Photoshop :: BIG Files Opening Slow
Oct 13, 2008
Working with big files...1.5 gig that have 30 to 50 layers and many FX on them.
They are taking a LONG time to open.
In considering updating to a new CPU soon....what affects this problem the most...
CPU
Video card and its amount of RAM
System RAM
Something I am not thinking about?

We have several stations set up globally in various offices using Photoshop CS...
Image files, no matter how small the file is... even a single small JPG takes a good 10-15 seconds to open (win xp) and we frequently need to work with hundreds of images. This seems to be a major problem and from what I find on Google, not uncommon... Code:

I have a new Mac (2x2.4GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon, 12GB Ram, OS X 10.8.2) and the latest version of Photoshop (13.0.4) installed.Besides the general slower behaviour sometimes, opening and saving files with 80+ layers is unacceptably slow..This is like going back 10 years compared to CS5.5

I'm working with a 2.73G PSB file that will be printed in a large format printer and eventually end up as a vinyl wrap for a cargo trailer. I've never worked with a Photoshop document this large but from what I've read, PSB's can be up to 4G.
When I open the file, photoshop goes through the trouble of loading the file (the progress bar loads all the way) but when it trys to actually open the document, I get a message from Windows that the program has encountered a problem and has to be closed. At an early stage of working on the document, when the file was less intense with layers and blending modes, the file would open but crash when saving.
The funny thing is that my co-worker runs a MAC with lower specs than mine and the file opens and seems to run stably. I'm thinking it could be a RAM issue but according to CC spec's my machine should work fine?
On my machine, I'm running:
Windows 7 - Service Pack1
Intel Core i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz 1.60
8.00 GB (2.98 GB usable)
32 Bit
I've also read that to access your full RAM's capability you have to be running 64 bit but I'm not sure about this?

I have just installed AutoCAD Map 3D 2012 on a Windows 7 box and have a couple of issues I can't resolve. First, how do you disable the InfoCenter? I have tried several things with no luck. Second, opening a DWG file over the network seems very slow, what could cause this? We are moving from AutoCad Map 3D 2010 to 2012 and for the moment the we a running AutoCAD Map 3D 2012 in "Try Me".

I set up for a client of mine a new file server using samba.
Everything is working OK except the browsing/opening of files directly from the network drive, using both X4 amd X5 versions on windows XP and 7.

I am using corel X6 64 on a Dell optiplex 9010 intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz. 8.00GB of RAM. Its taking about 1-2 minutes to copy/cut/open a file/save a file or even publish to PDF. On the same machine Same circumstances but different User i have no problem. I have to use my user because its connected to my email and at this company i cant change that. I have researched many forums and its not color styles or object styles. It does it on a new file with only one object created. I got a new computer signed on to my user account and the problem persists.

I have had PSP X5 since shortly after it came out. I rarely use it because it is very confusing after working in v9 for many years. I have finally decide I just need to jump in with both feet & do this. I have 2 questions.
My first is why is X5 so slow in opening up. I have never had any version of PSP to be so slow opening. The second is I make new customized tool bars that work for me & save the workspace, however when I open it up the new tool bars are there but not in the position I saved the.

Autocad LT 2014 works fine when one dwg is open, but after opening a second dwg autocad becomes 'selectively sluggish'. By 'sluggish' I mean panning and zooming are choppy, and switching between paperspace layouts is painfully slow. By 'selective' I mean that the program is slow only when working on the second drawing; I can toggle over to the first dwg that was opened and normal functionality resumes. These are not big files, there are not underlays or xrefs or crazy hatches/dynamic blocks/etc. It happens when working locally or off of the file server.
The only way I can have two drawings open and work normally is to open two instances of Autocad LT 2014 and have a drawing open in each -- then, I can switch back and forth as usual, with normal speeds.

We recently migrated our fileshare project drawings from Window Server 2003 to Window Server 2008-R2 x64...We are experiencing slowness opening or only right click button on more dwg on XP Pro 32/64bit workstation.
Problem repeats if you try to copy many dwg files from windows explorer, right button properties..i have already disabled "validate digital signatures and display special icons" on each machine .There isn't any slowness problem opening files on other application e.g.. Office.

