I got Gimp 2.4. I am missing something. Every time I use a tool like rotate, it keeps the old picture there and turns a new image around. Then when I select another tool like resize, the image goes back/ to it's original position?

I've noticed an annoying fact about PS CS6 that never happened in earlier CS versions: If I have a few files open at the same time, and I make a transformation in an image, then move on to antother image, maybe to edit something out of for the first one, when I return to the first image, the change I made is undone, and the image is back to where it was before the transformation. I haven't hit "undo" or any other command in hte interim-I just navigated to a different file and didn't touch the first one for a few minutes. Simply put: if I make a transformation such as rotating something or changing scale, then click on a different file, make changes there, then go back to the first file, it's as if I had never made the last transformation. I ddin't save the file, but why should I have to? I simply left it momentarily. It doesn't happen consistently, and it isn't a deal-breaker, but why does it happen at all? And how can I stop it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIn 2.6, when I had a Selection and wanted to delete the surrounding area in a gradual, smooth way, you obviously just go Feather > Select > then apply the desired amount of the gradient.
While that seems to be somewhat similar in 2.8, there appear to be two major differences:
1) The Feather effect now also smooths out the selection itself. So when I select the outline of a human figure and set the effect number high, it smooths the shape out so that it's basically just an oval.
In the past, the Feather Effect did not alter the shape of the Selection for me. Why is this different, now?
2) The Feather effect itself - the color gradiation - is now much less evident. It seems to now just make the whole image dimmer. Why this is and how I can get it to behave as it did in 2.6? (I use this a TON.)
I am opening some 300 dpi photographs, but when I go to the "scale image" dialog box in Gimp, the image resolution is listed by default as 72dpi !!
But the pictures were shot in high-res, and when you look at the file properties or open the image in Photoshop, they all confirm that it is a 300 dpi picture. Only Gimp is presenting it as 72dpi. It happens that the photographs are bw, but the color mode is RGB, not grey scale.
How I can stop Gimp down sampling the images automatically if that's what is happening?

I am trying to get the white background changed to yellow to match the web page. I have followed the instructions in the GIMP manual for bucket fill, Foreground Select Tool, edit>fill with fg or bg color. Nothing works. The only color I can get is black when the fg/bg option is black. In the toolbox I have changed both fg and bg to yellow. Still no change. I would like to change a new canvas to the yellow bg color and then copy and paste my image onto it.
When in brush mode, clicking "ctrl" switchs to color picker until yourelease. Is this shortcut editable? What if I want this to be set onAlt instead, for instance?
I could not find any shortcut which looks like it would do this in thekeyboard shortcuts list. Is there one? How to change this shortcut?
I'm having some issues using either GIMP or PS to do this, so I figured I'd ask here. when it comes to image editing and tasks like this, but I'm currently being asked to do something for a job.
I need to take a single image which is a restaurant floor layout, then make it so all of the tables on the image are a different layer so that they can be moved around/customized accordingly.
As far as I can tell, this would involve creating layers, copying the tables from the main image, pasting them all on top as their own layer, and then sliding them around from there.
Is there any easy way to do this, or am I completely off-base?

I used lasso to outline the image.
However, when I right click, the lasso will not disappear.

I then select the colours I want, select Active and Pressed, and then hit create. The buttons look perfect, except for one thing ..I need the buttons without the Text. But if I enter no text in the text box when creating the button, I get this error:

I want to make a Christmas present spelling out the last name using individual photos of letters (see below). I would like the finished image to be 16x20, and I am going to upload it and have it printed at a photo developing shop. I'm not sure how to set this up in GIMP.
When I set up my new file, how many pixels should I make the new image, if my desired size is 16x20. I'm not sure how many dpi to use when I convert the inches to pixels. I read that 300 dpi is desired.
I was thinking about making image boxes for each letter in one layer and cutting and pasting each letter into the boxes. Is this possible or do I need to make a new layer for each photo?
I am using Gimp 2.8 and i am trying to create my own brushes.I make the image i want and then i go to export it into my gimp brushes as name.gbr but and error pops up telling me i dont have permission.
This is the exact message.

I'm trying to make my second ebook cover with GIMP, The ebook is 'The Man in Black' by Stanley J Weyman, and the cover must be 600px wide by 800px high - this fits most readers.
I have cropped a monochrome image to show the head and torso of the Man, and scaled it to 280*400px - though I may want to make it bigger later depending on how the cover looks.
I want this image to be on a black background, with the book title above the image and the author's name below - both in white.
The next step, I think, should be to make a layer 600*800px which I'll color black, then put the book title towards the top of the layer / image and the author's name towards the bottom.
Then I think I'll need to make a transparent area in the middle of this layer just big enough for the Man image to show through, then put the Man image on another layer, then combine the layers.
Is there a way to do this without making a solid line then removing parts with the background color?
This would be a phantom line or centerline in engineering lingo.......
I need to make a poster in A1 size and I would like to know whether it is feasible to do so with GIMP, because I've seen the list of templates when making a new file and the size goes only up to A3 format.
I realize I can do the designing in A3 format and just print the A1 sheet, but I don't know if this will yield good results when considering the resolution and such.
I have the brush editor open, and I make the radius bigger and the circle in the brush editor gets bigger; but when I go to the picture, the circle for the eraser stays the same size. What am I missing here?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an image that is a cellphone picture of a magazine picture. It is 1952 X 3264 pixels tall and skinny. It is mostly blackish but has a red line drawing in it.
I would like to make a layer(?) that is 4352 X 3264 (4x3 ratio) that is all black then put the original image on it (as a different layer?). After that I would like to put a very light smoky-haze over it all. Lastly resize it to 1200 X 1600 and reduce the file size to a reasonable size.
I've set up GIMP 2.8.4 and it works great on my mac with Mountain lion.
However I need to run a batch script on a group of images and all tutorials for that take for granded that running gimp on a terminal window launches gimp. Well in my case it doesn't! And tbh I haven't found where I should point (the path to) the gimp command so that it would run.
So basicaly running Gimp on a terminal returns error no such command. And I need to know what path to add to my mac's PATH variable so that Gimp doesn't return an error. After that I would like to run the batch script from the terminal for the group of images I have.
I am wanting g to make a person partially transparent for a picture I am working on. I know you can use opacity but after I make the selection, the entire image still gets transparent.

I want the corners to be transparent. When I outline the area I want to make transparent and then select clear it changes the current color (black) to white. When I use this saved file in my compilation the icon that it produces has corners that are white not transparent. How should I be doing this?

I've done a Google search and have found several tutorials on making a " brushed metal surface" but nothing about brass itself. What color tools and values does one use to create a texture that looks like a nice warm, polished brass with typical brass highlights and shadows?
make a rusted metal square in Gimp. I managed to google to make a square selection and fill it with a color. Now I would really like to give it a effect like in this tutorial. I can sort of get it working, but my starting square is not good enough and I do not know much about colors. How do I make a good starting square with some gradient added to it (well I can make one in inkscape and export it, but how do I do it in Gimp), and most importantly, what colors would work well and how do I give the rust a rust-color.
