Max and Maya for a few months and do not understand how to create a background image (For example: an orthographic sketch on the x/y/z axis).

Is it possible to automatically project the x-axis, z-axis or z-axis onto the sketch plane?
I.e. every time you open a new sketch the corresponding lateral and vertical axis will be projected onto the sketch.

When I am creating a drawing, every so often, when I draw something, it gives me different elevations for the Z axis. Is there a way to keep that at 0? I'm not sure if it's because of vendors blocks, or whatever the reason, and I know how to change the elevation back to 0, but how do I stop it from starting to begin with?

The behavior in AutoCAD 2012 has changed with regard to the UCS command. I am trying to rotate my UCS along the Z-axis.
In 2011, I could enter UCS [enter] Z [enter] then select 2 points on *any* line using END point osnaps to have the ucs rotate along the Z-axis at the angle of the selected line.
Now in 2012 when I enter UCS [enter] Z [enter], a rubber-band line displays anchored from a pre-selected point which appears to be the drawing origin, usually 0,0,0. I am only allowed to select a single point, which results in the UCS NOT rotating to match the line as before.
I am aware that I could now use the OBject option, and then select one end of the line. This is fine except it does not work if I select a line that is part of an attached xref. With the old method in 2011, I could select 2 points of *any* line.
I am also aware that I could "type" in a value in both cases above but that option is too time-consuming and error-prone. Are there any legacy options available for the UCS command to make it work as before? Or is there a way to override the UCS-Z command option to not pre-select the first point at the drawing origin?

I have this assembly shown in the pic. below. I'm trying to create a point or axis in the blue corner points (to attaches something later on) but it just won't let me choose it for some reason. I know that it's possible to to do that (almost sure I already done this trivial thing in inventor.)
Any reason it's not letting me choose the sketch points/line to in order to create points or axis(s)?

I am trying to create a wheel that can be rotate about the horizontal axis. It should have a hole for axle to fit through. However, when I try to do this it will not let me select the horizontal axis to rotate about. I also tried to rotate about a center line that I created but it wouldn't do that either..

I seem to be having trouble with polar tracking on. With this activated and in front view I can only create a line in up or down (Y) direction. I cannot create a line along the z axis. This happens randomly so I must be overlooking a setting somewhere.

Lisp routine or macro that will either rotate or align selected objects so they are parallel to an axis on the current UCS?
Specifically, when placing mtext to label an object. I typically align my ucs to the object then create the text so it is parallel to the object. It would be great if I could create the text with a rotation of 0, align my ucs to the object to be labeled and then with a single click, select the text making it parallel to the X axis.

When I use the copy with base point command in paper space and try to paste it into paper space of another drawing it seems to come in on a different axis or something. I can see the view ports as they are supposed to be however the text just shows as a line. It would be as if I were to put text in model space on top view and see it just fine then go to a front view and see just a line.

I am using projected and sketched geometry (2D sketches) in assembly space to create lines/ points that I intend to use to define planes and axes. The problem I have is that nearly all the geometry I create (lines and points in 2D sketches) is not "selectable" when I try to create planes or axes. I cannot even put a work points "on top of" my sketch points. Why are my sketches not usable in the assembly space? Since the components in my model are just two extruded rings I don't have any linear edges I can select to make this work/ define planes.

I would like to utilise the Layout Element: Reference System to draw the grid lines and grid values on paper space viewports.
But.I am working in South Africa. The WGS Lo systems are opposite to the northern hemisphere, positive is heading south not north. To solve this, most drawing offices (including ours) just reverse the signs of X and Y values.
Now you can see why I cannot use the Layout Element Reference System templates provided with Map. I need to change sign the X and Y text values.
How do I create a Reference System Template?
These are provided with Map:
Latitude-Longitude
Military Grid Reference System
United States National Grid
Custom map coordinate system
I tried to use 'Custom map coordinate system' but it is a fixed template, it does not provide change sign as needed.

i try to make an animation. I create a cylinder and i want to rotate it by longitudinal axis. i click 'components', select the cylinder and after i click 'position' to select the axis that axis system appears in the right side of the cylinder not in the middle. If i continue whit this settings the cylinder will rotate by a circle not by his longitudinal axis. How can i move that axis sistem in the middle of the cylinder? I can drag it but can't place it exactly in the middle.

