AutoCAD Inventor :: Material Change Bolted Connection
Feb 4, 2011
I have a problem with the Bolted Connection tool in inventor. When I use it to place fasteners in my assembly everything works fine, i can select the material I want, etc... The problem is whenever I need to change something in it, the fasteners changes to the first one in the list that appears when you click the ... button, which means that I always get the wrong fasteners. The workaround we found was to click the ... button again for all the fasterners, and this has to be done in the right order (start to end) otherwise I will get again the wrong fasteners and to select the fasteners again.
One more thing, I'd like to know if it is possible to have a more user-friendly way to change the bolts in bolted connection. I would like it to be like when you import a component from the content center, with that dialog box. As for now, I have to choose the bolts with their part number while when I import them with the content center, I have all set the key values.

I've created my own library of bolts to include multiple material selections for each bolt. This works fine. But everytime I update my bolted connection, whether i do it manually or automatic it changes my material selection for the bolt to the first material listed in my bolt libaray table. This is also true for the nuts as well. Is there something that i have done wrong to make this happen?

I've copied Standard CC libraries to read/write libraries and modified the tables. Mostly fasteners. I've prefixed the family name and family description with our company name. When I "place from content center", it's easy to see our content because the families are prefixed with our company name. However, when I use bolted connection, some of the families do not show our family name as a prefix like "place from content center" does. People constantly pick the wrong fasteners. They select fasteners without our Item number, etc. Then, they need to delete the fastener and try again. I can't seem to get bolted connection to show some fasteners with the company name prefix like Place from CC does. However, some families do show it.

Is it possible to break my bolted connection, so that i can change the information given by inventor in the BOM? Its always grayed out and i can`t seems to find a way to make it "ungrayed".
I could change it directly on the .idw but me and my project leader would like to not go on that road. Our teams are seperated in to two. Ones in charge of modeling & the other is in charge of the presentation. We would like to give, as much as possible, not to much leeway on those in charge of the presentation.

I`m joining pipes together using the nut/bolt/washer method using constraints in assembly then using pattern feature.I`ve not used the bolted connection generator before so i am looking for some feedback on whether this is a better method to use.Is there any advantage to using the bolted connection generator over the placement of nuts/bolts/washer with constraints and then using pattern feature?

I've lost my Bolted Connection Templates... you know, the pre-defined bolt-washer-nut selections available for re-use at the bottom of the Bolted Connection dialoge box.
Did I lose or over-write a file? What file do my Bolted Connection Templates live in?

One of my parts had "Invalid origin/axis" problems and I got all my visible aketches fixed. But I have what I call "ghost" sketches left from bolted connection updates, erasures etc. I can get rid of the visible points but cannot access the sketches to erase them.
The red + sign showing irritates me and I want rid of it.
I have attached the file, 2014 version, some of the adaptive features may not come thru or they may work better on another computer, who would know.

Bolted Connection
Placement By hole
Select Start Plane
Select Existing Hole
Select Termination
Receive blank stare from Inventor.
It doesn't change to match the diameter of the hole (which is a hole feature in both parts) and it doesn't bring up a list of fasteners. Everything is still highlighted in the assembly. It just won't do anything with it.

I am using the calculation tab in the bolted connection generator. Is the maximal tangent force (Ft) the total force of plates in shear or per fastener? It appears to be the total force because changing the number of bolts changes the results.
I have been running different configurations due to a failure in a test cell and the numbers don’t seem correct. The calculation indicates that the fastener would fail at a much lower force than it actually is.

When I use the DA to generate a bolted joint that utilizes flat head cap screws (English, 82 deg), the countersunk hole is not large enough and it leaves the heads sticking out slightly proud of the surface. Most of the time when I use FHCS fasteners, the heads must be below flush.
I went into the Clearance.xls file and increased the diameter values for the 82 degree holes. However, it doesn't appear that the DA actually pulls its hole data from this file. I saved the XLS file, closed it, closed IV, retarted IV, deleted the old DA assembly and started over. And I still got the same undersized hole.
However, I did verify that if I just place a HOLE on that point and set the hole as countersunk and clearance for that size of fastener, it will use the hole size that I specified in Clearance.xls.

Bolted connection, clevis pin and bearing are all not working for me. I can go through the steps of selecting the start plane and then the circular reference and the termination point. That is all successful but the bolt doesn't appear, whether I use a clevis pin or a bearing, I get the same result.
Working with sheet metal or FrameMaker all work fine. My content center shows all the bolts, clevis pins and bearings. The content center seems to be working fine. I'm using inventor 2011.

I've been setting up all our standard faster in the content center. I'm now trying to test the Bolted Connection feature, So far all is well, I can utilize our Nuts and Bolts however I can't select our Washers on the "Select Fastener" dialogue box. When I filter by our Standard it shows nothing, When I filter by All, it shows a whole bunch of washers (But not all of the ones included in content center). What determines whether a fastener will be displayed in the "Select Fastener" dialogue box?

