AutoCad :: Keep Layers From Being Deleted Or Purged?
May 25, 2012
Is there a way to "lock" layers so that they cannot be deleted or purged from a drawing?
I have a template with all titleblocks, layers, dim styles, and such, all set up. But since there are a small group of layers that are not actually used in the drawing or template they are "purgable" or "deletable". As far as I understand locking the layer locks the geometry to keep it from being edited so it will not work for what I am thinking.

We have a set of standard layers and styles we wish to be in every file. Many users are purge happy. and the these standards many times get purged out.
I have a block I've created that holds all the standard styles and layers which I have turned to an anonymous block. I wish to stick this somewhere that would make it unpurgeable. I thought I'd find another block which normally cannot be purged and place my block inside, but am not certain which one would be best.
where I might place this block to cause it to be un-purgeable?

In my seemingly never-ending battle with standardizing, I have created a template with all the layers I expect to use in the future. The template will be used by both surveyors and engineers so I have layers that won't ever be used by surveyors. What I don't want is the surveyor to purge the drawing and delete all the layers that the engineers will need. I found the link below explaining and .lisp to replace deleted layers.
[URL]
Now, I am completely new at .lisp and how to use them. Also, this template is used in a program called BricsCad (some of the older generation still uses it instead of Autocad) and using .dws and checking isn't an option for them.

I currently working on a drawing which has previously been drawn by somebody else. I probably have 10 different layers within the drawing. However in my layer properties manager I have 37 all of which are turned on unlocked etc. When I try to purge theses layers are not deleted. Is there any reason why I can see theses layers and more importantly erase them?

I have a number of layout tabs with varying layer controls applied in multiple viewports. This layout may be made up of a number of xrefs. I end up with a lot of layers in the host drawing from the xrefs, and even after I purge the xrefs to eliminate some of the xrefs, the layers remain in the host drawing, even though they no longer exist.
Is there any way to update the xref definitions to get rid of the layers without losing the layer setups I have? VISRETAIN is set to 1, and if I reset it to 0, I will lose all of the viewport controls I have put in place.

I found a lisp in an old post and I edited it alittle with my own layers to have it change to but when I use it, it doesn't deleted the extra layers. It says layer cannot be deleted. Below is part of the code that I am using, I didn't copy all of them since there are alot of layers in the lisp that I added. maybe I copied something wrong I am not sure.
{code}
( defun c:FIXMYLAYERS ( / ss_newlayer change_en )
( setq layerlist ( list ( cons "ENB_ROW-1" "ENB-ROW-1" )
( cons "Border_Condoc_DwgMgmt_Large$0$G-ANNO-TTLB" "DefPoints" )
( cons "Border_Condoc_DwgMgmt_Large$0$G-ANNO-TTLB-LOGO" "DefPoints" )
( cons "Border_Condoc_DwgMgmt_Large$0$G-ANNO-TTLB-NPLT" "DefPoints" )

I got the below warning today for one of my AI files that I was working on yesterday. The file had several layers that had been worked on for a number of days. I know that I shut the application down correctly yesterday, but the warning states otherwise. I had another file open yesterday and it is fine. In this file, all of my layers, except for 4 incomplete layers are now gone! I had saved the document several times yesterday, but it is showing none of those saved changes. Is there a way that I can get my file back?

Ive been working on a piece of art for about a week when suddenly i was having some computer issues. I restart my computer and open up my gimp file and a file that previously had three layers now has one layer. The other layers where seemingly deleted, and i don't know why. Ive read another thread on here that was dealing with the same issue yet none of problems or solutions applied to my problem. This did happen one time before and all the layers were deleted, but i just started the project over again. The art i lost was being licensed, and I'm sort of freaking out.

I have been working on a layered PSD file putting together a website visual for a few weeks. Yesterday I went to save a copy of the document and in that process the file went a bit weird and some text changed colour and 5 layers had a portion of them deleted (all photos in the header area, like in the attached image). It's happened twice since yesterday, but can't seem to recreate it.

I have an CAD file with a lot blocks which I don't use. I would like to delete them. So I do "Purge" which took care of some but not all. There are still a lot of "cannot purge" blocks. So I do "Insert", I see about 30 blocks. Choosing one of those, I can edit the block. (Doing the "Insert" was just my beginner's test step to see how many unwant blocks I still have.) I believe they cannot be purged because they are nested.
How can I delete the 'cannot be purged" unused blocks?
I know a lot of the blocks have other blocks nested in them. Is deleting the 'parent' blocks enough for me to purge?

