Illustrator :: Groupings Are Lost When Saving Between CS5.1 And CS6
Jul 2, 2013
A PDF that was created with Illustrator CS5.1 is opened in CS6 and then saved. When this said PDF is opened again in CS5.1 all groupings are lost. Any way of preserving this when saving?
Recently we had a user pose the inquiry regarding lost files from users when trying to save files to the network from the windows 7 computers. They would look and act like they were being saved to the mapped drive from the network but when they returned the next morning the work was gone.
<Verified environment and settings were all within specifications and supported>
I know the title sounds weird, but I am having trouble keeping my levels from reverting back to their default look when saving as a jpeg or attempting to flatten or merge my layers. I can attach a link to the PDS if you would like to take a look at it. The layer that is losing its levels settings is called "Stars". I don't change my levels often, so I am sure its something I am just missing. The levels are just changes on a single layer, as stated above its the layer called "Stars".
I now have a PDF file that displays properly as a PDF, in Preview, Acrobat, etc., but when I open it up to edit it in Illustrator it shows me an older version. I'm trying to figure out if the AI elements of the file between that older version and the current version may be somehow retrievable, or if they're just totally gone.
Here's what I did, and what I've been able to do again (on two different computers) to replicate the same problem:
1. create a new file, and save as a PDF with Illustrator editing capabilities (let's call it test.pdf) 2. draw some stuff with the brush tool 3. save 4. save a copy, a PDF without Illustrator editing capabilities (testcopy.pdf) 5. draw more stuff with the brush tool 6. save 7. save as, a PDF without Illustrator editing capabilities (testcopy2.pdf)
Theoretically at this point, I should have one PDF that's editable in Illustrator (test.pdf) and one that's not editable in Illustrator (testcopy2.pdf) that look the same, and then an older version that's not editable in Illustrator (testcopy.pdf). (The uneditable PDFs were just to send to someone for review.)
Instead, test.pdf opens up in Illustrator to look like testcopy.pdf, not testcopy2.pdf. Any changes made between the 'save a copy' and the 'save as' (i.e. things drawn at step 5) are lost. Yet, when I open up test.pdf in Acrobat or Preview, it looks like testcopy2.pdf, the most up-to-date version. I'm able to open up testcopy2.pdf in Illustrator, so I haven't lost everything, but brush strokes have been converted to shapes, and what I need to do at this point is change the characteristics of the brush strokes.
I do recognize that I wouldn't have had this problem if I were working with an .ai file originally, which I try to do typically, but for some reason didn't here.
Illustrator crashed in the middle of working on a file. Looked around for a recovered file on the desktop. Nothing. Can't seem to find any option to set my Preferences for auto-save.
20 years using illustrator and for the first time, I don't know why but it suddenly became impossible to copy an object by dragging it while pressing "alt". And I've lost the dragging along the grid locking by maintaining caps pressed...
I'm working on a cd package. I have a detailed vector graphic in the design. It looks great in illustrator , but when i save as pdf, i lose a huge amount of clarity.I have dark stroke on it, at .25 in a dark color and the fill is lighter. Should I increase the stroke weight? Rough size of the graphic is 5x3...
We are having problems with text in Illustrator CS6.
1. When we copy / paste text within illustrator all color information is lost. 2. When we save documents in Illustrator CS6 then re-open text with color attributes changes to different random colors!!
For example: If we save an Illustrator document with a paragraph of text that is part red and part black when we re-open the same paragraph might be all gray, or orange or (you pick a color).
Since Lion or Mountain Lion, we have had an annoying problem where the last folder location is not remembered in Illustrator. For example when updating links on multiple files, would like for the folder location to return to the last one used, but this would go to some folder 3 levels higher/
URL....Also the software seems to not have bneen updated in a long time, adn don't wnat a solution that won't last. Am on 10.8.2.
I used to be able to do something like effect->3d-> revolve, then go to the actions panel and bring up the 3D revolve, click on it and edit it again. Now, when I open the actions panel the simple 3d revolve is replace with a long long list of actions of course I can't bring up the 3d revolve effect and edit it.
I have removed all of the Illustrator prefs in my library file; but, it still does it.
I have tried to customize keyboard shortcuts in CS4 but each time I quit I lose all settings. (they work fine til I quit). I have saved new sets, overwritten previous sets but they don't seem to save.
Otherwise, speaking as a recent convert from Freehand, CS4 is wonderful now multiple pages have been added
I have lost the ability to free scale objects/text boxes etc. in Illustrator CS5. I have to use the scale tool every time I need to adjust the size of something and it is not a sustainable technique in terms of time/productivity/function.
All of the sudden I can't create a customer profile when creating a new document. Earlier I selecting the print profile. I tried opening a new document and creating a custom profile but that option is grayed out.
I created custom brushes yesterday but they don't appear today. Is that because of the profile that the brushes were created with and without that profile I won't see the brushes?
