3ds Max Modeling :: Instanced Geometry In Hair And Fur Is Scaling Wrong?

Oct 4, 2013

When I select instanced geometry in the Hair and Fur modifier, the individual strands are appearing much too thin. I had to go back to the instanced model and non-uniform scale it to make it really fat to compensate for this, but this is not ideal. How do I get it to represent the instanced geometry at its correct scale? Also, how do I get the default hair scale to start out longer so that I don't hit the 100% limit. It looks like I will have to style the hair guides individually to get them to be longer.

3ds Max Modeling :: Hair And Fur Among MrProxies?

Feb 13, 2012

I'm trying to grow some hair and fur among proxy objects.I was forced to convert almost everything to mrproxies to be able to navigate and render it out.

When i was done with that my boss wanted the last finish on the scene, and that was to add a little coat of fur on the sea bottom. I then chose to open a new scene in max, and xref the main scene with all the mrproxies and then grow my. That way i saved allot of calculations and it speeds up my viewport. I also want to render my fur separate so the main scene just gonna act like a mask during rendertime.

The problem comes now. When I render the scene everything whent as expected, exept the masking. It looks like the mrProxies is "planes", How comes?

Is this just how proxies work or does it exist a workaround?

Edit: The hair and fur is "buffer" type.

3ds max 2012 - Mentalray

Edit 2: The issue only appears when using buffer. mrPrim and Geo maskes fine. So maybe its the way the hair is calculated and not the proxies.

3ds Max Modeling :: Cutting Geometry Using Texture Map?

May 1, 2012

I was wondering if there is a way to cut out geometry using a texture map.

So lets say you have a quad thats uv mapped. you apply a black texture with a white dot in the middle. Is there a way to cut that circle out using a method that just aproximates the shape?

I would be using this for complex stuff. I understand its a crazy question but I figured no harm in asking. The only thing I know to do is to apply the texture and then in the viewport just hand cut. But its a lot of stuff to cut so i'm open to any shortcuts and tips.

Maya Modeling :: Hiding Inner Geometry?

Jul 24, 2011

Say I have a car engine that I created. to make it easier on myself I made it out of a bunch of separate pieces. then at the end I combined them into one. somewhere down the line I'll want to animate the pieces separately, but until then I dont want all that inner geometry rendering because it takes up unnecessary render time. is there a function in maya where I can delete all invisible mesh geometry? so then any faces inside the outermost shell will be deleted.

Maya Modeling :: How To Make Geometry Like A Fever Chart

Apr 18, 2012

I'm working on a project that needs to make a renderable shape off a curve, the curve points are based on a random set of data - so basically I'm making a fever chart. I need the curve to go exactly along with the points, so I used bezier curve. The curve looks like pic-01

Since curve doesn't show up in render, so i'm trying to make a tube shape.
1) a polygon plane, then go edit mesh - extrude. like pic-02. The extrude division is the same amount of points
2) a nurbs circle, then go surface - extrude. like pic-03 and pic-04.

As you all can see, none of these two look good. I can understand that this is because the turns are too dramatic, but I wonder if there is a way to get around the limit and generate a graph like pic-05 in 3d.

Maya Modeling :: Don't Highlight Edges Of Selected Geometry?

Jan 6, 2014

So, in max there is a way to turn this off.  So that when you select an object the edges are not visible.  That way, when you select and object and have a look at it, you do not have to be distracted by the wire frame.

Is there a way to do this is Maya?  I'd lke the geo to appear as flat shading without the wireframe visible even when I select it.The reason is, I want to select it, and work on the UV mapping.  I'd like to make some changes to the map, and see how they look on the model without having to deselect the mesh each time I make a change and what to see it without the wireframe.

When i'm in Max, is there any way for me to tell Max that these dummies should be instances of another object?

Maya Modeling :: Create Geometry On Surface Of An Object

I get a mirror, but not based on the pivot, but it seems the mirrored geometry wants to be attached to the original drawn polys as shown on picture 3. Could it be a bug or is this how Quad Drawn objects are intended to behave?

I can't get it to scale down the way it is depicted in the photos. I tried selecting the faces and simply scaling, and I also tried selecting the faces and choosing "Extrude" first, and that did not work either.

Maya Modeling :: Scaling Vertices Uniformly?

Is there any other method for scaling an object in it's position using the vertices?

For example if you modeled wires or cables or bars and deleted the history but now you think they are too thick or too thin and you want to scale down without compromising their positions.

Look how I found 2 solutions, the cluster option takes more time.

I could not make a single cable on a floor thin out uniformly with the scale tool option. It did work with cluster on each bend but is a bit tedious.

