Photoshop :: Camera Raw - Apply Auto Tone Adjustments
Apr 22, 2013
In camera raw, "apply auto tone adjustments" option in the preferences dialog is not same with the "auto" button on the basic panel, isn't it? Both of them control the same sliders, are there any relationship between them?

I imported tiff images into Lightroom 4 that were scanned by DigMyPics.com. The color of the images look good on the Windows 7 photo viewer. It looks horrible in Lightroom 4. My monitor is callibrated, the import develop setting is set to "none" , the box is unchecked "apply auto tone adjustments".I think that the windows viewer is showing the accurate color of the scan and LR is not. I don't think DigMyPics would send this awful color.

There is an apply auto tone adjustments checkbox in preferences, but it does not work properly. After checking it, some photos still require to click on auto button on the basic panel.

Yes, I'm probably the only person on the planet that wants this, but I liked how the Auto Tone auto adjusted the Exposure slider (ONLY!) and left all the other sliders at zero in the Lightroom 4 beta.
Is there a way to write a preset that returns that behavior?

Trying to color correct skin tones using curves in CMYK, but seem to either have false cyan reading via eyedropper or something just as strange is at hand.
The end result when trying to keep cyan at a third of yellow's count - as in Lee Varis Skin book - is too much red.
This is truly baffling as how can Photoshop give such a wrong reading or what am I doing wrong?

I have a lot of pictures taken under restricted library conditions where lighting is wysiwyg. A lot of the pics end up with an annoying gradation of tone caused by the poor lighting (and my poor photography skills), such as the attached image.
I use PSE 9 on a Mac.
How can I apply a uniform tone to images like this in PSE? For example, in the attached sample, the left-hand portion has a nice strong tone, while the right side is washed out. How can I create a nice unformity across the entire image?

While editing two very similar photos and using the CS6 auto-tone command, one of the photos photoshop was able to truly fix up while the other barely changed. Here is the example:
Photo A was very blue and dark; the auto-tone command magically fixed it up to have nice color variation in the rock and made it brighter. Here is the before/after:
On the other hand, photo B didn't work out the same way; the auto-tone command barely did anything, even though I thought both photos looked to have very similar problems (blue, dark, etc). Here are the links to the full original photo A and photo B in case they are useful...
how can I achieve on photo B the same effect that auto-tone did for photo A! Is there any way to find out what adjustments auto-tone made?

I'm using CS4 photoshop on my iMac 2008. When I try to apply image adjustments like 'posterize' or 'Brightness/Contrast' or 'Levels' to my image, I can adjust the settings in each dialog box, and I see the changes on my image because the 'Preview' box is checked. But when I click 'OK', the image reverts to its original and no changes are applied to the image.
I started out by importing a .jpg into photoshop. I've tried working on this .jpg, and I've also converted to Photoshop file format .psd, and still the same problem occurs. The original image had colour, but I converted it to grayscale. I also tried not converting to grayscale, and still the same problem. I am trying to make the image high contrast, with only black and white (no grey).
The same problem also occurs when I apply my adjustments on adjustment layers. Here I am able to modify each adjustment layer. The image changes and looks the way I want. But when I go to save the image, no matter what format I save as (.jpg, .psd, or .tif) the resulting image has none of the adjustments. It's still the original.

In Camera Raw, the Tone Curve Channel selection is disabled. How can I enable it to allow me to adjust specific colors in Camera Raw?
I’m using Photoshop CS5, Camera Raw version 6.7.0.339 on a Windows Vista 64 bit system, and my camera is a Nikon D90.

Having just loaded 10,000+ scanned negatives in LR 4.3, I am applying Auto Tone as a starting point for development settings. I have selected all images in Grid View, right-clicked to Develop Settings...Auto Tone. I can then go to the Develop page and Auto Tone is shown in every images History.the Auto button is still visible and I can click on it and get different [generally better] settings.
Is there a reason why Auto Tone applied to multiple photos produces different development settings from when it is applied individually to each photo?

is there any way to prevent lightroom 4 to apply auto settings to the image after it is returned from treatment in a plugin? Typically, I would launch SFX or other plugins from LR4 by specifying "submit a copy of the image with LR adjustments". When finished, the result image is returned to LR4 and auto settings are applied to it, as if it was freshly imported. This is very annoying. I have every time to reset all settings manually (exposure, whites, blacks, etc) one by one. Is there a way to treat plugin returns differently from importing images from a disk/card?

