AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Construct A Curved Tube / Pipe Run

Oct 25, 2012

how to construct a curved tube/pipe run?

I've created a 3d sketch with the run of the tube on it but when I click "Derived Route" although the full 3d sketch is highlighted bugger all happens. There's nothing in the "Included Geometry" folder.

Is it because of the material? I've set it to a "Tube With Bends" and set my default radius.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Intersect With And Curved Pipe

Nov 18, 2011

I'm using the Intersect With method with two pipes. The Intersect With method doesn't appear to work with curved pipes if the pipes do not cross. If they don't cross the method works, but if they don't then it doesn't find the intersect points properly. This appears to be an issue with Civil 3D 2010 to 2012 API.

[URL]........

In the screen cast image the pipe on the right finds the intersection point with the straight pipe on the left, but not the curved pipe that is in the middle. I've had poor results trying to put in support requests for API related issues.

For Civil 3D 2010 here's the code that isn't working:

oPoints = new Point3dCollection();
Pipe oLateral = (Pipe)lateralObjId.GetObject(OpenMode.ForRead);
Pipe oMain = (Pipe)mainObjId.GetObject(OpenMode.ForRead);

oLateral.IntersectWith(oMain, Intersect.ExtendThis, oPoints, 0, 0);

AutoCAD Inventor :: Notch Beams Perpendicular To Each Other

Oct 25, 2011

I have a situation where need to frame a W14x30 into a W14x61.  When I perform the Notch command, the W14x30 is only partially notched. The W14x61 is taller by .05 in. I tried to notch the W14x30 by ending it at the flange edge of the W14x61.  I also tried to notch by ending the W14x30 on the other side of the W14x61, both attempts yielding no results.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Add Notch And Gap Of 1 Mm To Connecting Beam?

Oct 3, 2012

As i discovered, frame generator is a very handy tool to make a frame, and to connect beams to each other.

For a customer we need to build a large frame, The outer beams are connected directly to each other. The beams inside the outer frame need to have a gap because of mounting and welding.

What i am looking for is a kind of tool, where i can add a notch, and after the notch, shorten the beam with 1 mm at each side to make a gap, which is needed for welding.

Inventor gives an error if i add first a notch followed by a Lengthen/Shorten command. How to add a notch and a gap of 1 mm to a connecting beam?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Frame - Notch With Offset

Oct 5, 2012

Using IV 2013  and Frames.

When i get some frames and need to use the feature NOTCH, is there a way to put one offset on it ? like we can do using MITER ?

The solution we've found here is in every member that we use NOTCH, we enter in the frame part and then use the feature THICKEN/OFFSET, this wey i can get the standard offset of 3mm that we use here for welding.

Or, if there is other easy way instead of NOTCH, to make one frame get to other with offset.

The image below shows what i mean, i need to get this off set in the frames on Z AXIS.

Is there likely something wrong with my linetype definitions or is that normal behavior with civil 3d pipes?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Circular Pattern With User Parameter Controlling Angle Of Notch

Oct 13, 2013

I am setting up a family of parts that consist of a round disc with a fixed OD and a circular pattern of notches cut into the OD. The notches must go to a certain depth from the center, so those parameters are set. My problem is that I need to control the amount of material left between the notches, along the OD, after the pattern is done. Given the fixed parameters of the major OD, minor OD (3.5" in this case) and number of notches, the only way to control the amount of material between notches is to change the angle. When I set up the sketch to do the notches, I can only get a fully constrained sketch if I assign a specific angle  to the notch. I need to be able to set it up so that the angle of the notch varies so the end result is a specifc amount of material left after the circular patter is completed.

In the attached PDF, I show what I have done so far. In this case the OD of the part is 4" and the diameter of the notch at it's closest to the center is 3.5". So basically, I end up with a driven parameter of 0.443. If I assign this value the parameter of d14, I need to make it equal to a ratio of another parameter (let's call it d15) so that d14 = d15*2.. This can only be accomplished by changing the angle.

In my family, the major OD and minor OD remain the same, but the angle must change to retain a specific amount of material between the notches  when the number of notches is increased or decreased.

Is there an iLogic rule I can write to control this?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Curved Label For Curved Feature Line?

Mar 8, 2013

How to create a flow arrow label for a feature line that parallels the curve?

I've a vague notion that this could be done with a dynamic block and a few fancy expressions.  I'm comfortable with expressions, but I've never used dynamic blocks at all, so I wouldn't know where to start.

To be clear, I know curved text is possible, but I'm looking for a curved line (ie an arc) that would look 'parallel' to the arc of the feature line (ie have the same centre point).  This would have to be dynamic to allow for different radii and for flipping to the left and right side of the feature line.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Holes In Curved Surface

Sep 30, 2013

Basically I’m trying to create a circular cut in a flat pattern for a hole made in a rolled piece of sheet metal.

I have created a "case" (this is what we call it) to mount an axial fan, it will require holes for mounting the motor plate. When I create these holes in the rolled case assembly they appear to be fine, but when I flatten it they are turned into two sets of semi-circles or ellipses.

This is only a problem when we run the parts on our Laser; the laser will attempt to start the cutting at the end of each of these "semi-circles" causing a hotspot where the two semi circles meet. This causes the hole to be slightly smaller than intended in this area causing great difficulty inserting bolts, they normally require drilling.

 Our material thicknesses vary from about 3mm to 8mm.

I’ve included a crude example of what I’m trying to achieve. To really see what I mean, place the file into a Drawing file and zoom into the hole. I couldn't add the file, with only 3 features the file was 5mb in size.

By the way, I have a temporary solution, it's just a little complicated. (My solution: use square holes first in the un-flat, use the diagonal lines from each corner of the square in a sketch on the flat pattern to place a circular cut on its mid points.)

AutoCAD Inventor :: Chamfer To A Curved Edge

Mar 4, 2013

In Autodesk Inventor 2013. I have a simple cylinder extrusion with a rectangle attached to the cylinder. Drawing file attached(extrusion 1). Whenever I apply a chamfer to one of the straight edges, Inventor generates negative taper on the cylinder wall (if you zoom in with a window, you can clearly see that their are two lines on the cylinder wall where the chamfer edges was applied).

Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? This gives me all sorts of problem in my CAM software because the tool is trying to machine in an area it cannot get to.

As a work around I have to create a new part file with a small gap between the cylinder and the chamfered edges. This keeps the cylinder edges nice and straight with no taper. The work around is attached as well. Since the tool can't go that far into the corner given the radius of the tool, the gap has no affect on me generating code. I have tried many different ways on creating this part with chamfers with no luck. Once the chamfer is generated, it should match the profile of the cylinder.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Extrude Around A Curved Surface

Apr 27, 2012

I have a cylinder that has for lack of a better word, a zig zaged slot milled into the outside of it thru to the bore. I am unsure how to go about drawing this so I can get it to extrude correctly around the part.

From other cad software history, I could draw it on a straight plane and tell it wrap around the part of whatever diameter. But, since I have not attempted this in Inventor I don't know if this exists.

Just for reference, this is a twist lock device. Turn the cylinder, advance a key the is inside the zig zag advancing or retracting the part that is inside the bore attached to said key.
