Photoshop :: Texture Art For Video Games
Jul 15, 2007
I love doing web devlopment/design, so I'll continue on that, but I also want to get into texture art for video games.
I did a general search in Amazon, and found a good deal of books - but many are using Photoshop 7 and I get the feeling that the techniques in said book are just as old.
What I wouldn't give to have the time to properly pursue a BA in Graphic Art.... My dream job would be a web developer/graphic artist for a major label game developer.

I'm trying to alter a games texture images. The images are in PNG format with transparent backgrounds with a size of 128 x 128. I would like to increase this to 256 x 256.
Now, I know that enlarging an image like that is frowned upon because of the lose in quality considering PS has to pretty much guess at the color and placement of those pixels.
I realize that I wont be able to simply press a buttons a BAM I have a game with twice the graphics. I know I'll have to do some altering and touch up but I'm hoping for some input on how to do this. Here, I'll upload an example.

I don't mean use a video as a texture on say a square. I mean how like in this video, the texture is applied on the collapsing parts.

I've been working on a new website and came up with something pretty clean/simple which I really like (so far anyways). I was just getting it ready to show to the client, and I ran into some trouble. Every time I go to export it (I've tried restarting it a few times to see if it helped, didn't...this is save for web btw) I get these waves of color where there shouldn't be any. Check out this link to see what i mean. I'm curious if anybody knows why this is happening, because I've tried playing with all my export settings and I haven't gotten very far. I've tried flattening all my background layers which are involved with the color, still nothing.

If it would be possible to make a working scoreboard with PS and if not what process or program do they usually make those in?
My son is thinking of doing live webcast of games and would like to get a scoreboard that is onscreen and can be updated to tell score, inning, teams outs etc.

So, i would like to become a Graphic Designing or atleast keep it as a hobby. More likely, i would like to design characters for games, in the beginning 2d sketches and why not 3d models. So, my first question is, what do I have to learn first to become a decent graphic designer, how to start, and what should i focus on?
My second question relates to Paint.NET. So, i've been experimenting with making sprites of images that already exist, by taking parts of them and putting them together, and changing colours and stuff. But now that i've tried making sprites of my own, i've got some problems of making a starting black and white sketch. I've been using the lines and curves tool but the curves are hard IMO to use. I would wanna know if i could copy somehow curves and reverse them, ill give you an example of why I want to do it.The head of the sprite would be cooler, if both right and left side would be symmetric.

Maybe I am just missing something but I am only able to record when I play any game when it is in a windowed mode, no matter the size, but does not record any game that is in a full screen mode. No matter if I select a specific part of the screen it or default full screen to record it will just record the background not the game. Also if I try to force the screen capture to the game specific it will try to switch to it then back to the screen capture menu with nothing recorded or changed.
I am using VideoStudio x5 pro version 15.1.0.34
Win8 64-bit
i7-3770k @3.5
ASUS sabertooth z77 mobo
8GB DDR3
Radeon HD 6970

For my 3D scene, I have to use a texture file on the floor. If I use the only file, than it looks really boring and below par. What I want is, I want to generate some (around 6-8) texture files within the original texture file - so the colors of all the texture files remain same but only the texture varies.Likewise there are more than 500 texture files and I just can't do them manually. Is there any way out to do this in Photoshop?

I have a lava texture and a ground texture. I'd like to be able to make some cracks on the ground texture that would show through the lava texture below it. Something like a cracked mud look. I would be using this for a game I'm making form some terrain textures. Are there any plugins that would aid in making these transparent cracks and perhaps even add depth to the cracks?
I guess a spider web where the spider was on crack would be something I'm looking for. Similar to the following image:

I recently purchased Video Studio Pro X3 - and after going through the knowledge base and product read me, I have been unable to find an answer to the following problem I have:
PROBLEM:
I have a number of videos (HD 1080p) that I have recorded. Each video is on average 50 minutes in length - what I want to do it to be able to do is to slice this video into 10 x 5 minute videos (based on topics discussed in the video), (so essentially clip the video into these segments and edit each one) and then when producing the video file - actually create 10 separate video files (all with editing in place) instead of one single large file.
As far as I have been able to work out, I need to go through the whole file, clip relevant sections, edit them, and then save project. I then need to go trim the saved file 10 times, to extract each time the single 5 minute video I want to create. This is a fairly manual and time consuming process, hence my hope that I can create 10 files based on the clips I have made in the larger 50 minute file in one go.
as I have 30 videos to edit, so looking for ways to save time!

when I upload a video to You Tube, I get a warning message that my video and audio are out of synch. Once uploaded, the video plays just fine, looks great. But I don't know why I get the warning when I upload. Video clip and audio track are the same length.

I have a cylindrical object that I want to map a brick wall texture to.
How is this achieved?
I use a CAD program to make my basic object, then I rotate it (as best as I can) to achieve perspective. Then, I do a screen grab, and prepare to use the object in photoshop as my reference.
I also have a sample of the brick (actually stone) pattern that I want to sample.

I'm working on a design that seems a bit bland so I thought about adding some texture to the background, though I dont want it to interfere with the foreground elements like text, and images.
1. I can reduce the transparency, what else might I do? Fade it out?
2. Just curious to hear some examples of when you might use a texture for a background of an image? Do you only do it for very specific reasons?.

I have a project open in a 3d view to paint on a 3d mesh. Everything is fine until I save, close, and reopen. When I open the file to resume I can no longer paint on the model. I can still go to the UV (flat) view for any of the materials on the model but I can't paint on the mesh in 3d view.
I can open a new 3d layer, re-import the mesh, save and reapply all the previously painted texture to the new mesh layer and keep working but this seems not a very efficient work-flow.
I don't think many 3d pros actually use this piece of PS for texturing. This is the first time I've tried the 3d functionality of PS so I may just be overlooking something.

I have some jpeg files that I would like to use as textures. As I understand it the Patterns folder is the same as the Textures so I am assuming this is where I need to place Texture files. However, I cannot seem to find any instruction regarding the use of .jpegs as textures/patterns.
Do, I just drag (from downloads) and drop the .jpegs into the Patterns folder like I would with a .pat file?I read a thread that said it's a pretty difficult process to convert/change a jpeg into a pat file ..is that true? Well, so how to make a pat outta a jpeg?

I'm looking to recreate the texture of this floor plan and its surroundings. I've had a few attempts at applying the texture through 'Pattern Overlay', though i'm not sure which blend mode to use? Or altogether if there's another way to achieve the texture? The aim is for it to be very light so it doesn't detract from the main plan of the building.

Currently developing important apps for education. Looking for great styles to imitate. Must be fast but nice.
We have seen Phineas and pherb style drawing and it looks very quick. We were wondering how you do the background you can see in the following link.
[URL]....
Especially the brown brick as we can't do that in flash as there are no textures. The rest I suppose in just drawn and then lots of cut and pasting.
And the same question for plants versus zombies - those terrains and grass. Must be some sort of brush on PS.

I don't get it: my old CS2 has PS with texture filter that actually is there, while my PS5 app shows an unselectable "texture" in filters. WHAT IS WITH THAT? I feel ripped - off now that I need to use it in this project.
