GIMP :: Auto-load To Desktop On Boot-up?
Aug 20, 2011
How do you get Gimp to auto-load to the desktop on boot-up, in "Fedora-14", and in XP..?
Why does Gimp's resizing a pix always eventually fail intermittently in Fedora-14..?
I resize all my pix edits to 11-inches, to fit the screen properly.. After Gimp has resized about seven pix, on the next one, I delete the numbers after the decimal after the "11", and hit OK, but the numbers I deleted after the decimal all come back..
I must return to "Printsize", delete the whole height number, and key-in "11" for it to save the number of my choice..
How do I configure Gimp so it will resize pix without this glitch?..
Does Gimp bulk resize a collection of images?..
How do you make a HUGE Gimp-brush for color-painting extremely large areas?..
Can the user customize the default brushes?..
Is there a solid brush that the user can use to configure the angles the planes of the brush touches edits..? Would be sweet if one could touch the cursor to a spot on the brush, and twist it to the optimum position for the task, like how Fedora's color wheel changes its desktop background screen colors...
Will Gimp bulk resize a thousand pix edits to one height size..?

I have a .dll that uses registry entries to load itself when AutoCAD starts. But I have encountered a problem where it also loads even
When a customer chooses to load another AutoCAD plugin by another vendor. I would like it ideally only to be loaded when the user clicks on my desktop shortcut.
I am writing in VB.net & have noticed some vendors use a reference to object.arx in their shortcut. Is it possible to do this with a vb.net .dll or even a lisp?

Before migrating to a new computer, when I clicked to open PS CS3, Bridge would automatically open (as I had programmed in the preferences). Now I am getting an error message that the beta is no longer available. I payed for the upgrade to PS CS3 extended. I can click on the Bridge icon in the system tray and Bridge opens just fine. I have uninstalled all previous versions of PS. I deactivated the old PS on the older computer and re-activated it on the new computer. I can't find out where I need to go to get rid of the error.

what is the best method to take 2-3 pictures from the internet and combine them together to make an image 1920x 1080 wide for desktop backgrounds? These are the steps I am following below and what I am having problems with.
1. I go to "canvas size" and make it 1920x 1080.
2. I then move in an image. I right click on it and click "Scale Image" so I can resize it to 1080 height and 960 widthso I have room to add one more picture. The problem is when I click on the image in the dialog box it has the original pixel dimensions of the background 1920x1080 even though obviously it is a lot less then that. Look at the attached picture. I already chose the desktop to be those dimensions but when I right click on the picture it still gives the desktop dimensions even though when you look at the ruler it is a lot smaller.

I get no error messages, no console messages. Just fails within a split second of trying to run.
What is gimp-console-x.x.exe?
I tried running both with verbose and this is the output:. note gimp returns instantly, having died? gimp-console blocks, after mentioning it would load script-fu. Does this imply it crashed there?

Why do fonts take awhile to load in Gimp? it even has in parenthesis (this may take awhile) usually it is a mere 30 seconds, but if I just install ONE new font into the system, I might as well take time to type this...
Why are loading Fonts in Gimp time consuming?

I took up the program to facilitate completion of a small project for a 16-year old daughter that's making an incredible recovery from a serious illness. I provide this background because I'm currently "a bit" impatient - and I'm HOPING GIMP can be used to get this done. What we're looking at is a VERY small "Heart Locket" our daughter was given at birth. What I'm looking to do is create "photo masks" for my wife and my faces so we can "craft" the photos in the requisite size (~1/8"x1/8") and shape (heart)! So far I've succeeded in importing a photo I'd taken of the Locket's interior with a Macro Lense at a "workable size," such that the finished "mask" can be scaled to match the photos we're using, then scaled down to final size in photographic process. And while I'm VERY impressed with Path Tool, I CAN'T find a way to eliminate the tedium of "hand-smoothing" the result. I actually found a plugin that'd been developed for this purpose in 2009, but fails to install because it's looking for (what I have to assume is) an older dll. I CAN'T be unique in this need, can I?

