AutoCAD Inventor :: Animation Of Thin Copper Wire Being Wound Onto Pulley?
Jan 24, 2012
I'd like to make an animation of a thin copper wire being wound onto a pulley. Is this possible in Inventor? I'm not sure Inventor will allow the thin wire to be bent. I can imagine other ways to make the animation, but I'd much rather have the wire bend around the pulley as the pulley rotates.

I am trying to constrain motion for the following design:
-Object constrained to vertical motion (a counterweight).
-Object constrained to horizontal motion along a track (a slider).
A cable runs from the counterweight upward, makes a 180-degree turn around a pulley, runs back down, makes a 90-degree turn around another pulley, and connects to the slider.
When the weight moves down 10 cm, the slider needs to move laterally 10 cm.I don't care about modelling the cable, but I do need to have the slider move as the weight moves.
I will also need to model a case with a more complicated pulley, where when the weight moves down 10cm the slider moves laterally 5cm (again I don't care about the cable, just the relative motion).
Is there a way I can do this without creating a series of planes and cylinders and using rotation - translation constraints to link the motion of the weight to the slider?

Noticed the images in the reflection from polished copper? In my current model, polished copper is reflecting the image of what looks to be a parking lot, as I see the back end of 3 different cars, ones white and the other two are grey I think. No real issue, just noticed this reflection, looks like the developers were having a little bit of fun on this one, or is there a place this reflection can be changed?

Have a bit of a puzzle that's been bouncing around a bit. Is there a way to delay a object following it's parent for a few frames? For instance, I have a hook attached to a crane that rotates around, the hook following it around. If I could have it follow the crane at a bit of a lag, allowing the cable to curve slightly, it would look a deal more real. I know I could hand animate it, but is there a way to set it up so that the hook will follow the crane after a delay of say, 10 frames or so?

Im trying to wire an object's Z position to a custom attribute. I've frozen transforms, but whenever i wire the zero euler Z position to the attribute, when i control the attribute, i notice that my object is moving relative to world, and not to its position.
I want to move it along its own Z axis, not world axis.

I try to wire the length parameter of a taper object to the local Y-Position values of another object. It works fine until I reload the file. I get an MAXScript Wire Controller Exception error:
--Runtime error: Illegal self-reference in controller script
...and the parameter-wire dialog opens. The desired functionality returns by clicking the Update Button and everything works fine again.

what I do need clarification on is the statement in this warning "One or more bodies which are thing being treated as solids". Does this mean that the bodies that were detected fall under the criteria for being a Midsurface or Offset and that the user has the opportunity to apply these commands in order to make the analysis more accurate? So if I were to ignore this and continue with my analysis, the members will still be treated as a solid and not as a shell and/or surface (which is what the Midsurface/Offset command produces)? The members I am using that have triggered this warning are HSS 2x2x0.125 x 12' long.

I have a pressure vessel which I am trying to analyse. Whenever I convert the solid into 'thin bodies', it loses some of the data. For example, a fillet and a supporting ring (refer to pic attached). I haven't been able to find any 'shell element' settings to adjust.
Also, I need to manually add contacts otherwise the vessel seperates into multiple bodies.
Even though the solid model is in contact, the 'midsurface' shell seperates it. Refer to part file attached.
I briefly tried to run the analysis as a solid model, but gave up as it was taking forever just to mesh.

is it possible to define a 'natural direction' at a pin, in which a wire should start when connected to that pin? This would seem to be natural for me.
As the attached picture shows, my wire is connected at this pin in a weird direction (because I need to route it through the indicated segment).
What is the best strategy to do it correctly?
Another question: I increased the diameter of the segment, hoping that it means that the wires are constrained within the segment, but are free to move withini this. But they all seem to be constrained to the centerline. What I want is that all my wires pass within this 'tube' of 30mm diameter.

Thinwall tubing in the Frame Generator? On a daily basis we use 2x2 sq. Tubing .065 wall.
Everything in there is 3/16 and thicker. We wind up modeling everything and not using the Frame Generator at all
which would reduce design times greatly.

I'm trying to do a stress analysis on assembly with a mixture of thin bodies and solid bodies. The problem is that when I create the automatic contacts they are created as either all thin body or all solid body contacts. This of course causes the analysis to fail. It appears that there is no way to make a thin body contact become a solid body contact or vice versa.
I tried to run the entire thing as solid bodies but the I had to stop the analysis after 18 hours of continuous processing. (and a memory upgrade)

Inventor 2014.
When you measure something with the distance command, according to the type of file, the last zoom you did, your graphic card and probably the speed of the wind, the little red line won't show.
Normally when you measure something, a thin red line is shown were the distance is calculated. But in my laptop, and both pc's of my client, Inventor shows this line only in parts, not in assemblies. I've got a Quadro 2000M, my client got Quadro FX 1700 and 1800, all with the recommended drivers.
So I tried with 3 other laptops. On one of them (with a K2000M) if you do a measure right after the file open, it give you the line, if you zoom with the measure command open, the line disappear and won't show again until you close and open the file again. But if you zoom without the command active, the line is shown normally. But it's not working like that on all machines.

