AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Pipe Libraries

Dec 11, 2013

I'm in the deployment testing phase of rolling out Civil 3D 2013.  We're currently using Civil 3D 2011.  We've done a moderate amount of customizing to 2011 to make it work for us - mainly in styles, but we did add a special pipe library because we still run into jobs that use clay pipe and other "non-standard"/"non-modern" items.

The problem is that we don't want to have redo the work to use our custom pipe libraries.  At the same time, we want to use anything that Civil 3D 2013 starts us with in the "Imperial" configuration because we've not completed our customizations and there are new things that our default starting drawing doesn't know about (pressure pipes and railways come to mind).

So I'm wondering what the best method of merging the two libraries is.  Can I simply look for files that are only in our 2011 pipe library folders and copy those forward?

It may stop us from creating pipes and parts in the future, because I for one do not relish the idea of recrating things everytime an upgrade happens.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Depicting Both Slice And Cross Cut Pipe Profiles Of One Pipe

Jan 8, 2014

One of the things I seem to struggle with is being able to depict a single pipe when it needs to be shown in one profile as a crossing pipe, and another profile where you you show a lenghwise slice through the pipe.  I end up tracing the pipe with eliptical objects where I'm cutting across the pipe and setting up more for the lengthwise/sideview of the pipe.  Is there a way to have two different styles for the same pipe, one for a cross cut and one for a lengthwise slice?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Grading Groups

Oct 3, 2013

I'm currently trying to model all siteworks for a project using Civil 3D 2014. I created several grading groups that represent the various pads I need for the general project layout.  Since this was the way I knew how to model the pads, now I have some intersections on the slopes between one grading group and the other. I was wondering if I could "merge" the grading groups in order for them to be just one big pad, that maintains all the levels from the other pads. Here is an image of what I am trying to explain:

What I want to do is to merge the regions circled in red, so that I have only one building pad on my terrain.

What are the best ways to handle these? I am having a hard time with the surfaces overlapping. I have tried using targets, but they don't work well.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Surfaces Connecting Grading

Apr 25, 2013

As you can see in my attachment, I have a emergency spillway coming out of a dugout wetland.  The fill area, the pool area, and the emergency spillway channel are all separate surfaces.  All three of these surfaces are created from gradings.  The fill was a feature line drawn around the top witdth of the dam, and then graded down to the Existing Ground.  The channel is another polygon feature line with elevations at each PI and then graded up to the EG.  The pool was a feature line I drew around the perimeter of my pool, laid on the surface EG, and then graded down to an elevation on a slope.

I'd really like to blend all the surfaces together.  Right now, they are all separated with tiny slivers of Existing Ground.

How do I go about this?  As you can see, I'm still pretty green with gradings.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Corridor Surfaces That Run Parallel To Each Other

Dec 11, 2012

How do I merge 2 corridor surfaces that are running parallel to each other. Due to this being an overlay project the CL will stay the same just raised 4.5" from existing CL and the existing cross slope varies which we are matching until you hit the sawcut. We are not ripping out or milling any apshalt, it is strictly an overlay of the exisitng with 4.5" of new asphalt. We are saw cutting 2' either side of theedge of paveement and matching in with proposed.

 I have created a feature line over the existing cl then raised it the required height. the cl has been offset 10 both sides to create my left and right shoulder alignments,  I then created a left and right shoulder corridor assembly which has supplied 2 seperate surfaces. I now would like to merge the 2 surfaces using the raised cl feature line as a break line to create the final proposed surface. I would prefer not to have to create feature lines from my corridor and create a new surface because i would like to take asphalt and subgrade quantaties at the end with out having to hand calc but will if need be.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Duplicated Files But With Unique Grading And Surfaces

Jun 8, 2012

I started with a points file which I created an existing surface called EG. I then used a number of feature line to create the gradings, grading surfaces and associated volume surfaces (compared to EG) also had other drawing elements and aerial photo in place. I had a lot of grading scenarios to do and it was all in one file. It was getting out of hand, so I duplicated the file, deleted the gradings (retained the EG surface) then added another set of new gradings and volume surfaces against EG. I did this in 4 files. So now I have multiple files that contain duplicates of the same EG surface and other features, but have unique gradings and surfaces referenced to those individual EGs.

Files all have similar structure:

+Various features (duplicated in all files)

  - base aerial photo

  - other drawing elements

+Surfaces

  - EG surface (duplicated in all files)

  - Grading A-1 surface

  - Grading A-2 surface

  - Grading A-1 volume surface

  - Grading A-2 volume surface

+Site A

  - Grading A-1

  - Grading A-2

I recognise now that I should have data shared the EG surface from 1 file (and xrefed the other common drawing elements??) but given my situation now, what is the recommend way of putting it all together?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Pipe Rules Not Followed Exactly?

