Illustrator :: More Than One Bitmapped Layer In AI File?

I've set up AI files with "Placed" images and vector layers on top of the image, but I've never known it to be possible to include other raster layers within the final *open* file. I'm working in CS6.One other question: a client wants me to use something either in AI or in Photoshop-I'm not sure which- called "vector mapping", e.g., he wants to see the type on a separate layer, vector mapped. He is trying to open the work in CS2, which complicates things, but mainly, I've never heard of "vector mapped" text or anything else. Does the term ring a bell? I asked if he meant "vector smart object", but he didn't think it was the same thing, and he claimed that he didn't need editable text. What I know he does want is type on a separate layer that can be maintained in vector mode for zoom-ins on the base art graphic. I think that can be done just fine by saving the placed-image-with-type-layer as a CS2 AI file, but I'm still baffled by his term "vector mapping".
I am using CS6, as is the other user. When they open the file in Illustrator all the artwork is on one layer, even though the original file has numerous layers, and opens with these layers when I open it even now.I have never come across this problem before in all the years I have used Illustrator and have had no joy when trying to search for this problem.
Is there a way of automatically exporting each layer of an Illustrator file into PNG files, with the PNG files taking the name of their layer in the Illustrator file?
When importing an SVG file, I woould like the top level SVG groups to be imported as separate Illustrator layers. Instead, Illustrator creates a single default layer on importing teh SVG file, and adds the tree of groups under that layer.
I have been working on a script to place a psd file onto only one visible layer (document has multiple hidden layers). This java code has worked so far:

however this works with only the top layer visible (eye turned on in Ai). if top most layer isn't visible i get "target layer cannot be modified" error.
For instance say i have 1,2,3 layers. layer 1 (top most) and 3 (bottom most) would be hidden, layer 2 (middle layer) would be visible and then running the script would place the psd file on to layer 2.
What if I have created 7 logo versions. I want the client to view these 7 versions as one file (maybe one PDF file with 1 logo per page). Each logo version is on its own layer in Illustrator right now. How do I convert each logo/layer to a multi-page PDF file? Since this is just for viewing, I don’t have to submit EPS files yet to the client.
I am using ACAD 2005 and am trying to copy&paste several objects from a layer I created in one .dxf file to one of the 2 standard layers (0 or Defpoints) in a new blank .dxf file.
My problem though is that if I copy and paste all of the objects (or even one of them) and them move to the new file and paste, it pastes the objects, but also "imports" into the new file the original file's layer that these objects were on.
For clarity, the new file only has the 2 standard layers and then after copy/pasting an object, the file manager shows the 3rd layer from the original file.
When converting a vector or Illustrator file (such as a logo) into a shape layer any gradient fill is lost. Is there no way to ensure the gradient fill is converted across or is this a matter for a future release of After Effects?
I'm trying to write a script that renames a layer, and group within the layer, then an object within the layer (but not a part of the group) and have it run in a loop.
Here's what I've got so far, the group rename doesn't work.

I haven't put in anthing to rename the single object yet since I cant even get the group rename to work. I suspect that the group re-name section isn't working because I'm either using bad syntax or an invalid command.
In AI CS5 Version 15.0.2 for Windows 7 64-bit; Is it possible to hide a hierarchal layer from one that is lower in the layer stack? I would like to make visible one of the bottom layers and hide a layer near the top that is on a separate artboard.
I have two objects intersecting each other on different layers. The object on the top layer I reduced the opacity for and the bottom layer which was previously hidden now is shining through. I do not want this to happen. I want the bottom layer to remain hidden beneath the top layer despite the lowered opacity. How would I accompish this simply? I have CS2.
I'm on a Win 7 machine using Illustrator CC, using a mouse with the pen tool.
I created some shapes on one layer, and now want totrace just the outside of those shapes on a different layer. It worked well enough on the first two shapes I did this with (both comprised of ellipses layered to create a particular shape) but on this third one, it keeps bouncing me back to the original layer. This is the only shape that includes straight lines but I can't think of a reason that would keep me from being able to trace the outline of shapes on a different layer.
Our company does not have the funds to upgrade so we are stuck with CD12. I am using using a windows 7 /64 bit machine. I created this xml template for the writers to place place their graphics in our author software.
I have 4 layers on my file - grid.guide,desktop and template. The template has the instructions and size dimensions. I have them put all graphics on the high lited desktop layer then when this is complete turn off the template layer. One can print this file with just the graphics showing with no problem.
However if I export this a PNG file both the template and desktop layers show up even though I turned off all layers. I just want the desktop layer with the graphics to show up. I have been using Adobe Illustrator for several years and this doesn't present a problem when saving the graphic as a PNG file.
I need to redo raw editing of a file that I've invested a lot of time with, creating layer masks. Is it possible to save these layer masks and move them to a new .psd file of the same image; same size? (I'm using Ps Cs5, on Windows XP.) .
I have one file (file A) which xrefs several files, all with various layers turned on and off. I created a new file (file B). I xref file A into file B, and ALL layers in file A's xrefs are turned on, and I have to go into layer manager and turn off all unwantd layers. Is there any way to make it so that the layer state in file A is kept, when xreffing it into file B?
In PS i can Magic wand selection shape from one layer, drop to sub layer and copy that selected shape from that sub layer. How do I do this in illistrator, and moreover, from multiple layer at the same time.
For instance, in PS = Import an image of gold - select a text phrse with wand - drop to gold - copy paste = gold text.
I have an open file - we'll call it the 1st file. I will add a background and some other images to it that are located in other psd files. But how? How do I get them in there?
I want to add 2 images, (don't worry about getting into selection and pixels, shadows, edges, etc. the complex stuff is easy LOL) Anyhow, I have another file that I open. How do I get that entire image(or file) into the 1st file - into it's own layer - so I can edit, position, and transform it etc. as I need.

