AutoCAD Inventor :: Repositioning Part On Ground Plane
Oct 4, 2012
I have created a part in Inventor that is not on the ground plane, is there an easy way to quickly re-position this on the ground plane ?

why can't i sketch on the ground plane? If i turn on the ground plae I assume it is a plane like any other but I can't sketch on it nor can i attach nother plane to it?

Whenever I open a part (or iam), the ground plane and ambient shadows are active. If I turn them off (on View tab, appearance panel) and exit the part, then reopen it again, the ground plane and ambient shadows are active again.
How do I save these appearance settings? Do I have to turn these off EVERYTIME I open a part?
I didnt see anything in the app options for this.

I'm doing drawings of a construction site. Traditionally, in AutoCAD drawings, we show a solid line to represent the ground plane in elevation views. I'd like to do the same thing in my Inventor drawings.
I can "include" the XZ Plane in the view, which shows the line I'm wanting, but it shows as a phantom line.
Right-clicking either the line in the drawing or the plane in the browser only gives me the option to "Edit Center Mark Style..."
If I go to the Style Editor, Object Defaults, Work Plane, the object style is Center Mark (ANSI). If I click on that, the drop-down only gives me that one choice.

I am trying to use AutoCAD to render some small parts. I am used to using Inventor Studio, but AutoCad's rendering tools have taken some getting used. to. I have everything figured out, with the exception of the ground plane for shadows and/or reflections.
I originally wanted a ground plane for a shadow to be projected on. However, I had no luck with that, so I modeled a large box under the part. Using that, I am able to get a shadow, or reflection, BUT, the edges of the box are showing in the background. The easy fix is to make the box larger, however, I need the reflective surface and background to be white so that it can be printed on paper without seeing the rendered edges.
How can I set a ground plane, or model a plane, for shadows or reflections, AND made it true white so that the edges cannot be seen?

I have several elements that I need to align flat to the ground plane, but due to how i have created them, I am finding it very difficult. They are panels for a geodesic type structure and i want to lay them flat to 3d print them. I have tried adjusting pivot, aligning to object, etc but I cannot get the sections to be completey flat
For some reason Area will not let me post .max file so it's a dxf instead

Possible to have more than 1 derived part in a part.
And is it possible to select on which plane and location the derived part is to be?
I have a part with a derived part but now I want to add another part to it. is this possible?

Is there any way to dimension my features, whether it's a sketch or using the hole feature, to either the middle of my part or to a middle plane I have?
I am wanting a group of tapped holes to be the same from the middle of my part, regardless of what the overall size of the part is. How can I dimension like this?

I was pretty much expecting to see a Ground Plane object in the scene explorer, but no such beast exists. My spirits were briefly lifted by finding a Ground Plane section in the Environments palette, but that does not allow you to attach texture maps to the ground plane, only a solid color.
If such a thing doesn't exist (for shame, Adobe), any quickest way to create a textured, infinite ground plane (imagine, for example, a tiled floor or a wooden floor that extends all the way off into the horizon)?

In Revit 2012, how do I place a wall at an angle to the ground plane, so it can be connected to a roof above? I have tried placing a wall on level and rotating it, however it does not appear to work. I can rotate other elements, but not walls.

Working on setting up 2013 for our department. By default we use the application option - Part Tab - of creating a sketch on the x-z plane upon new part creation. Now this actually works, problem is you can't draw on it, or you can't see what you are drawing. If you exit out of the sketch and start a new one then it works. I have found that if you switch the setting to the y-z plane is does the same thing. Switching it to no new sketch or the x-y plane and it works fine. Tying to determine if it's actually a bug in inventor or if it's just something with what I am doing or our template files.

there is a command or simple procedure to actively view a section plane in an assembly or part. I know there are the static methods of using slice graphics and section view however I'm looking to create a live section where I am able to constantly move the plane through the model thus altering the live section as it appears on screen, similar to the way a model can be viewed in Tekla with the cut section command.

I'm trying to reposition dimensions in a drawing through the API. The output of my code seems to indicate the method is working, but after it runs the drawing is unchanged. Here's the code (in VBA):
Dim oDoc As DrawingDocument
Set oDoc = ThisApplication.ActiveDocument
Dim oSheet As Sheet
Set oSheet = oDoc.Sheets.Item(1)
Dim oLdim As LinearGeneralDimension
Dim oLeaderNote As LeaderNote
Dim oDimLine As LineSegment2d ' Dimension Line
Dim oStartPt As Point2d ' Dimension Line Start Point
Dim oEndPt As Point2d ' Dimension Line End Point
[code]....
Looks like it moved my vertical dimension left, but it doesn't actually do anything. Is this not a viable method for repositioning a dimension?

