VideoStudio :: AVCHD 1080P (panasonic) Quality Bad In Preview Window
Jul 7, 2012
I have VSP X4 Ultimate and a Panasonic TM900K. I have been recording mostly in 1080p for the best quality, but I have notice when compared to VLC or another editor, the preview window's quality is very poor. On my 1080P monitor it looks no better than a DVD. This, in of itself, is not a big issue, but it does make it hard to use VSP X4 to do fine video corrections.
The one that is is when I play down-converted videos from VSP X4 (To 7Kbps DVD) the quality is visibly worse than with my other editor. I have been testing on my playstation (just playing the mpeg 2 files via my media server) (the PS3 is set not to up-convert). When I try to do the same thing on my computer using VLC I do not see much of a difference, but VLC is doing a lot to render on the PC (de-interlacing and all).

Earlier this year I purchased a Panasonic HDC-DS800 high definition camcorder. After years of editing ATI files, I'm going to use my VideoStudio (X4) to edit AVCHD files.
To get the files from the camcorder to the computer, there are 2 options. One is to go directly to the SD card on the camcorder through the My Computer option. This gives me .MTS files, which I can transfer to my hard drive.
The other option is to use the software supplied with the camcorder, which is HD Writer AE 3.0. This transfers to my hard drive .m2ts files. Along with the .m2ts files, it also transfers (or creates) .tmb files, .pmpd files, and .cont files.

I want to "remaster" my old travel movies (made with Ulead then) to VSX5 Bluray movies. I still have the old VSP file ; the photos taken with an old camera then had high enough resolution but my videos were at 240 lines then. I know that VSX5 upscales automatically to Bluray at rendering phase but what is the best way to enhance my videos to 1080 ; if done prior to rendering, will it yield a better quality movie (and if so, how do I do that ?) or do I have to leave it to VSX5 rendering phase as the only/best process . My 240 videos look ok at 240 but are currently "pixelly" when I view them on my current hdmi PC monitor at native 1080 ?

I am planning to buy a Blu-ray burner. Is there a difference in quality between AVCHD (that I already use to produce my VS movies) and Blu-ray BDMV movies produced with VS ? Is it visible ? I have a PS3 and a 50 inch plasma.

I am confronted with a considerably quality loss when I edited and rendered the material from my Sony HDR-CX130 camcorder. It shoots *.m2ts 1920x1080 at 50i (this is in fact 25 fps, I assume).
The loss is visible when there are moving objects or when the camera moves: very not-fluent and not-smooth movement-representation, while the original footage playbacks fine and smoothly in any mediaplayer (Sony PMB or Windows Mediaplayer).
As if the rendered material has a framerate of 12 fps! Which isn't the case, in fact.
I did some experiments: render to other formats like MPEG, tried it on the laptop of a friend who also has CVS X4 installed (W7 SP1, i5 2,3GHz, 4GB RAM),I used properties of first videoclip (which actually doesn't happen), set camcorder at 50p; all without better results.
Project properties I use in CVS X4:
PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI-files
8 bit, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Frame-based
Microsoft Video 1
This I was told here to use in order to get stills that are also 1920 x 1080 in size.[URL]
Is the un-fluent playback of edited AVCHD normal, will it be better in version X6?This is visible when playing back the rendered footage in Sony PMB and WMplayer as well.

I have set my video capture format to 16:9 (widescreen). The picture in the movie capture preview window is 4:3 and stretched vertically. However when the file is played it is in fact 16:9.
Is there a way I can set the preview window to display the correct aspect ratio during capture ?

I just upgraded to windows 7 and now there is a blank preview window when I try to capture. I have tried capturing in both DV and DVD and no preview. I am capturing via firewire from a VHS. This worked perfectly under windows xp but is not working under 7. It seems that it does capture but I cannot preview in order to find my spot on the tape.

I am using VideoStudio Pro X3, and am having a lot of difficulty with the preview window.
When I play the video I have been working on, it runs the video at about 1 frame per second or so, and renders the program useless. The odd thing is, when I select an individual clip and click run, it runs at a proper frame rate.
Is there some sort of codec or driver that I am missing?

