VideoStudio :: Panasonic HD 1080/50p - Editing And BD Burning
Jul 25, 2012
I have just upgraded to VideoStudio Pro 5 (from 4) as 1080/50p editing is now available in the upgrade; I shoot my source footage on a Panasonic HS900. Whilst I will edit my footage at 50p I cannot, of course, create a video file to burn to a BD without losing image quality, with Blu Ray only accepting a 24 fps frame rate. I understand after editing my footage in 50p I will then need to re-encode the video file to back to 24 fps if I am to maintain full '1080' quality and I'm wondering which of the 'drop-down' video file templates I should be using to achieve this?
I cannot seem to find anything in FAQ that exactly 'hits the spot'.

I upgraded to X3 and it will happily load 1920 x 1080 @ 50p x264/AVC files from a Pan HDC-HS700 just fine (and reports the details correctly but as PAL HDMV). As I play these back in native form on my HTPC (and they look stunning) I just want to EDIT them, then smart render them out in the same format.
This is where I seem to come unstuck, as if I choose "Create Video FIle --> Same as First Video Clip", X3 wants to pump it out as PAL, MPEG 720 x 576 @25fps! I can also not find or create a template that matches the specs of the format.
So
1) Can X3 handle 1920 x 1080 @ 50p x264/AVC out of the box
2) Is there a "tweak" like old versions where you can expose additional CODEC settings to handle 1920 x 1080 @ 50p x264/AVC
3) ....if not what alternative software does work with 1920 x 1080 @ 50p x264/AVC (as Pana's bundled HD Writer is very limited)

Here is an extract from the Corel web site:
"VideoStudio® Pro X5 also supports the frame rates found in newer HD camcorders, so you can edit in 50 or 60fps mode, which is ideal for higher quality and slow motion sports effects in footage."
I use my 3 years old Panasonic HDC-TM300 (released in 2009) camera in 1080/50i (17Mbps) mode and I'm planning to upgrade it to one of the newest models HC-X900M/HC-X900/HC-X800 just released in 2012.
These brand new cameras can be used in 1080/50p mode (28Mbps) which results in beautiful footage and their Image Stabilization is almost perfect.
Previous models like HDC-TM700 (released in 2010) or HDC-TM900 (released in 2011) are also able to shoot in 1080/50p by the way.
Somehow the video editor software manufacturers are in a big delay however I know that 1080/50p (AVCHD Version 2.0) was standardized only in July 2011.
My question is the following: is it possible with X5 to edit 1080/50p .mts video files then to export them into the same 1080/50p .mts format without any downgrading?
The only modification is just the editing work should be.
Editing and exporting are two different things, but this is the key issue.
Other vendors claim that their product (eg. AVID, Vegas Pro 10) is able to edit 1080/50p but nobody mentions whether is it also possible to export these edited videos into the original .mts 1080/50p format or not?
PS: if it is not possible then the 1080/50p is useless due to the necessary quality decreasing! maybe this is the reason why the camera producers still keep in their brand new models the "good old" 1080/50i mode...,but what is the technical reason of missing this 1080/50p .mts output format, only the delay in software development?

I am having issues converting AVCHD Video (.MTS) videos to WMV HD 1080 30p. (16x9) When I try to use this default option the final result never comes out 16x9 widescreen. The original is 16x9 widescreen. (In the settings tab it is checked to be 16x9).Now if I use the WMV HD 720p, it will be 16x9 widescreen (using same original video).
I am pretty sure this did work fine when I first installed this software, but something has changed...and I know I have not touched any settings at all.

Are the bigger 1080 files harder to work with or slower than 720? I have a Panasonic camera that takes 720 video and VideoStudio 4 seems to handle them pretty well.
I might be getting a Canon that can do 1080 for my upcoming honeymoon. Since DVDs go back down to 480i or whatever, does shooting in 1080 really add anything quality-wise when converting to back down to 480 DVD?
I don't have a blu-ray maker on my machine, but maybe someday so don't know if should shoot videos in 1080 or 720. So should I shoot 1080 just in case? Are the files a lot bigger?

