Jul 29, 2012I know how to use the scissor tool to cut out patches but since they're difficult to place i like to define areas like with the wand tool. Did i by chance miss a important function?

Photoshop :: How To Delete Areas With Magic Wand In Quick Mask Mode
Nov 27, 2012I'm trying to find a quicker way to create a mask. In the image below I am removed the white areas, and I use the magic wand with - (minus) selected, at the moment I have to switch between quick mask mode as to see what parts you have missed.
On the left you can see an area inside the object that has been removed and the part next to is white, I would like to be able to click this white area and it ruen red so that it adds it to the selection?
how this could be done or is there an easier way in which to do this?
Edge Animate CC :: Working With Polygon Shapes And Defining Active / Non-active Mouseover Areas?
Mar 7, 2014Since Edge only has rectangles and ellipses built in as available shapes, how to I/we work with polygon shapes and active mouseover areas INSIDE of these shapes and non-active mouseover areas OUTSIDE of the shapes?
Problem/symptom: when I import a polygon, be it any file format from from Photoshop or SVG from Illustrator, a rectangular border/background (transparent) gets applied, leading to this rectangle defining the mouseover area of the shape - and not the shape itself (be it a star or whatever).
WHAT I WANT: the very shape defines the mouseover area. How do I achieve this?? See examle below:

GIMP :: Aerial Photo Of Island - Make Water Areas Black And Land Areas White
Jan 29, 2013In the image below I have an aerial photo of an Island. I need to make it so as water areas are black and land areas are white (not greyscale) almost like a silhouette. My first plan was to draw round the island with a black paint brush and then use the "bucket fill" with a suitable threshold to fill all of the areas up to the black outline with black, however this doesn't work as the bucket fill either breaks through the black line or when I reduce the threshold, doesn't color the water areas solidly.

Nov 22, 2013Recently I noticed that when I apply some operation on area selected with magic wand (for example desaturation or brightness modification) not only pixels from selections are modified. When modification has big strength I can see that pixels laying even 20 pixels away from selection border are slightly modified. From the other hand: I don't see this effect on normal selections. So I have two questions:
1) Is it any way to manipulate strength of this effect (modify maximum affected distance)?
2) Is it any way to use this effect with other kinds of selections?

Oct 11, 2011I am currently searching the tools that I use in Adobe PS/AI in other products. I have recently downloaded GIMP as a possible substitution for Adobe PS/AI. But I have been searching the default (no plugin) tool box for anything that can do the Magic Wand Tools job. I just have not found it.
Magic Wand - select a pixel/color on the screen. Magic wand will then select all colors that correlate to your selection. I use the magic wand to kill backgrounds out of photos.
GIMP :: How To Erase Or Change Dotted Areas
Feb 28, 2012I've got a problem editing an image with a dotted background in it. By 'dotted', I mean an array of small evenly spaced black dots on a white background.
I've tried the fuzzy select tool which kind of works. It fills in the white space with the color I want but leaves the dots untouched. I want to get rid of the dots.
The image has a lot of rectangles containing text (these are not dotted) on this dotted background so using the select tool would be a real chore.
GIMP :: Paint / Fill Antialiased Areas Of PNG?
Oct 26, 2010I've used GIMP to great effect for quite a while now but I know I'm taking the long way around on a lot of things because I'm not very savvy on CG stuff, so I thought I'd ask here. I actually was registered with Gimptalk but it appears to be gone? Anyway...
I am currently making my own 'original artwork' by using usually open source/public domain photos and such, and using transparent layers to "draw" lines over them, making my own lineart. My problem is that I can't seen to find a "turn antialising off" checkbox in GIMP.
Even if I did, I do some postprocessing in Inkscape to turn the lineart into something more smooth, and then it re-antialiases (is that even a word) the picture, and when I try to use the paintbucket to fill in the lineart to get simple color pictures, I get lots of white specks and dots from the antialiased edges of the smooth lines.
What do I need to do to a picture to make sure I can fill spaces with a color right up to the lines, AFTER it has been antialiased, in my example? I can't use duotone or index to 2bit color or whatever, because that bites chunks out of the black lines and also destroys the smoothness of the Inkscape processing, but even if I haven't used that, it still reduces the lines spottily.
I've tried turning the tolerance way up and filling the areas with white first, hoping the white and the near-white specks will be close enough to "bleed" together so I have one color, and then paint with the desired color, but it still has specks.
Also, how to do lineart to achieve the same results I'm trying to achieve. I'm hand-tracing over the lines by eye, which, though I'm good at it and it doesn't take long, is more time consuming than it probably should be, and tedious.