Noticed that the multiple copy option has been removed from the rotate command? It used to be that I could choose the copy option in the rotate command and set a reference angle to create multiple copies of an object based on a rotational axis. Now the command will let you copy based on a reference angle, but only once. Is there a system variable I can set to bring this option back?

We have AutoCAD 2010 installed on 5 machines in our office. These machines work and save files to our server. One of the workstations always gets a pop up that it is missing reference files. No other workstations are running into this issue. We've tried having multiple users log into this specific computer but they all encounter the same error.
Another thing (which may be related to this error) the drawings that do open up on this computer don't line up. For instance we have a field in the lower right hand corner wiith text such as job name/number, tech who worked on the drawing etc. One all other computers this information lines up perfectly but on this one it doesn't as well os other lines on this machine don't line up properly.

After creating a parametricly dimensioned, fully constrained, 2D drawing I wanted to add a couple of annotative reference dimensions to two different curves. I first select the parametric radius dimension (default is annotative). Next I click on the curve, then click the desired location. The dimension shows up, highlighted for editing. I press enter. Now the over-constrained window pops up giving me two options: Create a Reference Dimension or Reselect the Object. I choose Reference Dimension. The dimension immediately disappears. No error shows in the command bar. Attached is the file. It is the two large radii along the bottom (or top, its symmetric) that I am trying to give reference dimensions.

I am working on a horizontal directional drill with multiple survey points.
The survey points make up (what looks like an upside down dome) and they are all connected with polylines. I need to add straight vertical lines to each point. Of course I can do this manually, but I'm wondering if there's a way to automate it. I've tried Lee's point manager, but it seems the problem is there's no option for xstart, xend, and ystart, yend. I also tried created a block out of a line then importing that on the points with point manager, but I need all of the lines to end at the same position at the top. This doesnt work because as you can see the points aren't all equal from the bottom. I also cannot find a way to trim blocks. I was hoping blocks would have the same xstart and xend, etc. as a line, but they don't.

I have the AutoCad Map 2009 (32bit) with Windows XP on one Computer and uploaded AutoCad LT 2011 (64bit) in Windows 7 (64bit) on a second Computer. The Files could not be migrated (not the same Program and Operating systems) In Release 11 all my Reference File colors are now faded in Model and Paper Space. What do I have to change so that it looks like in Map 2009?

whenever I click to attach a drawing reference nothing happens. I don't get the browse to file window.
I've tried using the GUI from the View menu / Palettes panel/external palette, Also from the command prompt by typing external references and attach still no joy.
I have all SPs installed. I tried exporting another user's profile and importing it to my CAD. Do I have to reinstall the software from scratch?

I'm using Architecture 2011, but the problem is pretty generic.
I am working with a very complex vendor drawing and using it as an xref to my working drawing. I need to be able to freeze parts of the xref and change colors (for plotting purposes) of other parts. Under ideal circumstance this would require simple layer manipulation.
My problem is that a large percentage of the vendor drawing is made up of blocks. There are nearly 1000 different blocks. Most of these blocks were created using layers other than 0 - quite often more than one layer is used. Sometimes the block is inserted on a layer that was used in it's creation, sometimes not. The only way I can omit one of these blocks from my drawing is to figure out what layer was used in it's creation and freeze that layer. You can see how this could be a pretty tedious process.
My limited CAD knowledge only gives me: edit all 1000 blocks, changing them to layer 0

In 5.3 I can create reference dimensions in sketch mode to my hearts content. They became very valuable as I would use them to determine placement of multiple features. Now, in IV 7, I have alot of trouble creating reference dimensions from adjacent features on the same surface. I have to change the way I'm working now and it has stumped me on a few occasions. is there a "new" feature I need to enable or is this the cost of progress?

Using C3d 2013. I am looking for a way to place the deflection angle of the PI of an Alignment in the label of a structure part that references said alignment. But PIs aren't an option when I select Reference Text type. Common sense tells me it would be under Alignments, but none of the PI data is an option of the Contents' Text Component Editor. I couldn't find it under any of the other Reference Text types either. I can pull the station value from the referenced alignment, is there a way to get it to tell me the deflection angle at the PI it sits on? Or even the difference in the instantaneous direction just before and just after the part?
I know listing the deflection angle of a PI is possible, as I have seen it in several examples of labeling alignments. I just want to place it in the label of other objects.who can tell me how to display LT (to represent left) and RT (to represent right) when the deflection is positive or negative respectively.