I have attached a simple dwg file with two dimension styles in it. The current style ("standard") is also the default, so it obviously cannot be purged. The other one ("PULL_X"), which is clearly not current, is also not used by anything in the drawing (as far as I can tell), yet it won't purge.why it cannot be purged?

I want to attach an xref of "12015.01 - 69 East Ave BB02", but AutoCAD gives me the following error:
Error: "12015.01 - 69 East Ave BB02" is already a standard block in the current drawing. *Invalid*
First I checked to make sure there were no referenced blocks or xrefs in the drawing. I then attempted to purge the following blocks:
"12015.01 - 69 East Ave BB00"
"12015.01 - 69 East Ave BB01"
"12015.01 - 69 East Ave BB02"
Nothing happens. I click on "View items you cannot purge" and highlight any of those blocks and this is what I get:
This block definition cannot be purged if:
-- It is nested inside another block.
-- It is inserted in the drawing.
-- It is an attached xref drawing.
If I copy and paste the drawing into a new file, the blocks does not copy over, so it is obviously a problem with the file and not the drawing (if that makes any sense). I would simply replace the file, but all of my CD's Xref those three files and I don't have the time to go through and re-insert all of them.

Needed to purge items in a drawing to recover a drawing in order to repair corruption within it it. I purged and audited the drawing in question and then created a block or the drawing elements which I imported to a new drawing sheet. That's great, all is well but.....obviously (now) the only layers, dimscale, etc. items I normally use in my template sheet are gone and only the items remaining after the purge are the ones that were in my original drawing.
How can I, or can I replace my normal full layer list, dim settings, blocks, etc?

I've noticed in my projects, and to a lesser extend in family creation, that when I purge, the files is sometimes larger after the purge than before. This seems counterintuitive.

How to restore families purged from a project? Specifically, a new user purged everything not in use from the model, and is now unable to place a 2x2 ACT ceiling. Drawing one in another file and pasting into the model has no effect. This family is not listed in the Imperial Library; is there some other location for these system families?

How do you constrain an object to the origin once the origin constraint has been deleted. I'm not really sure how it became unconstrained in the first place. When I try to constrain the drawing using the coincident constraint it won't allow me to select the origin.

I have 2 drafters that are working on AutoCAD Map 2002 programs with Windows 7 64 Bit operating systems. When I started back in August I noticed something absolutely bizarre. I have not come across this before so I am now escalating it to you experts.
What is happening is that the drafter will be working on a DWG. They will save multiple times. Even exit the drawing and come back to it the next day. While in the drawing (on the server OR on their computer, doesn't matter) the drawings will occassionally lock up and get the blue wheel. Then it will simply shut down.
Here is the strange part. The drawing file is deleted from the folder. All save points and everything. Just gone. Sometimes a random save file will be created in the same folder. This has saved us a couple times. But more often than not it is simply gone.
I am trying to convince my VP that we need to upgrade our AutoCAD licenses on these 2 machines.

I have a CAD file that will not let me delete layers, get the usual message; "The selected layer was not deleted . . . . ". This is not the current layer, nor is it 0 or Defpoints and I am fairly certain the Layer does not contain objects. As an interesting side note; when running Purge, the Purge zero-length geometry and empty text objects is grayed out. It's not an option.

I have an assembly where I have deleted a component, but it is still linked to the assembly somehow. The part is no longer visible in the model, is missing from the model tree and from the BOM, but it still prompts to save. I have attached screenshots to show what i mean: The file (00017429.ipt) prompting to save, despite not actually being in the assembly (00052857), the parts-only BOM showing that the part is not in the BOM, and the vault tab with the part highlighted.
I don't believe this is vault related because Inventor is prompting to save the 'deleted' file, and pack-and-go also grabs the 'deleted' file.
For the example shown, it is a minor nuisance because it means an extra drawing gets printed when an assembly with this problem gets used. I have just had the same problem happen on another, much more complex assembly and it is causing me major grief.

I was recently updating an assembly which contained a part that had been subsequently deleted from my folders. I skipped it while opening the assembly, then deleted the part in the Model Tree (and replaced it with a different component). So, to summarize, the assembly no longer has the part in the Tree, and the part does not exist anymore on my system. These parts and assemblies have not been Vaulted, so that should not be an issue either.
My problem is that every time I open the assembly, it wants me to resolve this deleted part, and I have to skip it every time just to proceed. Once the file is loaded, I get no other issues, no "red cross" items, just a question mark next to the file name at the top of the Tree indicating that the file needs to be resolved.
The old part is gone; I tried recreating it using the same file name, and using the same third-party SAT file from which it was originally generated, but Inventor detects that it's not the original part and won't accept it.
How to get past this "part resolution" issue?