I have a problem with the Bolted Conection function when using derived parts created from a multi-body part.
I created a multi-body part in which I pit some holes with the hole function (clearence hole, through, M16, normal). After that I generate all the compontents. In the generated asembly I tried to add a bolted connection (placement by hole). Normaly after selecting the start-plane and the hole it discovered patterns (if exist). Now, after selecting start plane no holes are found.

In my workflow i always use a wireframe to do my design. I always try to put all the information necessary on that wireframe so that i don`t get myself lost in my own designing. That includes also the position of the holes that will be put on my structure.
To ensure that i have, later-on, no error. I try not to do anything adaptive. To make my holes without projecting those points, i use bolted connection. Before, when i was using that function, for the same sketch layout of a bolt pattern that i made, only on one member those holes where made. So i was forced each and every time to use that function as much as i had members to put those holes in.
Now with the new patch, i was happy, for some reason the holes where appearing to the other members. But Some time later, i realized that even though the holes where made, It wasn`t at the same sizes!!!

Myself and my coworkers have noticed that some times bolted connections will be missing a bolt. The bolt in question will appear again if you edit the bolted connection and hit ok and let it rebuild. But then another bolt in a different bolted connection will disappear. I just went back and forth between updating two sets of bolted connections and each time I updated one a bolt in the other disappeared. It's almost like there is a limit to how many bolts the assembly will show at once. The assemblies in question don't always have large numbers of bolts and other hardware though.
I'm running Inventor 2013 SP2 running Nvidia Driver Release 276.42 [8.17.12.7642], which is the last recommended driver. I've also run newer/older drives with no difference.

I've been using inventor for past 3 yrs. I just love it.
1. BOLTED CONNECTION: whenever i perform a bolted connection with option "CONCENTRIC", though it creates the holes in all the locations but places fasteners only in the first hole(refer attached picture). I'll have to copy and paste it individually for all other holes then, which is quite a hassle. It works fine with all other options i.e BY HOLES, POINTS etc.
2. While creating a new part, I usually makes the referance planes in the center of the part which makes it easier to assemble by planes in a large assembly. For this purpose, i have to project the planes and then get my sketch symetric to the planes during every part creation. As I've worked in other softwares too, where in sketch it automatically alows to use the referance planes for sketching, so we don't have to project it in order to use it.

I'm trying out Inventor 2013 and I have modelled 2 parts. 1 hollow cone with a collar on each end and a disk to fit between 2 instances of that cone positioned in opposite directions in my assembly.
I am having difficulty making a bolted connection between the 3 parts through any of the holes. It only seems to go through one of the collars and the central disk but I can't get the generator to select the correct termination surface on the collar of the second cone. Is this not possible?

I've got a strange situation regarding the bolted connection generator. For some background, I made another post a while back about editing the hole sizes for Flat Head Cap Screws so that the heads were below flush. That thread is here:
[URL]
Basically, I increased the countersink diameters Clearance.xls and then found that the Design Accelerator doesn't use that spreadsheet for its data source. More research led me to this file:
C:UsersPublicDocumentsAutodeskInventor 2013Design DataDesign AcceleratorTablesHolesAnsi Unified Screw Threads.xml
So I edited the diameters in this file and tested the design accelerator and everything was great. [I kept a backup of the original...]
Since then, another thing that has bothered me was counterbore numbers for socket head cap screws. The Cbore diameters don't match the tools that we have and the depths are always right on size. i.e. for a 1/4" SHCS, the bore is 7/16" diam x 0.250" deep. In reality our cbore tools are about 0.406 and we cut them about 0.265 deep to make sure the head is below flush.
I went in to these two XML files and edited them (and kept backups): Ansi Metric M Profile.xml Ansi Unified Screw Threads.xml
Everything seems to be cool, except for one scenario. When I create a counterbored joint for a metric SHCS, the cbore diameter is always 16.00 mm diameter and too deep, regardless of its size. I searched the XML file and what it's doing *does not* match the data in the XML file. I monkeyed around a little more and could not get the counterbores to come out right.
So at that point, I renamed all the files to restore my original backups to the "factory" ones. I assumed that I screwed up the formatting or something in the data table and I'd just try it again. However, even after I restored my backups and removed my edited files, the metric counterbores are messed up.
What I don't understand is that changing the file "Ansi Unified Screw Threads.xml" *did* update the holes for English screw joints. But does the DA pull data for metric joints from somewhere OTHER than "Ansi Metric M Profile.xml"? And if it does use this XML file, why isn't it working? The original data has been restored, but the behavior is not behaving correctly.

Is there a way of using design accelerator to rivet fix as you would with bolted connection ? I know that by initiating the bolted connection command there is no option to use rivet to complete the connection as is done with bolts. It would be great if rivets from the content centre could be somehow imported into the bolted connection component generator (or readily available) to add like bolted connection or if there are any 'workaround's' to produced similar results ?
