Revit :: Creating Wall Types
Feb 21, 2012
How do I create simple wall types? I would like to create 2x6 and 2x4 walls with 7/16" OSB on them. I would like to see each stud when I going into 3D and I would like the dimensions to be from face of framing; not the OSB or centerline.
I would like to mimic the plan dimensions when I input the building into Rivet. Basically, I want to build a stick framed home so I can add the floors, walls and roof and then go into the mechanical and see how it all stacks out and is going to come together.

Most of the interior walls in the house are the same materials and finishes - finishes of veneer plaster painted, but rooms are to be differnent colors. I can make a wall the color that I want, but ALL that type walls become that color. Is there any way to make several different colors of rooms witihout creating literally dozens of different wall types?

I want to make a list of all the wall types i have defined in our project-template.
But when i try the schedules i only seem to be able to list those that are "in use"?
Legend view seems totally useless as you cannot tag or list the elements and info like "description" etc.

This is the first time I experience a major problem with Revit 2012. I created a duplicate of an 8" concrete masonry wall for my student project. Then I selected the Edit option in the Structure to change the rendered material to concrete masonry. Suddenly the program freezes and crashes. A window pops up stating that Windows has detected a problem with Revit and must shut the program down. I've everything since my last save. As of now, I recreated a duplicate of the masonry wall I need and started drawing some of the walls for my project but I'm afraid to experiment with other materials. Background Information about my computer: I downloadeda free version of Revit 2012 student software to practice at home. I have Windows 7 64-bit, 6GB of Ram and Intel (R) Core i7 2.20GHz...(I checked all the software requirements before downloading the correct version of Revit 2012)
Do I have to uninstall the program and reinstall it again? Would the problem go away?

I'm trying to make a Wall Types Legend using the Legend function in 2011. I did the first wall type just fine, placed it in section, tagged the material, etc. Now when I go to place another wall in a section view, it tells me the component is not visible in selected view. They are both new construction phase, stacked walls.

I'm trying to separate my ground floor slab into two different slabs each with a different stratigraphy of layers. How can I do this? I've edited the footprint so that it looks like there are two distinct floor boundaries but when I go to select the floor in order to edit the type, the entire floor, or both "pieces" get selected and I can't seem to just edit one piece...

I have tried 2 methods of generating a parapet cap:
1 - Creating a wall style with the sweep.
2 - Added a host sweep.
The problem is that using either method or a combination of both methods doesn't always work. I still end up with some caps that don't miter correctly even after editing. Sometimes, different intersections will miter and others won't.

I would like to create a family component using the wall foundation bearing footing as a template. I cannot find the file where the templates are located. I tried using the structural footing template but it would not give me the same flexibility the wall foundation bearing footing template does.

I am trying to create a sloped wall by creating a mass in-place. First I draw a line on a surface at a pre-determined level that I've set up in elevation. Then I offset this line in the vertical plane. My next step is to offset this second line so that it is not directly above the original line, but offset in the horizontal plane. How do I change from a vertical to a horizontal offset? I’ve tried different work planes, but they all offset vertically.

I'm trying to create a Tiled Skirt (150x150mm) profile or pattern to be used as Wall Sweep. Is there anyway to create this profile as the Family Template: metric profile (wall hosted) only allow me to create a 2D profile.
I would prefer to avoid detail lines or Filled region to get the tiles shown as I need to schedule and quantify this element.

When I create the surface in conceptual mass and bring that in revit project and apply wall by face I see interior face of wall going exterior.
Can this be set in conceptual massing while creating surface so that when I apply wall by face interior face remains interior.

I am creating a folding door model and would like to use a parameter called EXERIOR WALL OFFSET. I have used this parameter before but am having trouble getting it to work within my family. The only difference is that I created one frame/jamb instead of 4 seperate profiles. The question is, why can't i get the jamb to move within the wall using the exterior wall offset parameter? It seems to move the sash/panels just fine but the jamb is constrainted somehow.

I have received some architectural models which were modeled in AutoCAD MEP and only have walls modeled as type Standard. Is there a way to transform Standard walls into cavity walls etc., giving wall makeup as you go - or do I have to re-model in order to get quality 2D cuts?