I'd like to have a menu option next to "Grounded" which is "Grounded to origin", to save setting three flush constraints every time I pull a part into an assembly and want it to have the same origin as the assembly. This is something I do quite a lot using the multibody part > derived part > assembly workflow. Apart from saving time it would save cluttering up the model browser. In the meantime is there a scripting method of doing this with one click? IV2013

I seem to have made what many might consider a rookie mistake. Built a fairly complex structure for an overhead crane system and get to the end to find that I missed two holes. The problem with these two holes is it is ONLY 1 plate (my grounded part), but I have used this same part in one other instance. So if I edit (even from within assembly) and add the two holes to the grounded plate it creates them in the other plate, which I dont want.
Since I have the second plate being used as a refence to locate MANY other parts on this unit, it would be quite difficult to replace it with a new part (same but different file name).
Any way to add said two holes to the grounded plate only and not the other?

I'm trying to have some advanced positioning - I don't know if this can be done using dynamic blocks. Start with some basic geometry - let's say a triangle - /. Now, I can add a rotate parameter & action that will let me spin that as I wish.
Next - add a couple attributes. I have a pair of attributes, separated by a text, aligned as "A1.A2" A1 is right-justified, and A2 is left-justified, so when edited they remain in the form "A1.A2" regardless of length. I can now add a point parameter, combined with a move action, that will let me reposition these three entities freely.
My question - can I have the rotate action trigger a move, such that the text repositions to a defined location without changing orientation (DON'T rotate the text!)?
So if I start with (leading . used for positioning in this forum text box):. A1.A2
I want to rotate it to: A1.A2
While I'd love to have it totally self-adjust, I mainly need it to handle 45-degree increments of rotation. Is there a way of expressing this using dynamic blocks using action and/or constraints? Or would this require a lisp construct?

When I add an image to my sketch the main body then appears "of the ground" as you van see from the attached screen shot. The shadow and reflection is distant. The minute I remove the instead image the object and the shadow touch again as it should be.

I set up our company log which gets embossed on most parts as a sketch block in an .ipt. The .ipt contains nothing but the sketch block. To use it, the designer only needs to derive the Logo.ipt file into their part and then use the scale setting to set the derived block to the desired size for that part. The result is a scalable set of line geometry that can easily be used for extrusion or emboss that is standard for all users. It works beautifully, that is until you try to use it in a sheet metal part in 2012.
For some reason, when this same part, which works perfectly in normal parts, is derived into a sheet metal part an error pops up stating that, "Selected part does not have any geometry that can be derived." Say what?
I was able to find a workaround by directly copying the block into the sheet metal part, but you no longer have the ability to go back and scale it if needed. Even more strange, when the block was copied over, it could not be deleted from the new part.
Is this just a bug with 2012? Why does it work in a normal part but not sheet metal?

I would like to simplify this assembly into one seamless part for FEM calculation:The assembly consists out of parts that, in reality, will be welded together. Due to their form, there is no way to place them exactly onto each other, therefore there are slight gaps between the parts:
Now when I try to merge the assembly into one part via "simplify" --> "create simplified part" and choose "single solid body with seams between planar faces merged", Inventor does not fill these gaps (even though it displays only one part in the bottom right corner of my window). Unfortunately, the remaining gaps brings "contact" problems in the FEM simulation.
how to close the gaps and really merge the assembly into one part?

I have a part that has protrusions. When i mate that part up to another part that second part needs to have cutouts/holes to receive those protrusions.
i mainly use it in sheetmetal parts. and use the rectangular protrusions on de contour to mate up with corresponding cutouts in the other sheet. this works with positioning and also makes for a nice weld spot/area.
But also for making holes to accommodate a mold pin used in custom punch dies. I want the intervening part to receive a corresponding (propperly tolleranced) hole automatically. Much like a bolted connection does.
same for parts like circlips. i want them to automatically generate the seat in the part it's mated to. Rather than using the axle generator.
Ofcourse one can place the parts and do an in assembly interpart projection and go from there, but i want the part to generate the (predifined) modification to the other part. It would save time and also reduces problems as the parts are moved about or even removed.
