AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Intersect With And Curved Pipe
Nov 18, 2011
I'm using the Intersect With method with two pipes. The Intersect With method doesn't appear to work with curved pipes if the pipes do not cross. If they don't cross the method works, but if they don't then it doesn't find the intersect points properly. This appears to be an issue with Civil 3D 2010 to 2012 API.

In the screen cast image the pipe on the right finds the intersection point with the straight pipe on the left, but not the curved pipe that is in the middle. I've had poor results trying to put in support requests for API related issues.
For Civil 3D 2010 here's the code that isn't working:
I'm trying to set up pipe styles that have a linetype with text in them. For example ------SFM------. They work fine for straight pipes. However on a curved pipe the text goes all funky. Not only is the text backwards it is also mirrored.
Is there likely something wrong with my linetype definitions or is that normal behavior with civil 3d pipes?
I created a pressure pipe network with curved pipes. After I created the profile and told the pipe to follow the surface, all of my curved pipes had turned into straight segments. I wasn't able to convert them back to curved.
How to create a flow arrow label for a feature line that parallels the curve?
I've a vague notion that this could be done with a dynamic block and a few fancy expressions. I'm comfortable with expressions, but I've never used dynamic blocks at all, so I wouldn't know where to start.
To be clear, I know curved text is possible, but I'm looking for a curved line (ie an arc) that would look 'parallel' to the arc of the feature line (ie have the same centre point). This would have to be dynamic to allow for different radii and for flipping to the left and right side of the feature line.
I would like to know how to draw this pipe as shown in this picture below. Draw a 3d pipe with horizontal curve and vertical curve elements combined. Here are the design elements
for the horizontal curve for the vertical curve radius=30.798m radius=18.000m angle=29deg angle=60deg
The diameter of pipe that i am trying to draw is 5 meters.
I've created a 3d sketch with the run of the tube on it but when I click "Derived Route" although the full 3d sketch is highlighted bugger all happens. There's nothing in the "Included Geometry" folder.
Is it because of the material? I've set it to a "Tube With Bends" and set my default radius.
I am trying to constrin a washer to a curved pipe. How do I create an axis along the curved pipe so the washer can constrain and move along the cruved axis?
I know I should know this, but can't seem to get it to work.
I have two ~parallel feature lines about 250' apart. I grade the Easterly Ft Line going west at a +1.5%, and I grade the Westerly Ft Line going east at a -2.00:1 slope.
I know C3D doesnt have a tool to intersect them, I must use the intermediate surface approach.
What I did was grade one, create 'Paste Surface 1' then grade the other, create 'Paste Surface 2' and then I created Surface 3 and pasted 'Paste Surface 1' and 'Paste Surface 2' into Surface 3.
Throughout I used 'Grade to Distance'
Surface 3 doesn't come out correctly.

I'm a bit perpplexed about a very simple grading scenario: intersect the daylighting of two gradings as shown in the screen capture. I would like a solution that is dynamic to changes in either of the 2 gradings.
The intended result is in the 3D PDF.

Pipe network storm pipes: Fairly new to Civil3D and trying to set up parts list for the storm sewer pipe and would like the plan view to appear as it does currently. We use a polyline for centerline of pipe, similar to dashed linetype but line and space are the same, width set to pipe width.
I created pipe network for my storm drain project. I have located all the structures (manhole) to all angle point of my alignment as required. Also I "insert" manhole every 400' per local code requirements using the command "network layout tools; structures only. My problem is I couldn't find the tools how to trim the pipe that pass through the manhole. Please see attached pdf file.
One of the things I seem to struggle with is being able to depict a single pipe when it needs to be shown in one profile as a crossing pipe, and another profile where you you show a lenghwise slice through the pipe. I end up tracing the pipe with eliptical objects where I'm cutting across the pipe and setting up more for the lengthwise/sideview of the pipe. Is there a way to have two different styles for the same pipe, one for a cross cut and one for a lengthwise slice?
is there a way to extract a 3D poly line where two surfaces intersect each other.
i have ground surface and i have dam surface. they would like to show the filler material in the cross section graph.. so i copied then raised the surface the required depth.
so now the surface and side slope of the dam intersect. and i would like to trim the filler material surface to be in line with the dam.
I want to extrude a big number of pillars to a rather complicated surface and that works out fine. But each end of the pillars warps around the surface and I want them just to go up to it and stop with a resulting horizontal face.
I have a curb return that was drawn as a fillet and I added two points at the PC and PT. Is there a way to create a feature line out of this with the two points associated so that it will interperlate between those 2 points?
I'm having trouble designing an alignment from an pre existing road. I drew the polyline and I need it to get curved between tangents (since there isn't a label that informs the angles between these tangents). But when I do it, not all the tangents get curved, just a part of it. The weird thing is that the whole polyline gets converted to an alignment and labeled correctly, but only the tangents near the initial stations get curved.
Other issue is that even if I draw another alignment in the same X, Y, i can't project it to my existing profile view. I can't offset my EG so i can weed it and design my alignment for my pressure pipe.
I'm more experienced working with pound and slopes in architecture design and this part of C3D seems more complicated
I am working on laying out data for some survey crews along the centerline of the road. I have a BC and EC elevation, but the vertices along the CL are at different elevations, which were the original elevation of the poly line before being transformed into a 3D polyline. Is there an easy way to make the full line follow the slope from BC to EC other than manually shifting the vertices?
I have a series of curved feature lines in Civil 3D where the elevation varies along the length of the curve. When I export the file in AutoCAD the feature line elevations are 0. In my previous version of 2010 civil 3D this did not happen but now I am running 2012 version and I can't find a way around it.
Why does 2012 Civil 3D not export feature lines the way it did in previous versions and retain the elevations?
I created a pipe rule and applied it to my 6" HDPE pipe in my parts list. The rule is followed close but not exact. Here it is:
I created a "cover only" rule for my 6" HDPE pipe. I have the maximum and minimum cover set to 3.50'. I have it the same so it will draw my pipe 3.50' deep. I don't want it to vary. It for drawing in existing underground power so when we cut profiles and sections the existing power shows up. We want it to show up 3.50' deep. I created a label style for my pipe that tells me start cover and end cover of the pipe so I can see it right there on the screen. The numbers range from 3.50' deep to 4.70' deep.
Why does the pipe not get drawn in exactly 3.50' deep?
When I create a new pressure network in 2014 - I have only Tees & Elbows available - Where are crosses? I need a 4-way cross at an intersection, C3D seems to include just the other two types I listed.
I have this block called gate valve. The base point is at the middle of the block. When I use this block as a style and insert it in profile it always places itself down low on the pipe. As you can see the grip is way above the top of the block and I have to move it into place anytime I use one. If I change the pipe inverts the gate valve block style lowers itself once again and I have to move it up into place. I have changed the base of the block but it makes no difference.
This is how the structure look in the object viewer. Notice the one on the right is the block that needs to be raised, however in the viewer it shows placed correctly.