What if there's a 3rd image/file that I want to open and add to yet another layer.
Do I simply select the entire image and copy/paste it? I tried dragging it, knowing that would probably be futile. Anyhow, any and ALL advice on this surely simple procedure would be appreciated.
There are some files with at least 8 files that I want to bring together into one image. Same thing, do I cut and paste them, or is there another way?
All of these are psd files, btw. Would it make a difference if one was different, say a jpeg or tiff etc.
If I drag an effect from the target circle of one object to anther in the layer's panel it replaces the effect along with all appearance. But I want just to add the effect. For example, a layer has a drop shadow and a path, round corners. I want to move the drop shadow from the layer to the path so that the path now has the round corners and the drop shadow. To do this I have to open the shadow effect of the layer wright down its parameters, then create a shadow effect for the path with the same parameters which is a lot of work.
am having an Issue with CS6 when saving files. When saving a file using the 'Save' option (not 'Save As') the file is not staying at the size of the artboard as it should, it is however being aurtomatically cropped down to the actual artwork size. This is causing issues with the Process we work with as we need the file to stay at the artboard size.If I click 'Save As' and change the Adobe PDF Preset to 'Press Quality' then this works, however this means that every file we save(which is quite alot in a day) means we have to go through the 'Save As' option and manually change each save.why this has suddenly started to happen with our Illustrators and do you know how to fix this so that it stays at the Artboard size when 'Save' is used?
So, I'm trying to create a repeat pattern of a Balloon illustration I've done in Adobe Illustrator. I've got the singular file (balloon.ai), which weighs in at around 700MB.
Now I'm trying to create the repeat of this pattern on a separate Artboard which will repeat these balloons, 30 balloons per repeat square to be precise.
What would be the best way to import these separate balloons into the repeat square once (as they're the same file) without affecting the weight of the file and performance of Illustrator?
So, in essence, is there a way to import that balloon.ai file and only have it use up 700MB on the page rather than 30x700MB by the time I've placed 30 balloons?
I can't rasterize the files as the printer needs the raw file.

I'm new to scripting What I want to do and don't know how to go about it is to run a script that collects the saved file name and the full path where the file is saved on the network and displays it on my document.
I'm using Illustrator 5.0 with MAC OS 10.8.4 and the Illustrator file icons are different than the actual file image. It's using the same image for 5 different files. THey all started out the same, but I edited them and then did a save as, but the file icon image didn't update. How can I fix this? I tried resaving the files and copying the files, but it didn't work.
This seems to be happening to large files in general, but happens more often when saving down from CS6 to CS3 (for preflighting). The files will save, then throw this error when re-opening. The preview of the file in the Finder will disappear and the file becomes useless. We are on Macs running 10.6.8 and Illustrator CS6 (fully patched).
I would like to create a master background layer that multiple pages will be built over, while retaining the ability to edit the master background layer after-the-fact which will automatically change all the subsequent pages.
Similar to how an include file would work on a webpage, ie: create the menu as an include file, then all pages that reference that include file would have their menus changed when that single include file gets modified.
Or another way of looking at it: like how headers/footers work in word, ie: change the header or footer and all pages in that document are automatically modified.
