Illustrator :: CS6 Lagging With Many Small Objects
Jul 6, 2013
I am running Illustrator CS6, and I have found that Illustrator lags a lot when I have multiple objects that are very small. For example, for my school project I am creating four seasons, and I have multiple leaves on the trees, but since they are very small and I have multiple copies it slows Illustrator down siginificantly. What I am trying to figure out is if there is a way to reduce the quality of the artwork, so that It can run fast when I need it to. Below is a link to download the file, so you can see what I mean. Right now it lags when you zoom In/Out or if you try and move the object. Also, my computer Specs are listed below
Intel I7 2700K (3.5GHz Quad Core)8GB DDR3 PC3-1600Radeon HD5770 (1GB Ram)
For the most part, it loads files very quick but after making multiple copies of files its starts to really lag a lot. The download link is below [URL] ....

How does one remedy this Adobe error message? "Can't scale the objects. The requested transformation would make some objects too small to use." This one always gets me. I'll spend more time trying to find the object in question. This has happened in almost al versions, but this time it's CS5.

I can't seem to move objects in my drawing small distances..I'm used to being able to do this..must be some setting I hit, but I can't find which one it might be. I have snap to off, but this isn't behaving like snap to..it's behaving like I'm only "allowed" to move objects certain distances; any smaller and the object simply doesn't move at all..

removal of small objects in a drawing. I made with ArcGIS a map of the Netherlands. Because it is a detailed map, it also becomes heavy and my computer slows down. I merged some smll elements together with the pathfinder-unite command, but it is still to heavy. So I have to delete some other elements. The problem is that I want to get rid of all the small objects, but I dont know how to select them. It is a topograpic map with for example houses, lamp post et cetera, but I actuallly need only the build areas.

Somehow I've managed to disable a feature in Illustrator CS6 that does two things: 1) it causes a small box to follow the cursor when I'm drawing an object 2) the light green lines or x's are gone now, too. How can I get them back? Are they only visible under certain circumstances?

i have a Mac OSX V.10.7.5 and 3.4 GHz i7 8GB Ram.
Indesign and Photoshop open files very quickly, but illustrator while opening any type of file—whether it's an AI Cs6 file or EPS file or SVG file—there is at least a 20 second delay.

The four squares all have a 0px top and bottom Push Margin set, which I would have thought would have meant I could have butted them up directly next to each other (but not overlapping).
However you can get them very close but not touching.

I usually create models in Inventor and import into Max for rendering. One particular model that I am creating has a small section which is a pit containing a pile of coal. Is there a quick and easy way to model a pile of random sized small objects such as coal, balls etc. in Max?

I am a surveyor doing an asbuilt of some ponds. I am working in the engineer's dwg. In PS, he does not scale down his drawing sheet block to 1"=1', he keeps it the same scale as model space, i.e. 1"=50'.
He has a viewport in the layout, and my Cogo Points seemed to be scaled at 1"=1', which makes them much to small, but everthing else is scaled correctly.
How can I make my Cogo Points appear bigger in PS?
I tried dbl-clicking in the viewport to be in MS, and the viewport says it's scale is 1'0" = 1'0". When I change it to 1"=50', the model view shrinks way down (the viewed area is bigger), and when I scroll to make the model view bigger, the Cogo Points are still small.
When I read the Properties of the viewport, it says:
Anno scale: 1"=50
Standard scale= 1"=50
Custom scale= 0.02
How I can get this viewport to make my Cogo Points big as they should be?

I'm relatively new to using illustrator and im trying to change the dpi of a drawing. One of my frinds made a T-shirt design in a non adobe software program, forget it know, and accidentally draw it at a 100 dpi file and looks blured when changed to a 185x185 pixel size. Can I take that file and change it to 300 dpi?
Go to effects>
Document Raster Effects>
and select dpi quality
I've already done that and it doesn't look like it did anything. Does it need to be redrawn?
I'm running cs6

I have a problem with drawing small circles in Illustrator, because when I export them they are not "smooth". The edges seem like truncated. Have a look here with "Pixel preview" turned on:
And now, setting an offset of +0.5px for X and Y, the circle is how I want it to be:
Why? Is there a way to "smooth" the circle?

Anytime I double-click on an Illustrator file to open it, the Illustrator CS6 window opens up too small to view the file. It comes up with an error message that says "Can't open the illustration. There is not enough room for the window; increase document area and try again."
If I then click on the box to expand the Illustrator window to full-size, then I can open the file. It's just frustrating that everytime I try to open an AI file by double-clicking on it, I get this error message.