All my clips are 1440 x 1080 but, for some reason, the Project Properties are 720 x 576.Don't see that as any problem providing I can select the higher quality settings when I go to create a Video File. And that's where the problem begins. If I go Share/Create Video File/Custom I can see the properties in the Save Options box are 720 x 576 and I can't change them.I've tried clicking on Options and looking under the Compression tab but my only options there are PAL DVD or NTSC DVD. I can't find any option that will let me get the file back to the original properties of 1440 x 1080.I'm NOT trying to create a DVD - just a high quality file that I can play back on my computer and on my HD TV.

I'm struggling to create a 1440 x 1080 mpeg 2 video file with a variable data rate.
The original HD footage is 1440 x 1080 but I can't find this option when I try to create a video file from my project. I am sure that I had many more options when rendering a video file in X2.
If I try using Create Video File/Same as Project Settings I can only get a 720 x 576 file.
If I try using Create Video File/Same as First Video Clip it looks like it's doing the job but I think I'm getting a file with a fixed data rate of 25,000 kbps which is too much for playback on my Western Digital TV gizmo (whereas a variable data rate of 25,000 kbps would play okay).
If I try Create Video File/Custom I can only get what I want by switching from mpeg2 to MPEG Transport-Stream Files (whatever they may be) but when I try playback on my Western Digital TV player I get the message "no audio channel" although the image is very good.
So how can I get a Video File the same as my original footage but with a variable data rate?

Earlier this year I purchased a Panasonic HDC-DS800 high definition camcorder. After years of editing ATI files, I'm going to use my VideoStudio (X4) to edit AVCHD files.
To get the files from the camcorder to the computer, there are 2 options. One is to go directly to the SD card on the camcorder through the My Computer option. This gives me .MTS files, which I can transfer to my hard drive.
The other option is to use the software supplied with the camcorder, which is HD Writer AE 3.0. This transfers to my hard drive .m2ts files. Along with the .m2ts files, it also transfers (or creates) .tmb files, .pmpd files, and .cont files.

Have put VideoStudio4 on my PC.I'm trying to use it with a new Panasonic HDC SD900.
I used the camera's software to download my video files on to my PC.
Corel VideoStudio 4 has a capture mode and an edit mode. I’d been using edit and then trying to browse for my files so I could add them into my library for use in that film. It couldn’t see the .mt2s files.
I’ve now tried connecting the camcorder and using Corel’s capture mode. Someone had suggested that to find my files I needed to follow private, then AVCHD, then choose BDMV, then choose the folder STREAM. But there’s nothing there.

I'm running VSproX2 and I'm trying to capture video from my Panasonic DVX100 camera. I have some Christmas stuff I want to edit. I cant seem to get VS to recognize the Camera. I dont know if it's a setting in the camera or a bad firewire (4pin) port.
Does the camera need a driver to be loaded? Should the PC have recognized the Camera when it was plugged in (like USB devices)?
I have the camera set to VCR mode. In VS, I go to Capture and select Capture Video. It says "Either no device is installed, or the device is not connected". Nothing is listed in Source or Format.