I edited the project-properties to HD, according to the hints Trevor gave in this topic:
[URL]
As a work-round----Change the project properties to use 1920 x 1080 and your images will be 1920 x 1080.
Settings-Project Properties (Alt+Enter)
Edit File Format ---Microsoft Avi Files
Edit
Avi Tab
Compression to Microsoft Video 1 (there may be others you can use—Div X ??)
General Tab
Frame Size---User Defined to 1920 x 1080
Ok now the screen shots should all use the larger image size.

I am using VideoStudio Pro X3 and trying to understand some behavior in the program. I have some AVI files which I added to the gallery. If I play the video from the gallery in the preview window, the exposure appears correct. But when I pause the video, the image becomes darker (with more contrast). I've attached 2 image captures which demonstrate. After the video clip is added to the timeline, playing or pausing the clip will also appear darker. After I trim and create a new AVI and watch both in Windows Media Player, the original is brighter and the edited video is darker. What is causing this change to the video's exposure??

When I select photos in library or on the video track they go black in preview window... nothing appears. But not all... some don't go black. This happens after working on project for 15-20 minutes. When I first start up computer they all appear in preview when selected. No problem then. Same if I shut down and restart computer. Only after working on project awhile does it happen. Also after some time working I get window saying no memory. I thought with 4 ram I could work for hours before getting any problems like this. I plug in my external WD Passport HD only for backups. And with MacShield filter turned off, still have problem. Could it be the VS Pro X5 software?

I recently purchased VSP4 and when capturing from Panasonic camera via fire wire, the preview window remains blank but capture is successful. I can preview video on LCD screen of camera but that is all. All the settings seem to be ok. (PAL). However, the options panel is greyed out except for insert to timeline option. Also, the video properties in the options panel are all greyed out. I have a previous version VS3 on another computer which shows the preview window OK on capture. Could this be the integrated video card in my new computer or is there something else going on here?

Firstly note I am using Videostudio Pro X4.
I have noticed many times that when I add the CIRCLE transition between two video clips that when I drag the 'scrubber' along through the two clips and transition, when the scrubber goes past/through the circle transition the preview window goes blank (displays black).
If I change the CIRCLE to any other transition it displays (the transition) correctly but as soon as I put the CIRCLE back it once again only shows BLACK.
If I PLAY the project the CIRCLE transition displays correctly - it is only when dragging the scrubber that the problem exists.
Is there a known problem with the CIRCLE transition?

I was working for a while with VideoStudio ProX5 and I'm trying the demo version of VideoStudio ProX6 and I've got some issue...
First, my video files are .MOV from my Nikon D3100. 1920X1080 24FPS H.264/MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding.
My computer: HP Laptop DV6 Intel Core i3 350M @ 2.27GHz. 8GB of memory. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470. On Win7 Family Premium 64bits.
So it's a car video, cars are at street speed or lower and you can clearly see the sag of the cars. I've try different output (.avi, .mp4, .mts etc... ) from custom to the one included in the program and still sag like crazy.

My Canon HF S21 is set to record at PF25 (i.e 25 fps PROGRESSIVE), and also I choose the highest recording quality : MXP (1920 X 1080, 24 Mbps). When I choose to save the .MTS file here`s what happens :
1. Choosing H.264-MAIN in the Compression tab, the video data rate is limited to 20000 KBps.
2. To have 25 fps (that is, PAL) AND progressive playback, my only choice is to output a file at 1280 X 720. If I choose 1920 X 1080 , AND Frame-based, the Frame Rate drop-down menu becomes greyed out at 30 fps ! Of course, at the Corel VideoStudio tab, I have unticked the "Perform non-sqare pixel rendering", because the source video is made of raster (i.e square) pixels, unlike the HDV 1440 X 1080 recordings.
3. Choosing MPEG-4 HD, the Properties of the video file to be rendered appear as follows :
24bits, 1920 X 1080, 30fps
Frame Based
H.264 Main Profile video, 15000 Kbps
32000 Hz, 16bit, stereo
MPEG AAC Audio, 128Kbps
4. No luck either if I choose Blu ray > PAL H.264 (1920 X1080). The "improvement" appears to be the VBRof 22700 Kbps, but VideoStudio insists on rendering interlaced (Upper Field first) out of my progressive video. The same rendering settings appear if I choose AVCHD > PAL HD-1920. I shall try the Template Manager and see if I can convince VS NOT to alter in any way the quality of the source clip. Meanwhile, I am very interested to read about your experiences with 1080p.

