Maya :: Changing History Order

I am aware we can change the order of history in maya. I have a specific situation i d like to solve and basically is this:
Say i have a 1x1 rectangle. Now i apply to it, say, 2 split edge rings. And then i apply a mesh/transfer attributes, so that this rectangle will basically snap to a chosen surface. If i edit now the edge rings positions, everything is cool and will work as expected, because these rings have precedence over the transfer attribute tool. So far so good. If i now add a new edge ring to that rectangle, as you are already seeing, will not be taken into account by the transfer attributes tool, as it lays after in the history tree. So my question is:
How will i put this last edge ring node before the transf. attrib tool? This would be really great for my topo workflow. So graphically, so that it is more clear i want this:
POLY---RING1---RING2---TRANSF.ATTRIB.---RING3
CHANGE TO
POLY---RING1---RING2---RING3---TRANSF.ATTRIB.
I suppose the natural way of doing it would be in the hypergraph... I gave it a shot, but i couldnt really do it. I studied the connections in hypergraph, but i couldnt even replicate.... Things like WORLD that need to be connected would show greyed out on the other side so i could not connect anything. What is weird is that this are the connections maya does, but if i try, it shows greyed out.

I am having a problem with Maya 2013 (Mac) crashing when I delete history. I have had this happen a few times in the past but only if I go a long time without deleting the history. I do it on a more regular basis now but this past week it has been doing it every time. I created a button on my shelf as a short cut for this and when I was first having the problem I found that if I just do it from the edit drop down then it worked fine...at first. Now it is crashing even when I do it from there. One instance I saved before I deleted the history and it crashed when I deleted. Then I restarted my computer and the first time I deleted it worked but next time it crashed. I have both service packs, I'm not sure why it is doing this all of a sudden.

Whenever I make new objects like box, cylinder etc, I can't edit their properties like subdivisions, etc as if their history got deleted even though I don't delete it. They are made with pre-deleted history..

There seem to be some errors in the code for Modify > Convert > Displacement to Polygons with History. My scene uses an animated displacement map, coming from an image sequence. The displacement works as advertised, but I keep getting execution errors. Here is the code for the offending expression, which was created silently when I issued the conversion command:

The only way I can stop the constant error messages is to comment out the code or disable expression evaluation.
The error messages are annoying, but I can live with that. The real problem comes when I try to select keyframes in the timeline. I shift-drag across keys to select them, and they highlight at first, but then the highlighting immediately goes away. I am forced to use the Dope Sheet instead. Disabling expressions doesn't work, so I don't know if this problem is related to the displacement expression or not.
Displacement in Maya has a very bad reputation, and based on my experience, it's well-deserved. Another issue I have is that after conversion with history, multiple shape and transform nodes are visible in the Outliner, and it is not clear what's going on. The documentation for this feature is only two lines long, and does not explain anything. Apparently there is a pre-displacement shape and a post-displacement shape in the scene, sort of like how nCloth has an input and output mesh. But with displacement w/ history, users get no guidance on how all of this is supposed to work.

I created a very simple two poly object and then deleted my construction history and now I cannot seem to create a new polygon in the scene unless I turn off interactive creation.
If I choose create>sphere etc the little sign that says drag on grid appears but when I do nothing happens. I made a new scene and did the same thing and I don't have the same problem so Im not sure why in this particular scene.

I would like to know how to delete only certain parts of history but keeping its effects. For example, a cube has a smooth polygon, bevel, and blend shape history. How do I delete only the bevel history but at the same time keeping the bevel? Don't tell me to do the bevel first, delete history, then smooth and blend shape.

Is there a way to open or convert the byte ordering so that GIMP opens myimages in little endian order? Right now my images are being read MSBfirst, which is not useful at all. Im using FITS images.I am definitely new to gimp

Setting a stroke profile (variable line width) on a closed shape changes the stroke width from narrow to wide. I would like to have the "wide" width in a different place and a "narrow" width somewhere else. I guess a way to do this would be to change the node orders of the closed shape?

Within the drawing title block we have a 'Text' of type 'Custom Properties - Model' which pulls in a custom iprop from a model which is the models finished weight. This is a common way of auto populating title box entries.
The problem is that the sheet populates the text with the info related to the first viewport placed upon the drawing.
Whilst fine when planned for properly, I quite often encounter upon large multisheet detail drawings, that a user when detailing an IAM, will have forgotten to put the IAM view down first, especially later in the drawing series where the IAM is not required and the user is detailing IPT's.
What I am looking for is a way to change which viewport the border properties are related to ideally, so that if a user has forgotten to place the IAM but has placed 20 IPT's down, I could place an IAM outside of the maximum area, as the 21st object but fool Inventor into thinking this was the first viewport placed down, thus populating the border info correctly.
I don't know of a way to do this currently, either with current Inventor functionality, or by programmatic approach - our current fix is to have the user create another drawing sheet, place the IAM outside the maximum area, copy all his IPT viewports across from the first sheet, then delete the first sheet. Is it possible to change the object order of placed viewports with less disruption?

