AutoCAD Inventor :: Procedure To Actively View Section Plane In Assembly Or Part
Oct 6, 2011
there is a command or simple procedure to actively view a section plane in an assembly or part. I know there are the static methods of using slice graphics and section view however I'm looking to create a live section where I am able to constantly move the plane through the model thus altering the live section as it appears on screen, similar to the way a model can be viewed in Tekla with the cut section command.

If you edit a section view sketch you can project model edges in the sketch and use them to constrain the section view line. However I cannot seem to project an included workplane to the sketch. For a particular application I really need to use a workplane because the model is actually a dummy that gets replaced by a vb macro. So any projected model edges will loose their reference.
I found out that I could use a sketch in the model to create the section view. In a model sketch it is possible to project work planes, so this looks like a good solution. However I do prefer the flexibility that you have when you use a drawing sketch.
How to use a work plane to constrain a section view, other then the model sketch method explained above.

I have an assembly were i want to exclude some parts in a sectional drawing view. I mean i want those parts should be visible in section view but should not get sectioned. And the remaining parts will be in a sectioned view. Is that posible or i may be missing something.

In inventor 2013 professional I have a problem using the section view in my assemblies files. When I active the section view it works well, as soon as I open a command (for example the measure of a distance) the section view disappear and the assembly appear in entire view.I didn't modified any configuration on my software.

Just got updated from IV 2012 to 2013 with a new Dell (yawn) workstation to boot. OK, I did a section view of a pretty complex assembly and when I tried to take a measurement, the section view just dissapeared and it went back to full view. One of the primary uses of using section views is to view / inspect / measure, that which cannot be seen in the normal full view.
Why did this break in 2013 ? and is there a patch to fix it ?

I have a cylindrical shaft passing through a bearing. I have a section view showing a cut-away of half of the shaft and bearing. Automated hatching results. I bring the bearing out of the section view (Rclick > Section Participation > None), and the hatching of the shaft remains visible, through the bearing. An image of this is shown below:
I would like to hide that hatching that shows through the bearing, so that it looks like the image below:
How can this be done?

Is there a quick way to detail parts from an assembly without having to browse to a part and then search through and select a part and insert a Base View?
For instance from within SolidWorks you can insert a view of an assembly and if you need to detail any part within that assembly you can simply click/select on the part in an assembly view and right click insert view then your View Menu pops up and you are moving forward. If you have to detail several parts you can spit out their Base Views in a matter of seconds. Even if you are making a seperate sheet just for the parts it is easier to insert an assembly view off the sheet and select the parts from there insert all of your part views then delete the assembly view if you want. You can also go to the properties of each view and link the balloons to your assembly BOM.
It is very useful if you are generating drawings such as I do with most parts for the assembly being detailed on the same sheets.
So is there a quick way to get the parts detailed?

I have received a great solution from Bobvdd allowing ilogic control of the view rep in a part file (not an assembly file). The code below works brilliantly when the part file is the active document. However when the part is placed in an assembly and the ilogic is run with the assembly active, the code produces no result. How to modify the top 6 lines of code?
Dim oApp As Inventor.Application
oApp = ThisApplication
Dim oDoc As Document
[Code]....

I'm a playground designer and we're currently in the process of updating our systems to Inventor. Over the next few years I'm going to be working on many different assemblies all using the same parts and sub assemblies, many of which need to share the same ground plane.
I'm wondering if there is any easy/quick way to make certain parts (not all) automatically constrain/flush to the ground/XZ plane when I place them?

On one part, I have a bore hole drilled on a curved surface so the hole is actually an ellipse.
Now the other part I am trying to constrain together is the pipe that will be welded into the bore hole; so that is a simple circular pipe.
The issue is that the pipe has to be inserted 0.25" above the interior of the bore hole to allow for room for the weld. In order to do this I have tried to create a plane attached to the 3D ellipse and then constrain the pipe to be 0.25" above that plane. The problem is I cannot seem to create a plane attached to the 3D geometry; I cant even find a way to attach points, or pick the center point of the bore hole.
How to create a plane on 3D geometry and link it to said geometry. I'm using 2012, if that is necessary information.

I would like to simplify this assembly into one seamless part for FEM calculation:The assembly consists out of parts that, in reality, will be welded together. Due to their form, there is no way to place them exactly onto each other, therefore there are slight gaps between the parts:
Now when I try to merge the assembly into one part via "simplify" --> "create simplified part" and choose "single solid body with seams between planar faces merged", Inventor does not fill these gaps (even though it displays only one part in the bottom right corner of my window). Unfortunately, the remaining gaps brings "contact" problems in the FEM simulation.
how to close the gaps and really merge the assembly into one part?

I have a part that has protrusions. When i mate that part up to another part that second part needs to have cutouts/holes to receive those protrusions.
i mainly use it in sheetmetal parts. and use the rectangular protrusions on de contour to mate up with corresponding cutouts in the other sheet. this works with positioning and also makes for a nice weld spot/area.
But also for making holes to accommodate a mold pin used in custom punch dies. I want the intervening part to receive a corresponding (propperly tolleranced) hole automatically. Much like a bolted connection does.
same for parts like circlips. i want them to automatically generate the seat in the part it's mated to. Rather than using the axle generator.
Ofcourse one can place the parts and do an in assembly interpart projection and go from there, but i want the part to generate the (predifined) modification to the other part. It would save time and also reduces problems as the parts are moved about or even removed.