When I try to save a pdf from Illustrator, it crashes. I have CS5. It doesn't matter which settings I choose in the dialog box, it always shuts down illustrator and says Adobe Illustrator has stopped working....
I became a member of Adobe Creative Cloud a few days ago. Today I started working in Illustrator CC, but it really bothers me that everytime I save my doccument it crashes.Well, at least, it says that it crashes, but if I wait a couple of minutes it works again and it saved my procress.
Also when I close the program and open it again, it already crashes before I have done anything.
I am working on a Windows 7 computer, and with Illustrator CS6 I didn't had this problem at all.
I am trying to save as a psd file from illustrator to imoprt it into photshop and take it from there. I have made more than 100 layers and when i try to save as 300 dpi keeping and the layers as well given an option from the dialogue box.
I get a error message not enough memory to save the file. Why does it not save? My laptop has enough memory for another 4 pcs.
The files i'm saving for web so i can get them in jpg (or gif) format are coming out very pixelated. this is when i print the image.
what is the best way to save for web an image and keep the resolution good.
using for a business card template. Every template will let me attach images i want to the project. to do this.. i "get file from computer" and it drops the image in but real small... then you are supposed to enlarge it onto your work however you want. well when i enlarge this image file, it gets pixelated badly. I'm thinking it's the way i'm saving it. i do not adjust anything when i save. maybe i should.
this is what avery template notes about the images i am allowed to use - When uploading the image, the maximum size allowed is 4 MB. You can only upload JPG and PNG images either as RGB or CMYK.
I'm trying to upload shirt designs to jakprints and I'm using the template they provided to design the shirt. Hoever, when I save the file, only my design is left. No template.
So a few times now I have gone to save a document and illustrator cs6 64 bit crashes. It doesn't outright close, but it stops responding to windows and all of the pallate windows and main window begin to flash black and then back to regular.
I run windows 8 on this computer and am worried that it just incompatible for the os. So I have begun to run the program in windows 7 compatability mode. For the last 20 minutes it hasn't crashed out, but I've only saved two documents and this error has only happend three times in a month of using the application, though two of those times were within an hour of each other today.
I'm not 100% certain but I believe that each file it has happend on is also one that I had just saved for web.I found as much of a crash log as I can in this new os but it reads as follows:
The program Illustrator.exe version 16.0.3.691 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.
I'm finding that when i add a second artboard to an existing ai, then save and close, it has disappeared on reopening.
I have both pieces of artwork (one for each page), but 1 of the artboards will have disappeared. Irritatingly the remaining artboard sits between the 2 pieces of artwork - in the wrong position for both!!!
I am running a fully licensed pro version of Illustrator CS6 on two machines. They both now crash (freeze) when saving EPS. Fine on PDF, Ai, etc... just EPS on both machines. No error messages, just a freeze then a force quite.
Both machines are 27in iMacs, under one year old, latest versions of Mountain Lion, all top notch and running on i7 & i5 processors. Spec is not the problem. All software is updated.
Really at a loose end. Reinstalled the software on one machine, OK at first, then back to crashing.
AI6 is very slow on some saves. Nothing fancy with this file. No gradients, no clipping masks, no placed images, simply color line art. I run a Mac Pro with 16Gb ram and Tb raid drives . I've had this problem with a few other files and I think in CS5.
I have a problem with Illustrator CS6.When I try to save in .ai or other format, I have a Windows error message like "Illustrator has stopped working".And Illustrator close it.
I can't save for web to SVG format from illustrator CS6. The option isn't in the format list of the save for web dialogue; I only have gif, jpeg, png-8 and png-24. I am sure it used to be there, so where has it gone?
Have I got to do something in the process of setting up a new document?
I am a graphic design student in college in my last semester and I have many projects invovling Illustrator I need to get done. Since a few weeks ago, both my Illustrator CS6 and CC have been crashing only when I save my progress. I have since uninstalled the CS6 and only have the CC version, but I go to save anything and it tells me Illustrator has stopped working and shuts down every time. I need these projects saved for Monday.
This is a question about Adobe Illustrator, not Photoshop, so I hope this fits under this topic category. I've been given some floor plans done in Autocad and they need to be converted to PDFs. Autocad does not save as PDFs so what I have to do is open the files in Illustrator and then save as PDF. The problem is that, for some reason, Illustrator won't save the text that's included in the plans. I can open it and see the text just fine (labels, dimensions, unit numbers, etc.), but when I save it and open up the PDF file, all the text is gone. I'm getting around this by transfering it to Photoshop since Photoshop does preserve text when saving as PDF. But even this is more difficult than it sounds. In order to transfer it to Photoshop, I have to first open it in Illustrator, copy and paste it into Photoshop, and then manually retype all the text because even when copying and pasting from Illustrator, the text dissappears. Does anybody know how to preserve text when saving as PDF in Illustrator, or at least how to preserve text when copying from Illustrator and pasting into Photoshop?
