AutoCAD Inventor :: Simulation Of Bevel Gears Using Contact Rather Than Transitional Constraints
Jan 28, 2013
I'm trying to run a simulation of 2 bevel gears without using the transitional/rotation constraint, but using the contact between the surfaces to simulate the rotation of the gears - basically I have an L-shaped shaft running through both centers and want to have the upper gear grounded, make the lateral gear rotate around its own axis - the goal is simply to see the contact between the gears make the side gear rotate around the vertical part of the l-shaped shaft, due to the contact forces.

I am trying to draw a bevel gears from drawings, one is a scroll plate and the others are gears with a key hole. As you can see in the following attachment.
My question is how do you draw bevel gears on the face of the scroll plate and the cylindrical face of the other 3 gears?

Is it possible, using Design Accelerator to have Bevel Gears with straight teeth? I've tried every combo I can think of, and they are always curved teeth. Gears are not my most knowledgeable subject. I usually have the engineers produce the specs, & I get to draw them - they are not happy with the pictorial results.

I'm trying to draw a spiral bevel gears system KLINGELNBERG , but the results do not match the actual measurements of the piece.
ex. measure of the real outside diameter of the gear = 356mm
DATA :
number of teeth pinion = 9
number of teeth gear = 44
module = 5
shaft angle = 90 °
face width = 59mm
helix angle = 35 °
pressure angle = 20 °

I am using Invertor Dynamic Simulation and I need to know the 2D contact position data to be displayed in the output grapher (i.e. the x,y,z coordinates). Only the forces are computed in the output grapher. I’ve tried using the “trace” feature but this will not allow me trace the 2D contact point. It would even benefit me to know the angle of the normal force relative to the absolute frame.

I am trying to constrain motion for the following design:
-Object constrained to vertical motion (a counterweight).
-Object constrained to horizontal motion along a track (a slider).
A cable runs from the counterweight upward, makes a 180-degree turn around a pulley, runs back down, makes a 90-degree turn around another pulley, and connects to the slider.
When the weight moves down 10 cm, the slider needs to move laterally 10 cm.I don't care about modelling the cable, but I do need to have the slider move as the weight moves.
I will also need to model a case with a more complicated pulley, where when the weight moves down 10cm the slider moves laterally 5cm (again I don't care about the cable, just the relative motion).
Is there a way I can do this without creating a series of planes and cylinders and using rotation - translation constraints to link the motion of the weight to the slider?

Can an adaptive part (non involved in the drive constraint animation) bother the contact solver?
I have an assembly, with only one adaptive part, i have activate contact set for other 3 parts (not the adaptive part), activated contact solver and drive the constraints, but in the animation contact solver doesn't work at all.
So, i have tried to move manually the assembly (suppressing angular drive constraint) and the contact solver works fine.If i suppress the adaptive part the driving constraint and contact solver work perfect.
So i wonder... adaptive part can annoying the contact solver functionality?

I have a question regarding a transitional constraint between a pin and a surface within an adaptive assembly.
I would like the pin and the surface to be transitional only when the two parts "interfere" with each other.
At the moment with the example attached part A is remaining tangent to part B, restricting the necessary movement of part B to function properly in the mechanism.
In simplified terms I need part B to be able to break free of the "transitional constraint" of part A under certain movement conditions within the mechanism.

I have an assembly with a FEA simulation result. I can run a report and get the reaction forces and moments at each constraint. I would like to run a new simulation with different constraints and use the reaction results from the first simulation as loads in the second one.
Currently I do this by running a report on the 1st simulation to get a table of the reaction results. I then manually add those forces to the 2nd simulation. This takes time to type and the forces must be edited each time I re-run the 1st simulation.
Is there a way to use parameters to automate this?

I need to drive more than one constraint at a time. The assembly consist of a hydraulic ram that pulls a cable which is routed around a few pullys and then pulls another linear moving member. I don't really care about modeling the cable right now, I just want the cylinder piston and the final member to move in unison. I can only drive one constraint at a time, so I figured I could relate the two constraints together by setting them equal to a parameter (variable), but that isn't working. Is it me or is driving multiple constraints at a time something that would be very useful for a lot of applications?

I'm modeling cables running through a series of cable clamps. I'm working in an assembly with my structure as one part, clamps as seperate parts, and cables as separate parts. I modeled the clamps first and am using them to create my 3d spline to run the sweep. The clamps have moved several times and each time, the sweeps (cables) do not update to follow the new clamping path. I have tried multiple ways of solving this.
I've tried to redo the splines using "Include Geometry" and running the spline through the centers of the clamps. I've also deleted the constraints (which for some reason turn into fixed) and reapplied them as coincident constraints. However, once I setup these coincidences, they always change back to fixed.
In a last ditch method, I've created 2d sketches at EVERY clamping location (yes that's alot of sketches, time and effort) and projected the circular geometry to get a center point. This has seemed to work, but is so much work, there's no way we could use it regularly.

I have two sets of identical spur gears. I want them to be lined and connected big-small-big-small gear. But how to connect this two sets together. I can create motion and axes constrains but it still lacks teath meshing. I found some tutorial how to create differential drive, it works with downloaded gears but not with one that I create (it says to set imates to visible which does nothing and alt-move mesh imates toghether which also do not work). I work with 2009 and 2011 versions.

How can I create bicycle gears that have different numbers of teeth but all have an inter tooth distance (distance between the teeth centres) of 12.7mm?
My attempt at a solution and problems encountered:
I made a bicycle gear by patterning a small circle around a large circle then trimming lines (see attached sketch), but this method requires me to estimate the diameter of the large circle before patterning and then keep modifying this slightly until I get an intertooth distance as close as possible to 12.7mm. So I can't get exactly 12.7mm. In my sketch I have labelled this intertooth distance I refer to by construction lines.

