Lightroom :: Correcting Imported File Names (way To Bulk Rename Back To Original File Names)
Dec 18, 2011
I accidentally included a file rename when I just imported a batch of several hundred pictures. I violated a rule that I teach my own Lightroom students, and that is to look carefully at the import panel choices before proceeding.
Â
How can I correct this so that the files are named as they originally were? I know how to easily fix the filenames in Windows (using a tool called BulkRename, for example), but then I'd have to "find" each image one-by-one and correctly point to the renamed version. I tried selecting all the images and then using F2 to rename, but none of the templates allow deleting a portion of the filename.
Â
P.S. Here is an example of what I mean:
Â
ON CARD:
IMG_0001.NEF
...
IMG_0300.NEF
Â
WHAT I RENAMED TO ACCIDENTALLY:
IMG_0001 {shot by John Doe}.NEF
...
IMG_0300 {shot by John Doe}.NEF

by mistake I imported (moved) several AVI and MPEG videos into a specific folder that I inteded to use as backup for one of my relatives.
Â
Problem is that my original folders, where I stored these videos, along with specific names regarding genre and/or subject were left intact, with nothing inside them.
Â
I am trying to find a way to "revert" the import process and send those files back to where they belong.

Is it possible in Lightroom to automatically append/prepend directory names in the file path into the file name itself? Example:
Â
DirectoryA Sub-directoryB filename.jpg (original file name)
Â
==>Â
Â
DirectoryA Sub-directoryB DirectoryA_Sub-directoryB_filename.jpg (concatenated new file name)
Â
If this is not natively possible within Lightroom, any plug-in that delivers this functionality?

I have been using Lightroom since V. 1. I have noticed that many of my file names have been renamed in LR (now V5.3) by changing the filename from "XXX_yyyy.NEF" to "XXX_yyyy-2.NEF". IF I look in the folder where the images are stored, both versions of the file are there. I went into LR and deleted the "-2" version and re-imported the original files. In some cases this worked and the LR file now has the original name. In some other cases, LR re-named on import and appended the "-2" to the file name. I checked and it turned out there were other files with the same name on the disk and in the LR catalogue, so I understand why these files were renamed. In other cases, however, there is no other file in LR with the same name. Yet, when I try to delete the "-2" file in LR and re-import the original file (as I did earlier), LR again renames my file by appending the "-2" suffix to the file name. It does not copy the file, it actually renames the file in the folder where it is stored. I cannot understand why the file name is being changed in this case.
Â
why LR is doing this and how can I prevent it?I am running LR under 64-bit Win 7 with 12 GB RAM, the problem seems to have occurred primarily with Nikon D200 RAW (.NEF) files.

For example, let's say I have a file on a hard drive labeled 2012. Inside that file there are three folders with photos and they are labeled Phoenix, Seattle, Portland. Is there a way to Import these folders at one time and keep the names, or will they all come into Lightroom only as 2012?

I have a hard drive published service configured in Publishing Manager that creates JPGs of any images that are placed into that published service. For the most part all the settings I specify on that service are adhered to when I "publish now". However one setting appears to be ignored and that is File Naming | Rename To:.Â
Â
In the configuration of that option in Publishing Manager I have the rename to option set to "Filename - Sequence". When this option is set the example text it states at the bottom of file naming displays what I expect it be on output. However, when I "publish now" the file exports but with the original file name of the photo.  Let me explain further. Typically when I've fully processed the photo I use the Lightroom file rename option to rename the file from the orginal import name to something more descriptive.
Â
This seems to work fine with both the information in LR and the actual file name being correctly displayed. Even when I select the file for publishing the example file name show matches the new name after rename. However, the actual file generated always as the original imported file name. This happens for all files.
Â
I'm using LR 5.2 on Windows 8.1.Â

I imported 900 RAW images from my desktop into Lightroom, edited them, renamed the filename, and exported them into JPGs. Since I no longer needed the RAW images on my desktop I moved them over to an external hard drive. So now the images are still visible in my Lightroom catalog, but there is no photo to back it up since I moved the original files to the external hard drive. After realizing that I exported the images at 150 dpi instead of 300 dpi I need to re-export the images from lightroon at the proper resolution. But since I moved the originals to the external hard drive there is no photo to back it up in lightroom anymore. So I went to locate the files by clicking on the "?" but since I renamed the file when I exported them, the original filename on the external hard drive is now different from the filename in the catalog. Is the only solution to locate the file one by one? Is there any way I can do them all at once even though the original filename is different from the filename in my lightoom catalog? The original filename is still listed in the metadata, but since the originals are missing it can't change it back.Â