GIMP :: Darken Areas Without Affecting Any Other Parts Of Image
Dec 12, 2012I've got a few pictures taken at night of buildings and the street lights and lights on the buildings have come out extremely bright and 'bleed' out of their point of origin (not sure how else to explain it).
All I want to do is to darken these areas without affecting any of the other parts of the image. Is this possible at all?
What would be ideal would be if there was a tool, plug-in or method where I could select a certain colour range or brightness threshold that I could then lower however much I want without affecting the already dark areas.
GIMP :: Supernova Effect Lighting Up Transparent Areas
May 11, 2012I am in the process of adding lighting effects to one of my images. I'm trying to get a lightning effect, and decided to use Supernova off of the image's frame. This worked for full-frame layers, but on smaller layers, not so well.
What's happening is that I'm trying to get single objects in layers to have a lighting effect, but it's lighting up the transparent space around them, making a distinctly brighter area... well, it's better if I show you:

GIMP :: How To Fill Areas Of Rotated Image (2013)
Aug 19, 2013I'm trying to rotate an image. Actually, I figured out how to rotate it. But I can't figure out how to fill in the "empty" triangular areas that represent the area between the edges of the original image and the horizontal and vertical edges of the canvas. I would like to fill these spaces so it is not obvious that the image was rotated. How can I do this?
What is the standard way to manipulate images in this manner?

Jan 8, 2013I'm just beginning to use Gimp with my Thinkpad x230. It's got a pressure sensitive stylus with eraser to use on the screen, and in ubuntu it's basically an on-screen wacom.
One of the greatest things about this is that I can use Gimp like a souped up sketchpad, I can automatically change tools to eraser whenever I spin the pen around.
The only problem is that whenever I change the brush size for the pencil, then move over to eraser, Gimp uses the brush size I selected for the pencil for the eraser tool. This is super annoying in practice. Is there a way for Gimp to memorize which brush size I want for a given tool?
GIMP :: How To Make Other Tools Move
Sep 10, 2012I have a question for tools in GIMP. Now I see that the tool moves in a certain grid. Now, I want the other tools to move like that too. What I'm saying is that the pencil tool moves by pixels in my document. Since I like to do pixel art, it'd be nice if the other tools also moved like that, by pixel not free form. I'm working on a 32x32 grid and it's good that the pencil moves like that. I just want other tools to move like the pencil, pixel by pixel, now it might be different pixel movement for me since I have my grid set up at 4x4 spacing, I'm a newbie at GIMP and would like if you can answer this question.
How do I make other tools move like the tool. My grid's set up at 4x4 and the pencil moves pixel by pixel. I like that how can I get other tools to move like that?? I just noticed grid doesn't matter, but I want to make other tools move like the tool.
GIMP :: Brush Size Between Tools
Jun 13, 2012I'm having an issue when I go back and forth between my paint brush tool and my eraser tool. Ever since I got 2.8 installed, the brush size is the same for all tools. When I had 2.6, if I was working with my paint brush and had it at a small brush size, then turned my pen over to the eraser and I would have that tool's brush size to be much bigger. I wouldn't have to keep on adjusting the size every time I flipped my pen. Ever since I got 2.8, I've had to keep on adjusting the brush size because the brush size stays the same, and doens't stay set for each tool. I'm using windows 7, am using an intous4 tablet and pen, had installed the latest wacom update, the latest gimp obviously with what I believe to be the binary and source code.

Mar 6, 2012I like to use keyboard shortcuts in GIMP to select different tools or to nudge an image, but I frequently click on the layers window, which causes keyboard shortcut commands to then be directed to the layers window. So whenever I click to select a different layer or do anything with layers, afterwards I always have to have to click on the image window again to regain use of my editing keyboard shortcuts.
Because of this, I also often forget that layers window has focus and end up messing up my layers with key-shortcut commands intended for the image window. Is there some change I can make to my workflow or keyboard bindings to avoid this problem?

Jun 11, 2011I use the GIMP all the time and I love it! I'm not a realexpert, but can do mostly what I like.
I'm using Gimp 2.6 on Ubuntu. I open the GIMP, and I'm going along just fine, then all of a sudden I can't get the dialog box for a tool I'm using and I can't view the layers tool box. If I close everything and open GIMP again, it will work for a while.
GIMP :: Images Breaking Up When Zooming And Artifacts When Using Tools?
Jan 21, 2013i've got a strange problem: when zooming images in the GIMP (2.8.2, installed from archlinux [extra]), viewing them larger than the size they are being automatically zoomed to by default, they break up into unconnected, rectangular tiles.
moving (panning) them around with the mouse so that they partially leave the screen brings those parts back to be displayed properly. means i have to 'swivel' the image across all borders to get it to display properly.
in addition, applying scissors or path tool leaves artefacts on the image that can be removed the same way.
i've noticed this first with the development version of GIMP (2.9, compiled from GIT) and thought those were the new GIMP's growing pains -- but then i noticed the same happening with the stable version (2.8).
i've tried switching to an earlier version of xf86-video-ati and to an earlier kernel, but neither rectifies the problem. i also tried different options in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ 20-radeon.conf, whith the same result, i.e., none.
seems to have something to do with the image being refreshed, or not being refreshed, but which part of the system is at fault baffles me.
i'm using arch +testing, and here are my system's details:
