I have saved a mapinfo drawing with geographic info to a pdf. The layer structure in the PDF is what I expected and reflects the layer structure in mapinfo. When I open the pdf file in Illustrator howver I only get one layer.
Is there any way of keeping the pdf layer structure in illustrator?
I am editing a map and need my map split into multiple rectangular segments. My map is made up of many layers and sub layers which I need to preserve. When I clipping mask the map with a rectangle all of the map's subs layers merge into one layer. How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure? It seems like a 'layer mask' is the correct tool but doesn't seem like CS6 has it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWe use C3D 2012 (metric only) - We are attempting to customize our list of structures for Sanitary Sewers. The structure list shows sizes we do not use and we would like to modify them. However, when we try to select the "Inner Diameter" it displays a list of sizes that we can not seem to modify or add to.
I have looked at some of the XML files to try and modify or add new sizes (example: AeccStructConcentricCylinder_Metric.xml) , but they do not seem to be recognized even after I restart the program.
Here is what the file looks like:

I tried modifying the last line replacing 2550 with 3600.
I also tried adding a line <Item id="i7">3600.0000</Item>
I saved the XML file and restarted the program with nothing changing that I can see.
Looking for correct file(s) to edit so I can modify the LISTS that come up in the piping modules.
One good thing about null structures is the way they display in 3D. They cover that gap in the pipe segments. Can I steal that shape?
I am currently using a simple cylinder for water pipe "joints" and turning it off like most people do I think.
I have drawn a pipe network with multiple concentric sturctures. I need to make them all eccentric now. Is there an easy quick way to do this, or do I have to redraw all of them. When I go to the properties, I cannot find an option that allows me to change this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhy does my text lose its sentence structure when I save my file as an ai, PDF, or EPS and then bring that file back into Illustrator? I've set numerous bodies of text using the text box and also without the text box. It doesn't matter. I will bring that same document back into Illustrator and my full sentences will be chopped up. A full line of text, for instance, while keeping its format, will become fragmented once it's been dropped back into Illustrator. It's very frustrating. If I need to add a character to a fragmented sentence, it will shift the part of that sentence over that I'm adjusting, but other parts will not move so now I'm typing a letter over another letter.
I can make a text box and copy all my text, then paste it into that text box and all the sentences become connected again but I lose the formatting in the process. BUT, again, once that document is saved and brought back into AI, the sentences will again be fragmented.
I need to export to TIFF in CS5 but don't know the structure of the 'parm'. Any clues out there on where to find this information?

Here's what I've got so far, the group rename doesn't work.

I haven't put in anthing to rename the single object yet since I cant even get the group rename to work. I suspect that the group re-name section isn't working because I'm either using bad syntax or an invalid command.
In AI CS5 Version 15.0.2 for Windows 7 64-bit; Is it possible to hide a hierarchal layer from one that is lower in the layer stack? I would like to make visible one of the bottom layers and hide a layer near the top that is on a separate artboard.

So, as I have a lot of layers and sublayers/groups, it is difficult to navigate to a specific location and I need to collapse layer by layer.
Are there some trick to force Illustrator to remember the layer status?
I have two objects intersecting each other on different layers. The object on the top layer I reduced the opacity for and the bottom layer which was previously hidden now is shining through. I do not want this to happen. I want the bottom layer to remain hidden beneath the top layer despite the lowered opacity. How would I accompish this simply? I have CS2.

I created some shapes on one layer, and now want totrace just the outside of those shapes on a different layer. It worked well enough on the first two shapes I did this with (both comprised of ellipses layered to create a particular shape) but on this third one, it keeps bouncing me back to the original layer. This is the only shape that includes straight lines but I can't think of a reason that would keep me from being able to trace the outline of shapes on a different layer.
In PS i can Magic wand selection shape from one layer, drop to sub layer and copy that selected shape from that sub layer. How do I do this in illistrator, and moreover, from multiple layer at the same time.
For instance, in PS = Import an image of gold - select a text phrse with wand - drop to gold - copy paste = gold text.
If I drag an effect from the target circle of one object to anther in the layer's panel it replaces the effect along with all appearance. But I want just to add the effect. For example, a layer has a drop shadow and a path, round corners. I want to move the drop shadow from the layer to the path so that the path now has the round corners and the drop shadow. To do this I have to open the shadow effect of the layer wright down its parameters, then create a shadow effect for the path with the same parameters which is a lot of work.

I've set up AI files with "Placed" images and vector layers on top of the image, but I've never known it to be possible to include other raster layers within the final *open* file. I'm working in CS6.One other question: a client wants me to use something either in AI or in Photoshop-I'm not sure which- called "vector mapping", e.g., he wants to see the type on a separate layer, vector mapped. He is trying to open the work in CS2, which complicates things, but mainly, I've never heard of "vector mapped" text or anything else. Does the term ring a bell? I asked if he meant "vector smart object", but he didn't think it was the same thing, and he claimed that he didn't need editable text. What I know he does want is type on a separate layer that can be maintained in vector mode for zoom-ins on the base art graphic. I think that can be done just fine by saving the placed-image-with-type-layer as a CS2 AI file, but I'm still baffled by his term "vector mapping".

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an imported svg file that I've saved to Illustrator 17.1. I can't seem to change the layer colors (they're all the same light blue) - the only options that come up in the Layer Options dialog are checkboxes for Lock and Show. Oddly, duplicating a layer seems to give the new layer a different color, but again I can't set the color of that layer myself.
Really want to be able to do this, as I use layer colors to track their status (red = not even close to done, yellow = in progress, green = done in MY eyes, blue = done in the CUSTOMER's eyes).
Actions in CS6 have a lot of bugs. Can not get an action to not have a stroke on it, can not get the "add layer below" to stay in an action.

Is there a possibility to count (only) all sublayers in a given layer? CountLayers from LayerSuite is only counting top-level layers and that isn't good enough.
Edit: I am using CS SDK 5.