I am trying to learn layers and layer masks. I loaded an image, than control J to duplicate it. I then added a layer mask. Everything good so far. I then went to filters chose a blur. Then went to brushes with black as my foreground color, I just wanted to brush away the blur, and got an error message. "could not use the history brush because the history state does not have a corresponding layer."

Everytime I try to use my history brush, that error pops up and I have no clue why. If I try to just open a blank document and use the brush it does not give me this error and I can "use" the brush but you cant see anything on the project.
so when this error happens im trying to do a project and say I place a file(picture) into the project and this is the very first thing I do. I place it, then I size the image down some. I then make a new layer to use the brush for behind the picture and then this is when I get the error. I have no clue what is wrong

when modeling the movement or scale tool is so small I find it difficult to grab one of the arrows without super zooming in and moving the camera around alot.

I have an object that I want to rotate different.... not sure how to explain, it, but you can tell what I want by looking at the screenshot attached. I want the rotate to align with the cylinder. I've tried reset transformations, and the home key to move the pivot. I've also tried the different settings for the rotate settings and nothing is changing this angle. Is there a way to manually set this?

No matter what changes I make in the UV texture editor, the texture on my model doesn't change (with the colors I put on it until I finalized the UV map, it would be pretty obvious). But nothing happens. Move UVs, Rotate UVs, Scale UVs--does not change the texture on the model.
Am I missing something? This all used to work just fine. Is it a setting change? Is this something caused by brining a Maya2010 file into 2011?

I have a scene with an object with multiple blend shape targets. I'm not using custom attributes to control these targets (since doing that makes the Blend Shape Editor nonfunctional). I'm just directly changing the value in the channel box's 'Input' section, under 'blendShape1'. By typing in the number directly, I can get it to work with any number I want, but if I try the Maya Cntrl-drag method to interactively change the number, I'm stuck between values of 0 and 1. Is there any way to change the min and max of these attributes? Its strange that I can type in whatever I want and it will work, but cntrl-dragging does not work that way.

I have been working on a head model on and off for a couple of days to practice extrusion methods, I have been working with smooth shade. When I went back to it yesterday I came across this problem - Anytime I went to extrude/bride/append/soften normals etc my model the part I was extruding would turn to wire frame and an unrelated part of the head would change to wire frame also. I am mirroring the mesh down the middle; sometimes the mirrored half is changed to wire frame also, sometimes not.
As I didn't know how to fix the issue I reverted to an earlier save I had made before the affected areas had been built up. Now I have nearly finished getting back to the same point I was at yesterday I'm coming across the same problem.

Here I have several concentric squares in an uninterrupted stack.I moved the topmost (small orange) one vertically.I then went to the Alignment panel, selected all the squares and clicked on the one I moved.Then I clicked on Vertical Distribute Center.
The right hand picture shows what happened.One of the squares (that big orange one) near the bottom of the stack shot up so that its centre was above the centre of the topmost one in the stack.The centres are evenly distributed but why is the stacking order not controlling the order in which the squares are arranged?
Fortunately the positioning of that big orange square was easy to correct, but something tells me this is not the way things are supposed to happen.Seemingly this does not always happen. I have tried the method on several stacks. Some were o.k., others showed similar behaviour to the above.

I'm not sure what I did to make this happen or how to change it back, but for some reason when I change the size of an object/line it changes the stroke weight as well. (For example, if I drew an ellipse with stroke weight 2 pt, and then increased the size the stroke weight would be 2.856 pt or some such number instead of 2 pt.) How to change this back?

The attached files are two sprockets. The original part has 30 teeth. I need 34 teeth.
The MODIFIED part has one of my attempts at making 34 teeth. I have tried the following with the same error dialog box (see below):
1. Edit Sketch_6 (associated with Extrusion1) by deleting all but one of the teeth lines (2 arcs and 2 lines that make up a tooth) and making a circular pattern of 34.
2. Same circular pattern, except this time I "Close the Loop" (right-click on one of the teeth line segments > Close Loop > click on all the segments until the loop is closed).
3. Same circular pattern, except this time change the resulting patterned lines into construction lines, trace these lines with arcs and lines of my own (not construction lines), and close the loop on my own lines.
When each of the 3 attempts failed, I tried deleting Extrusion1 and making a new Extrusion feature from Sketch_6. I cannot select what I want in Sketch_6 in order to make the teeth.
I'm at the point where I'm just going to take the dimensions from the circular pattern sketch of 34 teeth, delete Extrusion1 and Sketch_6, and make my own sketch and extrusion.
For the future, I really would like to know - why is it so difficult to alter features like this? Yes, I understand that Sketch_6 is not fully constrained, and on top of this I am not privy to how it was generated in the first place (this is a part file from a vendor). But it does not strike me as something overly complicated for the Extrusion feature to recognize a change in its associated sketch. This is not the first time I have encountered something like this.

I'm using CS4. I have multiple layers of text and I want each one to have a different drop shadow effect. When I try to chnge the settings of one layer's shadow, all the layers change. Is there a way to stop this?