Nov 1, 2013

I created a pipe rule and applied it to my 6" HDPE pipe in my parts list.  The rule is followed close but not exact.  Here it is:

I created a "cover only" rule for my 6" HDPE pipe.  I have the maximum and minimum cover set to 3.50'.  I have it the same so it will draw my pipe 3.50' deep.  I don't want it to vary.  It for drawing in existing underground power so when we cut profiles and sections the existing power shows up.  We want it to show up 3.50' deep.  I created a label style for my pipe that tells me start cover and end cover of the pipe so I can see it right there on the screen.  The numbers range from 3.50' deep to 4.70' deep.

Why does the pipe not get drawn in exactly 3.50' deep?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Structure Insertion To Pipe

Jul 31, 2012

I have this block called gate valve. The base point is at the middle of the block. When I use this block as a style and insert it in profile it always places itself down low on the pipe. As you can see the grip is way above the top of the block and I have to move it into place anytime I use one. If I change the pipe inverts the gate valve block style lowers itself once again and I have to move it up into place. I have changed the base of the block but it makes no difference.

This is how the structure look in the object viewer. Notice the one on the right is the block that needs to be raised, however in the viewer it shows placed correctly.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Changing Pipe Material

Dec 11, 2012

Version Civil 3D 2013....

A pipe network has been created & labeled.  All pipes labeled correctly except one.  The material for 15", 18", 24" RCP pipes labeled "RCP" but all the 12" pipes labeled "Reinforced Concrete Pipe".  So I know I need to change the Material of the 12" pipe to read "RCP".  I was hoping to just go to Pipe Properties & change it there for this dwg but it doesn't change.

I was thinking it might be in the part xml file but why would some label "RCP" and the 12" didn't? The Parts Catolog used in this dwg is the default from Autodesk.  Also, in the Part List, Material is greyed out.  That's the first place I went to change the Material.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Pressure Pipe Content

May 31, 2013

I'm in the process of creating content for "pressure Pipe networks". I have created a number of pipes (HDPE, PVC and steel, sizes ranging from 20mm to 200mm). I have also created a number of Tees (Equal and reducing).

My question is.

If you draw in pressure pipe say 90mm ø and the insert a fitting say a 90x75x90 reducing Tee into the line. Then you wish to extend the pipe from the 75mm ø branch, it does not pick up it should be a 75mm pipe but defaults back to the setting (90mm) that you drew the original pipe line in, you have to change the default pipe type to 75 before extending the 75mm pipe from the Tee.

Below I have included a couple of screen shots.

I can bring in a data reference and label those, but can not see pipe or structure outlines or anything to that end. I have tried to recover, audit, purge. I am at the end, currently creating the pipe network, data referencing it in, and then just drawing lines between the labels.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Pipe Length / Stationing

Apr 18, 2013

When labeling pipes, the lengths and stations do not always match. this appears to be related to a rounding issue. for example, the first pipe may start at 0+00 and have a length of 50.69167397’. The reported station in the structure label (using “normal rounding”) is naturally 0+50.69, as anticipated. The upstream pipe has a length of 43.36435901’, resulting in a total length from 0+00 of 94.05603298, resulting in a station of 0+94.06. However, the rounded values of the lengths (c’mon, nobody reports lengths to the 100-millionth) labeled on the pipes (50.69’ and 43.36’) total an expected station of 0+94.05.

I have tried all manners of “rounding” in the label styles, but it always falls down in one situation or another. I have also tried setting in the network and pipe “Feature Settings” for distance to a locked accuracy of 2 decimal places, but that does nto seem to do it either.

So, the question is, is there a way to resolve this issue without having to move one of the structures 0.001’ to resolve the mathematical parallax?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Intersect With And Curved Pipe

Nov 18, 2011

I'm using the Intersect With method with two pipes. The Intersect With method doesn't appear to work with curved pipes if the pipes do not cross. If they don't cross the method works, but if they don't then it doesn't find the intersect points properly. This appears to be an issue with Civil 3D 2010 to 2012 API.

[URL]........

In the screen cast image the pipe on the right finds the intersection point with the straight pipe on the left, but not the curved pipe that is in the middle. I've had poor results trying to put in support requests for API related issues.

For Civil 3D 2010 here's the code that isn't working:

oPoints = new Point3dCollection();
Pipe oLateral = (Pipe)lateralObjId.GetObject(OpenMode.ForRead);
Pipe oMain = (Pipe)mainObjId.GetObject(OpenMode.ForRead);

oLateral.IntersectWith(oMain, Intersect.ExtendThis, oPoints, 0, 0);
