GIMP :: Can't Type In Numeric Values If Scale / Rotate Selection
May 16, 2012
I notice with GIMP 2.8 that I can't type in numeric values if I want to scale/rotate/etc. a selection. I can use the mouse to manipulate my selection freely, but I'm pretty out of luck if I want an exact value (though I know that I can hold Ctrl for certain snapping, which is extremely useful).

Is there a plugin that allows real-time rotate/scale of a selection (like in photoshop) ? The way it works stock is the only annoying thing in gimp that makes my work unnecessarily harder.

I have a map of a city which is segmented into different areas (based on post code boundaries). i have 5 sets of data for each area and was wondering how to display this data. one way is to present an image for each set of data. lets say the data is numbers of people. is there a way how I can relate the density of a co lour to the actual numeric value? e.g . very light yellow for 10 people, darker for 90 people and dark yellow for 350 people ( i would prefer a more defined range!!). Also, how might I use speckled colors?

I'm using cs6 and I want to rotate and scale individual letters. Whenever I try to do it I am only altering the text box. Is there any way I can do the same thing with the text itself without rasterizing it?

I have numeric values [St_NUMB] I'm adding as labels. I see that Map is converting them to strings [TOSTRING"(ST_NUMB)"]. The ST_Numb refers to a street number for a a house, and any outbuildings are labels as '0' (zero) since they are not technically an addressable structure. I have a large amount of data with a value of '0' (zero) that I would like to filter out of the labels. I'm really not sure what expression or command is the simplest to use.

How can I move (rotate or otherwise transform) a Selection.
1. Suppose I have a single Layer, on which I draw an image.
2. Now I activate a Selection Tool (Rectangular, Elliptical, Lasso, etc.) and make a Selection.
3. Then I activate the Move Tool and click on the "Move Selection" option, not the "Move Layer" option. [Oddly, when the "Move Selection" option is activated, there are two greyed out (unavailable) sub-options, both indication "Move Selection".]
4. With the Move Tool, I am able to move the Selection, but not the contents of that Selection.
The Gimp Documentation guide says:"If you click-and-drag the selection without handles, you create a new selection! To move the selection contents, you have to hold down Ctrl+Alt keys and click-and-drag the selection. This makes the original place empty. A floating selection is created. The required key commands may differ on your system, look in the status bar to see if another combination is specified; for example, Shift+Ctrl+Alt."
I have tried every combination of Shift, Ctrl and Alt (Shift+Ctrl, Ctrl+Alt and Shift+Alt). None of these allow me to move the contents of the selection. Further, there are no "handles" on the Selection. I suppose the key is to get the handles to appear, but I have not been able to discover the secret combination of keys to make that happen.
I am running Windows XP Pro.

How can I scale a selection fast and easy within a python-script, so fast as I would do within the Gimp-interface: Toolbox->Scale->set Transformation to Selection->scale the selection and ready...
First I have tried
sel = pdb.gimp_selection_save(myImg)
pdb.gimp_item_transform_scale(sel,...)
pdb.gimp_image_select_item(myImg,0,sel)
But it takes some seconds! (gimp interface method needs milliseconds).
When I omit the first step (no selection_save first), then there will be a floating selection, and that isn't really what I want.

I'm trying to scale a pattern to fit the entire canvas without tiling it over the whole layer. To try to do this, I made a rectangular selection box, then dragged and dropped a pattern into the box. This created a new layer called "clipboard". I right clicked the clipboard layer, then left clicked "Scale Layer". Then I entered a width and height in pixels that matched the size of the canvas. The selection does expand, but it doesn't fill the entire canvas.

I'm running Design and Web Premium CS6 on a Windows 7 machine. I was recently using Ai's Recolor Artwork dialogue for a CMYK document. I wanted to convert my 4 color artwork to Pantone solid coated. I decided to chose some different Pantones. In older versions of Illustrator I could easily open the Color Picker, click on a Pantone value and then just type in a new value to scroll to it. This is no longer the case with Ai CS6.

Is there a way to select pixels in Photoshop based on given Lab values? I am using Select --> Color Range with a specified "fuzziness" threshold, but I'd rather make the selection based on specific Lab values instead of random pixels that I choose with my eye dropper. Is there a way to do this in Photoshop, or does anyone know of a plug-in that might do this?

what the technique is called when you swap the values of two of the colors within a selection?
For example, let's say that we have a nice pinkish color for something... but you don't want pinkish. This would keep things looking relatively nice, simply by swapping all the red values with the blue values, giving you nice lavender-ish color instead. Or perhaps swapping blue with green values, giving you a more orange-y color.

I'm trying to rotate text inside an text area type. That is, rotate the text (so its e.g. 30 degrees going across the screen), but the area it is within does not rotate.
Everything I try when rotating rotates the entire area + the text in side, which makes the positioning of the shape my text is in wrong.I am after being able to change the inside text angle and content whenever needed.

