Mudbox :: PTEX Vector Displacement Map Used As A Stencil Or Stamp?
Jun 29, 2013
Can a PTEX vector displacement map be used as a stencil or stamp? If not, what's the workflow for going from a PTEX sculpt to a vector displacement texture (e.g. TIFF) that can be used as a stencil / sculpt.
The problem I'm experiencing is that I sculpted a plane with PTEX and exported a PTEX vector displacement map, however, when I go to the Image Browser to attempt to use it as a stencil or stamp the PTEX file does not show up. The only files I can see in the browser are TIFF, PNG, etc. If I change the Output Options > Map Type to from PTEX to Texture I get an error: "At least on target model has been set up for PTEX. You must select PTEX format(*.ptx) for maps extracted using this target."

Just apply a new material, this doesn't work at all as it is always a ptex material. Trying to do an unwrap doesn't work as it says it is a ptex model. I can't save or load textures on the model as it is now a ptex material.
How am I supposed to remove ptex from this model? Mud 2012 obviously.

I'm working with Maya 2013 and Mudbox 2013, and try to use PTEX painting in order to paint my character.
Anyway, for some reason, I'm getting visible coloring seams and distortion along them when trying to color with a stencil/stamp over some regions on the model.
Usually, texture gets distorted around extruded regions on my model, and if that's the case - the whole benefit of painting seamless texture goes out of the window.
I tried increasing/decreasing PTEX resolution, also searched in this forum and tried also edge bleed reduction/increase - unsuccessfully in all. Seams are very visible and texture is distorted.
Now, maybe it's something that is related to the natural bounds of the PTEX technology, but maybe it's just some obvious solution I'm just completely missing.
My work process is importing models from Maya by using Send To Mudbox option, then setting up PTEX with the proper resolution and starting to work.

If I don't set up UVs in my model and instead use PTex painting in Mudbox, can I then export the model to OBJ with UVW maps? I would like to import the model to Octane render which imports OBJ files and their UVW mapping.
I have Mudbox 2009 and am contemplating downloading the 2012 demo to see if Ptex painting makes things easier for me, but it won't work if I can't then bring the painted model into Octane or into my license of Max 2011.

When I setup a model for ptex painting in mudbox, it's not properly using the surface derivatives of the mesh's faces. Thus the faces which are really small are getting the same size texel data as big ones. This obviously is bad because anything with small bevels and hard surface type work becomes incredibly problematic.

i have an obj with a layer in multiple channel, and when im increasing the ptex setup locally in some area, it seems to create artifacts in the Normalmap Channel. It looks like the mapping is broken only in this channel.

I'm having a problem trying to export a ptex paint layer to be used in another application.
For some reason when I export it, everything seems to work just fine, until get gets to calculating tangents and then it hangs forever on 99%... Every way I try saving the file, it does this. I can easily paint on my mesh, and save the project file, but I can't export the ptex file.
Deleting the mydocuments/mudbox folder which I did.
I'm using mudbox 2012 64bit on Win 7.

Is there a way I could wrap a stencil around the object ?
For instance.. on a cube.. I use the stencil, straight line to wax a hard surface.
But on the edges, it breaks because it projects from the front.
any way to wrap the stencil around the object so the line continues without breaking on the edges ?

Is there a way to apply a stencil to an entire model at once? if you wanted a lizard to have scales all over, uniformally, and then mask them out where you wanted, is there a way to do that in one step as opposed to painting over the stencil, rotating the model, painting over the stencil, etc.. etc..?

I modeled a female body and imported from 3DSMAX to mudbox to texture but now i'm having trouble on baking the displacement map in MUDBOX. I'm using tiff 32 bit floating,7 x 7k, with search distance of 4 (i believe it's a relative good number). My source model is step 0(with about 2 million faces) and the other is step 2(with aprox. 6 million faces). I'm using target to closest model, smoothing only the source and wht i get is this: a big black image with one or another gray dot.
I saw several tutorials about wht might be. I changed several times the search distance, and also tried to bake in max. Nothing seems to work. Mudbox keeps leving me with a blck image and max gives me something strange that works a little as a displacement map but it is totaly untileble. The two images attached are from mudbox. One as i get, and in the other i tried messing with levels in photoshop but it didn't work too.

I'm sculpting a portrait work and after generating the displacement map, the map itself automatically is displayed in the model. This is actually the second time I'm experienced this.
How can I disable this auto function without having to turn off the layer in the layer tab each and everytime mudbox generates the displacement map.