I can't get a simple script.scm to load a file, put it in a layer, add the layer to the active image and call it a day. My ultimate objective is to paste the same .png on top of every picture (about 70 of them) in batch mode. In order to feed the "load this particular file as a layer" command to Batch Image Manipulation plug-in, it has to be a script.
Despite a great deal of time on the internet looking for the proper syntax of gimp-load-layer, I could not find a single explanation to the "filename" parameter. Is it an absolute path? If relative, of what and where? If absolute, what's the proper syntax: do I put quotes, slash or backslash, one or two slash after C:? When I try to run my script, I get the error "Execution error for 'Test': Error: ( : 1) Invalid type for argument 2 to gimp-image-insert-layer, which I take to mean what I'm trying to feed it isn't a layer, which means the gimp-load-layer operation failed.
My stupidly simple and obstinately not working "script-fu-test.scm" is as follows:
(define (script-fu-test image drawable)
(let*
(
(position -1)
(back-layer nil)
)
(set! back-layer(gimp-file-load-layer RUN-NONINTERACTIVE image "C:/Test/test.png"))
(gimp-image-insert-layer image back-layer -1 position)
[code]......

I am doing a process which means that I have to repeat filters and it's a slow process to keep opening the filters tab, then the recently used tab, then the filter.
I was wondering if there is a way to load the 'recently used' up onto the main tool bar so that it would be possible to go straight to it.
Specifications: Ubuntu Unity3D
Or maybe drag the 'recently used' to a separate tool bar of it's own?

I find that if I have some video that has poor color, if I grab a still from it and bring it into GIMP, GIMP does a good job on correcting it.
Now, I'd like to know what color correction settings were applied by that filter so that I can go back to my video editing package and apply similar color corrections across the entire video clip, not just the still.

I downloaded/installed the PPA for Gimp 2.9.1. It worked great for the first half dozen 16-bit tiffs.I use a few RAW converters to create these tiff tiles, RawTherapee, UFRAW, and the Sony software supplied with my A700 DSLR, Image Data Converter running through Wine.
At any rate, most of the tiffs I create now cause Gimp to crash when opening new files. I get this message: Plug-in crashed: "file-tiff-load" and Opening '/home/caruso/Desktop/PHOTOS from IDC/DSC06219.tif' failed:
Files created previously continue to open as normal.
I was so thrilled to have succeeded in installing 2.9.1 on my system, but now may have to uninstall it and fall back to 2.8.x.I realize that 2.9.1 is experimental and unstable, but would like to know if this is something simple that can be fixed.

This is my first experience with GIMP.
I'm ready to start organizing my dad's pictures. As from now I have 1330 pic's scanned and I want to enhance them. I found out that a lot of pics need to have a new White Balance. To do this one by one will take me a year. So, the question is: How to manipulate this "auto white balance" for a lot of selected pictures?

I have noticed that using "Stretch Contrast" gives a much more contrasty image than using the "White Balance" option. Isn't it supposed to be the other way round based on the description?
I'm using the GIMP 2.8.0 for Windows.
Also "Stretch Contrast" is very close to "Normalize" and "Normalize" does seem to shift color in exactly the same way as the "Stretch Contrast" option, although based on the description, it shouldn't.

I am trying to load single pages from multi page tiffs, convert them to monochrome (dithered), flatten the image, then save them as single monochrome, ccitt group4 tiffs. - all through scripts.
The multipage tiffs contain pages in grayscale and color which were created using the old style (problematic) JPEG compression option.
I have tried other tools, such as libtiff (modified with a patch to handle the old jpeg compression), and the latest version of imagemajick. Unfortunately they cannot correctly convert the files, whereas gimp can, but only one page of the multi-page tiff at a time(gimp crashes if I load a 5page document (as separate images) then convert each image to monochrome, flatten and save in one session)
the scripting function for loading tiffsfile-tiff-load does not expose the options to load individual pages, or to select loading as images or as layers, which the visual file load/import does.
How I can achieve this using a script.? Manually is not a problem, but too time consuming for large (eg. 200page) tiffs.