I thought there was a way to insert an image (tif) to model space, and adjust it like you would any line or polygon. Apparently this is not the case. When I attach an image, where I place it is permanent and I can't even select it.

When I'm editing pix, and need a quick large solid brush for a couple seconds, (1-inch dia), I slide "scale", but it's nearly impossible to manually rest scale back to default without restarting Gimp...
Can there be a dot-button beside scale that auto-sets scale back to default..? and/or a timer on scale changes that resets scale back to default after ten-seconds..?

What I am trying to do is create a selection set of the "y" values of text. I've started by pulling out all the text on the drawing, but I need it to continue to grab only the "y" values of the text on the drawing.
(setq alltext (ssget "_x" (list '(0 . "TEXT"))
)
)
I've tried a bunch of different things but I am still new to lisp.

I'm working in the fashion industry where we are creating a lot of patterns and textile designs.transform pattern inside a vector shape without having to move the vector object :
To transform patterns but not objects when using a transform tool, hold down the tilde key (~) while dragging. The borders of the object appear to be transformed, but when you release the mouse button, the borders snap back to their original configuration, leaving only the pattern transformed. URL..
It seems this shortcut works only with US and UK keyboard.
I'm using a french keyboard where it doesn't work, probably because there is'nt any key especially dedicated to the Tilde sign (~), and you need to combine multiple keys to get this symbol (Alt GR + the key 2 above the key Z) .
I finally found the shortcut on MAC which is the keyboard key with the britisih pound sterling symbol (£). But not on PC !!!how to get this shortcut on PC with a french keyboard ?
Is there a way to change the shortcut for this very useful option, without having to take care of the kind of keyboard ?

I'm drawing a small map, and in several places there is text rotated so as to fit next to a slanted line. The problem comes when I decide to move the text, usually along a line parallel to itself, or perhaps in some other direction.
As far as I can tell, the only way to select the text is with the lasso tool, which can be very difficult, because of the close tolerances. Maybe the easiest way is simply to erase the text and re-create it. So, is there some way to rotate the selection box, so I can grab the slanted text easily?

I have been working on a project in illustrator and all of a sudden, I couldnt use the selection tool to rotate and manipulate objects anymore. The arrows don't even show up to make that sort of action. Is there some way that I accidentally turned off the tool? If so, how do I turn it back on so I can work with it the way it was before?

I have the below code (from a user here on the forum) which works great for aligning text, mtext and blocks to 2 points. For annotative entities, it respects the rotation angle for mtext and text.
ie I have an mtext object at 1"=20' scale and at 1"=40' scale. I run the command when the current annotative scale is 1"=40'. The object at 40' scale has changed, but the 20' scale is unchanged. This is working as I would like it to.
But for annotative blocks, it gets weirded out. In the above example, the block at 40' will rotate, but so will the attributes at 20' scale. But linework and hatching at 20' scale will be unchanged. it looks really weird. how to get it to play nice with blocks. Ideally, I'd like the block to be at different rotation angles in different annotative scales.
(defun C:R2P (/ ss ang edata); = Rotate objects to align with 2 Points (setq ss (ssget '((0 . "*TEXT,INSERT"))) ang (angle (getpoint "
First alignment point: ") (getpoint "
Second alignment point: ")) ) (repeat (sslength ss) (setq edata (entget (ssname ss 0))) (entmod (subst (cons 50 ang) (assoc 50 edata) edata)) (ssdel (ssname ss 0) ss) ))

Right after one makes a selection, say by using the Rectangle SelectTool, is presented with handles that allow altering the selection.
If one then selects another tool without deselecting is being deprivedof these handles while the selection remains active thus rendering himunable to alter the selection in that fashion.
Thus forming my question: is there a way to make these handles to(re-)appear on a non-freshly created selection?

I just installed CS6. I have found a resizing problem that seems to exist relating to both objecgts and type.
For example, I was changing the leading in some text. I typed in 11.8 and the next thing I know the leading is set as 2 pts. I have changed other thiings within the text window and had the type rescale its width. It is a bit like "whack-a-mole" in that you fix one thing and it resets something else.
When I have typed in numbers to proportionately resize an object, the next thing I know, the computer makes it much smaller. If I hit command-Z to try to get back to where I started, it resizes it in even increments (like .125" or something).
Is this some kind of maddening helper function (like the spelling correction in mail program) that can be turned off?

I've got a type layer, and I want to move a certain selection of type, but it seems to only want to move the entire layer. Here's what I've got:
I want to move the "Web Developer" type so that it's centered under "Gibran Shah". I'm using the Rectangular Marquee Tool to form a rectangle around "Web Developer" and then the Move Tool to move it. When I move it, it moves the entire type layer. How do I get it to move only the selected region.