3ds Max Modeling :: Fitting Geometry Shape Into Human Body Mesh

Dec 13, 2013

I'm physiotherapist and researcher interested in human body posture analysis. Goal of my researches are to make 3d  digital model of human posture. Right now I'm using Microsoft kinect to build a human body model, but it's difficult to do automatic analysis on that mesh.  In our team we create an algorithm which analysis posture, right now we base on points located on the body, for that is necessary to manually locate that point's which is inaccurate and time consuming. Our idea is to use divide human body into segments and then fit in those segments some geometry figures ( cylinders , bal, ), next step is to calculate center of masses of those figures, so we simplify the posture to 20-40 points , and calculation of those points can be made automatic.

Maya Modeling :: How To Set Amount Of Scaling With Each Movement Of The Scrollbar

Sep 8, 2013

It only seems to affect the viewports in which I am locked to a camera angle - e.g. top, side, and front. I can zoom in perfectly fine, but as soon as I zoom out with the scroll bar it immediately puts the camera back to some sort of preset distance. This makes working on the model an incredibly annoying and disruptive task.

While also on the subject of cameras, my zooming in the viewport in which I am able to freely move about, the zoom in and out strength seems to have increased tenfold and is also causing problems. To put it into mathematical terms, the zoom in/out seems to be multiplicative rather than additive. This happened at about the same time the other thing started happening. Is there any way to set the amount of scaling with each movement of the scrollbar

3ds Max Modeling :: Scaling Low And High Poly / Viewport Clipping Making Model Disappear

Apr 3, 2011

What i have is a low polymodel that's quite small in scale, i'm modelling around a higher poly model, when i zoom in, the viewport clipping kicks in and parts of the model disappear, so i cant work on the small details. What i need to do is scale up both my low poly and high poly, work on the small details and scale it back down.

In maya there are multiple solutions to this; The first and most obvious would be to increase the near clip in the camera attributes.

The second would be to freeze transformations on the low and high poly, scale up the model, work on it and then scale it back to the value of 1.

The third would be to put both the low and high poly models into a group, scale up the group, work on the model, return the group back to its default size and ungrouping. Personally i would use this method to preserve the original scale values on the low and high poly models.

Is there a way of doing any of the above in 3ds max?

Photoshop :: Hair Color (Black Hair To White)

Aug 12, 2007

trying every layer mask combo I could think of to create a realistic shade of white hair that doesn't look like I just used the brush tool to make it.

I've tried lighting up the shadows with the curves option then using the selective color option. But all that does is make a very fake looking film to put over the eyebrows (ya it's eyebrows I'm working on, I'm trying to get them to match a white wig the subject is wearing.)

I've also tried using the solid color option, and a color overlay and that just came out weird.

Has anyone ever turned pitch black hair to white and had it still look like hair?

Edge Animate CC :: Get Responsive Scaling AND Adaptive Scaling Combined?

Feb 21, 2014

New Responsive Scaling feature is great.

It's enabled me to add an Edge Animate file to my responsive Wordpress site using the Edge Suite Plugin.

Only problem for me is that although the 3.7MB file I’ve created scales perfectly on all devices it struggles to play on smartphones. (I assume it's too big and too power hungry to play smoothly on smartphones - even since I've added a pre-loader.)

So, in an ideal world, what I need is a separate low res Edge Animate file that only plays on smartphones.

Failing that, I’d be happy with a 'Down-level Stage' image which could replace the Edge Animate animation.

For a moment I thought I’d found a solution when I came across this Adobe TV movie: [URL]

Unfortunately this clever solution only works when the new Responsive Scaling feature is NOT selected. As soon as it is selected, the animation no longer changes from one layout size to another when the browser window is reduced.

I don’t mind whether the fix is in Edge Animate, Wordpress or the Edge Suite Plugin - I just want a solution!

Photoshop :: Scaling, Scaling...

Aug 19, 2006

We are designing some web graphics for a friend. By "we" I mean me and a guy who lives on the opposite coast.

He did the initial page layout/design as a PhotoShop tif, at 300 dpi, in layers and about 5 inches wide. The idea, on his end, was that it would be a small file size and, therefore, faster to download on my end. With me so far?

Anyway, I'm suppose to convert it to 800 ppi wide, 72 dpi, jpg. Sounds easy enough. Or not Do all the scaling and now the graphics don't look right. None of the layer effects are right!

How do I scale his graphic, for my purposes and, once it's the size I need it, have everything look the way he created it?

Example: Text at that 5 inch wide, 300 dpi size with a one point stroke on it looked find when the graphic was 5 inch wide and 300 dpi, but at 800 ppi wide and 72 dpi, it's all wrong

Is there a preference or something I should be clicking somewhere and I'm just missing it?