Is there a way to increase the access time so printing is faster?
I have AutoCAD 2013 and access drawings over VPN (6 meg pipe).
Both opening the drawings and especially printing them take a very long time.
It takes about 8 seconds to open drawings, due to all the modules loading on the bottom-left of AutoCAD. Printing takes even longer than opening the drawings.
Is there a setting I can change to speed-up access time?

I've been using PS CS4 since release and upgraded to CS6 Master Collection last year.Since my OS broke down some weeks ago (RAM broke), i gave Photoshop CC a try. At the same time I moved in new rooms and couldnt get my hands on the DVD of my CS6 resting somewhere at home...So I tried CC.
Right now im using it with some big files. Filesize is between 2GB and 7,5 GB max. (all PSB)Photoshop seem to run fast in the very beginning, but since a few days it's so unbelievable slow that I can't work properly. if it is caused by the growing files or some other issue with my machine.
The files contain a large amount of layers and Masks, nearly 280 layers in the biggest file. (mostly with masks)The images are 50 x 70 cm big @ 300dpi.
When I try to make some brush-strokes on a layer-mask in the biggest file it takes 5-20 seconds for the brush to draw... I couldnt figure out why.And its not so much pretending on the brush-size as you may expect... even very small brushes (2-10 px) show this issue from time to time.
Also switching on and off masks (gradient maps, selective color or leves) takes ages to be displayed, sometimes more than 3 or 4 seconds. The same with panning around in the picture, zooming in and out or moving layers. It's nearly impossible to work on these files in time.never seen this on CS6.
Now I wonder if there's something wrong with PS or the OS. But: I've never been working with files this big before. In march I worked on some 5GB files with 150-200 layers in CS6, but it worked like a charm.
SystemSpecs:
I7 3930k (3,8 GHz)
Asus P9X79 Deluxe
64GB DDR3 1600Mhz Kingston HyperX
GTX 570
2x Corsair Force GT3 SSD
Wacom Intous 5 m Touch (I have some issues with the touch from time to time)
WIN 7 Ultimate 64
all systemupdates
newest drivers
PS CC
System and PS are running on the first SSD, scratch is on the second. Both are set to be used by PS.RAM is allocated by 79% to PS, cache is set to 5 or 6, protocol-objects are set to 70. I also tried different cache-sizes from 128k to 1024k, but it didn't work a lot. When I open the largest file, PS takes 20-23 GB of RAM.

The problem is that opening files is painfully slow - having read about the issue with network printers (which I don't have) I have deleted everything listed under printers and re-installed the only printer that I have (which is locally attached via USB, but I deleted it in case Adobe thought is was a network printer). I have tried to create a generic printer (as recommended by Mr Joslin to jangel2 uRL.... but the installation failed and no additional printers were visible in control panel/printers.
I am running Windows 7 on a Dell desktop, with plenty of memory etc. I have a number of external hard drives, and have turned all these on so Photoshop can find them in case it's looking, but this made no difference.

I have recently moved from PS CS5 to CS6 and have noticed what seems to be an increase in the amount of time it takes to save large files. At the moment I am working with a roughly 8GB .psb and to do a save takes about 20 minutes. I have had to disable the new autosave features, otherwise it just takes far too long.
CS5 managed to save larger files, more quickly and with less memory available to it. Looking at system resources while Photoshop is trying to save, it is not using its full allocation of RAM specified in performance preferences and there is still space free on the primary scratch disc. The processor is barely being used and disc activity is minimal (Photoshop might be writing at 4mb/s max, often not at all though according to Windows).
I am finding the new layer filtering system invaluable so would rather not go back to CS5. I can do to speed up the saving process?

I have:
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.0 GHz.
3 Gig's Ram.
32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium.
Photoshop CS3 Extended.
It takes 20 Seconds+ to open a jpg or to create a new file even 50x50 pixels. Loading the actual program is very quick though.
I have a network printer, but I set Microsoft XPS Document Writer as my default.(Its a local printer)
I Run PS CS3 as admin and with compatability for xp sp2.

Photoshop C3 has been loading even the smallest of photo files very slowly -- about 10-15 seconds for one.
it might be a networked printer, but the printer on this computer is NOT networked.
I'm running Windows XP, latest update, with 3 gig of RAM. And we have deleted and reloaded the Photoshop program and updated it to make sure it's not a file goober in the program.

My 8 core 2.8 GHz Mac Pro has 10 GB RAM and a blank 100 GB scratch disk. Photoshop is always quick. Has been for years. Suddenly today, Photoshop is slow like molasses to open & save files. Lots of progress bars and wait cursors. Everything else on the Mac is fine. It boots quickly & normally, and other apps are happy. My boot drive, a clean installed Mountain Lion system, says S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified. In Activity Monitor, a process with ID # 0, Kernel Task, was using 700 to 800 MB RAM, while another process, mds, with ID # 44, is using 350 MB RAM.
I should add that I booted from a backup system and its copy of Photoshop was also doing the same thing. In addition, a high level troubleshooter on Apple Discussions informed me that my present level of 500 MB RAM for Kernel Task is normal. So all I know is Photoshop is suddenly slow.

I have just upgraded from PSE10 to PSE12 and now when I use the Slide show (full screen) in organizer with Fujifilm Raw files it take about a minute and a half to load up and same again when you zoom in. Is there any way of speeding this up in PSE12? It was slow in PSE10, but it did take over a minute in total.

I'm a user of CS5, on a MacPro.
I was so disappointed with the amazing slow response when trying to use the Mixer Brushes; fine when using small files, suitable for web, but when working with larger files intended for large printing, it was painful!! Have the people at Adobe sorted the problem out with CS6?

My main user folder on the iMac is set to be shared (read/write, including all enclosed files) with my MacBook Pro. The job is a series of one-page InDesign files (they are newspaper advertisements). The IDD files contain a series of Illustrator files with linked PSD files. The idea is that we can both work on the .idd and .ai files in the same folder at the same time.
It's all working fine EXCEPT that whenever an .ai file is opened on the MacBook, Illustrator doesn't know where the linked PSD files are. We can update the link, but when the .ai file is then opened on the iMac and saved, the same thing happens the next time it is opened on the Macbook.
I don't want to embed the PSD files into the .ai files as sometimes I have to modify them and they can be linked to up to 20 .ai files.
G5 iMac OSX 10.7.5 / Macbook Pro OSX 10.8.2 / networked via FireWire cable / file sharing on, laptop user has Administrator status, all files are read/write, permissions include all enclosed files / CS6

I've got a lot of scenes that have become exceedingly slow to save and load. Like often taking 10 to 20 minutes to save. With looming deadlines this is becoming really desperate! I've tried merging into a new scene, running scripts to clean out notetracks etc. Even after deleting every object and material, and resetting all render settings, the file is still inexplicably slow. See attached example.

I just recently upgraded from WinXP64 to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and everything is good… aside from the fact that everytime I save the files, it is realy slow
I never had this issue before (although when I think about it, I used to work on another Win7 station a few months ago and I had the same issue)
I think the reason is OS related as everytime I click on save, it “re-creates” the file from scratch… This is not much of a problem on small files… but I have scenes that are over 500MB each and it takes forever to save everytime (not that the scene unreliability is not enough!!!)

I am working on six very similar map documents. They all are moderately complex with layering, drop shadows, and some placed raster files. I have linked rather than embedded the big tif raster files.
The confusing thing is that some of the illustrator files save in 2 seconds, and some of the files save in 2 minutes.I have compared all the settings, and I don't see what I'm doing different on the ones that take a long time to save. All big placed files are linked, not embedded.
The only clue showing a difference is that the files that are taking a long time to save are about 200mb in size. The files that are saving quickly are about 1mb in size.
