Lightroom :: Export To JPG - Limit File Size Vs Resize To Fit

Feb 22, 2012

I take a large number of event images and the usual client request for images being sent to the press is image size rather than resolution, dimensions or other requirements.

Clearly in LR3 if the client has requested 3MB jpg the easy option is to after processing take my Canon 5d mkii RAW file and just hit export to max 3MB jpg.

My question is is it better - ie image quality better - to export by resizing longest edge to approx 3000 px and exporting to jpg which results in a similar file size, though different pixel dimensions? Or are they effectively the same?

Lightroom :: Export And File Size Limit

May 3, 2012

i'm currently using LR 4.0 and found a problem with file export.

I have two tiff files:
Tiff 1: 283MB, full resolution ( 2336 x 3504 )
Tiff 2: 233MB, full resolution ( 2336 x 3504 )

Export witht: 574 x 1000 image width
JPG 1: 168kb
JPG 2: 194kb
Both jpegs have 600px x 887px (fram with mogrify plugin#) and 100%jpg quality.

Whe I set a limit to file size of 154kb, I receive following:
JPG 1: 102kb
JPG 2: with error ( couldn't create jpg which fit's the file size limit of 154kb )

If I export the second tiff manually with 90% jpg quality and no filesize, I get:
JPG 1: 114kb
JPG 2: 135kb

So it seems that the "limit file size" isn't really working. Also it seems that Valus between 92 and 100 ends in: same as 100.

Lightroom :: How To Limit File Size Of Photos Selected In LR3 For Photomerge In PS5

Nov 8, 2011

Is there a simple way to limit the file size of the photos selected in LR3 for a photomerge in PS5?

I have found that without limiting the size, the panoramas generated are very large - 1GB or greater.

I've found an work around by opening the photos in Bridge and then in Camera Raw where I can reduce the file size before using PS5 for photomerge.  After I've done this, it's a bit of a hassle to get the panorama back into LR3.  The benefit of this approach is that it speeds up the processing significantly and downstream with any subsequent processing since the files are just large and not ginormus.

If this isn't possible, this seems like a good idea for LR4.

VideoStudio :: Pro X5 - 4GB File Size Limit On NAS?

Apr 7, 2012

I've been a long-time VideoStudio user and recently installed the trial of X5 (my last purchased version was X2, but, it's time for an upgrade ). VS X5 is installed on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit PC. If I capture to an internal NTFS drive, the tapes capture as a single ~19 GB AVI file; however, if I capture to my Linux NAS server with ReiserFS file system, VS breaks the captured files into 4GB chunks and I end up with five files per tape. There is no 4GB file limit on ResierFS. I have copied several 25+ GB blue-ray files to the NAS with no problem. ReiserFS has an 8TB file size limit. Captured through another video editing program, I do not have this problem. It appears that VS X5 assumes a 4GB limit on network devices (or, at least, on my Linux - ReiserFS NAS).

Photoshop :: File Size Limit On Photomerge?

Aug 20, 2008

Im getting not enough memory (RAM) error messages attempting to photomerge or auto-align large images. Any other filter or tool that I need works just fine on these size files. Neither tweaking CS3 preferences (as has been discussed rather thoroughly on this forum) nor toggling the 3 GB switch under XP (my PC has 4 GB ram and >200 GB scratch) helped. Given optimal settings, what are the upper dimensions that I might reasonably expect to photomerge, either under XP or Vista 64? If its not unheard of to photomerge and auto align huge files, Id upgrade my system. Otherwise, Ill plan the upgrade and wait for CS4.

Lightroom :: How To Limit Size Of Catalog Preview Folder

Sep 15, 2013

I have a 180GB SSD, which I specifically bought, to make Lightroom (4.4) faster and to store 1:1 previews. Initially, I set up Lightroom catalog (containing 18221 images) to never delete 1:1 previews and stored the previews in a high quality mode. This quickly fill up my SSD. I would like to set it up to store as many previews as it can while leaving atleast, say 20GB, free on SSD. The alternative, which is to discard 1:1 previews after 30 days or so, is not really acceptable to me.

Photoshop :: Batch Process To Resize Image But Limit...

Jul 5, 2009

I'm trying to create an Action that will resize images to a constant and absolute width (600px), and save as a JPEG with a filesize of less than 160kb.I've tried Image>Image size... and Save for web with only partial sucess. Image Size does not allow you to set the filesize as a parameter - you can only set the dimensions and resolution and hope that it comes out under 160kb.Save for Web does have an optimise feature, which does work for an individual image, but not for a batch. The optimisation is done by adjusting the quality of the jpeg, but when you save this as an action, it does not record this as "optimise the image for 160kb". Instead it saves just the quality % used when recording the action. Any other images processed by that action will just be saved at that %, regardless of their filesize. Is there a way to write the action so that Save for Web will dynamically optimise each image? I'm using CS3 Extended.

Lightroom :: Export Resize Possibly Broken

Jan 13, 2014

I have a set of images that fit within 1400x1050.  I want them to fit within 1024x768.  As I have done before, I set the export directory, choose 1024x768 as the export size, highlight all of the images and click export.  The first image in the set shows what iis going wrong.  It starts out as 680x1050 and finishes as 680x1050.  Clearly this is wrong - it is not resizing.

some of the images ARE corectly resized.  Random ones are not.

Lightroom :: 5.3 Export With Resize Option Not Resizing?

Dec 17, 2013

Just updated my LR to 5.3 from the CC and noticed a weird problem that I never encountered before in LR4 or 5.x (before 5.3 that is). I usually export pictures from RAW format to either TIFF or JPG (100% quality) and depending on purpose I use batch resizing, e.g. 1080 pixels on short edge ... well that whole Resize setting gets ignored by LR 5.3! It still exports full size (full RAW size in this case) into JPG or TIFF, but it won't resize .

EDIT:
I found out that I checked the "Don't enlarge" box in Export dialog under Resizing, that's when resizing was not working. After I unchecked it then it works fine, but still what does that have to do with anything if we are talking about downsampling images from 5184x3456 pixels to 1620x1080 ...

Paint.NET :: Resize Images And Print Size Fields On Resize Dialogue

The actual sizes the program resizes the images to differ though - some look to be about right, whereas some come out much larger, but they all show the dimensions that I inserted in the canvas size box.
I'm sure I've done this before and this hasn't happened?

Illustrator :: Why Is There A Limit To PNG Export Image Sizes

This came to my attention around the CS4 era, but I've recently noticed still remains with CS6 - but just why is there a limit as to what image sizes we can export PNG files at [AKA around the 8000x8000 area at 400dpi for me]?

Surely as long as we have the computing power [and RAM] than we should be able to export beyond the 10000/400dpi pixels range [or does it depend on the computer]?

Photoshop :: CS6 Save For Web Image Size Limit (Retina)

Apr 5, 2013

I have been designing for a lot of mobile sites these days, in particular: iphone retina display (640w).  Most of the time these designs can be long in the tooth with the height of these documents - exceeding 8000 pixels at times.  I noticed that 8000 pixels is the threshold limit for the "save for web" export.  Anything greater than 8000 pixels will be downgraded in quality on retina devices by scaling the image.  The jpg will still be the correct height and width, but when viewed on an iphone, you can easily see the degradation. Images and text are blurry. This is no bueno when trying to show a client what their site will look like on an iphone.

A preference to be changed?  Am I missing something to get the full quality of my design comp in order to preserve retina display quality?
