GIMP :: Cannot Get Added Layer To Show Slightly Transparent
Aug 15, 2012
I cannot get an added layer to show slightly transparent. I like the effect of bringing the main layer to the front and having most of the focus there with a slightly transparent layer for text, etc. Every time I try to use the transparent/opaque slider in the layer panel, it does nothing until I cross the 50% threshold and then the layer just disappears if I go below 50%. I originally had a .gif, but I tried saving it as .png, and .xcf (gimp file) and it still would not work.
Interestingly, I tried it on another .png I had and it worked. Why would it not work sometimes and then work other times? I have attached an example file. I wam trying to make the new layer with text slight transparent.
EDIT: it will not let me upload the file, it eeps saying "undefined", but if you want an example of what I'm doing check out [URL] ...., my website with previous example of slightly transparent layers made in paint.net
I have a Photoshop file with a transparent background and when I place it on the Illustrator against a colored background, it's still transparent on the screen, but when I print it, the transparent part comes out slightly white.
If I have a black background, and I make a new layer that is transparent. Then if I put a filter>nature>flame on the transparent layer, it's not as good looking, as if I put the flame directly on the black background. Why is that? Annoys me a lot, for I can't make good pictures because of this, since I can't use layers to make it more "deep looking"
Basically, I was working on a drawing in GIMP, and the paintbrush tool would not work on a transparent layer. I had one layer under it, which was white and had my drawing. The brush would work on that layer, but not the transparent layer above it. I tried with my Wacom Tablet and my mouse pad and neither worked. What else was peculiar was that I could use the Pencil Tool on the transparent layer.
I sell a template that has a transparent layer in sections, after saving as jpeg it is supposed to go white, but for some of my customers it recently started going black!I at first thought it had to do with not pasting the layers correctly, but its like this after export, so I don't think that should matter...I've attached a sample image so you can see what is happening. Where it is black, it was originally transparent around the circle image, and normally would save white.
With Gimp 2.8 (Mac) I have made a 3D text with a YouTube tutorial. It looks like the Pulp Fiction logo. [URL]...........
How do I overlay a grungy texture, so the letters look 'older'?I tried making the texture image the top layer in the list on the right and then this: right click -> layer -> transparency -> color to alpha. But then, the 'see-through' texture covers the entire square transparent background! Not just the letters...So, how do I add a transparent texture layer over a shaped image that has a transparent background?
I'm writing down some names & seeing how they'd look like when I use a different font but just now, I've realized that the text slightly blurs when it's rotated.

Rotated: [URL]
I know this isn't much of a big deal but I'm just wondering if there is a way to prevent the blurring or anything like that. I tried 'sharpening' the selection but as far as I'm concerned, it didn't change anything.
I'm trying to crop a rectangle that is slightly off square, so the cropping rectangle is either clipping part of the image or not enough of the empty space. Is there a way to clip a non-rectangular area?
The images are actually parts of a map as a specific projection, and need to be clipped non-rectangular so they match up.
I am trying to combine these two images (I want to keep the very top of the first image but I like the second image better...there is just not enough of her hand). How would I be able to accomplish this while also getting the perspectives to match up? I can get the hand looking ok, but then the rest of the image is funky because nothing else matches.
In my part, there was already an existing Engineering note.
I wanted to add another note. I added my new note, but it does not show up in the browser. I can right click on the note note > Display note and both notes are shown in the engineering notebook. When I exit out of the notebook and go back to Inventor, still not there. Here is a short video of what I am seeing.
[URL]. The "Rev B" noteis the original one and Note 2 is the one that I just added.
Now I if I add another note, then all of them will show up in the browser. This is not the first time that I have seen this, but just thought I would bring this up.
This part was just made with a copy design from Vault. What is weird, is that if I go to the part that this was copied from and add the note, it shows up correctly then. Its like something is getting hosed in the copy design process.
I want to add Noise (Filter > Noise > Add Noise) to a layer, after "Style" is added to the layer. I see no noise on the layer regardless how much noise, i add.
