I have a .3ds file I import
After the import it shows the differnt meshes, but underneath each mesh it has the same material name.
If i click on the material tab, it show a whole bunh of materials, but when i click them nothing gets selected, only when i click the 'default' material the whole model gets selected
is there away to change the individual mesh's materials manually,
I am usually fine with changin the materials by going to visibility settings- imports and changing the materials.
However I have a file where I cannot change the material no matter what I do. I tried importing it as a family, I tried exploding the dwg, I tried setting the layers to 'color by layer'. It is beyond me
There is another file where I can only change some layers but not the others.
I opened a new 3dsMax file and Import/Merge an object in it. When I opened the "Material Editor" Window of the new file, it is empty.
How can I get the material of the merged object? Is there a way to import/merge an object and their materials as well?
I am able to easily import sanitary sewer pipe and structure information from existing GIS information using the import wizard. I do have one issue that I can't figure out how to fix: even though I match the material field in the GIS shapefile to the material field in the import wizard, the material for the imported pipe network defaults to concrete pipe. I have tried updating the shapefile and the part in Part Builder so that the material information matches exactly, but it still happens. I can work around this by selecting "Swap Part" for each pipe and then selecting the correct pipe material and diameter, but this can be tedious when dealing with a lot of pipes.

We work with prototype buildings that can have material color variations from site to site. For example, a brick version of a prototype can have several different brick palettes from which to choose.
I'm thinking fo creating generically-named materials in the prototype set - Brick-Base and Brick-Accent, for example - with the idea that the specific material data for the function can be changed for each site-specific building.
While this certainly can be done manually, is there a way to import material data - and not just rendering appearance data but all of the data - into a model, either from another model or better yet, from some sort of data file? Ideally you would only import the materials for which you need to change the data.
I have a problem trying to import objects to load their correct material properties. The textures are all there but I have to reset there specular properties everytime. Even if I import the same object straight after I export it with the materials properly set, I still have to reset them all over again. Is there a setting somewhere like in Customize that I can change to make the objects maintain their properties on import?

I am running 2008 and am having a problem using Xrefs in my scene. When I change the material in the Xref file, the parent scene that references the xref doesn't update the material. If I change the Xref geometry it will update it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf I need to change the material of all parts in an assembly I find it convenient to do this in the BOM. In the 'parts only' view I add the material column, change the first one and just drag it down like in Excel.
There are however some parts where the material is greyed-out (see attached image) and I cannot change them in to something else. I already traced this to parts which are present in multiple different sub-assemblies. I guess that's also the reason for the blueish/red icon instead of a normal part icon.
If I open one of the sub-assemblies the part is fine and I can change the material.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am creating a carpet tile family that is sized at 18"x36". When I load the image from the manufacture into the material I give it the 18"x36" size, but get something different in the family and project. See image attached.
I want the red lines to be at the bottom of the family.
I tried to change the material image size to 36x36" and it only scales in the y direction. I also tried to offset the image so it fills the family area and that doesn't seem to work either.
I understand how to change material by family type but how can I change object subcategory by family type? Is this possible?

I received a rather large assembly file from a client that was done in Pro E. I was wondering if it is possible to change the entire assembly from Default material to steel without having to go into each individual part and changing its material manually (which could take several hours) I am using INV 2012 Pro with SP1 installed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with the Bolted Connection tool in inventor. When I use it to place fasteners in my assembly everything works fine, i can select the material I want, etc... The problem is whenever I need to change something in it, the fasteners changes to the first one in the list that appears when you click the ... button, which means that I always get the wrong fasteners. The workaround we found was to click the ... button again for all the fasterners, and this has to be done in the right order (start to end) otherwise I will get again the wrong fasteners and to select the fasteners again.
One more thing, I'd like to know if it is possible to have a more user-friendly way to change the bolts in bolted connection. I would like it to be like when you import a component from the content center, with that dialog box. As for now, I have to choose the bolts with their part number while when I import them with the content center, I have all set the key values.
I wish I can open my general assembly BOM and set the proper Materials to my all my parts after migration from 2012 release.
But I cannot change Material for the some custom part in the assembly BOM in the Parts Only tab. Parts refusing to change a Material have special symbol and I guess it means “promoted assembly” – no info regarding these symbols.
I can change any Material in Structured and Model Data tabs but it is extremely inconvenient for the big assembly.

I have similar subassemblies built in similar way as you can see fro video, but one is treated as promoted assembly and other as promoted part, the question is what possible difference between those is?
The attached part has some bad work features on it, but I don't care about that (easy fix). It also contains a rule that simply changes the material from "P AND O" (pickles & oiled) to "201 S/S", for some reason the faulty work geometery causes this rule to throw an "unspecified error". If you delete the bad work geometry the rule runs fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having a very strange issue that appears in the Materials editor within Revit 2013 Update Release 3. If I change a surface or cut hatch pattern within the editor, and then attempt to close out of the editor, go to a different material, or apply the change, the hatch dialog pops right back up again, as if I never closed it. I have found two ways to get out of this obnoxious loop:
1. Use the 'esc' key to back out of the materials dialog (unfortunately no changes are saved).
2. Change the color of the hatch - this allows for the changes to be applied etc.
I've tried resetting the UI and reinstalling Revit to no avail.

correct process for animating a Material color change using AutoKey and the Curve Editor.
Right now, I am only able to crudely manipulate the color change by setting the material color change while the AutoKey is active.
The problem is that I am unable to control the speed/time at which the color change actually transpires in the scene.
So far, the only solution I have found, is to set the color change hundreds of frames after the point at which I want the color change to actually occur.
Normally, I would go into the curve editor and and manipulate the keys for the color change to slow or speed up the transition, and to control the exact timing.
However, even though I am able to locate the color change key(s) in the Curve Editor, I either do not know how to properly manipulate them, or I don't know what keys I actually want to manipulate.
I am accustomed to sliding keys left and right and using null keys to hold a key frame (in the this case the color prior to change, which is grey, and then the color after the change, which is fuchsia. however sliding keys around in the curve editor, when I have the "fuschia" key(s) selected (I misspelled the name, so in the file it is "fuschia" not "fuchsia"), does not seem to affect the actually timing of the color change.
FYI, the material that I am attempting to animate is the "fuschia" material in the Compact Material Editor.
