AutoCAD Inventor :: Setup Sliding / No Separation Contact Within And Assembly For FEA
Mar 21, 2012
I'm trying to set up a sliding/no separation contact within and assembly for FEA purposes. I want to eliminate all moments (torque) between two pieces while still allowing one to impart force on another. When evaluating constraints, I'm seeing moments are infect being passed through. The guide mentions this contact for planer and cylindrical objects but makes no reference to spherical surfaces.
Is it possible to accomplish this type of a contact on spherical surfaces?

Look at the attached snips. The assembly icon is strange to me. and I can not
set it as a contact set because it is greyed out. Is there any way to set this as a contact set?

When we use the Productivity/Add Assembly functionality, it produce a Weldment Assembly instead of a Standard Assembly.
How do we change the setup to use a Standard Assembly?

In our drawing office we use Inventor in a mining materials handling environment. Our output is mainly structural drawings where we require a bill of materials as part of creating a drawing. Whenever I insert a BOM in the drawing environment I get this table which is labeled in a foreign language (it looks like an Eastern European language) and the format is not as per the standard Autodesk installation setup.
How do I either revert back to the standard setup or do a BOM setup from scratch?
We use IV 2013 Professional on Windows 7 64 bit.

I'm trying to apply the right constraint in stress analysis environment.
How would I apply the right constraint? And to which face of the wheel or axle should I apply the constraint to get right results.
If I'm applying the sliding connection to the face of the wheel in z direction, the model will stop stress analysis with an error of "not enough constraints"
if I apply the sliding constraint to the inside of the wheel on the surface of the circle, I get the result as attached. I get 0 reaction in the Z direction which is wrong and should be zero reaction in x direction. How do I get it right?
The correct way to me would be a constraint that would only take forces in the -Y direction, same direction as gravity.
The wheel should not have any other reaction than in the Y direction. Hoe do I define that constraint? In my model the wheel are free to rotate on the axle.
I'm attaching both the general arrangement and the reaction report.

I have an issue with a sliding joint in a simulation. Here we have a very simple box with a cylinder that slides around a closed loop curve. The curve as you will see is described by two circles and one elipse that all overlap to give a smooth closed loop. In the assemble this all works fine - you can freely drag the cylinder around the curve. However in dynamic simulation when I try to insert a 'sliding cyclinder on curve' joint I get the message that only lines, arcs and splines can be used for a curve. If I change the elipse to another circle then I don't have this problem. So is Inventor restricted to arcs of circles rather than arcs of elipses? Is there a way around this?, Do have I have to draw the whole curve as a spline?

I've got a chain that runs between two sprockets. In between the sprockets is a slider that needs to be attached to the chain so that the rolling of the chain moves the slider back and forth.Right now the chain just runs straight through the slider, it isn't connected at all. I can't find any way to tell Inventor that this slider is connected to the chain.

Why is a part in an assembly not enabled for contact set? on right click the Contact Set option is grayed out, but that part was in contact set for another part already. i made some changes in the part, maybe that's the reason, is it?

I'm working on a FEA of a climbing carabiner (oval-shaped; one side of the oval is a gate which opens and closes allowing a rope into the carabiner).
The gate of the 'biner has a hook which attaches to the "nose" of mainbody/biner. However, this hook does not engage until the biner slightly deforms.
I've attempted to use the separation/no sliding contact option, but the solver behaves as if there is no contact occuring. The nose simply passes right through the gate hook.
The initial gap of the system is about 0.040". That means the nose must deflect 0.040" before the contact surface comes into play.

I am using Invertor Dynamic Simulation and I need to know the 2D contact position data to be displayed in the output grapher (i.e. the x,y,z coordinates). Only the forces are computed in the output grapher. I’ve tried using the “trace” feature but this will not allow me trace the 2D contact point. It would even benefit me to know the angle of the normal force relative to the absolute frame.

I'm looking for the best way to create a separate assembly out of various component parts in an existing assembly so that the whole thing can be placed in an assembly as you would a part, I know it's possible to demote components within an assembly but are there any other methods similar / better ?

