AutoCAD Inventor :: Self Intersecting Surfaces Helix Profile Sweep
Oct 8, 2012
I am working on Sweeping three helix profiles around a cylinder to create a screw thread. When I sweep the profile, Inventor gives me the error messages:
"The attempted operation would create a self-intersecting surfaces. Try with different inputs".
or
"The attempted operation did not produce meaningful intersection edges from the face-face intersection. Try with different inputs".
However, this is exactly what I need to create the helix profile I require and eventually increase the size of the Extrusion Sweep profile to 80mm. When I increase the sweep profile to 80mm I get the same error message about the self intersecting surfaces.
I am working with Autodesk Inventor Professional 2011, 64bit, 8gb RAM, Windows 7, Intel Core i7-2860QM.

is there a command or workflow to split all intersecting surfaces? currently we build surface models and split manually or open in autocad, explode, overkill, breakall, then export the lines for rebuilding in an FE package.
Ideally we would like to export straight from inventor with one hit i would like to do the 5 splits below the EOP marker automatically

I have generated a gear set using inventor. Now I would like to 3d print the gears. I have uesd the export tooth shape to get the true tooth profile. now I am attempting to use the coil feature to generate the helical tooth. The problem im running into is in the coil tool I can only give it a Revolution and height dimension. The hight is the width of the gear, but I am having a problem converting the helix angle to the "Revolution" perameter. I have read other posts and they say that it is Helix angle / 360. I have tried that and then compared it to the original gear generated by inventor and it is not even close. I need to do this on in internal gear and match it to an external gear.

I am having difficulty aligning the profile for a sweep feature. I need the profile to be normal to the path, but aligned vertically. In other words, the rectangular profile should remain "plumb" along the entire sweep. Is there a simple way to do this?
I have shared the sample files, trying to use the profile in two different ways, through Dropbox (they are too large to upload). I am using Inventor 2013.

I am trying to sweep a profile throughout the helical sweep path which is a series of 3d sketches. The sweet prifile sweeps correctly to the first 3d sketch profile but whin I select the second line the preview is gone and Inventor gives me an error saying the sweep cannot be done. how I can have the sweep done throughout the helical structure.Attached is the ipt file.

Using Conceptual View, I have hanger plates that intersect an arch, and previously where they intersect you couldn't see inside the arch just the surface. Since saving as another drawing to add hangers details something has changed in the display and the arch appears transparent at the moment so you cant see where along the plates the arch intersects.
Unless you zoom right into the intersection, the surfaces appear and zoom out and it goes transparent again.

My purpose for Inventor (2012) is for cabinetry, more specifically the majority is for kitchen cabinetry.
All of our kitchens have crown, but not the same crown profile every time. There will be dozens of profiles if not reaching 100 or more.
What I am trying to accomplish is a way to model a sweep (which I can do no problem) but I would like to have the option of changing the sweep profile on the fly. I would be sitting with a customer and they would say "yes or no" to what they like.
I have looked at derived parts and iFeature and unless I am missing it, it's not giving me what I would like. Is this where iLogic comes in? How to use that, which I know I will have to eventually.
Right now I have an .ipt file with 7 crown profiles. Not sure I want to go any further for fear of re-work.

I am trying to perform a sweep of a profile and I am unable to select the profile. I have a part with a plane through the part. I created a profile on this plane that I want to sweep along my path. However whenever I try to select the profile I am unable to, even when I sectioned the part to the created plane.

Is there a way for the program to automatically change profile elevations of intersecting roads.
Say for example i have two intersecting roads ROAD A and ROAD B.
On my ROAD A profile at station 0+300 i have a proposed road elevation of 9.5
On my ROAD B profile at station 0+000 (intersecting point) I have the same proposed road elevation of 9.5.
Now i change my ROAD A profile at station 0+300 to 10.3
Is there anyway to allow the program to automatically change my ROAD B profile elevations to 10.3
IF NOT--
and I have to use the Annotate > Add Labels > Profile View > .......................... labels,
Is there a way for those labels to link across the profiles such that , On my ROAD A profile at station 0+300 i put the label at the elevation of 9.5
On my ROAD B profile at station 0+000 (intersecting point) I have the same label at the elevation of 9.5
Now i change my ROAD A profile at station 0+300 to elevation of 10.3 then is there a way for it to automatically raise the ROAD B elevation label
So that I would know, without having to manually check through, that there is a discrepancy between those intersecting roads. So the real list of my query is whether I can link my alignments, profiles or annotation labels.