I'm in the process of creating 3D points (as an overlay) on some laser scanned data (using RiScan, it's just 3d dimensional data, with a northing, easting and RL) and unfortunately the only export option is to export to .dxf... Which is fine but when I export, the information has the point ID as the layer name.
I am aiming at getting this data into another program to analyse and it needs the point ID or name to be my annotation, as opposed to the layer.
So what I need is a way of converting the names of each individual points layer, to the point ID.

I'm looking to create a script to batch rename a number of artboards.
Â
- I have 100 named layers.
- I have 100 artboards.
- I would like to rename the artboards to match the layer names.
- The layers are organized in the same descending orderas the artboards (ignoring the actual artboard names*).
- The topmost artboard (1 in the list) would be renamed "newspaper", the second artboard would be renamed "typewriter", the third artboard would be renamed "books", etc.
Â
*in the example below the artboard named "Artboard 7" is actually the 6th artboard in list.

when I publish to PDF, CAD automatically names the PDF file as the drawing name and then the tab name eg, Radome Lighting Mounts - 22-095 with the Radome Lighting Mounts being the drawing name and 22-095 being the name of the layout tab.
My question is, are you able to reverse this so that the file name of the PDF reads 22-095 - Radome Lighting Mounts?

i wanna use a existent project to make a new one, i copy all the files that I need to a new project, then I use Design Assistant to rename all files, everything works fine this way. I just saw now a little 'problem' that doesn't bother me, but can be a problem to other ppl who open this project and see the difference.
When I rename the file name from Design Assistant (opening it from the top assembly), all the parts get its PART NUMBER updated and all the files are renamed too, but...when i open the assembly, in the Model tree, no parts have the name updated, all keeps the old name, but if i open the part from the model tree, i open the correct part already updated and renamed, so, its just the model tree displays name that are incorrect. Is that known ? Is there a solution ? Or am I doing something wrong to copy or rename files ?
I realized that is happens most when i rename files from a top assembly with subassemblies. Sometimes when i use just one assemblie with just parts inside it, everything goes normal.

I'm using Photoshop and the Fit Image command to resize my images for a slide show program. The slide show software does not offer the ability to place the image number anywhere on the image. Is there someway to write an action in Photoshop that will grab the image name and place it where I designate on the image? Even stretching the canvas and filling with black and placing the name there would work. I'm not sure if this is possible or if I need to find an Apple Script to do this.

I'm trying to get the filenames of some drawings in a folder. I've got the following code, but it's not working. I get a file count from the line "filecount = objFiles.Count", so it's recognizing "objFiles" as the collection of files in the folder, but everything after that simply does nothing. Oddly, I can change the "If" statement from "<>" to "=", and it still reads the "Then" statement in both cases. However, the FileName is blank.
Dim objFile As FileDialogs
   Set objFile = New FileDialogs
   objFile.Title = strFolderName
   objFile.StartInDir = "C:Documents and Settings"
   strFolderName = objFile.ShowOpen

First off, I don't mind the save as a copy feature. If I have a psd file with layers and smart objects and such, and I Save As > JPG, I don't want the jpg open, I want the psd open. I like how PS does that behavior, but I don't like how that jpg gets " copy" added to it's file name. Yes it's easy to remove, but I'm using a batch action on over 300 pictures, I don't feel like renaming 300 jpg's. Yes it's supposed to be a safety net, but I basically never work from jpg's as original's, and if for some reason I do, I set them as read only and copy the files off to a safe location, so I don't need it.
Â
I know it's possible because my old school's computers with Photoshop CS5 never saved jpg's with copy in the file name. So, how do I stop PS CS5 from adding copy to my file names? Because I need Photoshop to not add copy to my file names on my work computer.

I've exported in all supported vector file formats, and it seem that only SVGsupports object name (and data)... however, I can't use SVG at the moment.
Is there a way to export all objects using a macro?I need in plain ascii: layer and object names, and maybe object data.
I'm looking for a simple format, no transform matrices (as in SVG).