My quest: if your in a different layer working on adding walls for eg. You want add a dimension to that wall. When I hit DLI, How do I make sure that the dim i just entered goes directly to the DIM layer instead of the wall layer.
I have this issue where I have to merge lots of layers in order to finish the job. Thing is that two of them have layer styles added to them. Each one has two different layers styles added to it. If I try to merge the layers, the effect won't stay the same and only one layer style will apply (and not even this one works correctly).
I am trying to create a photo collage by scratch (not using "Collage"). First I create a new blank page for the background and save it. It is shown as "locked" with a padlock. Then I open an image file (.jpg) to add to the background layer, and I get a message that I need to unlock the background layer so I click to unlock it. However the added image locks onto the background layer and doesn't make a new layer. If I open another image file it locks on top of the others.
Today i opened a psd file which 200 layers. Paint.net is very slow then (as all layers are flatten, pdn is missing hierarchical layers), but that is another problem.
I wanted to hide some background layers and "copy merged" a selection.
It took me 10mn to find all the backgrounds layers without this tool.
In photoshop the tool exist as a property of the "move selection" tool. Ie: you must first select the move selection tool, then select "layer" in the properties toolbar.
Any way to get that for v4 ? Will v4 be on github so we can clone and make patches ?
I have an image with several layers. The background layer is transparent. When I merge the layers, the background becomes white. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong or didn't do that prevented my background from staying transparent.
When i click on the green line has you can see on the image. The layer toolbar wont show me the right layer, like if it's not working. But i can see the right layer inside propreties.
Is there a system variable to ajust to see my layers inside the Layer tool bar?
I have been painting a 3d model in photoshop cs6 but I appear to have some kind of bad setting (which I am at wit's end trying to find out) which causes any 2d layer I try to merge down onto the 3d layer to be projected with some very large amount of transparency.
I created an oval logo from scratch. Its a gif. I saved it using the "save for web" option under the File menu. I use this logo for our website. As long as the logo is placed on a page with a light background it looks ok. But when I put it on a page with a darker background, the image is outlined in white. Its getting very frustrating. This is happening with any image that i give an transparent background.
I need to create pattern using a simple shape and a background colour – the catch is they both need to be exactly the same colour.
For example ideally I would like to lower the transparency of the shape to around 30% so it’s lighter. Then put down a completely opaque background colour and move the shape onto the background. Logically I understand that making the shape transparent means it won’t show up on a background that is opaque... The only other option I've found is adjusting the colour saturation however this seems to have the same affect as it being transparent. There must be an adjustment option that I don't know about?
Flipping the idea vice versa seems to be no problem, having a 30% transparency on the background colour and an opaque shape works well however this isn’t what I’m trying to do.
I know it’s possible as I’m trying to replicate a pattern background we already use. Unfortunately I only have the screen shot jpeg of the background that has been OK to use on small designs in the past. Now I’m attempting to re-create it properly as a vector so I can blow it up to 2metres x 1metre for an exhibition stand without worrying about pixelating.
I created some buttons in Illustrator CC that have a white background and rounded corners. When I Save for Web as a Gif, I checked Transparency. However, the rounded corner area show a black background around each corner. When I save for the web,do I need to choose something else in the Matte and Transparency dropdown menus?
I have a GIF image that I need to add something to, but I don't want to add it to every single individual layer. Is there a way to add it over or behind the entire GIF so that it remains static while the GIF's frames cycle - like a watermark or something?
Or if not, is there maybe a script-fu that copies and merges a selected layer over every other individual layer automatically, without messing them up?
I know I'll probably have to just end up manually adding it to each layer, (so many layers...).
How do I make the edges of the top layer blend in with the bottom layer so you cannot tell that there is a line??? I want to make it look like a heart but I don't know how to smoothen the edges to make it look like it is part of the bottom layer so when I merge the layers there is no goofy lines looking like someone cropped another fire picture out...