I thought I had this all working. And it did to an extent. When I plug a single displacement map into my standard lambert shader slot in maya, all works fine and dandy. However, as soon as I try to use multiple displacement maps, I am getting the problem that I had in the previous post, which is that the negative values are lost. I sort of understand why this is happening - that is when using a layered shader it uses alpha as luminance, and therefore the values don't go below zero, but I don't know what to do about it!? I have tried a network with set range etc but it just makes a mess. Any straightforward method of using multiple .exr files in a single shader for mental ray in maya?

We're experiencing some artefacts near UV seams on our baked displacement maps. We have a clean, multiple UV-tile model which is subdivided, sculpted etc. Baking uses subdivision method, smooth target mesh and UVs on (we render with prman). Edge bleed is default 2, anti aliasing to x2.
Then test the map out by bringing the target model back in, subdivide up to the corresponding level, and sculpt using maps. The artefacts are not everywhere, just on some UV boundaries in some areas, very strange. The UV boundaries are clean quads, same spacing, good use of UV space. My concern is its in sporadic regions, and not globally over all seams.

I am sculpting a bust and want to use Projection Stamp image to paint the diffuse map. However, the image is not showing in the viewport.
My model has 6 levels with 6+ million polygons. At none of the levels the image shows in viewport.
I'm using Nvidia GTX 560 Ti, 1G
Windows 7 Pro 64bits.
cpu i7 860, 2.8 ghz
16 GB rams.
However, when I start with the mudbox standard base head mesh, then choosing Stencil image, the image shows in the viewport. But not with my 6+ million bust and the image is On it's not hidden.
Is there anyway I can optimize Mudbox to display the image in viewport?

The image below has been touched up (i have cleaned up the lines with the "line/curve tool"), and even redrawn some lines. As you can see, the background is white. How to use the background (all the white) as a "stencil". this way i can use a bold brush to "airbrush" some shading and shadows onto her body, without having to worry about it spraying outside of the lines. i know it can be done, i have done it myself in fact, i just can't remember how. I have the plug-in called "isolate lineart", just FYI.

I'm trying to do a black stencil over a photo. To do a black layer is easy. To do transparent shapes in that layer thus creating a stencil is easy as well. But here is my challenge...
Creating Letter Stencils. See-through transparent letters, so the picture is seen only through the letters... I don't seem to be able to choose Transparent Letters to write on the black canvas.

Maybe 2.8 has this option already, ive already downloaded just not installed it. i plan on doing it when ive finished this little personal project im working on.
Im having trouble finding anyway to assign a layer as a layer mask.
this all started because i want to create a gray scale bump map of my texture map. so i duplicated it and decompose it into separate RGB gryscale layers and the alpha layer.
problem is, the alpha is no longer the alpha. what i ideally would like, is to combine the alpha with which ever combination of the channels i decide to use. then paste that back into my original file as the bump map.... so far not having luck

i need to make a 'stencil' of sorts that is a solid 1.5mm thick disk (about 30mm in diameter) with 200um holes (separated by 500um - i.e. 500um distance between each hole)
Things I've tried:I tried to make a 2D footprint of this stencil and then extrude the entire thing. My computer crashed! i guess the ram needed for this is too much.
I made a 200um diameter circle, extruded it into a 1.5mm 'pillar', arrayed these pillars, then placed a 30mm diameter, 1.5mm high solid disk around the array and made a block. When i exported it to an stl format, it didn't recognize the design as a disk with holes, but as an array of pillars.
I tried to make the disk first. draw one 200um circle and presspull it to form one hole - but i can't seem to array that hole in this disk!! If I have to make an array of these circles and presspull them one at a time, i'll die before i finish the stencil.

When i go to filters-decor i see both the Stencil chrome and Stencil carve options grayed out.
I of course made sure no alpha channel is present , and my picture is black and white ( jpg).
Is there a way to get this filter to work, or do i need to go to photoshop ?

i'm a complete noob on PS... Using CS4 and i'm trying to make a stencil using threshold method. I've been following a tutorial by melissaclifton if you know it but am having problems. She says to duplicate the layer, drag a solid colour between them, and then cut away the background using pen tool.
I cut the image, after inversing it, and in the thumbnail it looks ok, but in the main view nothinjg happens. I expected to be able to see the solid colour backgroud as sooon as I hit delete. Cutting the image also caused me a few problems!
Does anyone know any other stencil and/ or simple layer cutting tutorials? I've searched a lot and am starting to lose patience.. Thought it would be simple (maybe it is!).