I am having trouble constraining the wire track in the attached picture. I want the track to move naturally when the sliding piece moves, however it folds over on itself and doesn't stay in line. I can't figure out anyway to make it look uniform and move they way it should, is it possible in inventor?

How best to go about creating a "wire mesh". What i have tried is to create a solid flat (2mm thick) piece of material. I then draw a diamond shape on the surface & extrude it so as to give me a void.
Then i use the rectangular pattern option. The problem is that when i try putting in the amounts of the "holes" i need to brings up message to use optimized compute. I do that and then when i click to crate all the "holes" it comes up with a pattern failure error.
What other way can i use to create my object.

I'm working on constructions that are operated with winches. However, I haven't found a way to model the wire so that it moves as it should.
I've attached a simplifed assembly that illustrates my issue.
In the "Master" position the wire looks as it should.
However, in the "Up" position, the wire does not. (red line indicates desired wire path)
I'm not interested in making the wire slack, just to have straight lines and radiuses around the sheave.
The actual constructions are much more complex, with 15+ sheaves and the wire moving in all three dimensions, not just in one plane as in the attached example. So a simple extrude cut on the assembly would not work.
I need the wire to work in the various set positions ("Master", "Up" & "Halfawy up") on an assebly level, so that it can be shown on drawings.
Optimally I'd love it to work in the "Flexible" position, so that it automatically adjusts (in real-time) as I move the rod, but it's not a requirement.
I've found multiple videos on Youtube showing something similar to what I want to accomplish, but no description of how it's done. Examples:
Inventor Simulation - Pulley and Cable.wmv
Winch - Autodesk Inventor (the wire being spooled onto the winch is not required, but it does look nice)

I've modeled a "twisted-in wire brush" and I'm getting graphic/model glitches. Every now and then when I zoom in on the model it becomes an abstract mess. It has something to do with the twisted wire portion of my model. It's just a simple coil (sketch: 2 circles twisted downward) feature but Inventor keeps choking.
Any twisted wire texture that perhaps I could try. I'm not quite sure how to make it myself. Plus, Inventor 2014's entire Material/Appearance library is a real dog's breakfast. What used to be be rather simple for me has become a challenge.

I have an assembly of multi-thickness, thin sheets, essentially welded together. (see image attachment)
One component is composed of land and bay areas, a single planar sheet where the edges are thin, and the central body is thickened.
I can get Inventor to treat the remaining multi-thickness, right angle components as midplane by going with separate bodies.
The top plate is a single planar sheet, and Inventor will not treat it properly as a mid-planed plate.
Will Inventor translate the constraints properly if I build the thin region separate from the central thicker region in order to produce feasible mid-planed mesh?
Question already posted by other in forum - using local control to develop multiple element thicknesses through cross section of plate (by thin face selection), one cannot verify that the smaller elements along the cross section are built properly through the entire component.

Someone has given me a .wire file from Alias. I fired up a new assembly in Inventor but it imported into a part. There are many parts to this design, and I'd rather have them as separate parts. However what I have now is one part with many surfaces (which I can turn on or off). Any tips for bringing it in differently? Maybe I can derive some parts out from my existing part which has about 20 surfaces (which should be parts)?

I'd like to use the Cable and Wiring tools to model some fibre optics. I can see how this could work well, being able to set and check for the minimum bend radius. However, I'd also like to include a loop of greater than minimum bend radius between the two connection points, we tend to do this to reduce strain on the fibres. Any elegant solution for inserting the loop?

My boss asked me to do a part for GibbsCAM which includes a 7/8" left hand wire rope imprint in a block of steel for this afternoon's production. I have my block done, what is the best way to do this? I'm thinking create a wire rope solid to cut out of my block. Would I use the thread tool: that's not the same but would it work?... I don't need a representation. I need the read thing that will work!

Many times, we run several individual wires from one device to another. They are not grouped in a cable jacket or anything just individual wires. I was wondering if there is anyway to make the wire routing look a little neater as right now I have to tweak each wire one by one and many times it looks like crap. Can I use a segment for this and then just turn off the visibility of the segment or something? I just want the wires to look neat running from one place to another and there must be a way to do this?

After I create a wire it will not be displayed as a rendered wire. There is no indication of error in the wire (to sharp angle) and this is also happens for a straight wires with no turns.
I have made multiple revisions of an assembly and in older reviosions I can make the wires and they are shown as rendered. But in the latest revision it is not possible. In a older revision I had a harness assembly than deleted it could this have any affect?
Also is there any setting that hides rendered wires that I might have turned on accidently?I have a student licence and the assembly has about 700 parts if that makes any difference.
