Illustrator :: Link Files Reference To Styles Of Single Master?
Feb 24, 2014
Is there a way to link many Illustrator files (say about 200) to the styles of a single master?
The goal is to set up all of the 200 files in such a way that they can all be modified by a master setting. For example, I would like to control font size, line weight, etc. in this "master". It could simple be a file with settings or another AI file.
I would also need to "break the link" at some point (or just have it such there is not dependency that would make it unusable). That way I could disseminate each file without the need for the master.
I created a clothing price tag design (consisting of some vector artwork, text, and a raster image as a background), and now i'm attempting to create a grid layout of the tags for print (20 tags on a letter-size page i can print using a desktop printer and cut apart manually).
Sounds simple enough, right? Just duplicate the artwork 20 times. Easy.
But here's the catch: 20 copies of the artwork (i.e. 20 copies of every point, line, object, and image) makes for a freaking huge file, too big for the printer to handle. It gets acceptably smaller if i save it as a PDF without preserving Illustrator editing capabilities, but then that defeats the purpose; i need to be able to change the prices at will.
Now, it would seem to make the most sense to save the individual tag design as its own AI file (let's call it 'tag-design.ai'), then simply Place tag-design.ai into a new file as a link, and duplicate it 20 times to create the print layout. Theoretically, i would only need to edit the artwork itself once (to change the price, change a color, etc.), and the changes would be automatically applied to my layout file. However, this is apparently too much to ask: each time the linked artwork is copied, it creates a new, separate link. To further frustrate things, when i edit the artwork file, i then have to update all 20 links manually, meaning that 20 different times, i get an Open File dialog, and have to select tag-design.ai 20 separate times. In the end, it's an exercise in extreme redundancy, and the file size of the layout isn't made any smaller.
Is there something i'm overlooking, or is there really no better, more efficient solution than just making 20 copies of everything and ending up with a file size of 80-90mb?
I have Corel VideoStudio X6 and am experiencing a relink problem. I moved all my media (pics and vid) from c:HomeMediaFiles to d:MediaFiles. I open VS and relink to the new location.
I noticed it didn't relink properly, I have videos with the same name in different directories. In the end it linked to the incorrect video. So, here's my question:
Is there a master file the VideoStudio application uses to reference video locations? I would assume it’s the library and I was hoping I could possibly open the file (with notepad or something) 'find and replace' c:HomeMediaFiles to d:MediaFiles and avoid the relinking through the interface.
I reloaded my library so I still have everything with the old references after I tried to relink through the UI. Good thing I backup regularly.
When I place a psd file in Illustrator, I am not able to check the "link" box and it automatically embeds the image. I don't know if there is something else I need to do to make the box checkable, but I need to be able to link the images.
After installing Mavericks, I can no longer link files in illustrator CC as the finder window closes by itself after one second or if I click on anything. It was happening with save as also, but that seems to have rectified itself by reinstalling the program.
I have created parts made up of a smaller parts themselves, them multiple assemblies of different parts that are all used in a final asembly. Now I need to give this whole assembly to someone. I tried sending all the files together with the assembly. However, when the receiver tried to open the assembly, most of the file references could not be resolved and inventor asked for the path of each, which would take too long to do. Is there any way around this?
I am looking for a AutoCAD management program, that has the ability to use a data base of master .dwg files and turn on or off certain layers and save as a new .dwg file.
Is there a way to exclude single attributes from being defined in a object style? As example: i want to define an outline that does not change width of the objects, but everything else.
There is a small tick box right of every attribute with help text "None this object attribute is not defined by a custom style" but i can not mark it. My feeling is, that i need to switch on this tick box to get the result i need, but i can not. When i click on it, it just gives me a greyed out "Revert". When i try to make child styles, there is a way to break the connection to parent style with these tick boxes, but no luck.
Just wondering, if I have several seperate idw files and I want to combine them into one master file, is this possible? Would be handy to have all my drawing on one file instead of the 30 or so seperate ones it will become.
Is there a way to create a "master" numbering style (say, a number in a filled circle) to annotate an image of something else? I know there are technical drawing suites that do this, but was hoping that there was a way in illustrator (or indesign) Attached image shows the result im going for (yes I know I can do this manually, looking for an optimized way of doing it).