I've found that, upon boot, Photoshop takes 7 minutes to load. During this time, it stops for a LONG time on "Finding Plugins" and "Building TWAIN Menu List...".
Through much trial and error, I have found that if you ~ out the beginning of a folder name, PS will not load the contents on boot.
So I renamed:
C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop CSPlug-InsImport-Export
(which contains just TWAIN_32.8BA)
to
C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop CSPlug-Ins~Import-Export
AND RENAMED
C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop CSPlug-InsAdobe Photoshop OnlyAutomate
to
C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop CSPlug-InsAdobe Photoshop Only~Automate
AND RENAMED
C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop CSPlug-InsAdobe Photoshop Only~AutomateOnline Services
to
C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop CSPlug-InsAdobe Photoshop Only~Automate~Online Services
With this done, PS Cold Boots in 12 seconds, and warm boots in about 6-7. (AMD XP 1800 1.5Ghz, 1024MB DDR, Windows XP Pro).
I noticed that if you goto START > RUN > 'SERVICES.MSC' That the WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition) Service is not started. WIA sounds like something PS would need to capture my Twain Compliant Scanner (Microtek SlimScan C6 US. Well, I tried to start it, but it times out, so I don't know if that's my problem or not.
If I dont' ~ out any folder names, PS DOES LOAD (after 7 minutes), but when I goto FILE > IMPORT > Microtek SlimScan (32bit)..., it takes another 2 MINUTES to bring up the ScanWizard for import into PS. Once I scan, the image comes in fine. But this is just WAY TOO LONG. Something is holding it up.
Also, when I don't ~ out folder names, I get all the commands on FILE > AUTOMATE. But when I do ~ out folder names, only 3 show up there. I'm not running any firewalls (software ones), I am behind a router, and am on Comcast Cable. I have NO plugins or any other customizations installed aside from the default install.

I have a small niglling issue with my copy of Photoshop CS3 on Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I never use to get.
For the past several months I have had to click the PS icon (usually in my quick launch) several times before photoshop will actually boot up. Sometimes I can get PS to boot up on the first click, sometimes 2 (usually) but other times I have to click it bout 6+ times before I see the PS splash screen and it starts?
However, PS is doing something on this non-booting clicks, cos my Task Manager shows I have several processes of PS running, but they all use significantly less memory than the actual opened PS. So for example, if I had to click 6 times, the one that is open may be using 71k, but all the other ones will be using 4k, I then manually stop those processes and PS works fine.
This isn't a major problem cos I can get PS to boot and function as it is suppose to, but it its somewhat annoying when I have to keep doing this process everytime I want to run PS.
My specs (incase its needed) are:
Windows Vista Ultimate Retail x64
Intel Q9550 @ 3.6GHz
4GB PC2-8500 Corsair Dominator Ram
1x 150GB WD Velociraptor 10,000RPM HDD
1x 1TB Samsung F1 HDD
ATi 4870x2 2GB Graphics Card
Also, incase it matters, I have a copy of Flash CS3 installed too, both PS and Flash are 100% legimate copies.

Photoshop CS will take approximately 7 minutes to boot if I don't goto:
C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop CSPlug-ins
And place a ~ in front of the Imports & Exports folder (a ~ in front of a folder name will prevent PS from loading that folder's contents on boot)
The only file in this folder is:
TWAIN_32.8BA
Also, I have to goto:
C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop CSPlug-insAdobe Photoshop Only
And ~ out the Automate folder (and the Online folder inside it) or I'll get another extremely long timeout on booting)
Does anyone know how I can re-enable these things?
The "ONLINE" folder got me thinking. I'm using a hardware firewall and a software firewall. But even when I disable the software one, I still get the long boots.

I have just completed an update of a MacPro 3,1 by adding more RAM, going from 12-20GB of RAM, adding a 240GB SSD that is less than half full vs 7200rpm 1TB boot drive. I've also moved my LR and Bridge cache off the boot drive to a 60GB SSD eSata Raid 0 setup. I have increased my PS allocated RAM up to 71% of my total RAM or about 14GB, History state is set at 20 levels and cache levels @ 6 and cache blocks at 1024k. PS scratch is set to the internal SSD boot drive.
But PS CS5 is experiencing random slow downs and total stops where we can not do anything, including exiting the app. Mouse will work but we can not run actions or use tools then all of a sudden it just snaps out of it but it will still be slow. We can then quit PS and relaunch and for awhile it will be fine.
Is this possibly a RAM issue?

Because OS 10.8.2 was the worst update in Apple history, for the first time ever I decided to do the 10.8.3 update on an external boot disk before sacrificing my internal disk. I used Super Duper to make a bootable clone of my internal , booted from the external and then did the combo update.
The first app I tried was Photoshop CS 5.1. It tried to open but I got a window that said "could not inialize scratch disk because disk could not be found". After I clicked OK on that, another window said "could not open because disk could not be found" . I have never tried to open Photoshop any version from a bootable backup before and I don't know what this means. The scratch disk for Photoshop is set to be my internal drive Macintosh HD.
Why would it not find it? If I were booting from my internal and had set the scratch to the external it would find it. Why would the app be looking for itself on another disk?
After recloning my internal which is still 10.8.2, I have not yet booted from the external to see if the problem was somehow caused by 10.8.3, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. People have reported the usual weird behavior of an upgrade already on forums, but not this paricular problem