We have an iLogic assembly with to parts in it. Maybe to cylindrical parts. The iLogic rules should do the following.
1. Start a Rule after open document.
2. This Rule starts a Rule in the first cylindrical component.
3. This Rule ask the user for a diameter.
4. The assembly gives this new parameter value to the second component
5. Then the assembly calls another rule in the second component to change it with the new parameter
Everything is working fine when the following combinations are taking place:
1. I open up the assembly out of vault or from a local drive or an accessible server drive
2. I insert the assembly as sub assembly in another assembly from a local drive or an accessible server drive
It don't work with the following situation:
- I insert the assembly as sub assembly in another assembly out of vault
Then the user becomes the dialog "Choose a diameter" twice.
I don't know why, but I have the idea it has something to do with the functionality of inventor to insert a component more than once. If you insert a component in an assembly Inventor gives you the opportunity to add more than one occurence after each other.
change that behaviour? Maybe a switch to change that inventor "add more than one occurence" behaviour.

I have encountered a problem with the Tube and Pipe styles.
As you can see, I have a rack assembly with a custom tube and pipe style. A wire as a tube in orange, and a tube support in white. Both have their seperate colorations at a style in the tube and pipe styles editor
When placing the rack assembly into the main assembly, it reverts to the coppor coloration I changed from the original style.
Steps I've taken:
Exported the styles .xml and Imported the styles into the master tubeandpipe.iam
Imported the user created .xml styles into the main assembly file nothing seems to work

I am trying to find the interior volume of an assembly (when am I not?!?!) by subtracting the assembly from a block that surrounds the most of it. Somewhere the assembly has a "leak" and I have been trying to use the Cross Section Analysis to track down where the inside lump is connected to the outside lump to be subtracted. Is there a less time consuming way to dynamically drag a plane across and get cross sectional views?
Even better is there a simple way to animate the analysis plane moving across the block so I can hopefully just watch and pause it when I find a leak?

it is possible to make a constraint that utilized a parameter of a part within the assembly.
For example, if I wanted to use the thickness of a plate, which I defined in the part, could I call that parameter in a constraint?

My assembly has grown (about 50 parts) to where I need to consolodate some parts into subassemblies for reuse and alternate iterations of the basic design.
When I import the original parts into a new assembly, all of the constrains I created are not there of course.
I've tried creating a new empty part and then deriving a new part from the assembly, but I can't add, delete or edit any parts.
I looked at using Shrinkwrap, Substitutes, iParts, Multi-body Parts, and Multiple Solids but I remain confused.
In retrospect, maybe I should have created the subassemblies between the part and assembly stage but I didn't.

I am trying to constrain motion for the following design:
-Object constrained to vertical motion (a counterweight).
-Object constrained to horizontal motion along a track (a slider).
A cable runs from the counterweight upward, makes a 180-degree turn around a pulley, runs back down, makes a 90-degree turn around another pulley, and connects to the slider.
When the weight moves down 10 cm, the slider needs to move laterally 10 cm.I don't care about modelling the cable, but I do need to have the slider move as the weight moves.
I will also need to model a case with a more complicated pulley, where when the weight moves down 10cm the slider moves laterally 5cm (again I don't care about the cable, just the relative motion).
Is there a way I can do this without creating a series of planes and cylinders and using rotation - translation constraints to link the motion of the weight to the slider?

Can an adaptive part (non involved in the drive constraint animation) bother the contact solver?
I have an assembly, with only one adaptive part, i have activate contact set for other 3 parts (not the adaptive part), activated contact solver and drive the constraints, but in the animation contact solver doesn't work at all.
So, i have tried to move manually the assembly (suppressing angular drive constraint) and the contact solver works fine.If i suppress the adaptive part the driving constraint and contact solver work perfect.
So i wonder... adaptive part can annoying the contact solver functionality?

I want to be able to control the location/position of a component in an assembly. This is easy enough through the iProperties/Occurrence tab and then adjust the location of the X,Y, and Z offsets. Is this possible using iLogic? I have been unable to find a function to access via iLogic. Ultimately I am trying to translate a component about an axis not a pattern.

I'm trying to run a simulation of 2 bevel gears without using the transitional/rotation constraint, but using the contact between the surfaces to simulate the rotation of the gears - basically I have an L-shaped shaft running through both centers and want to have the upper gear grounded, make the lateral gear rotate around its own axis - the goal is simply to see the contact between the gears make the side gear rotate around the vertical part of the l-shaped shaft, due to the contact forces.