Run profile on a self-intersecting street? The one I'm dealing with is a dead end 'P' shape. Logically, there are manholes in the intersection of the 'P', and logically to me, these structures need to show up in two places in the same profile view. Of course, C3D doesn't realize that I want a certain structure to show up twice, and I'm not sure how to communicate that information to it.

The attached file shows a gear tooth profile that I need to sweep along the lines shown. The problem is those lines are not all parallel to the UCS The tooth profile is a region.
Is there a workaround to make this happen? I used to do this all the time in 2008.
I couldn't attach the file 'cause it wss too big so I saved it as a PDF but now I can't attach that because it is not a DWG
How do I attach a PDF?

While working in the conceptual mass environment, I have inserted a closed profile (1 polyline) from a dwg file.
What I need is to either extrude or sweep this profile as a surface, but obviously Create Form only gives me the solid option.
How do I go about doing this?

I am working on a project that involves a screw conveyer(auger) with a 3" od, 1.5"/flight and a 0.800" ctr shaft. I modeled it without any difficulty using the "helix" function in a 3-d sketch & then swept a rectal around that path. The problem is, I need paper templates to layout the pattern on the steel. In the past I have made use of the "flat pattern" feature to print paper templates for tube notching and such, but that function prompts me with an error message "no surface to flatten" Attached is the full screw(augShaft9in.ipt), a single flight and 2/3 of a flight(i dont think a full flight will flatten & not overlap). Need to getting these patterns printed.

I'm trying to create a Tiled Skirt (150x150mm) profile or pattern to be used as Wall Sweep. Is there anyway to create this profile as the Family Template: metric profile (wall hosted) only allow me to create a 2D profile.
I would prefer to avoid detail lines or Filled region to get the tiles shown as I need to schedule and quantify this element.

I have 2 different surfaces (Existing Ground & Proposed Pipe Invert) that I want to have the elevations shown for in a profile data band, but I want them to show at the design profile's PVIs (Proposed Road). Is it possible to set up a data band style that samples at one profile's geometry points but displays the elevations from these points from a different profile? My workaround is to set the data bands to all sample from the design profile first and label over the design profile's data band but I'm hoping for a cleaner solution. Attached is an image showing the profile view in question.

I am attempting to model an internal 1/8"-27 NPT thread, both the through hole and the tapered part of the hole are modeled, but after I draw the helix and the polygon and orient the polygon to the helix correctly, (or even if I don't, I have tried it) it keeps saying unable to sweep object. I am using Sweep with Alignment with the No option. If I select the polygon first, then click sweep, it works, but rotates the polygon so that what I get ends up looking nothing like a thread profile.
I have tried reducing the polygon radius down to a ridiculously small value, thinking it might have been interference due to a possible trig miscalculation, but with no success, still have the same issue. FYI, I am using a .037" turn height for 27 TPI and a polygon radius of .0214", with a helix small end radius of .177" and large end radius of .189".

You can create a variable pitch helix by using the Equation Curve feature introduced in Inventor 2013.
Create a new 3D Sketch. Start the Equation Curve command.
Here are equations that I use to create helical curves. Many other variations exist.
Cartesian coordinates:
x(t) = radius * sin(360 * num_turns * t)
y(t) = radius * cos(360 * num_turns * t)
z(t) = height * t
[Code]....
When you sweep a profile along a helical path, use the plane normal sweep (instead of perpendicular sweep) to orient profiles suitable for coil or spring. In the example below, the sweep path is a constant radius, variable pitch helix.

I have a rectangular chute, tapering in width and height, and intersecting, at an angle, with a round duct. I can't seem to find a way to determine the cut-out in the round duct.
Because the chute tapers projecting the size onto a flat plane to then project onto the round duct doesn't work.