I use a SLR to capture video and do this at Full HD @ 50 fps. It's crucial that I keep this quality throughout the project.
But I have not been able to find ANY export option/file format that exports at 1080p/50fps! Is it really possible that VS X5 does not support this?

I have VS Pro X5. My footage is shot at 1920 x 1080p with 25 fps and I would like to produce mpeg4 video file with same parameters. I select custom settings, mpeg-4, H.264 high, frame size 1920 x 1080, but then fps is set to 30 and it is greyed out. Is this the limitation of VS? Is there any way to produce high quality HD with 25 fps?

I currently have X5 and am wanting to burn my 1080P footage to a blu ray disc. However the settings when I select 'create disc' only allow upper or lower field, and not frame based. Does X6 have the capability to create a disc at 1080P, is it worth purchasing? Or does it even matter if I output to upper field first (quality-wise)?

When outputting as an MP4 file, the result is SO ugly, it almost completely destroys any fine detail in the image, and the sound is total garbage (it sounds like a 22k 64kbps mp3, just utter crap), so MP4 is just not an option for me.
Unfortunately, as it has been brought to my attention, Corel doesn't seem to truly support 60fps, even though most new cameras film in 60fps--so when I use the modes that are supposed to be for 60fps, it flipflops back and forth between 30fps and 60fps. I just want an output that's consistent, not this flipflopping garbage. There's ONE mode I can use, AVCHD, that gives me a consistent framerate AS LONG AS I don't put any titles up, and as long as none of the source material is of a resolution different from the main--otherwise it will look like a glitched mess.
Since they've crippled being able to adjust the project properties outside anything DVD quality, I can't really adjust anything.
Is there an output mode that will give me a consistent 30fps that supports 1080p?

I use VSX3 to edit down .mov files created with a contour HD helmet camera. I have been using a 720p version of the helmet camera and have had no issues with editing (other than the ocasional C++ runtime errors and the VSX3 program crashing randomly which just seems to be a Corel programming issue) Recently I got to use a 1080p contour HD helmet camera and have problems editing the files in VSX3. In the preview window in the edit screen the 1080p file plays fine. But when I try to trim the file down using the "multi-trim video" function the file is very jittery, takes a long time to load and the sound is in and out, almost like the program can't handle a 1080p file for editing. The "mult-trim video" works fine for the 720p videos.

Have put VideoStudio4 on my PC.I'm trying to use it with a new Panasonic HDC SD900.
I used the camera's software to download my video files on to my PC.
Corel VideoStudio 4 has a capture mode and an edit mode. I’d been using edit and then trying to browse for my files so I could add them into my library for use in that film. It couldn’t see the .mt2s files.
I’ve now tried connecting the camcorder and using Corel’s capture mode. Someone had suggested that to find my files I needed to follow private, then AVCHD, then choose BDMV, then choose the folder STREAM. But there’s nothing there.

I'm running VSproX2 and I'm trying to capture video from my Panasonic DVX100 camera. I have some Christmas stuff I want to edit. I cant seem to get VS to recognize the Camera. I dont know if it's a setting in the camera or a bad firewire (4pin) port.
Does the camera need a driver to be loaded? Should the PC have recognized the Camera when it was plugged in (like USB devices)?
I have the camera set to VCR mode. In VS, I go to Capture and select Capture Video. It says "Either no device is installed, or the device is not connected". Nothing is listed in Source or Format.

I have just upgraded to VideoStudio Pro 5 (from 4) as 1080/50p editing is now available in the upgrade; I shoot my source footage on a Panasonic HS900. Whilst I will edit my footage at 50p I cannot, of course, create a video file to burn to a BD without losing image quality, with Blu Ray only accepting a 24 fps frame rate. I understand after editing my footage in 50p I will then need to re-encode the video file to back to 24 fps if I am to maintain full '1080' quality and I'm wondering which of the 'drop-down' video file templates I should be using to achieve this?
I cannot seem to find anything in FAQ that exactly 'hits the spot'.