I've just created a map with various county boundaries. I now need to fill in the counties with various shades of gray, with no two neighboring counties sharing the same shade. I've been going about it in a sort of trial and error fashion, but I can't ever seem to get it right. Is there a way that Photoshop could possibly fill it in for me? Sort of an auto-swatch application thing?

I have recently purchased a new camera (Canon 600D) and am shooting in RAW+jpg.
I make many on-camera adjustments (exposure, creative effects etc) which apply to the JPG fine. Is there a way to apply these to the RAW image also (within LR) without manually changing all the settings using the 'develop' module? For example, can I right-click on a RAW image and select 'Apply camera settings' or something along those lines?
On a side note, is there a way to ask lightroom to simply use the JPG version rather than the RAW version (on an individual photo basis)? Lightroom as I currently have it set up uses teh JPG only as a preview.
Not sure if it is relevent but I am using the latest Lightroom 3.x on Vista.

Looking forward to this update because i use a Fuji X pro 1 and I had read that lightroom 4.4 now supports this camera and sensor.
However after updating all I get in the Lens adjustment under Fuji is the Fuji x100 which has been their for some time. The exif info is showing the correct camera and lens used etc.
I have tried uninstalling and then manually removing any left over files and folders with no luck.
Do i have to install support for this camera as an addon?
Also if i look in the lightroom folder Camera profiles/camera it only lists Canon, Nikon and Sony

I've got a weird problem with several (not all) objects in my scene. No matter if Max 2012 or 2013. It's impossible to apply any transform as soon as the auto key button is pressed. The objects are totally locked. With auto key button inactive, transformations are possible. Key filters are active.
The only workaround so far is to group those objects or link them to a dummy or detach all elements into a new object and delete the original one. Any newly created objects can be animated either.

I'm trying to import images shot on a Canon 650d using two different lenses, the (according to EXIF displayed by LR) "EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II" (kit) lens and an "EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II". Both lenses and the camera should be newly supported with this RC.
When I go to develop module and tick "activate lens corrections" (translating, I'm using the German version) nothing happens. No corrections are applied. I need to additionally change "Manufacturer" from "none" to "Canon", then the right lens is automatically found and the settings are applied.
However, if I save this as an import-standard (press Alt+"set standard"), just this lens is remembered: All imported images get corrected using the last selected lens profile. So if I manually correct an image taken on the 18-55mm lens and save this as default, at the next import all images, including those taken on the 55-250mm lens, get corrected using the 18-55mm profile (at least, that's what LR is showing me.)
It was my understanding that the import preset should be specific not only to the camera, but also to the lens the respective image was shot with.

how to change the default settings in Camera Calibration (ALT changes the Reset to Set Default) and from what I can find, any newly imported RAWs will have these defaults applied. how do I apply these defaults to images already imported?
Also, what I specifically want to change is the Profile: Adobe Standard to Profile:Camera Landscape (for example) and apply that to all the images I already have shot with this specific camera body. So, two questions: Does setting the defaults include the Profile or is it only the "Shadows, Primary Red, Green, Blue" that gets saved as a new default and can these changes only be applied to newly imported RAWs?

We have a bunch of shots taken using natural light - the shots all have completely different exposure and white balance adjustments.
Now that the shots feel like they've been shot at the same time of day (and on the same day) we'd like to start adjusting the white balance accross multiple shots - but use the current white balance/exposure from each individual shot as the starting point - not reset the adjustments.
Kind of like baking the current settings or making adjustments on top of current adjustments - or make new adjustments relative to the current adjustments.

I understand the benefit of shooting camera raw and I like the adjustments you can make without effecting the photo itself. The one thing I can't get used to is the limiting workflow in raw that allows you to undo only one change. Being a long time user of Photoshop I'm spoiled by all the image changes I'm allowed to make in combination with one another and the ability to back out of all or some of them.
I'm I missing something in the raw workflow? I wasn't sure if this should be posted in the Photoshop, Bridge or Raw forum. If any of you know of a forum that discuss's this sort of stuff,

I was using these tool on a lot of images, because they often seemed to vastly improve them, making the colors pop on otherwise somewhat dull ones, and getting rid of unwanted color casts..
Later though I noticed that it is often at the cost of burning out hightlights in some areas beyond salvation.I also find shadow /highlight sometimes does this also.
Then I tried to protect some small areas with a mask before proceeding, but it seems that I can't find information on just painting a mask, but only videos with much more complex adjustment such as the Russel Crow or Lynda ones with maintaing hair detail while superimposing images, which is way beyond what I need in these cases.
If I try the wand to select and inverse I get unnatural looking divisions. Is it a matter of feathering to the right extent?
