Photoshop :: Where To Place Advanced Techniques
May 26, 2004
With the incredible amount of talent that exists on this site, with the "carded" pros and the guys who have been around the block and have hit every curb, it seems to me that a new forum catagory could be opened. "Tips from the Pros" or some such.
I know the Advanced area exists, and is rarely visited, and is good for those already 'advanced', but maybe something up front in the forum would help the average guy or gal. I've been doing digArt for about ten years or so, and there is not a day goes by, where I don't pick up something from someone else, new to the medium or not.

I have read and understood the Photomerge tool (and tried the process with the sample images that are in CS2). All this seems to be fine except for a couple of things...
1. To achieve 180 degrees I am going to need more than 3 images right? (overlapping each image by 15%-40%).
a. Can Photomerge in CS2 work with more than 3 images, or is 3 the maximum??
If 3 is the maximum, then it wouldn't be difficult to just increase the canvas width and add on? Or not? Or do 2 sets of 3 then hand stitch those together? What is the best process for achieving 180??
Also, I like to shoot just before sunset, usually. If I did a 180, say with the sun setting in the right hand side of the image, then panned to the left snapping as I go, I am obviously going to get different gradients of blue in the sky, (lighter sky to the right, a darker sky to the left)
Should I shoot in Manual or Aperture?
How will I get the tones in the sky to be seemless?. As long as I overlap by 15% - 40% all should be good?
What is the best process for achieving equal exposure in all shots?

What are some ways that people like to create cow leather, like the type you might find on cowboy boots? I've been searching for a good way to make a leather-looking tent.

I am taking photos of parts for a client. I've got a pretty good method down with correcting the originals to achieve the results I need. First here is the original. I'm using different color temp light sources, the walls of the photo box are slightly gray, and the table the parts are sitting on are white. So i'm trying to achieve the most accurate camera settings to get the original below:
After doing levels and exposure correction in PSD, I get what I want. I played around with the channel mixer and color balance to see if I can properly correct the object so it looks like gray steel, and not having that slight yellow/green tint to it.
The only way I could figure it out is to just turn off the hue saturation and it gives it a somewhat decent result as seen below: But suppose my object is made of gold, or has a piece of plastic on it that's red; if so, then turning off the saturation will not work.how I can use other controls in PSD to achieve a more accurate result?

Let's say you got a picture and you start editing it:
DesaturateAdd some noiseAdd some random dustAdd some vintage colorsSo you end up with a picture (let's say 1000x800px, 72dpi) that looks fine on your screen with 100% zoom. But you don't want to use this picture for a blog or something, you just want to print it. If you print it with 300dpi then most of the effects (noise, dust...) won't show on paper because the picture is printed around 25% of what you see on the screen.
Question:
Is there a technique so you can control whatever effects you add to your picture when the picture is going to be printed? I could resize the 72dpi picture after all effects applied around 400% and then print it but is resizing the best solution?

how I might go about applying an old style 3d stereoscopic effect onto an image? The effect doesn't have to actually function, is just required to give the effect of the kind of red and green cinema technique.

I am a 3d visualiser, who specialises in Architectural Visluals.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a plugin, or a way of realistically creating, the technique of a standard SLR filter, to a CGI image.
I have seen a couple of big companies who produce images that seem to have a distinct style, and it seems to be the colour levels either are too saturated or over colourfull, yet they are very good and a have a nice feel to the images.
I think they must use a lens filter type plugin, but i cant seem to find one on the net..

What is a good method to employ when using PS to draw facial features of an animal in this case. To be more clear, I know how to go about drawing the subject but would like some advice from those with experience on how to best draw out a figure in PS, such as techniques for getting curved lines that are not jagged, etc. Have found that the brush tool works well compared with the pencil tool, but I don't have much time in drawing out things in PS and would likle to hear what your techniques are basically for getting a nice looking drawing.

I've done a bit of photo retouching on faces before: removing skin blemishes, changing eye colour, etc. I've only ever made subtle changes though; I saw a before and after of a photo retouch job on a model that went into a magazine (can't find the link now) and the difference was staggering! Does any one know of a tutorial or reference guide that takes you through the techniques? I know it's a huge topic but I know my way round Photoshop and I'm keen to know the techniques rather than a step-by-step guide.

I am using Photoshop cs6. I purchased a template for magazine advertising purposes. The images have been taken out but there are custom designed objects (masked shapes) where I am supposed to place my images. When I attempt to place a photo into one of the shapes, using the Place Command, it does not work.
How can I place an image into one of the objects?

use alpha channels to get the selection, but for some reason the black background keeps messing me up.

Even tho I've been working with Adobe Photoshop since version 5.5 I still lack the knowledge of making more advanced paths. So far i can make simple paths by using the Pen tool, however i've come to a point where i wanna make a path looking like a tatoo, so i can use it in my webgraphics without having to worry about pixels getting smudgy when resizing.