Just got a new Panasonic SD700. It should effectively be the same as the other Panasonic 700 camcorders like TM700 and HS700, but this one stores on memory cards only.
Now, with my VS 11.5+ (Windows XP SP3), clips whose length is 1 minute or less work fine, clips that are 2 minutes cause my VS 11.5+ to crash when I try to preview them. So, I can insert all my clips in the VS timeline. SmartProxy is on and with SmartProxy Manager I can check that the proxy files are created (although it takes a very long time).
Then I do nothing but try to play a preview of the clips. Clips that are 1 minutes or less play well. Then I have two clips that are almost exactly 2 minutes. These 2-minute clips play for some 5 or 6 seconds, then the picture halts but sound goes on for another few seconds and at roughly 10 - 12 seconds I get the typical message "this software failed, do you want to send a report to Microsoft ".
The same problem occurs whether I directly copy the MTS files from the memory card and then insert in my timeline in VS or download the clips to my hard disc with the HD Writer software that shipped with the camera and that renames them to M2TS.
This is repeatable. Rebooting does not work. I installed the latest directx today. The total duration of my test projects have been 2 - 4 minutes. All my test clips are 1920 x 1080i PAL, with a bit rate of 16800. The Panasonic software is able to play the clips well. Project settings are default DVD.
I'd like to be able to make AVCHD discs of my footage as well as standard DVDs for friends and family who don't have BlueRays yet. A year ago I was able to edit some footage from a friend's camcorder and produce both DVDs and AVCHD discs from that material. The clip properties then were close to the same as what I am using today. But now I cannot even get started.

I have started a new video project with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 in Photoshop CS6with a pixel aspect ratio set to square.. In the project I add a video to the timeline. The source video was created in QuickTime and exported at a 1920 x 1080 resolution MOV file. I have check both the source clip at the canvas siye and have confirmed that both are 1920 x 1080. However, when I import the video it takes up less than the entire frame. It appears that the video is being scaled down so that there is some white space to the right and below the video clip. See the image below.
In the past I have been able to import 1920x1080 video to a 1920x1080 project without a problem. I have 4 or 5 examples that have worked well.

I have VSP X4 Ultimate and a Panasonic TM900K. I have been recording mostly in 1080p for the best quality, but I have notice when compared to VLC or another editor, the preview window's quality is very poor. On my 1080P monitor it looks no better than a DVD. This, in of itself, is not a big issue, but it does make it hard to use VSP X4 to do fine video corrections.
The one that is is when I play down-converted videos from VSP X4 (To 7Kbps DVD) the quality is visibly worse than with my other editor. I have been testing on my playstation (just playing the mpeg 2 files via my media server) (the PS3 is set not to up-convert). When I try to do the same thing on my computer using VLC I do not see much of a difference, but VLC is doing a lot to render on the PC (de-interlacing and all).

All procesess before ( multiplexing, VOB generation etc.) are working fine but when the DVD steps into the burn phase there is an error 5.0.0. sometimes it goes several times not. The error has been repeated at least on 3 different computers.
The X6 is working fine. On my computer I did not change anything except recorded new videos for editing.

The VSP files don't now seem to be any use at all in the share section. I am back to using version 12 that seems to work

I've been trying to find the right tool for this job for over a year (Premiere Elements, Cyberlink, Corel, etc.) and in some way or another, they all let me down (usually during the rendering process). I have an LG Blu-ray burner I bought a year ago (all my software is up to date with the latest device drivers). I have created one blu-ray disc, a very simple one as a test and it works, but I can't remember the software I used. This weekend I tried using VideoStudio pro X3. When I went to the Share tab and clicked create disc, it launch dvd factory 2010 (I think) and blu-ray was not a format choice. I made sure my version (although trial) was fully up to date with all the latest updates.

Is there a facility in X5 to automatically verify a DVD after burning, I have looked but cant find one. When burning DVDs for customers I use X5 to make an ISO file then burn it using Nero Express 6 as there is a verify facility that can be selected. Maybe I am being too cautious but on a few occasions I have had discs fail the verify, I feel a bit more confident if it passes the verify the DVD is ok. If I can burn with a verify afterwards in X5 this will make the job a bit easier.

I have a version of VideoStudio Pro X3 that came pre-installed on an HP computer. It tends to crash, but I can muddle thru to the point where I can save a project as a video file. Once that step is done, there is no option, not even a greyed out button, that allows me to burn a DVD. The saved file is there, just can't do anything with it. Been thru the process and the instructions several times, the option to burn disks seems to be missing. Is this some sort of trial version, maybe stripped down? The option to export to portable device is also limited to low res WMV, no MP4, 3g2, etc.
I tried to run an update, but the program comes back stating that no new updates are available.