I created a logo in ai cs5 that is the size of 7w x 4h. But I wanted to be able to create a larger jpg. Since the vector format allows for the image to be scaled, is there a way to scale it larger, then create a jpg at this larger size? Or, is there a way to scale it to 500% and then save it as a new file with this enlarged size being 100%? I'm fairly new to AI, but have used PS for quite some time.

I have the following illustration:
I want to try just putting a small stroke that goes around the outside of the drawing, however when I do select all and apply the stroke, it obviously strokes the inner parts of the drawing (for instance the mouth, eyes, dimples, etc). I've tried merging all of the layers, but it doesn't work.

I am having a very unusual problem when saving from Illustrator CS5.5 to our SBS2011 server. All other components of Design Standard are unaffected.
Suppose that I am working on Version 10 of file and go to SAVE AS > Version 11. Illustrator will often return the error “The file may be read-only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder” even though I have permission to write to that directory.
When I check the directory the file Version 11 has been created but contains 0kb of data. If I then attempt to over-write Version 11 via SAVE AS it works perfectly, everytime.
This behavior is also present on another - identical – workstation using the same software. The systems affected are both running Windows 7 64bit.

I never had lagging problems of any kind using Photoshop CS3. But I recently reformatted my computer, reinstalled PS CS3, and wow... the redraw and updating was awful! Brush strokes took several seconds to show, for example.
I looked into my preferences for the culprit. I changed the amount of RAM Photoshop should use, reordered my scratch disks. Changed the # of history states & cache levels, checked & unchecked enable 3D acceleration... Each time I changed one preference, I closed & reopened photoshop. No go, same lagging!
I kept asking myself what was different. Then I remembered: after reformatting my computer,
I updated my ZoneAlarm from version 7 to version 8. I had never before used this updated version of ZA with CS3.
So in ZoneAlarm, I went to
Program Control,
Programs, and saw that whereas the "Trust Level", "Access", "Server", and "Send Mail" columns were all set to question marks for Photoshop 7 (meaning ZA asks me before allowing Photoshop 7 certain permissions), several of those same options were listed as "X's" (completely blocked) when I reinstalled Photoshop CS3.
ZoneAlarm 8
never prompted me, as version 7 did, about certain permissions for CS3! And it didn't occur to me to look into ZA's settings when Photoshop was virtually unusable. My clue came from a CS4 troubleshooting tip here: temporarily disable one's AV and see how PS behaves. The difference after disabling ZA was astounding!
All this to say, you may not have to replace your AV if you find it makes Photoshop lag. Photoshop CS3 worked smoothly after I changed my AV's permissions.

I've just rebuilt my PC with the following specs:
CPU - Intel I7 920 2.66ghz Quad Core
Mobo - Asus P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition
RAM - 6Gb G.Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600mhz) (9-9-9-24) RAM in Triple Channel setup
GPU - BFG nVidia GeForce GTX280 1024mb OC2 Edition
HDDs - Seagate 500GB 32mb Cache SATA II Main drive, Western Digital 500GB 16mb Cache SATA
II Documents Drive, Western Digital 320GB 16mb Cache SATA II Photoshop Scratch Disk
PSU - Hyper Type M 880W
Case - Coolermaster Cosmos
I am using Windows XP Pro x64 Edition and the 64bit version of CS4.
I'm quite pleased with the system so far, it pretty much obliterates everything you throw at it without blinking an eye. However, I am absolutely stumped as to why the in the world Photoshop CS4 (and CS3) are running as if my system is 10 years old...
So here's what's happening:
After rebuilding my system with the above specs I have installed Photoshop CS4 and have opened up a painting I have been working on. I zoom in and the screen redraw is sickeningly slow. I hold space and drag the canvas to navigate around it, and again the redraw rate is terrible and results in what I can only describe as more like a render in something like 3D Max than simply dragging the canvas in Photoshop. While the brush control is smooth for the most part, when painting using several quick strokes I get a lot of lag after a little while which manifests as my brush strokes not registering and then all of a sudden happening at once.
Now, I have CS4 installed on my other system at my parents house which has the following specs:
Intel Core2Duo E6750 2.66ghz (OCed to 3.1ghz) CPU
Asus P5KE Deluxe Motherboard
8GB OCZ DDR2 800mhz RAM
BFG nVidia GeForce 9600 GT OC2 Edition
2x Seagate 250gb HDDs (Not in RAID)
And with this system, Photoshop CS4 works great with the only exception being the OpenGL support not being supported.
I have updated all of the drivers on this i7 system. I've even reinstalled older versions of the video card driver and still I get lag. I've uninstalled Nod32 Antivirus, Comodo Firewall, stopped Diskeeper from automatically defragging and ended lots of uneeded processes but I still get this problem. I've uninstalled my Wacom Tablet drivers and used the mouse in Photoshop and that hasn't helped. I've reinstalled 3 older versions of Wacom Drivers also to no avail.
I've even formatted and tried a fresh install.
Also, I tried reinstalling Photoshop CS3 and get similar problems. Only in CS3 there is no issue with the redraw rate, only it lags all of a sudden while trying to navigate an image with space held down and dragging on the mouse or wacom pen (or a blank canvas for that matter) then it will freeze the images movement then suddenly jump.