What are some good tips/tricks for selecting multiple surfaces. I have a model that is composed of something like 1500 individual surfaces. I'd like to know if there is a way I can select only the "Top" surfaces, or edge surfaces (or alternatively if there is a way to select all surfaces that are visible from the Top view or side views). Something like selecting loops, and chaining when dealing with sketches would be useful.
What I'm trying to do is extract the upper most surfaces out of an imported collection of surfaces (its a cube-like shape, not organic or curves), and then use them to create a thickened solid. I don't want to spend the time making the 300 clicks necessary to get all the surfaces by holding <ctrl> (not to mention a wrong click without <ctrl> could send you back to square one).

My current system includes Windows XP (32bit) SP3 with 4 Gb Ram, ATIV4900 FirePro video card, Dell U2711 monitor (supports 10bit), Version 8.85.7.3 of the catalysts drivers.
I have enabled 10 bit within Catalyst and went to Preferences Performance to enable the 'Advanced" mode of OpenGL only to find it grayed out. I searched and read where others had had similar issues though most were on a 64 bit system. OpenGL version is 6.14.10.10795.
My computer is using the Dell provided driver for the U2711 monitor.I am also using the display port cable to drive the monitor at its native 2560 x 1440 resolution.

it's forbidden for me to post links till i post 5 messages. ok then, so here's the deal. i have a 10 seconds video clip with some folks dancing in it. i wanna put my friends heads as a still picture instead of original ones in the video. so bodies and whole video will keep moving but the heads will be still pictures.

I am a casual Photoshop user and a friend uses my computer to print photos. I want to set a new preset so that things like paper profile, size, orientation and transparency are set. What I am not sure about is the colour profile that is used in the advanced settings. Is this the printer/paper or monitor? I use a Spyder 4 Express to calibrate my monitor.

remove the majority of marks, white areas, improve the texture of the background, and the clothing & facial features (even colour).
Also the bike wheels have grungy white marks.
I am aware of, and have experience of using the clone tool, but for me it doesnt seem to work too well here (which may be down to my skill level)

I'm trying to figure out how to do the following:
Mouseover a slice -> Change visibility of some layers
When I 'save optimized' ImageReady is saving ALL the slices in the image, not the ones that require updating. So basically if I have N mouseovers, I have N versions of each slice, even though they are identical (with different filenames)
I only want certain slices to be updated during these mouseovers. How can I do this?

about advanced blending modes, it shows how to use the the "blend if this layer is " and "blend if layer underneath is.."
It starts with some basic textures, an eye and a clock and the result is a mix of these pictures with a clock where the eyeball is supposed to be.
how to use displacement maps, the crucial thing about this tutorial was that a the map was used on a green image which provided a very nice "closeup of a green leaf"-effect with streaks and lines.

I've got a background layer which is a solid colour, and the layer on top of that is a picture with some advanced blending done to it.
When I try to flatten, the picture just reverts to how the picture looked before the advanced blending was done.
I've tried collecting it all in a single layer with no luck. I've tried making a postscript of the PSD file but that bombs in distiller. I've tried combinations of other single-colour layers below.

I want to create a series of photomanipulated images that I would title "Be Extraordinary." Basically, I want every picture to be a picture of me doing some sort of extraordinary thing, leaning more towards sci-fi stuff. I already have an idea for one of me wielding a lightsaber, but after that, I've run out of ideas for anything I know how to do in Photoshop. I had an idea for me creating some sort of energy shield, but I simply don't know how to really create that effect in Photoshop.

Ive been using photoshop for a long time, and am familiar with batch processing. I have over 500 photos that I need to resize. Some are very tall and some are wide. Is there a way to make photoshop resize a image depending on what its aspect ratio is?
If I make an action with image size I can set width to 300px, which works fine for wide images. The tall images though are still to tall. If I do the same thing but instead specify height then alot of my images will be to wide. If I specify both height and width then my proportions will get messed up. Any ideas? I have to do this alot, and with ever increase number of images. Im sure someone else has solved this problem before.

I am using Photoshop CS6. I have a question about Photoshop command Place.(File- Place) . Here are some pictures below. It shows the problem.
I opened the PSD file that has a green circle(picture 1) and using Place command to import other PSD file that has a red circle(picture2). Those 2 PSD files are same size, same canvas size, 1024x1024. So it should place the red circle precisely on the green circle, but as you can see, if I import the red circle PSD into Green circle PSD, Place command won't place the red circle pensively on the green circle. There is a gap between those 2 circles.(Picture3) It's really frustrating, because I have to move the red circle layer manually to place it just onto the green circle.
This command "Place" isn't reliable, so usually I don't use this command, and use Duplicate layer or group to import contents of other PSD, but if Place command can import other PSD file without this gap problem, I will use it because it's much faster than duplicating.
Do you know why and how to place those 2 files without the gap? Is it a glitch? I should not use Place command to import other PSD file?