I have been using Ulead VS 11+ for some time with great results. I recently upgraded to Corel VideoStudio Pro X3. The video capturing and editing works flawlessly however when I then want to burn the video to DVD by selecting the “share” tab and make disk it seems to start up DVD Factory which I find totally lame compared to the DVD burning associated with SV11. There seems to be no advanced functions accessible, I can’t seem to insert a photo into the back ground of the menu title, I can't create new decorations to create new back grounds for my title, I can’t burn the project to an .iso file etc. etc. In addition if you save the project and then come back to it later it does not pick up you saved project, and it does not indicate where it has saved to project. Am I missing something here. At the moment I edit in SV ProX3 and burn in VS11.

Have Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camera and transferred 3D videos to PC. Starting X6 program files are recognized as 3D (little box bottom left) putting videos in timeline. Went to "Create Video File" and selected 3D per manual.
Now here is what I need to know my options as presented. I want to use a Bluray disc to burn with burner (BD) and play in my Sony S570 3D player to 3D Tv. Do I use the Bluray setting and what format (1920x1080)?
I know there is AVCHD, MVC and so on as choices. In other words (in case others have similar camcorder and X6 software) what are the steps I need to follow. I was wondering if I had to leave file as is or have it side by side, etc.
My 3D Tv is able to play any formats (side, Up/DN, etc) I used the Sony Play Memories and burned a bluray successfully but played only in 2D. I've read about players needed to be AVCHD 2.0 to play Play Memories 3D made disc.
I want to be able to use X6 to create discs, burn them and play in BD 3D player.

I've been a VS users since version 6 and have been able to work around the many nuances that each version upgrade had. I upgraded to VS X4, got myself a blu-ray burner and some BD-R's, and prepared my home videos. I'm consistantly geting the 'Unspecified Error 5:0:0' during the burning stage. After 6 wasted BD-R discs,.
Camera: Canon Vixia HF20, all AVCHD formatted video
Background music selected for all menus
Motion menu checked (tried unchecked as well)
No background image (using one of the provided 8 templates)
Moving path unchecked (tried checked as well)
Menu In/Out: none (tried both enabled at default, initially)
Video length is 19.66GB total, 26 menued video segments
I've updated to X4 SP1
I even tried copying over the afCvtTitleMenuRenterUnit.dll 'fix'.
For the video segments, I initially let X4 render them all. When it failed, I created video files (previously my standard method when making discs), creating .m2t (blu-ray H.264 (1920x1080)) for each segment and used those video files for all future burning attempts (as opposed to the VS Project files).
I can see the blu-ray disc has almost fully been written to after ejecting it (after the error). However, it can't be read either on my computer or on a standard TV blu-ray player.
I haven't tried burning a DVD yet, and will try that next to see if this is just related to blu-ray discs, or not. I can't really tell if all of the other posts on this similar topic were in regards to DVD burning, or blu-ray burning.
Running into this issue on earlier verisions, I was able to make an ISO file then burn a DVD with other software. That option doesn't seem available for blu-ray discs?

Also, while burning the detailed progress display continues to say "Video/Audio Multiplexing" through the entire process until closing the disc.

I'm trying to burn +/- 1gb .mov/mp4 files to dvd to watch on a dvd player hooked up to a tv. I tried burning the mov/mp4 files directly to dvd but my dvd player isn't able to read them. VideoStudio 12 was included on my computer, will it convert mov/mp4 files to a format that can be burned to a dvd that I can watch on my tv?
I don't need to edit the files, just burn them to dvd in the highest quality possible to watch on my tv. If it will, are there any tutorials on how to do this?

I have a Dell Studio 540 desktop running Vista Home Premium. Burner is a PLDS DVD+-RW DH-16A6S ATA Device. I recently burnt 1hr35m mpg to double layered disc without any issue. I then used VSX2 to create DVD using slightly modified menu templates and 12 chapters. I felt the initial stall may have been a glitch so attempted again. The burn stopped once more at 99% complete as indicated in attached jpg.