Having something very strange happen out of the blue.Have wall types like lightweight block (Component Priority = 300) and stud gyp walls (Component Priority = 500) suddenly cleaning up w/ each other.
Hasn't been happening before when base lines extend to each other, but suddenly on this new project they are.
I am expanding on my modeling w/ this project. I taken another step in 3D modeling w/ ACA and am extending walls vertically to multiple floors and referencing the base floor plan into (below) the base file of the second floor. Everything is working as I expected and set up EXCEPT for this one thing. Hard to point to this as the difference because I'm having this issue on the first floor....where the reference issue is not part of the equation.
Also, know there is a way for my lightweight block walls on the second floor to clean up/merge w/ lightweight block of the exterior walls being referenced in...but can't find where that "check box"/switch is. Found it many moons ago, but didn't need it then.

Any way to get a wall sweep that's set up in the type/structure properties to follow a wall if that walls profile has changed. For example, in the image below, I've split the wall and adjusted it's profile to create some cheesy angled parapet. How do i get my wall cap to follow along? I thought splitting it and changing it's height would work, but no. And if I change the profile without splitting the wall the wall cap just runs right through the wall, as if the profiel was never even changed.

I have to draw a bulkhead wall that connects to a full height wall and a gyp bd ceiling. This causes the entire end of the full height wall to skew in line with the butt joint above the ceiling level. I tried Wall Joins but all the options screw up the bottom half of the wall which needs to remain in line with the paired opposite. I also tried editing the sketch of the wall profile but Revit couldn't keep the elements joined. I tried trimming the two walls back together afterwards but the wall profile dominates and prevents a clean join above the ceiling.
Surely there's a way to have different kinds of joins at different heights?

When I try to change the length of a wall it grows at both end. How to grow at one end only?
When I change the wall type to one with a different thickness, I cannot control which face of the wall remains fixed and which face moves. eg: change from 130mm to 250mm screws up my room width. How do I do this?

I am trying to make a floorplan of my house in Revit 2013, but I am having an issue when it comes to one wall in my house. I have an opening in the Master Bedroom that leads to the bathroom. This wall has a weird arched-like opening in it and I have no clue how to make this in Revit. I have attached a sketch.
Also, my exterior walls are 7' tall but the interior walls start at 7' and go up to 8' once in the middle of the house and reduce back to 7". How does one set that up in Revit?
EDIT: May have made the image too small to see, but the top is not arched, it is actually half of a decagon.

I have a question about wall profiles. I want to make a profile on a wall so I can make Zinc Panels on the wall that are 10" X 20". I've attached a picture of what I'm going for. I'd like it to have a 1/2" spacing between them and with a joint depth of 1" and I'd like to do this is the wall type so that I can use this wall in multiple places rather than having it model-in-place. Anyway I have made a profile that is 1" X 10" so that it can become my panel profile. But when I go to add it to the wall as a wall sweep as I have seen people do I get hung up on how to make it tile up the wall and also I don't understand how to make the profile so that it is 20" wide. I have a screen shot of where I'm editing this too. Below is the link of the site.

I have a family that has over thirty types and I need to update a single parameter value across all types to be the same value. Is there a global way to perform this task instead of the current copy/paste/paste/paste method I am doing. I thought about exporting to a catalog and modifying the text file in Excel, but I lose my formula when I do that.
If this isn't possible, this would be a good wishlist item, Autodesk - where a family has global parameters that are consistent throughout the family, regardless of type.

Im working in Revit 2010. Im trying to set up a Steel RHS family/types based on a sweep, see attached. Loaded into the family and used in creating the sweep is a profile family with different RHS size types. Is it possible to change the sweeps profile type using a parameter from within RHS family types?
I assume its not possible (unlike driving a nested component using a family type parameter from within the project.)

I am creating a room tag with various family types. unlike creating other families when I am in the family editing and I click through other types it hides the objects that are only visible for the proper value. How do I do the same. Being that I have a few types its getting sort of hard to see with the different amount of texts.

I have built a family and added various types; I have then nested this into my final family and would like to change the nested family type dependant on the final family’s type. (Hope that makes sense). I can do all of this until I want to make a catalogue.
This is what I did:
-Made a family and added types.
-Made a new family.
-Bought in the 1st family.
-Selected the nested family and added a parameter called "Attachment".
This all works fine I can change the type of the nested family in the edit type dialog box. But I need to make a type catalogue and when I export the family types as a txt document the attachment parameter doesn’t appear. So how do I reference this?
I have attached the RFA & TXT files.