There are 3 elements there. the top of the clap board was placed before i started tryinbg to create the slanted dashes that are on the average clapboards. The white dash was skewed using Object > Transform > Shear. Then i attempted to rotate it to fit.
I need 4 of these skwed white squares / trapezoids on the top along with 4 to match on the top of the larger potion of the clapboard. I do not want to eye it as it will be a part of a logo.
What would be the best method to use?Is there a way to draw the 4 rectangles on top of a perfectly horizontal long black rectangle and skew the white dashes at the same time?Is there a way to skew based on the dimensions of the longer black rectangle?

I want to blend two similar paths. Both paths have dashed lines as strokes, and both dashed lines go from big to small dot, in decreasing direction. I want to blend both paths, so the blend goes from big to small, in BOTH directions. The ideal ending image would show the biggest dot at the top left corner, and the smallest, at the down right corner (the final project involves two spirals, but for the sake of simplicity, I attach two straight lines).
I try to blend them, and the blend only goes in one direction, as seen in the attached samples (in the sample, it goes from top to bottom, but it doesn't go from left to right). It seems that Illustrator takes only the first dot size, and applies it as if all the path has the same dot size.

I really want to make a small honeycomb swatch pattern (the polygons should be small - 2 px x 2px) , but I just cannot get it to work. What I did is make one small polygon, and went to: Object>pattern>make and applied the following settings:
You will see that on the shoulder of the t-shirt, the pattern is kinda trasparent - the bottom layer is visible-I don't want it to be.The bottom pattern(on the side of the t-shirt) you will see came out fine, except that the polygons are too big and I cannot get it any smaller.

I'm creating t-shirt pictures and have a problem: Spreadshirt says that my pictures have tiny objects in it, and that they have too many different colors. (I'm only allowed to have 3) I want to color all the transitions between the colors, but how do I select them without having to color one little spot at the time? Is it any way to just remove the transitions? And how do I remove the objects that are too small? Select same fill color doesn't work, or I'm doing it wrong. I also clicked expand to fix a text issue, don't know if that matters.

I'm working on a collage, and I'm not sure if Illustrator, InDesign or PS would be the best application to use.
I've got 7 sheets of paper, each with a bunch of black and white line drawings, that I've scanned into seven PDFs. I need to be able to select, cut, paste, resize, rotate, and move around each of the little drawings onto one big artboard - about 150 little drawings total.
I did this once in Illustrator already, and I learned the hard way that the "transform" tool also changes image resolution - I scaled the individual drawings down just so I could fit them all on the page, and when I tried to scale them back up again to make the layout look nice, they were extremely pixilated. I'd like to avoid this time loss the second time around!
What is the best way to select all of the little drawings from the larger PDF, copy, and paste into a new master document, erase the white background, and then manipulate the layout?

I started to use Illustrator since CS2 and done heaps of shapes using the 3d feature.ever since cs5 and beyond, ive encountered a problem when ever I import or copy paiste from illustrator into Photoshop my 3d shape tends to have missing blend steps. I'm setting it to 256 blend steps to get a smooth transition but when i import my Ai into ps or copy paiste it notice that it leaves some small gaps in between the blends. Now does this happen to any other users?
On the left is illustrator using 3d and on the right is the copy paisted/imported Ai file, ive put a red shape behind the yellow ace of spade to make it clear that the red is noticeable.