We have AutoCAD 2010 installed on 5 machines in our office. These machines work and save files to our server. One of the workstations always gets a pop up that it is missing reference files. No other workstations are running into this issue. We've tried having multiple users log into this specific computer but they all encounter the same error.
Another thing (which may be related to this error) the drawings that do open up on this computer don't line up. For instance we have a field in the lower right hand corner wiith text such as job name/number, tech who worked on the drawing etc. One all other computers this information lines up perfectly but on this one it doesn't as well os other lines on this machine don't line up properly.
Can I link files from 2 different locations. i.e Music, Clips on a server while running the application from 2 different computers? The reason is, i want to work on both and have it so that if need, I can take my Laptop and show the progress to others.
There are several drawings that when I try to open I get a popup message "References - Unresolved Reference Files". The message box is clear with only the border and the description in the blue bar at the top of the message box. AutoCad LT 2011 locks up and I have to do a Task kill. The same drawing can be opened by most of our other users, but some experience the same issue. When AutoCad is restarted, I get a "Drawing Recovery" empty/clear popup message message freezing AutoCad AGAIN, requireing another Task kill. I have to open a 3rd time, and if I had another drawing open, it's gone and doesn't appear to be recoverable.
I have created two Raw files with one focuses on highlight while the other on shadow. Within Photoshop with these two files open my intention is to use the Move tool and drag-and-drop one image over the other as a layer. At the present I am having trouble to get these two images to register as two layers.
We have tremendous problem in our office while we open the CAD files which have linked to excel tables. It takes endless loading time if any computer has excell sheets opened. We use copy / paste special ( linked ) command to brought excel tables to the DWG files. OLE OBJECT command has worst result about linking excel sheets. How do we control ( link option) in this stution as linked versus unlinked?
I have used ipart to create multiple members in casting & machining.but, i have face problem how to link members in that file. For example i will open 4 member in machining it will automatically refer 4 member in casting. How to link these fille.
I have several assemblies where I've linked parameters between sketches. I need to copy some of these files for re-use in other un-related assemblies. What is the best way to break the link between the files? They are going to be used in the same project.
I thought i could "File Link" from mudbox 2011.fbx files to 3dsmax file link manager but no. i get some error. (Unable to Attach this file;the file may be missing, corrupted, or may not contain valid data)
When I go to plot, my plot styles table only shows .stb files. I have a bunch of .ctb files that exist in the plot styles folder, and everything is pathed correctly but the .ctb files do not show up in autocad. How can I get these files to be available?
(They do show up in some drawings for some reason though, just not when I create a new drawing file.)
I am trying to control the visibility or visual style of the model but through the linked arch file. Everything is wireframe or simple black and white lines and I can see all my devices and equipment for the entire length of the building when I only want to see the devices in the room or where the camera is. It seems when I switch to hidden only my devices change no the linked arch model nor do any of my devices on the other side of the wall go away. I am sure for some the answer is simple but it is escaping me entirely. where I can better control the visual styles in my views of not just my own stuff but the other disciplines as well. Do I have to do anything to the linked files? Going through the Visibility Graphics Links tab doesnt seem to work either.
Using Photoshop Elements 6 on Mac with Lion 10.7. As with other users, I am unable to load styles downloaded from net (asl files). Shapes, brushes, and patterns load just fine. Have tried placing them in styles folder in presets (that didn't work) and library application folder for styles (that didn't work). Have tried removing preferences file for styles from preferences folder and doing both of the above (didn't work).
I have never seen this before we implemented vault. But, this could be a inventor related issue. In vault collaboration 2012 we use a single project file for all projects. The ipj file is checked into vault. We keep a unchecked-out copy in the working folder. By the end of the day I must I started and closed inventor several times. I notice that there are several copies of shortcut link (lnk) files to the ipj file created in the same location as of ipj file.

how to properly link my footage on my timeline to color corrected files from film convert. I know how to do it to each individual clip at a time, but when I select a whole folder, it always relinks the media to it's original destination and not the new destination with the color corrected files. What's the correct way to link multiple clips to new source files?
If i used a text file or an image as a link in more than one indd file, is it possible to know in which and how many files indd this files is a link? if yes, how can i do?
I have structures and alignments data referenced. If I assign the structures ref alignments in the dwg with the data refs for labeling, the next time I open the dwg the ref alignments are set back to none, causing the labels to be ?