I'm trying to design a gear system wherein a small gear rotating on an axle interacts with a large gear, held on an arm. The arm rotates about the same axis as the small gear, in the opposite direction. I applied the relevant motion constraint between the two gears. When I rotate the arm, the motion of the large gear rotates the small gear. However, if I just rotate the small gear, it freewheels, and the large gear doesn't move at all. This is a problem, because the machine depends on the independent rotation of both gear and arm-- the small gear has an input applied to it, but if I try to rotate it it has no effect on the large gear. I assume this is to do with the fact that the large gear's axis of rotation moves with the rotation of the arm.
I can't just throw it all into dynamic simulation, because I don't know yet what kind of torques will be rotating the arm and the small gear-- I know how they rotate relative to each other in terms of degrees, but that's all.
Essentially what I need to do is make it so that rotating the small gear turns the big gear, even when the arm is free to move (when it's grounded, the gears turn normally). I thought about using a contact set, but the gears (generated by Inventor) actually slightly intersect at the teeth, so that doesn't work.

I'm given this data to generate my worm gear set with:
Worm Gear Data:
Diametral Pitch: 8
Number of Teeth: 27
Pressure Angle: 20 Degrees
Pitch Diameter: 4.219
Base Circle Diameter: 4.523
Circular Pitch: .491
Circular Thickness: .246
Root Diameter: 3.906
Face Width: .783
Worm Data:
Number of Threads: 5
Pressure Angle: 20 Degrees
Pitch Diameter: .938
Lead Right Hand: .375
Lead Angle: 169 Degrees
Addendum: .156
Whole Depth: .313
Chordal Thickness: .204
Inner Diameter: .619
Outer Diameter: 1.244
Center Distance: 5
My problem is it keeps changing data and/or failing. It particularly hates the 27 teeth (always changes it), never shows a 5.4 gear ratio (probably because it hates the 27 teeth), and won't accept an addendum of less than 1. Is this feature limited to only certain set gear setups? the automated tool won't accept these values (which I have to work with)?

I have two gears. In the assembly I have them setup to mesh correctly. I can drive the constraint on the pinion and the gear will follow it (some what). I wanted a better video of it, so I went into Studio. Now when I drive the constaint like before on the pinion, the gear goes crazy.

There is a rotational translation constraint set between the pair (= to inverse of gear ratio) that works in the iam, but it is like Studion ignores it. How can I animate this to show the gear mesh?

I am creating a couple of spur gears using the "Center Distance" design guide. I have fixed each gear to a cylindrical face, but when I click on the "Calculate" button, there is an error saying that the center distance is incorrect.
I went back and edited my sketches so the center distance matched the one displayed in the design accelerator and attempted to calculate again, but the error persists. What am I not getting here?

I am having trouble getting my assembly to work in my corridor. I have a Basic Lane Transition subassembly with a Link Slope to Surface subassembly attached to it. The assembly follows my centerline alignment and the lane widens as designed out to my offset alignments. The slope grading to daylight works fine until the transitional lane starts to widen, then the slope assembly stays at the same point on the lane and does not stay linked to the end of the lane.
I am also having trouble getting the subassemblies to attach to the proper points. I keep trying different OSnaps unitl one seems to work, but I am never sure the subassemblies are connected properly.

I am modelling a steep channel of constant slope operating under super critical flow conditions between two small weirs. I have set up two different models to represent this:
1. A single link between the upstream and downstream weirs.
2. I have also modeled the channel as a number of smaller links with the same slope separated by nodes spaced arbitrarily along the channel length.
The two models give very different results. The former results in an unstable channel (oscillates between sub- and super critical flow) and a maximum velocity in the channel of around 1.5m/s. It seems to me that the velocity in the upper section of the channel should be higher. I assume this has something to do with the manner in which SSA averages the velocities along the entire channel link.
The second model gives more realistic velocities in the upper channel links (around 3.6m/s) and a hydraulic jump and transition to sub critical flow upstream of the weir in the lower channel. This seems more realistic. I think the trick here is to make sure that the downstream link is long enough to enable realistic formation of the hydraulic jump in the model.

I've created a successful FEA simulation in Inventor 2014 and obtained results. But I want to see the highest stress in a defined area that is smaller than the entire part (I have some stress concentrations that are throwing off my 'max'). Is there a way to probe an area instead of just a point? I'm tired of creating a dozen probes to find the 'local max'.

I'm developing a program which runs several simulations and obtains the results automatically.
I'm using the dynamic simulation API created in Inventor 2013. For that I use the GetResultValues(ByRef values() as Double) method of the class DSResult.
I used the method inside the VBA of inventor and worked well. But when I wrote the program in Visual Basic Express 2010, the method doesn't return anything.
I share an excerpt of the
Dim odoc As AssemblyDocument
odoc=invApp.Documents.Open(testPath, True)
Dim dsman As Inventor.SimulationManager = odoc.ComponentDefinition.SimulationManager
Dim dssim As Inventor.DynamicSimulation = dsman.DynamicSimulations.Item(1)
Dim oJoints As Inventor.DSJoints = dssim.DSJoints
oJoint = oJoints.Item(1)
[code]....
The method GetResultValues(values) should modify 'values' to a time, value vector.
It works well inside Inventor, but doesn't in the program in VB, although it runs the simulations and does everything else right.
